White House diverts Marine One – and raises questions

President Barack Obama left for Camp David on Marine One Friday but, in a twist that has left some White House reporters scratching their heads, he apparently arrived at the presidential retreat by car.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney explained the decision not to land at Camp David was made in advance because of the weather. Marine One landed at an alternate site near Frederick, Maryland and the president and his daughter, Sasha, rode in a motorcade the rest of way to the compound.

Because it is customary practice that the traveling press pool is included whenever the president uses a motorcade, reporters naturally wondered why the pool was not part of the trip or even informed that the president would use a motorcade ahead of time.

Meanwhile, CNN's weather team found no signs of stormy weather in the area at the time Marine One departed the White House.

The White House said there were no mechanical issues with the presidential helicopter.

"It was a bit of a surprise because he (Obama) usually does not land here. They usually go all the way to Camp David," said Kristy Rossignuolo, a customer service representative at the Frederick Municipal Airport.

Also Friday, a fighter under the direction of North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) intercepted an aircraft in the vicinity of Camp David. The civilian aircraft left the restricted area and landed at the Martinsburg Airport in West Virginia, NORAD said.

No other details were immediately available on the incident, which was separate from the decision to divert Marine One.

CNN's Jessica Yellin and John Branch contributed to this report

The US Secret Service manages risks at levels most of us can never understand. They rarely get the credit they deserve but always get critical comments in the rare event that something goes wrong. It takes special patriots to leap in the path of a bullet or throw themselves toward potential danger. We should be proud of them.

Well said and we are proud of them. They keep not only the Commander in Chief safe, but the rest of us too.

@ Jay – correction – that's about 60 days compared to about 180 up to this point in W's presidency and about 120 up to this point for Reagan – but I'm sure you were outraged at those two, right?

@ Bill – Should I feel sorry for you or should you get a new gig? The President deserves time off – or more accurately deserves to work some from other locations, which is closer to the truth.

@trex-"What a bunch of STUPID MORONIC TEA BAGGERS that believe (NOT THINK) a POTUS takes a true vacation."
I am not an Obama supporter, but NO PRESIDENT is ever really on vacation, not at Camp David, not at a Broadway play in New York and not at Crawford, Texas.
The SS has the final say in whether they arrive at the final destination by car or helicopter. They have the responsibility of protecting the POTUS and his family. Just like the Secret Service had the final say on 9/11 when they would not allow the POTUS to return immediately to DC and all the libs made fun and called Bush a coward. All I can say is "grow up" and get a clue about the real world.

Uhhhh...anyone else in the media even bother to check the weather? Light cloud coverage, winds less than 5mph and no precipitation between DC and Camp David, including the Catoctin Mountain approach. Call it for what it was – an easy way to get out of DC during the Labor Day rush. A rush-hour motorcade would have been another political disaster.

This is the most ridiculous news story because there is no news. The Secret Service has the responsibility for protecting the President and other government officials. They have the final say on certain issues such as transportation. They made a decision now let it stand unless you have a beef with them.

These men and women deserve our praise and they do not need their work to be politicized for second-guessed. CNN continues to post non-stories in the hopes of getting the BIG STORY. Give it up.

    • Jay in NC

Its the little things that bring the big guys down....

Shortly after 1 am on June 17, 1972, Frank Wills, a security guard at the Watergate Complex, noticed tape covering the latch on locks on several doors in the complex (allowing the doors to close but remain unlocked). He removed the tape, and thought nothing of it. An hour later, when he discovered that someone had re-taped the locks, Wills called the police.

    September 3, 2011 at 4:49 pm |
  17. Ken in NC

This is a non-news story. The Secret Service is responsible for the safety of many government officials and while the officials may have some input, the final decision rest with the Secret Service. They put their lives on the line to protect the official to which they are assigned so cut them some slack. If they decided to divert Marine One, it was their final call and that is doing their job.

The danger to America is not Barack Obama, but a citizenry capable of entrusting an inexperienced man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America . Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Obama. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools, such as those who made him their president."

@ Jay – "hit truck drivers in the head with bricks"??? Any reason in particular you picked that visual. Perhaps you should use references like "fly a small plane into an IRS office", "bomb a Federal Building", or "bomb a health clinic" or "murder a doctor"? Don't you think that better represents the face of domestic terrorism and presents a bigger threat to the POTUS. Those are the kind of unpatriotic enemies we should probably focus attention on – don't you think?

I have never used those words to describe you Liz, those are your choice. I have, however become more sure that there is no hope for any meeting in the middle with you, and since you won't there is no point in continuing. Only when I see you especially hard line in your comments will I step in and poke at you... rest assured it is that. I find no qualities of compromise or any willingness to look beyond the endof your next opinion (read that same as the last opinion) and that you condem any and all people who do not think the same as you. You yell that diversity is key, but you refuse to embrace your own position ..... So what are people supposed to think.... this is a liberall failing that I have noticed of late, and also a conservative failing as well. People that think this way will be the downfall of this great naton, and to me it seems that you are right in there leading the pack.

Bill, I haven't used a personal computer in about two years. My lap-top died back then and I have not had it replaced nor repaired. Since I also have internet on my cell phone, I have been doing all of my postings through it. It takes a little longer and takes quite a bit of effort/work, but it's worth it to me! So no mouse, OK? BTW, Bill anytime you add the conservatives to your statements, trying to show you get on both sides, it's not real! It's just an after thought for appearance; you don't fool me.

I do about half of these on my droid, and I have no problem.... just a few more steps is all.... and BTW LIZ I do not just include the conservative candidates as an after thought.... I have never tried tofool you on that score. I comment about liberals on the liberal blogs and I comment about conservatives ont the conservative blogs. Why should I give either radical pack of dogs any support? The point is th shake them up and try to get them to think... Not to allow them to sit back and agree with anobservation ..... If people like you, on both sides, don't change, there will be nothing left.... I have made this statement for as long asI have been posting with you..... and you statement proves that it is only your way of the highway.... try to remember the times that you criticized my spelling... that was because I was on my droid phone ....

Obama is the shepherd I did not want.
He leadeth me beside the still factories.
He restoreth my faith in the Republican party.
He guideth me in the path of unemployment for his

    party's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the bread

line, I shall fear no hunger, for his bailouts are with

me. He has anointed my income with taxes,

    My expenses runneth over.
Surely, poverty and hard living will follow me all

the days of my life, And I will live in a mortgaged

    home forever.

I resent being called part of a pack of dogs. I'm a liberal Democrat who stands for what I believe has some 'cause and effect' of what's hindering progression in AMERICA. I even resent your calling conservative Republicans a pack of dogs, who stand up for their views and what they believe about AMERICAS' problems! We aren't dogs! We are as GOP/TEAPARTYER Howard the 'DUMP OBAMA'! man is! He's one who even calls us LIBS 'CHEERLEADERS'! However, it stands to reason we'd ALL cheer for our OWN teams! GET IT?

Oh I am so sorry you resent that, porbably no more than your comparisont of me to a stung dog, or thetimes you called me racist, or the times you refused tp look up a common slang term in favor of holding your outrage over common sense. How is it that you and your feeling are far more important than anyone elses? Why do you feel that you can hurl insults at people but you can be resentful if insulted. Frankly the analogy is accurate.... Each and every party line toadie is just that ..... a pack of dogs chasing down the quarry......

Bill, judging by your perpetually obvious denial, narrow and biased views of descriptive examples, I can imagine you would see my most logical assessments of what 'IS'; (BTW, that should be 'hit dogs holler'), and my ability to detect, discern, observe and identify the 'most likely' oldest, biggest elephant in the room, as the same. That figures...it's ok! Changes nothing...I stand by my last comment to you. Insults? I'm insulted often, but I can take them! Sadly, there ARE times I have ditched them.

This picture at first stirs emotions of a close and loving relationship between a loving daughter and father. Further inspection shows a strikingly cold, managed and emotionless environment for children to grow up in.

Putting 2 & 2 together... If weather wasn't a concern, but the President's safety (and that of his daughter) was, then naturally the Secret Service would not want to telegraph this. It is unfortunate that the press was excluded, but this may have been a last minute change and security concerns may have prevented the customary practice being omitted.

In any case, the custom is a courtesy extended to the press, not an obligation nor a guaranteed point of access. It does not look very good for the press to be too insistent on such a point. If nothing else, the President's daughters ought to have an assurance of privacy.
