Kicking the habit

Last February Michelle Obama let the world in on some personal family business.  “Yes, he has” she said when asked if President Obama had quit smoking. “It’s been almost a year.”

More recently on Oct 31 the president was declared “tobacco free” by his doctor in the results from his second physical exam.   It seems the president, who had been known a known smoker, has kicked the habit.

Today The White House  released a video of President Obama congratulating people participating in the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout.     He directs smokers to contact smoking cessation experts at the Health and Human Services website HHS.gov.

There are a number of options to quit or cut back on smoking now, including electronic cigarettes, so see http://ecigwerks.blogspot.com/2011/11/electronic-cigarettes-can-help-us-smoke.html for more on the 2011 Great American Smokeout.

obama's current trip is another slippery obama attempt to run away, and temporarily take the heat off himself, for massive screw ups, like Solyndra, and Fast n' Furious. Claiming that his trip will open foreign markets, and thus create more American jobs is a joke. Thanks to obama, unions are already over paying American workers to a level that makes them uncompetative with their Asia Pacific counterparts ... and, makes the propects of under paid Asian workers buying over priced American goods a pipe dream ... not to mention adding in the cost of freight to get the American made goods thousands of miles away, to their Asian sales outlets. But, like with most of obama's sweeping promises and platitudes, obama hopes that enough suckers will once again buy into his B.S., in order to get himself relected ... because a BILLION dollars, may not be enough to buy the Presidency this time.

I'm watching those people in NEW YORK on the ED SHOW...GO OWS! The US 99%ers...fighting for us...'WE THE PEOPLE'! Thank you for your service! I wish I was able to go and occupy with them. I am praying for them. Go with GOD! GO OWS and GO OBAMA/BIDEN 2012! Yes we will again!

I am pretty sure the OWS people are not going with GOD – they are on the other side. The police are on the side of GOD. The libs are showing their true, socialist/hate America colors.

Just type the words "police beating" in your google search...that could change your mind.

        jean2009,

I just googled "injured cops at OWS". It appears 20 injured cops are sueing OWS. There are 2 sides to every story!

If I am a cop and people are resisting arrest, as they were obviously doing, I would do what I have to do. Too many cops have fallen on the job to deal with this type of crap without responding with necessary force. These clowns are throwing rocks, carrying sticks and throwing bottles. Mobs get out of control quickly. These clowns have been exposed for the nut cases they are. People have already died at these sites and I think it is not a streach to say more are going to. If it is my choice, I'd prefer not to see a cop, or any other innocent person, die. These clowns are creating chaos simply because they are lazy and prefer not to live in the real world. It is totally logical that the libs and dems have tied themselves to these nuts. Birds of a feather.

        John,

Large crowds draw all sorts of folks to include the "clowns" and" nut cases". I think the problem was OWS did not do such a good job self-policing themselves! The "clowns" and "nut cases" should have been pointed out. I also agree Pelsoi and other backers probably now wish they didn't rush into lending support!

Jean .. just google rape at occupy and see what you get... Now tell me ... who will you turn to in that case if the police are so bad?

I'm not so naive as to think the police are always on the side of some mythical being in the clouds. So good luck with that line of failed logic.

When there's a demonstration going on and the police, although they ARE trying to do THEIR jobs; which is what they're TOLD to do; oftentimes It's 'GET'R DONE BY WHATEVER MEANS NECESSARY', in this day and time...they should LOOK to get 'injured'! People are TIRED Steveo! People are sick and tired of the existing 'system'! Those police are still 'working'! MOST of the 'occupiers' are jobless, meaning NO taxes are being paid, no health insurance, some of them no pensions! Folks are sick of the BS, Steveo!

I understand people are frustrated no doubt but, the violent elements in the OWS should have been disassociated with and pointed out to the authorities. The handful of violent folks is sooner or later color the OWS. Violence begets violence. You mention that the cops are working and the cops are not. You know the cops are state /city employees. Everybody can't work in the public sector. Somebody has to go private! I'm just saying, these violence is not helping the OWS. Being tired and frustrated is NO excuse for violence!

Yo said people are sick and tired of the system. Then why are they in NYC instead of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave and the Capital in DC? That is where the system is.

If you can get bold or 'froggy' enough to run upon a hungry, jobless, beatened, mace-sprayed mans face, spraying water, sicking dogs, pushing and pulling him, standing on his neck and back, bashing his head in and all the time you're dressed up in riot gear, (when there isn't one) carrying shields, black-jacks and guns! What do you expect? Somebody's going to be 'brave' or maybe 'spooked' enough to fight back! BELIEVE IT!

You'd be arresting a 99%er for what? Making use of his right to freedom of speech and right to demonstrate? If you were a cop and someone was resisting arrest, you'd do what? In this situation you'd hopefully just end up on the 'injured list', John! We are sick of your system! Those 99%ers are out there fighting for their lives! YOU, the GOP, well I'll even say some DEMS in WASHINGTON aren't! I support and thank them from the bottom of my heart; wish I was young and healthy enough to be there myself!

Liz– I support the right of these folks to demonstrate, but not to harm, threaten or impede the rights or safety of others. They are not fighting for their lives or anyone else's, they are speaking, mand not even with a united voice. No solutions are being offered to any of the problems they identify.

Okay, what about the latest news the CBO has just layed out??? The stimulus package, while providing a barrely moderate push will drag the economy even further down in 10 years.... this is your idea of fixing it?

      November 19, 2011 at 6:36 pm |
      • jean2009

Well Bill did those stimulus checks Bush mailed everyone help? Frankly we would have been better off had he not returned tax refunds, calling it stimulus. Stimulus is exactly what Bush called the checks mailed in 2004. I suggest reading The Bloomberg Business Week for Jan. 21, 2003 -The Secret of Bush's Stimulus Package by Howard Gleckman

But, yes stimulus to put people back to work is needed now, education to train the unemployed and returning veterans is needed now, and until enough trade and jobs can be provided to take care of the need for employment, stimulus will be needed...regardless of what the predictions for the future say.

In the real world people deal with the most pressing situation, one at a time, as they appear.

Posted on Sara's right about rejiggering the corols. The people in the collective that makes Magpie Chandeliers are making lots of chandeliers out of lots of recycled materials. Two implications: first, they've gotten a lot of practice at doing this. Second, they have a lot more materials on hand to choose from, and they know what's worked in the past, so it's easier for them to pick out coordinated corols and get the balance just right.I think the understructure of the chandelier shown at Anthropologie is done in very pale pastel shades of the same corols used in the garlands of artificial flowers. The color intensity in the garlands is tightly controlled and balanced all well-coordinated off-shades that never go darker than medium. Forgive yourself. Cheer up. Anyone who could duplicate an effect like that using stuff they've got lying around the house has way, way too much stuff lying around the house.

      November 20, 2011 at 6:05 pm |

@Victoria from experience....as a starter you have to want to quit. You put them down and stop...it is not easy, but then nothing you really want ever is. I know, I quit 35 years ago cold-turkey for Thanksgiving. For several weeks you crave them, you find yourself reaching for where you kept them, but hang in....that too will pass.
Now, the smell of someone who smokes is offensive.

on pg 3 of the 71 pg report that the ifgures cited are an average summary of three years, and all corporations.Ostensibly, the federal tax code requires corporations to pay 35 percent of their profits in income taxes. And in fact, some of the 280 corporations in our study did pay close to the 35 percent official tax rate. But the vast majority paid considerably less. And some paid nothing at all. Over the three years covered by our study, the average effective tax rate for all 280 companies was only 18.5 percent. For the past two years, 2009 and 2010, the effective tax rate for all 280 companies averaged only 17.3 percent, less than half of the statutory 35 percent rate.Did I, or did I not point out that a company pays an effective 35% of their taxable income, which is not their gross profits, but profits after legal IRS business deductions? When a company experiences a loss instead of a profit, they aren't going to be paying any taxes, oh naive one. Not to mention that the past three years has been economic recession, so profits are less apt to be on the books. And that the Forbes shows you what the effective rate paid compared to their gross profits noting that the majority of companies in 2009 paid a hefty chunk of taxes that bears no resembles to the carefully packaged and nuanced 17%-18% average rate you want to bandy about, with your CJT pals. It's sleazy, dishonest, and has the agenda to promote anti-corporate hatred.. which you, yourself, constantly parrot. Go find a dumber audience, Greg. This crap don't hit our windshields, because we've figured out how you game the numbers for propaganda.Reply

They (WALLSTREET) is the entity who's had the Capitol in Washington, DCs' head on the chopping block of greed and power! 1600 Pennsylvania Ave has historically been forced to follow suit; but becoming fairly questionable at this point!
