Biden: 14th amendment and terrorists

Here is more information from Democrats familiar with today’s closed-door House meeting, with Vice President Biden.

The Vice President said the 14th amendment was NOT an option for the President.  Context: Rep. DeFazio (D-OR) wanted to know why the President didn’t just use the 14th amendment. The VP explained the President had his legal scholars look into it and decided it was not appropriate. We’ve previously been advised that VP Biden consulted with the White House counsel’s office about options – including whether the 14th amendment could be invoked. He chaired the Judiciary Committee when he was in the Senate so is probably familiar with the issues.

On reports that the VP called tea party lawmakers “terrorists”: Multiple Democratic sources say the VP was listening to angry Democrats vent about Republicans who said they “negotiate like terrorists”  “how can you negotiate with hostage takers” and that they “feel pick pocketed”. As they vented the VP said “well now we’ve taken away their weapons of mass destruction,” meaning the Republicans can’t use the debt ceiling as leverage with Democrats in the future. In an interview with CBS' Scott Pelley the Vice President denied he compared tea party linked lawmakers to terrorists.

Kendra Barkoff, the Vice President's Press Secretary, responded to the accusations: “The word was used by several members of Congress. The Vice President does not believe it’s an appropriate term in political discourse.”

if you check the sources who started the rumor, I bet you'll find it was Glenn Beck and Sean Hanity.

If you check the source for this comment, I'll bet you'll find willful stupidity and ignorance.

Really. You realize you can look yourself, don't you? Or is being responsible for yourself a foreign concept to you?

Beck and Hannity will be very upset that you just called them Democrats. I am sure they feel that is the worst name they could be called.

You do realize this freakin governmnet will be spending 8% more next year than this year? When do you think we should try to get spending under control?
Say what you will, but Tea Party candidates are now in all levels of governmnet, conservatives and liberals, in local, state and federal branchs of government. Get use to it people, more and more of these Tea Party people will be voted into office. It is what true Americans want. Politicians who can care less about being elected in the next election.
BO just sold you libs out because he was worried about the next election. His only real demand was that this debt ceiling issue not come up before the next election. He got exactly what he wanted.
      Hope for Change in 2012.

It's quite possible that Obama wanted the debt ceiling to last through the election cycle in order to give the voters a chance to express their views as our Constitution specifies. Polls indicate that support for TP principles are slipping. The only way to truly determine whether or not those polls are accurate is via the ballot box.

Right. Keep thinking that. Dems keep talking about raising taxes and keep trying to fool themselves into thinking the community organizer knows what he is doing. Tea Party numbers are growing every day while BO's numbers are falling like a rock.
More bad reports today on personal spending, in June it was "weaker" than expected. Maybe the Dems should promote another massave stimulas package? LOL.

How did we ever end up with this moronic idiot as vice president of our once great country? Oh yeah, I forgot. We need to thank the Democrats and President NObama for that. With these two, their credo is: We don't want or need your opinions. It's my way or the highway! Americans, your thoughts/beliefs don't count!"

Wow, a great example of Orwellian double-speak. Do the facts mean nothing to you? Surely you can't believe the tea-partiers were seriously listening to the american public or willing to find middle ground in this debate? Opinions are one thing, gross distortion of the facts has become standard for the tea partiers/Fox dupes.

Typical Republican lackey: Projecting your own bad behavior onto others. When are you bullies going to grow a pair and start helping this country instead of trying to bring it to its knees?

Historically, our country has faired better under Democratic control than Republican. And you all know that – which is why you resort to extortion tactics to get your way.

What a pathetic bunch of losers! I can hardly wait until 2012 when we can throw all of your kiesters out with the trash!

Say it again, Say it again, loud and clear. I love it!! These teabaggers and their attempts to dumb down America....just to hear their nonsensical arguments about a made-up crisis makes me wonder what was NOT being covered in the media during this period that we all need to revisit. I firmly believe our media is complicit in elevating this absolutely ASININE and distorted conversation about the deficit spending to create, feed and exacerbate controversy in an effort to bring this President down. What a shameful media we have in this country. The only good thing about this controversy is that more Americans are paying attention to this so-called democracy of ours with a bought and paid for media who operates like prostitutes and whores to whomever is willing to pay the highest price for manufactured content! !

Senator Biden has been serving this country with distinction for decades, but our moronic obsessions with glamor and glibness keep us from seeing the leadership under our noses. I can name Republicans who are equally eminent, but they never get the chance to shine because Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann and John Huntsman and Mitt Romney all have better hairdos. President Obama, intelligent fellow that he is, recognized this gem of an advisor and second. Please, everyone, think for yourselves. The cable networks PAY their newsreaders to say what they say, and they say what they say because the corporate execs have decided on what message they think will best sell. Haven't you noticed how easily the "anchors" move from one network to the next? It's about money. Make up your own minds based on your own needs and who best serves them. Think, please. Are those low taxed CEOs reallly going to create new jobs for you, or are they going to laugh as they cut more jobs and pocket the proceeds? Does what Suze Orman or Ali Velshi say about the economy really have relevance to you? Are Glen Beck and Rush Limbaugh newsmen, or entertainers? Think, and vote in your own best interests.

Tea Party people are called "terrorists", "taliban", the "dark side" and various other names I refuse to mention. Those people calling names are the people you side with and your numbers a dwindling. 70% of Americans wanted Cut, Cap and Balance. The Tea Party people are making a change for the positive. Be it a very small change, given the fact that the 8% more money will be spent next year than this year. But it is a change.
The dems voted 95 to 95 yesterday. How do you libs feel about those 95 dem "terrorists", "taliban" and dark side people who voted against the bill and how do you feel about these folks doing exactly what the leader said to do – how else do you explain 95 to 95?
Also, people who are talking down FOX news, who exactly on that network don't you respect and why? If you don't like FOX turn it off and go watch Al Sharpton on MSDNC – another nut you are on the side of.

I love you guys. Fiscal responsibility!? Who do these people think they are!?!?! WE need to spend ourselves into Oblivion before we start making cuts!

Honestly, I don't get it. You idiots complain, "THE TEATARDS WANT US TO BEDAULT AND DATS THE WORST THING FOR OUR COUNTRY".

        1. Defaulting is up to Mr. Obama. The U.S. brings way more than enough to pay the debtors. I know holding him responsible for something is a strange concept, but sometimes it is actually appropriate.
        2. You know the U.S. deserves to have a terrible credit rating, right? You think we'll ever pay off 14 trillion dollars? HA! Very funny, bro. Not with as many ignorant ideologues as there are on this website. Nope. Politicians rely on people like you to get reelected. What happens 20 years from now doesn't matter, as long as your congressmen "bring home the bacon", you guys are happy. Our credit rating will just get worse and worse until we're in a permanent depression.

Wow, thanks for clearing that up fast Jesica, now we know that many Democrats were calling Republicans "Terrorists", "Hostage takers" and "Pick Pockets" But all Biden said was, AND I QUOTE FROM YOUR IDIOTIC STORY: As they vented the VP said “well now we’ve taken away their weapons of mass destruction,...”. So you people at CNN think thats ok? CNN thinks its ok for the Dems to say those things?

CNN is nothing but a shill for the Democrat Party. They have shamelessly whored their integrity by costently taking sides politically with Democrats. All you people who take offense at Fox News must remember that the only reason you feel the way you do is that the straight news portion of Fox presents both sides by allowing a fair hearing of Republican voices. Thats something you don't get here or from the other so called main streem media on cable or the network news or the major papers. How can people make informed decisions if they only watch CNN etc.? They can't, but as we saw in the 2010 elections, people are making up their own minds by using fairer sources of media.

Nov. 2012 can't come fast ehough.

    • Sniffit

Yeah...shills for the Dems that are refusing to report on yet another GOPer calling Obama a "tar baby" today. Yep...ever so biased in favor of liberals.

      August 1, 2011 at 8:16 pm |
      • ThinkAgain

Republican congressman Doug Lamborn of Colorado called President Obama a "tar baby" today on a radio talk show. It'll be interesting to see how he tries to "not meant to be factually accurate" his way out of this one.

What a bunch of losers those GOPers! Acting like a bunch of Klansman hiding behind their sheets. Why don't they just grow a pair and put it out there that they are either racist or at the least, don't mind using racism to further their agenda?

But then again, when all of your policies are PROVEN FAILURES, what else do you have except anger, fear, hatred and division?

        GOP = POS

        August 1, 2011 at 8:36 pm |
      • Jay in NC

ABC reported what the congressman said.
“Even if some people say, ‘Well the Republicans should have done this or they should have done that,’ they will hold the president responsible. Now, I don’t even want to have to be associated with him. It’s like touching a tar baby and you get it, you’re stuck, and you’re a part of the problem now and you can’t get away,”

So, he did not call the president a tar baby, he said working with him is like touching a tar baby. It is an analogy, perhaps he could have picked a less racially charged subject. What is the difference in a society that is equal, that blacks and whites are treated the same? In other words how can you consider this to be racist given that all things are equal. Should this president be treated with kid gloves, coddled, protected from the harsh world?

        Consider this, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tar_baby

The Tar-Baby is a doll made of tar and turpentine used to entrap Br'er Rabbit in the second of the Uncle Remus stories. The more that Br'er Rabbit fights the Tar-Baby, the more entangled he becomes. In modern usage, "tar baby" refers to any "sticky situation" that is only aggravated by additional contact. The tar baby is a trap that should be avoided.

        August 1, 2011 at 8:53 pm |
      • Sniffit

Thank you for helping confirm for me that NC is one of the most insidiously apologist racist states in the nation. I'm well aware of where the reference comes from and we're all well aware of the racist connotations that have been given and still exist for the term "tar baby." The analogy directly compared Obama to a "tar baby." That's as close as it needs to be to actually calling him one for the racist reality of his statement to stick. We spent 3-4 months listening to GOPers bemoan and wail about the "sexism" of using the "pig with lipstick" idiom in reference to Jaberwocky Barbie, so your apologist stance for Lamborn is complete and utter hypocritcal bunk.

        August 1, 2011 at 9:01 pm |
      • Jay in NC

So Tar Baby is racist because it is black? You know, tar is black and it is sticky. Would it make you feel better if it was white sap? Over sensitive, plain and simple.

Here is a question, why are the northern cities like, Detroit, Chicago, NY so segregated? In the south they have learned to live with, marry, and help one another.

Another thing, I have never said my race, sex, age, or even where in the world I am located. Simply because you disagree you choose to call me the names. It is not based on any real information, just your knee jerk prejudiced though of a person with a traditional male name in a southern state.

        August 1, 2011 at 9:11 pm |
      • ThinkAgain

Jay NC: "Tar baby" has very negative connotations in the Black community – and white folks in the South know it. You can reference literature until the cows come home; "tar baby" was used for a very specific purpose.

        August 1, 2011 at 11:18 pm |

jay in nc: are you delusional? whites and blacks are equal? maybe under the law – but certainly not in practice.

Yet another Republican shill who projects Fox's propaganda behavior onto anyone who disagrees with your talking points of the day. You are a shameless bunch, who'd make Goebbels proud.

      That's right, I made a Nazi reference – because I think you're all a bunch of fascists!

      August 1, 2011 at 8:32 pm |
    • Jay in NC

Yes, last night Ali Velshi said this was all invented by the Tea Party. That the US could stand to borrow more money. Only an over paid reporter at CNN could think like that. We are now each in debt to our government over $56,000. If Ali thinks more taxes is a good idea then why doesn't he pay more on his Fed tax this year? You know that will never happen. Liberals like Ali want other people to pay but never them selfs.

      August 1, 2011 at 8:58 pm |
      • ThinkAgain

Yeah, Liberals like Warren Buffet and Bill Gates don't want to pay more – NOT! They (among other wealthy Liberals) spoke out that they think they should be paying more. And today David Frum – no friend of the Liberal – said that it's unrealistic and short-sighted to not have the wealthy pay their fair share.

BTW, it's "themselves," not "them selfs"...

        August 1, 2011 at 11:21 pm |
      • Jay in NC

ThinkAgain, your post show just how out of touch Liberals are with the deficit. Consider this, according to Forbs.com the top 400 billionaires wealth equals just over $1 trillion dollars. Well $1,087,000,000,000. That is only 100 days of government spending. Or just 6 % of the total debt of (was 14.6 trillion) now $16.8 trillion.

So, go ahead take the wealth of the leaders of Microsoft, Walmart, Mars candy, Apple Computer. Spend it on another stimulus, do you really think you can do a better job at creating jobs than these people?

Paying more in taxes is not the answer. Spending is out of control.

I've got some swamp land to sell you too... it makes me sad that someone could be so incredibly stupid as to compare ANY cable news program, i.e., Fox vs. CNN - pls note, they are cut from the same cloth. The operative word here being "profit-making news organization". Either network does not function for the purpose of fact-drive news content. However, the difference w/Fox is they're programming is skewed to the right 100 percent and CNN tries to position a few moderate views with their guests. But both networks are right-wing leaning for the most part. Fox news is just dangerous and If you continue to immerse yourself w/ a one-sided viewpoint, as is evident from you comments, you will no longer be able to process information and arrive at yr own independent thought. The idea of media is to provide unbiased information with balanced perspectives for you to then make and arrive at your own conclusions. What fox and CNN does is just the opposite. They put forth SET PIECES in an effort to shape and form your viewpoint. Looks like they have succeeded with you.

      August 1, 2011 at 9:29 pm |
  11. Sniffit

Of course, no mention gets made of Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-CO) calling Obama a "tar baby" today...no no...CNN and the "news" media need to sweep that under the rug and focus on GOPers being miffed about an accurate analogy to descrieb their willingness to take the country's credit rating and the world economy to the brink of disaster in order to hold it hostage, delay recovery and keep everyone as suffering as possible in hopes it will help them in 2012.

Like terrorists the Tea Party radicals threatened death if their wishes weren't met – in this case, the death of the American economy. Like terrorists they were fully brainwashed by the hateful right-wing media. Like terrorists they were incapable of understanding the consequences of their actions. Like terrorists they hated Americans enough to cause severe harm to those least able to defend themselves. I see no problem calling the Tea Party a terror organization. I will work hard to ensure we never allow them to gain power again.

Just some news for all of you who blame the tea Party for everything. 8 months ago the president extended the BUSH TAX CUTS saying they were needed to help job creation, 7 months ago, the president submitted his budget which was subsequently voted down in the Dem senate 97-0 (The senate has not passed a budget in over 800 days), 3 months ago he wanted a clean debt ceiling rise no cuts in spending , 2 months ago he wanted some cuts but only with tax increases then he wanted "A BIG DEAL ONLY" as long as the "Rich" payed just a little bit more. Over the last month he gave up on tax increases, he gave up on the "Big Deal" and finally he diappeared for the last 4 days waiting for whatever the congress passed and jumped out to try to take credit for it. Meanwhile first quarter growth (thats Jan -March) was revised to only 0.4% and second quarter was down to 1.5%. Unemployment is up again, manufacturing is at its slowest pace in 16 years, home prices were up a bit because the foreclousures have been haulted for investigations leaving millions of homes off the market. You all need to stop blaming everything and everybody else and start to look for a new candidate, President Obama is a terrible leader and he can't win in 2012 with this kind of record.

Congress is obstructing him at every turn. Very irresponsible of them-it isn't just the US economy that's still in trouble. The global economy is struggling. It's going to be very hard to keep the world out of a second recession. Republicans don't seem to care about that. As far as they're concerned, we can all go to h**** in a hand-basket, as long as they bring him down.

The terrorist in the house aren't willing to negotiate for the good of the country.

Hillary? are you fricken kidding. Hillary is no better than obama, she has no respect for the men and women fighting in afganistan. she refused to meet with any of the junior enlisted, it was merely a publicity stunt to boost her ratings. She is a fricken hipocrit. ( I met her during a visit to Iraq in 2007). She is not interested in making this country any better. We all had our chance to bring this country back from the brink in 2008 with John McCain (palin not included), but instead the masses caved in to the "Change" propaganda from Obama. The problem with this country during elections is that the general public refuse to think for themselves, and buy into the crap that the media feeds us.

This is what happens when a reasonable person negotiates with a madman. While I respect Obama's adherence to Constitutional principles, his opponents are bent on destroying America's Constitutional democracy and replacing it with a theo-facist plutocracy. Obama's lack of a dorsal stiffening structure in these and previous negotiations has hastened America's destruction.

I now wish Hillary had been President, I don't like her but I feel she would have done a much better job protecting the county's future from these RepubliKlux extortionists than Obama has.

Krugman is right, America is on track to become a bananna republic, Obama just accelerated the process.

I've got to convince my daughter and son-in-law to move to Australia then bring me over, I don't want to die in a RepubliKlux detention facility.

    Vice President Biden
How dare you call them REPRESENTATIVES AND SENATORS OF THE PEOPLE who are trying to stop your insane overspending of our money, “TERRORIST”.
We have wars on terrorist currently and your statement is an initiation of an act of war against the American people as Vice President of the United States.
This is a demand that you resign immediately from your current post as you are too irresponsible for your position.

A mojority of Americans think it is time for you to go. speak out people these guys are crazy

Biden is not the first on the left lately to make this assertion. If the TEA Party are terrorists, then let's follow leftists premises.

After the 9/11 attacks by Muslim terrorists the left was insisting we ask: What did we do to make them so angry at us? We must understand their grievances and rage and be sensitive to that!

So where is leftist critical self-examination to understand what they did to make the TEA Party – fellow Americans – so angry at them? Can we expect soon to see leftist 'understanding and sensitivity' to the TEA Party's grievances?

No. That all applies only to foreign U.S.-hating terrorists – who will not be called 'terrorists' because the left does not want to offend them. 'Terrorists" are now fellow Americans who merely disagree with the left. They are a scourge to be wiped out.

Keep it up, leftists. You are showing more and more of what you really are – and it ain't pretty.

this is the government that won't call real terrorists terrorist but they have no problem calling Americans who don't agree with them terrorists, can't use the race card anymore because it has been overused and people are listening when they use it so now they came up with a new word for them. all I see is a bunch of babies in the democratic party and I am a democrat, I am ashamed of this government we have now I hope American wakes up and get this a**holes out and put people who care about America not their parties.

I think Biden, Boehner, and Obama just made appearances for political reasons that in effect throw the middle class under the bus. Obama just gave the GOP everything they need to dismantle social security and medicare and their walking around speaking on TV with the talking heads like they accomplished something. They did, they just gave the GOP the 2012 election,....fools.

It is interesting that only a few months ago the political world was in upheaval because of Sarah Palin's (I don't like her but it brings up a good point) of bulls-eye on democratic incumbents that were vulnerable to tea-party affiliates. The democrats and liberals screamed bloody-murder when they focused on her using the bulls-eye around the time of Rep Gifford's shooting (extremely happy she was in attendance at the House yesterday) calling for an apology of the fact that it was a symbol used – although the dems used it only a few years prior without any issue. It is very interesting to see that now a dem calls a group of americans terrorists and this is okay. No one in the liberal media is saying, WTH?!?!, he / they can't do that, don't they understand that this is wrong and incites violence?!?!?!

Always interesting to see how dems thing that they are okay to be hypocrites over and over again as long as they are doling out hoards of money on the backs of everyone, only to secure another term in office of 192k / year salaries. Come to think of it, isn't it a coincidence they want to raise the taxes on anyone over $200k / year??? Conveniently leaving them out of the increase...just a coincidence...maybe.

The only difference between the Tea Party, and that neoNazi terrorist in Norway, is that the T.Party also scapegoats Mexicans, not just Muslims and Liberals.
