Pomp before policy as President Hu arrives

ANDREWS AIR FORCE BASE, MD (CNN)-  The white 747 with blue stripes and adorned with a flag landed at Andrews Air Force Base Tuesday afternoon, bringing a president to Washington. But this time it was an Air China jet  stopping in Air Force One's usual parking spot, to begin an official state visit by President Hu.

The real story of the Hu visit will be the serious topics up for discussion away from carefully choreographed ceremonies: trade, currency, and security. Each is an issue without easy answers. But even with one of America's most complicated relationships, policy talks start with protocol. FULL POST

Obama to Wisconsin after State of the Union

Washington (CNN) - Continuing a presidential tradition of traveling to the heartland of America after delivering his State of the Union address, President Obama will fly to Manitowoc, Wis., on Wednesday, January 26. Presidents have historically visited politically important states following the annual speech in order to highlight themes and programs outlined in the address.

Manitowoc is located on Lake Michigan, about a 90-minute drive north of Milwaukee. The mayor, Justin Nickels, is a mere 24 years old. He was 22 when elected to the post.

Candidate Obama carried the state of Wisconsin in 2008 by 14 points over Republican candidate Senator John McCain. But the Republicans made a strong comeback in the state during the last midterm elections in November 2010 winning a Senate seat, two House seats and the governorship.

The president traveled to Tampa the day after last year's State of the Union address for a town hall meeting.

Chinese president to begin U.S. visit

By the CNN Wire Staff

(CNN) - Chinese President Hu Jintao arrives in Washington on Tuesday, a day before a high-profile meeting with President Obama to discuss trade, currency and a host of other issues, including North Korea.

Chinese state media has reported that Hu will stress how a constructive, comprehensive partnership between the powers could be mutually beneficial and help ensure stability in Asia and worldwide despite differences between Beijing and Washington.

In addition to Obama, Hu is also scheduled to meet with top legislators and business executives. After Washington, Hu will make a stop in Chicago.

Wednesday's meeting between the leaders of the world's two largest economies has put the spotlight on criticism that the government-controlled People's Bank of China artificially undervalues the yuan, bringing down the cost of Chinese exports, which would give it an advantage in the international market.

An Icy White House

WASHINGTON (CNN) - An overnight mix of freezing rain and snow left Washington-area residents with a thick layer of ice on their cars and many roads, making for a messy commute for those of us who had to go to work this morning.  The scene was no different at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, only its residents don't have to shovel or throw down any salt.  This job is left to National Park Service employees who are responsible for taking care of the White House grounds.

Some area schools and businesses are closed or delayed because of the weather.  This includes Malia and Sasha Obama's Sidwell Friends School, which is on a two-hour delay.

CNN Photojournalist Brian Yaklyvich captured the scene at the White House this morning.
