The president's tweets

WASHINGTON (CNN) - President Obama may no longer be face-to-face negotiating the ongoing debt ceiling talks but the Obama team is using Twitter and the president's handle as its latest tool to influence the Hill.

President Obama, using his signature "-BO" to show he actually tweeted himself, launched a flurry of tweets by saying:

"The time for putting party first is over. If you want to see a bipartisan #compromise, let Congress know. Call. Email. Tweet. —BO"

The Obama team followed up with more than seventy tweets (and counting) listing the Twitter handles of Republican members of Congress encouraging followers to "urge them to support a bipartisan compromise to the debt crisis." @BarackObama, with more than 9 million Twitter followers and managed by the President's re-election office, has shown to be a powerful messaging resource.

During his prime time address on Monday night, President Obama asked Americans to make their voices heard by their representatives in Congress encouraging compromise. Americans responded – old school – calling their elected representatives in Washington.  By the next day, phone lines and servers on Capitol Hill has reached capacity.  After the president's similar plea on Friday, House telephone circuits were again on overload.

The President's billion dollar election campaign just can not keep it's hands out of the cooking pot. Stir it up, mix it up, divide the country. "Give me $2 trillion or I will not feed grandma." Where is the unity, where is the compromise?

The President spent his day sending more than 70 slices of spam. Believe me folks, if this debt is not curbed, that is all we will have, spam.

Here is one tweet the president should have sent, it is from his Sen. Floor Speech, March 20, 2006, "Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. BO". It would fit nicely into his 140 character thought.

Unlike me, Jay has probably never eaten Spam, which was a WWII staple due to the ration of meat, and the need for ice to refrigerate fresh meat during the summer.

The president did not say he would not feed grandma if he did not have the debt ceiling raised, he said he didn't know if there would be enough money available to send everyone due a check their payment...that includes recipients of SS/disability, veterans, active military personnel, government retirees, government employees, the vast number of contractors who supply items to the government, monies states receive from the federal government, student loan payments, interest on government loans, and many others .

This is money which has already been spend, the money being mailed this month is interest or payment owed for the previous month. SS is always money paid after the fact...interest is interest accrued on the previous month's outstanding debt.

Social Security benefits are paid each month, but for the previous month. For example: the check received in August is for the month of July.....that is why it is money congress has already spent.

It is spend then tax...not tax and spend. It is congress who agreed to pay that money and who now doesn't want to cut the check.

Where were you when George W. Bush spent the money for two unfunded wars, an unfunded drug plan that didn't cut the cost for drugs, and TARP?

It is the morons in the teapotty who don't want to feed grandma or anyone

Said it before, but it is worth saying again. You shot your credibility with the SS debate. Claiming that it is money that you loaned the government and that they agreed to pay it back plus interest. Your SS is not guaranteed, the Supreme Court ruled way back in 1960 that you do not have a claim to its value. Again, it is a tax, plain and simple. Hope and dream all you want but it is not guaranteed.

Jean – you need to put Marx's class war away – even though Obama and the neo-Communists tell you its the way to go – and THINK. There is no excuse these days not to do your research - all the info in right here on the internet. Whatever your politics – its a FACT that Obama is the first president in our history who would use this kind of weapon on his own country. Can you imagine ANY PRES in our history who would not get in front of the cameras and tell the world that – no matter what – the US will service its debt – really? The debt crisis has been manufactured by Obama so he can concentrate on reelection. The Aug 2 date means NOTHING. The US brings in almost $200B a MONTH – plenty to handle the debt service ($25B), SS, Medicare, etc. Yes, he'd have to look at prioritizing that $ – let me ask you – as a patriot – would YOU not tell the world that we'd pay the debt service?? Obama isn't. There is no other reasonable conclusion than horrifically vicious partisan politics – by your guy. This is his pattern. Our Country deserves more from you and the others like you. THINK. Our Country is being destroyed. If you love the U.S., you'd better start protecting her.

I think if the house of reprsentatives were denied their check because of the budget they would be quick to pass the bill. Maybe they should forfeit their pay for the next year, see how that sits with them. It seems that the they are not putting the well being of the american people before their own political agendas.

So now Liberals want to insult those in the South? What about all the Northerners that moved down here when the jobs ran out? And Liz Carter of Georgia, Bill Clinton, Martian Luther King Jr., and about 120 million other people. Man, you Liberals cast a large net of hate and contempt. Come next year your president will be begging Southerners to vote for him. Thank goodness you have planted seeds of hope. We will remember.

The fact remains, on March 20, 2006, your president said about the debt increase, said there was a failure of leadership. Maybe you should take the time to read his speech.

From Sen. Floor Speech, March 20, 2006:

The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. … Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that “the buck stops here.” Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.

@Jay...as always with your half a quote portion..with only the half portion that fits your agenda.

Now, let us see the full quote, and emphasize the part about what debt costs us, and why the George W. Bush debt and interest on that debt did us so much harm. Bush doubled the national debt and raised the debt ceiling 7 times...the interest alone on HIS debt for 2 unfunded wars, unfunded drug plan, and TARP is staggering. Yet we must bear that burden to keep us from default....and those who profited the most from his massive debt plus interest do not want to pay for their share of that expense. That is why i refer to them as Gollum and Welshers.

Obama says. "raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure."

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies.

Over the past 5 years, our federal debt has increased by $3.5 trillion to $8.6 trillion. That is “trillion” with a “T.” That is money that we have borrowed from the Social Security trust fund, borrowed from China and Japan, borrowed from American taxpayers. And over the next 5 years, between now and 2011, the President’s budget will increase the debt by almost another $3.5 trillion.

Numbers that large are sometimes hard to understand. Some people may wonder why they matter. Here is why: This year, the Federal Government will spend $220 billion on interest. That is more money to pay interest on our national debt than we’ll spend on Medicaid and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program. That is more money to pay interest on our debt this year than we will spend on education, homeland security, transportation, and veterans benefits combined. It is more money in one year than we are likely to spend to rebuild the devastated gulf coast in a way that honors the best of America.

And the cost of our debt is one of the fastest growing expenses in the Federal budget. This rising debt is a hidden domestic enemy, robbing our cities and States of critical investments in infrastructure like bridges, ports, and levees; robbing our families and our children of critical investments in education and health care reform; robbing our seniors of the retirement and health security they have counted on.

Every dollar we pay in interest is a dollar that is not going to investment in America’s priorities."

Facts: National debt on Jan 20, 2001, the day President Bush took office. $ 5,727,776,738,304. You try and make it sound like the debt was $3.5 trillion. Again, blaming President Bush before he ever run for office.

Your president enjoyed 2 years of a Democrat controlled House and Senate. Did he fund his wars? Did he cut spending? No he spent many times the money, started 2 more wars, Libya and Syria, has spent more money in 2 years than President Bush did in 8.

Right now, today, not 8 years ago, but today, your president has 4 unfunded wars, massive stimulus programs. All of your arguments about President Bush could be applied to this president.
