Emerging from a meeting with President Obama Friday, House Democratic leaders are making clear they are prepared to give little ground when it comes to the ongoing negotiations surrounding the debate over raising the nation’s debt ceiling.

House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer:

“I think all of us agree, every Republican leader and every Democratic leader, agrees that defaulting on our debt is not an American value. Americans believe in paying their bills. Americans believe that we make a promise and we borrow money, we make a promise we're going to pay it back, we're going to pay it back. Holding hostage, the credit-worthiness of the United States of America is not a worthy bargaining chip."

Dem Caucus Vice Chairman Xavier Becerra:

“I think all of us agree, every Republican leader and every Democratic leader, agrees that defaulting on our debt is not an American value. Americans believe in paying their bills. Americans believe that we make a promise and we borrow money, we make a promise we're going to pay it back, we're going to pay it back. Holding hostage, the credit-worthiness of the United States of America is not a worthy bargaining chip.”

First lady unveils new food guidelines

In an effort to fight America’s obesity epidemic, first lady Michelle Obama Thursday unveiled a new way for Americans to look at food and food portions.  It's called MyPlate.

"We needed something useful, something simple," Mrs. Obama noted. "And that's why I like the MyPlate approach so much because when it comes to eating, what's more useful than a plate? "

Joining her in the announcement were Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and Surgeon General Regina Benjamin.

Bauer transitions to Obama campaign

President Obama's top lawyer is leaving the White House to return to private practice and assume the same role he held in 2008: chief counsel to Obama's reelection campaign.

Bob Bauer will return to the white-shoe law firm Perkins Coie where he will focus on providing counsel to the reelection campaign and the Democratic National Committee.

Bauer's No. 2 at the White House, Kathryn Ruemmler, will take over the top post.

Obama camp wants $60 million by end of June

(CNN) - He won’t face a Republican opponent for months, but President Obama is aiming to kick the campaign season off with a fundraising bang, asking his top donors to bring in $60 million by the end of June.

The request came in a presentation to heavyweight fundraisers Wednesday in Chicago, according to a source who has seen the presentation. The $60 million cash haul would go both to Obama’s reelection campaign and the Democratic National Committee, and is in line with reports that the Obama campaign is ultimately hoping to raise $1 billion during the upcoming campaign cycle.

Bad news in unemployment front could dog White House

Bad news for the U.S. labor market and the White House this morning. CNNMoney's Annalyn Censky reports that the number of Americans filing for their first week of unemployment benefits stayed above 400,000 for the eighth week in a row last week, a sign of continuing weakness in the labor market:

In the week ended May 28, 422,000 Americans filed for their first week of unemployment benefits, the Labor Department said Thursday.

While that marked a 6,000 decrease from the revised 428,000 initial claims filed the week before, it was worse than economists' expectations for 413,000 claims.

It's a topic that's sure to dominate today's White House press briefing.
