Obama signs 2011 budget deal into law

WASHINGTON (CNN)President Barack Obama signed the budget agreement covering federal spending for the remainder of the current fiscal year on Friday, an administration official said, bringing an end to any remaining fears of a government shutdown.

The bipartisan deal, which won approval Thursday from both the House and Senate, cuts $38.5 billion in spending while funding the government through September 30.

With its passage, White House and congressional leaders now turn their attention to what are expected to be more rancorous battles over the budget for the next fiscal year and the upcoming need to raise the federal debt limit.

The deal covering the current year was announced by key leaders shortly before midnight last Friday, a mere hour before what would have been the start of a partial shutdown. Spokesmen on both sides of the aisle portrayed it as a step toward controlling America's skyrocketing debt.

White House unveils 'receipt' for taxes you pay

By CNNMoney's Jennifer Liberto
WASHINGTON (CNN)- On the eve of tax day, the White House unveiled a new online tool that estimates how much of an individual's taxes pay for things such as war, NASA and the interest on the deficit.

However, the online calculator obscures how much of an individual's tax dollars goes to a controversial expense that Republicans have been railing about - bailing out government-owned mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac - by lumping it with other expense such as commerce, transportation and government administration.

President Obama said in his State of the Union address that he wanted to give taxpayers an itemized receipt for how tax dollars are spent.

And the unveiling of the new online calculator couldn't be timelier, coming on the weekend when many are crunching their own tax bills.

WASHINGTON (CNN) It shouldn't be any surprise that two of the three states President Barack Obama visits next week are battleground states.

According to a White House release Friday, the president will travel to northern Virginia Tuesday to hold a town hall. Obama won the state in 2008, the first Democrat to carry Virginia in a presidential election since 1964. With an open Senate seat to defend as well, Virginia is a crucial state for Democrats in 2012.

The president also holds a town hall in Reno, Nevada on Thursday. Obama carried that state as well in 2008, the first Democrat to capture Nevada since Bill Clinton won it in 1996. Like Virginia, there's a crucial contest for the Senate as well, but in this case it's an open seat that is currently held by the GOP.

In between the two events, the president also holds a town hall Wednesday at Facebook Headquarters in Palo Alto, California. California is safe and lucrative politically for Obama. He will also be the main attraction at fund raisers in San Francisco and Los Angeles for his re-election campaign and the Democratic National Committee.
