President's Retail Therapy for Small Business Saturday

On one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year, President Obama and first daughters Sasha and Malia dropped by a local area bookstore in support of the 2nd annual Small Business Saturday.  The First Family, known for their bookstore outings provided some Thanksgiving retail therapy to Kramerbooks & Afterwords Cafe in Washington's Dupont Circle neighborhood.  The family was dressed casually, with both girls wearing jeans.  The visit didn’t seem like a spur of the moment decision, since the area in front of the store had been cordoned off with yellow police tape.

The President and first daughters were greeted with applause, as some stunned shoppers stopped in their tracks at the scene of Secret Service and travelling Media in the crowded bookstore.  The First Family browsed together, spending time in the travel/writing section of the trendy bookstore/restaurant known for its eclectic variety of books.

The President greeted 5-year old Alexander Lee Mussehl at the behest of the youngster’s Grandmother, Susan Lee of Washington. Obama asked Alexander if he was doing some Christmas shopping.  The President then responded for him “Well, we're starting early. This is 'Small Business Saturday.' So we're out here supporting small business."

Daughter Malia,  loaded down with an armful of books, also said hello to young Alexander.  The White House provided this list of the books purchased at the shop by the first family.

nstead of another useless photo op, and books on how to destroy the American dream with socialism ... obama should read, and recommend all the Horatio Alger books. These books exemplify the American dream of expending hard work, and pursuing free enterprise, in order to go from Rags to Riches. And, although this concept is what enabled America to become the most successful country in history, it's a concept which obama has never experienced, and doesn't understand.

In response to S. Positive ... Yes, I hate injustice ... and, GOD HELPS THOSE WHO HELP THEMSELVES !!!
You obama lovers, and occupiers, with your sense of entitlement, need to get off your lazy butts, and work for a living, like the rest of us. We productive, hard working Americans are tired of obama, and you liberals, taking our hard earned money, and bailing out corrupt, failed companies ... we're tired of paying government workers more than we make ... we're tired of obama using our hard earned money to cronies, like Solyndra ... we're tired of academics, and unions who get paid, get raises, and get pensions, which are not based on performance, like the rest of us. Because of obama, and you crooks, all you have to do for guaranteed security, is just show up ... it's called tenure ... it's called voting present 127 times ... it's called getting the Nobel Prize for doing nothing. The rest of us hard working Americans don't have those luxuries. You academics and government workers don't even get fired when you screw up, or don't produce.

You should read Mark Twain's 1879 satirical book "Poor Little Stephen Girard" that punched holes in the Horatio Alger mythology. Alger's mythical poor-boy-done-good was known as pure baloney before the late 1870's, and only stupid people buy into that crap now.

The only thing that has made this country the great country it is today, is the unionized movement of workers whose campaign for better pay, better living, and better working conditions are what raised this country to what it is today. That an a desire by all Americans for better everything....roads, bridges, schools, colleges, service, and conveniences...
Howard the mental midget...I'm so totally not surprised! I just knew you were expecting to win the lottery some day...Ha!

President Obama knows and understands much more than you ever will.

The Horatio Alger concept is NOT a mythology, it's how Sears Roebuck started with a push cart ... it's how Apple started in Steve Jobs' parent's garage, Millions of Americans, from Mrs. Fields cookies, to Henry Ford started their businesses, employed themselves, and eventually employed thousands of orthers. Barack Obama, and Mark Twain never ran a business, Mark Twain wrote fiction. The hard working people who started businesses in America preceded the employees and eventually, the unions, who prospered from the businesses these people initiated. Unions never started a business. And, as for your messiah, barack obama ... who never even worked at a real job, let alone started, or ran a business. Obama sucks a TRILLION dollars from the hard working people who have to sink or swim in our economy, and uses it to bail out those who fail. He squanders a half a billion dollars of other people's hard earned money, and irresponsibly hands it over to businesses he know nothing about, like Solyndra. When he screws up, he just prints more money, resulting in the rest of America paying $50 for a bag of groceries, and $60 to fill up our gas tanks. Obama supports the artificial method of unions, which over compensate lazy workers, providing them with guaranteed pay raises, tenure, and pensions ... which has nothing to do with whether they produce, or perform. This has resulted in jobs and industries leaving America, because we can't compete. This has resulted in government workers making more than the hard working citizens in the private sector, who are required to pay their salaries. Liz, you don't know what you're talking about. I've built businesses from scratch, without public assistance, which ended up paying the salaries of others. You, and your ideology are perpetuating a LIE ... and, obama is taking it a step further, by trying to legislate it. You have no idea of what free enterprise is ... or, what built America ... Your philosophy is communism. It sounds noble to think that unions and workers will save America ... but, the Soviet Union has already proven that it's a failure, resulting in mile long lines for basic goods, and the suffering of millions ... whereas Free Enterprise has created the greatest prosperity in history ... so, Liz, it's obvious that YOU, and obama are the mental midgets ... and, unfortunately, if you prevail, millions of Americans will suffer as a result.

As you said Howard.... Horatio Alger wrote fiction; and it was recognized by Mark Twain and his contemporaries as being just that fiction.

Steve Jobs was adopted and his adoptive parents moved heaven and earth to see that he had the education needed to achieve success. Mrs. Fields filed for bankruptcy in 2008, went through restructuring and is again facing bankruptcy as of Nov 18, 2011. It looks like they may be ceding control of the business to creditors.

For your information, being able to efficiently run a community project is much better experience for governing than the experience of running a business. Knowing how to build consensus and providing the means for people to work together for their own self-interest is far more productive in governing than knowing how to sell things. Businesses are profit oriented where as communities, cities, counties and states are oriented to providing infrastructure and working services.

The unions, who are in bed with the corrupt democrats,
are what ruined the American middle class.
Initially their intentions might have been good, but
they ended up forcing overpayment to workers,
automatic pay raises, regardless of productivity, or performance,
and, mandatory pensions ... all of which, made America
non-competitve, and sent American jobs overseas.
Now we hardly make anything here, and we pay
Chinese workers hundreds of billions annually for
merchandise that used to be made in the U.S.A..

Howard subscribes to the socio-economic theory that if you lick enough rich people's boots, you'll be one of them someday. Rich people love it and they love it when stupid people like Howard spread it around.

Hey Howard, nothing's better for the rich than teeming masses of poor, uneducated, unhealthy, boot lickers who think if they lick hard and long enough, they'll get a piece of that rich man pie.

Why don't YOU do some more licking, actually. Then you'll be rich just like your heroes/gods. The rest of us with some sense will act like Americans.

Unfortunately there are many Howards in Washington right now and like the man who put the sign up about not hiring until President Obama is fired that allows his hate to keep hardworking people out of work. The man who put the sign up is too poisoned with hate to realize that the president's job act would greatly benefit him. Their hate has poisoned their way of thinking and it has caused lots of failures within this country. The GOP are running on that Hate and I hope the sound minded Americans realize that in 2012. Hate is a serious illness which is very contagious. Where was all this hate when Bush/Cheney took the lives of many Americans and all our SS benefits and other tax money with their lies? Where were you HOWARD?

barack obama, a completely inexperienced candidate, is promoted and sold to the the American public ... and even wins the Nobel Prize, for doing nothing. Staged events and photo ops abound. This empty suit, upstart, polarizes America, and preaches the downfall of all the conventional wisdom which built this country. He never had a job, yet dictates anti-capitalist policies, which result in massive unemployment, a national credit downgrade, sinking real estate values, record gas prices, half a trillion dollar loans to losers like Solyndra, 4 Trillion dollars in additional debt, in just 3 years, etc., etc. etc. ... meanwhile the biased main stream media, who never vetted this fool in the first place, and blindly devoted obama comrades, like the brain washed few, posting here, continue to make excuses for him, and provide him with qualities, and accomplishments, he simply does not possess.

If you want to really understand how people succeed, read Malcolm Gladwell's book, "Outliers." It takes more than just hard work – it takes opportunity, infrastructure, assistance from others and a fair amount of luck. For example, Bill Gates just happened to live near the University of Washington, where he and his buddies could rent time in the computer lab, allowing them to hone their skills. Yes, he worked his fanny off, but would he have succeeded in computers if he'd been born somewhere without such easy access to them as a student? Ditto for Warren Buffet; he readily admits he has a knack for making good investments, but acknowledges that if he hadn't been born in the U.S. where he had the opportunity and infrastructure supporting his talent, he wouldn't today be one of the wealthiest people on the planet.

Moral of the story: What has made our country great is the investment in and maintenance of infrastructure, education, and opportunity – and reasonable regulations on capitalism so that the public doesn't get chewed up and spat out by the rampant greed that would otherwise result (and turn us into just another third-world nation).

President Obama understands this – you would do well to learn this, too.

Howard should try being a community organizer. That's a tougher job than president and a job all presidents should consider. The problem with most presidents is they do not truly know the people they represent. Not many have suffered any true hardships. Most have been handed their wealth through generations without doing any hard work. We need to stop voting for those people who have the most money and vote for folks who have gained their wealth through hard work and humanitarian beliefs.

I think that all the answers given I've heard about the emnoocy are poor to say the least and the worst of them all was the one by the president elect.I think most americans are clueless as to how the money market really works.I say this because no one would agree that the solution would be to dump more money into the money supply to cure the problem. This causes the value of the dollar to decrease which means that it will cost more to buy less of anything.Does anyone know history?Does anyone know what the goverment had to do to fix the emnoocy during the depression? They had to decrease the size of the money supply to bring the value of the dollar back up.The only way to fix inflation is to either add more gold into our reserves or take away money from the money supply. This is not rocket science it is simple math. This is where it all begins and ends. And the only solution for the emnoocy lies in that information.Several factors contributed to get us to the point we are with the emnoocy but I will only talk about one right now.It is a fault of President Clinton. He signed a bill that allowed big companies tax cuts by moving there operations out of the united states. This did not affect our country overnight but is destroying us over time.So I got to thinking and realized we need a solution that is good for big business and good for the average american to.Because of our minimum wages laws it cost more for our companies to make products here than if they setup shop in a third world country with no minimum wage requirement.Making it next to impossible to compete with companies that use that labor. So what we need is to get those business back in the U.S. and the jobs they bring with them.So how do we do that?My suggestion is threw imports and exports. If we lowered the export rates this would give our companies more of a chance to compete with sweatshop labor maybe give incentive to companies to base there operations here to take advantage of the lowered export rates. The second step would be to inflat the price on importing to the country.Make it so high if any company wants a part of our market that it will be apparent that they are losing profits from these import taxes and would be making more money if they based there business from here which would inturn create more jobs. This import tax would also raise the price of there products making it a level playing field competing for market share with our companies. Then with the money we are getting on the imports taxes take away the inflation in the money supply so the value of the dollar goes back up.This way we can use there money to fix our inflation instead of struggling to do it with our own.We also need to stop this unneeded spending with the war. This is not good for us it is good for the defense contractors.Everytime you hear that the government is spending more money on the war the less that dollar in your pocket can buy.So in reality if you support the war you support the emnoocy we are currently living in weather you realize it or not.Right now we are living in a deception about the gasoline. It is so low right now but how?The price of everything else is way up.This worries me and I wait for the other shoe to drop.I feel that we are getting buttered up to lighten the blow on something bigger.People always say the emnoocy is bad all over the world and they use that as a crutch.I just would like to know when we started comparing ourselves to everybody else. When you are the greatest at anything you can not compare yourself to anybody else. You can only compare yourself to yourself or the potential you have that is what makes you so great and better than anyone else.Other opinions I would like to voice is the need to do away with the electoral college. It is outdated and unneeded because of the technology today. We should never end up with a president that does not have the support of the people. This takes away from the concept of a democracy. It makes our elections a farce to some extent. Its supporters say it has only failed us twice and I say that is 2 times to many.I also disagree with the patriot act. This law basically strips 7 of the 1st ten amendments. This law was put in to affect to make it easier for the government to protect us.I say we have been around for a few hundred years and never needed the patriot act.If the people in charge cant keep us safe as the people that held there job before them did then they should be no different than I or you at our jobs.Which means that they should be replaced by someone that can do the job.

I totally agree with Bill and Barack is a peecfrt example of his point that a force for the positive is a difficult target. Barack knew from day one that the only way to approach this campaign was to be true to himself and to understand his bid for the presidency as a force for the positive. He knows that staying true to this purpose has been the key to his success to date. Despite many efforts to throw him off his center, Barack has held onto himself with exceptional authenticity. Barack's answer to the final question at Sunday's event was a good example of this while the questioner did not have any negative intent the question presented an opportunity for Barack to easily pander to one constituency at the expense of others. He resisted that challenge, without being demeaning to the questioner by simply answering with honesty. It is so refreshing to think that we could soon have a President who speaks to us with such honesty and clarity of purpose.

  2. seriously???

Howard– read those books again. Horatio Alger books were all fantasy, and instead of hard work paying off, they all ended up with the protagonist getting a big unexpected windfall. Your comment about Obama is so far off base it's not even funny. Why don't you learn the facts about this great President instead of blindly spouting a bunch of garbage that's not even remotely true.

    November 26, 2011 at 6:42 pm |
    • Howard

In response to seriously??? ... Horatio Alger ACTUALLY used the concept of HOPE and CHANGE, but along with personal responsibility, perseverance, and hard work to succeed. Maybe he used fictional characters, and stories to present these qualities, and to inspire readers who wanted to become the Masters of their Fate ... instead of sitting back and waiting for someone else, like their government to do it for them. To people like you and obama, this concept seems like fantasy, but in the Real World, this is how individuals have actually started and built businesses ... which eventually employed others. It takes belief in one's self and courage to strike out on one's own and start a business, but it represents self sufficiency, and freedom ... like the Americans who risked crossing this country in covered wagons, to build a better life. People like you and obama, are cowards, who cry for others to pay your way, create jobs for you, and bail you out when you stumble.

With FDR's New Deal, our country enjoyed a 40-year economic expansion. Why? Because the government invested in our people, with everything from the GI Bill educating and training thousands of returning soldiers, to building the interstate highway system, dams, bridges and airports that support commerce, to electrifying our country, to building schools, to the myriad other things that our government has done to promote and maintain our civil society. The vast majority of Americans only take a handout when absolutely necessary; if you're looking for lazy bums, turn your attention to all the American corporations who, instead of coming up with new technologies and industry, are taking their money overseas where they can make a fast buck off of cheap labor and shoddy goods.

Or take a look at the Wall Street yahoos who privatize success and socialize failures, whining that if they don't get their bonuses, they'll take their "best and brightest" and leave (never mind that these are the same yahoos who drove the world economy into the ditch in the first place). And before you start hollering, BUSH is the one who bailed out the Wall Streeters.

You need to get off your hateful horse and start looking around at our country and her people, turn off Fox and all the other Koch brother lackeys, think for yourself and get out their and support President Obama who's actually DOING something to help us (unlike the Repubs in the House and Senate whose only goal is to defeat the President, regardless of how much harm they do to our country in the process).

        Thanks ...Think Again.
I was born when Roosevelt was president. Without the investment made in this country and the American people, which was made during that time period, we would not be the country we are today.

The only reasoning behind the people like the Koch brothers is their absolute fear that we will be successful in fueling our future with clean energy. We have seen that hand at work before.

    Good for Mr. Obama,
I don't care what you think about the guy as a president, he is illustrating good economic behavior in tough times. As we all sink, corporations keep making more money. The GOP's claim that less corporate taxes equals more jobs is flat-at-wrong. They just keep the money... or, as we learned during Reagan's administration and Perry's governership, lower corporate taxes lead to more minimum wage jobs! Yeah... because poor people want to work at Walmart for ever... We need to support local businesses and agriculture.

If you take the GOP/TP they seem to have only two books: One of them for “thumping” and the other from their master “Norquist”. 2012 cannot come soon enough to vote all the GOP/TP “pledges” out!

I'm sure the gentleman known as the reading president is keeping pace with Bush....but Bush will need to pick up the pace, since he has written one book and President Obama has written 5 adult books, plus one childrens' book.
Word of note....her name is Condoleezza.

ThinkAgain and Jean2009, I am so glad you came our way. The truth could not be plainer. This Alger conservative-speak (not the Party, the concept) bs is almost unbearable, but we need to be understanding of others. This "if you work hard and believe in the free market" crap is what has pervaded our society and has become an acceptable "norm". People who think this way (Howard and Liz Carter and such) are not in touch with economic realities, but are high on themselves (especially themselves), talking points and certain news mediums that are anti-Obama. Nothing more.

They sent my Tax Return back AGAIN because of my response to the question: "Please list all dependents."

      I replied –
      12 million illegal immigrants;
      3 million crack heads;
42 million unemployable people on food stamps,
      2 million criminals in over 243 prisons;
      Half of Mexico ; and
3/4 of the U.S. House and Senate.

Apparently this was not an acceptable answer.

Howard, you cut and pasted these ridiculous comments out of an email that is routing around the world. Nothing original – just crap. By the way, does your taxes pay for the schools, roads, highways, infrastructure that you use and that all corporate entities in your working community also use to accomplish their daily objectives. Have you attended schools in the U.S.; have you ever received unemployment compensation; have you or any family member close to you received social security or medicare? Are you human?

Interesting how you obama lovers respond to comments against obama. Its race its hate...etc.. Fact is he has created a mess of which is unprecedented in the history of this country...both domestically and abroad. He was unqualified to be president and yes he is a millionaire throughout the sale of his books that did nothing but promote him and his marxist ideology...and fools bought it. obama ran on hope and change and uniting this country...after he did his best to vilify President Bush and tear this country apart...the barac hussain obama experiment is over folks...we need a real qualified and uniting leader...NOOBAMA 2012!

@jerry....all Obama has to do is display a timeline of events that has lead us to this weak economy and the record will show the steps he's taking STOPPED us from going into another great depression. This is the hand that was dealt to him....NOT one he created. Ask yourself....what hand was dealt to Bush...one with trillions of dollars in our surplus. Someone please educate jerry...he's clueless!!

      November 27, 2011 at 1:03 pm |
      • Howard

If obama created a time line, it would be filled with self-serving lies, and omissions of the truth. Obama's corrupt cronies in the Department of Education are already revising American history, to support obama's political agenda and brain wash our youth. You can see it everyday, in obama's attempts to discredit and demonize American traditions, symbols, history, free enterprise ... and even his removal of God from his speeches and our public buildings.

President Obama did NOT create the economic events that began occurring in 2001 and came to a head in September 2008 with the bank and market crash. Many of us asked why President Bush did not put 2 wars in the budget for 8 years and were told if we ask then we are unpatriotic. The Bush tax cuts to the wealthiest (which should have expired last year) were also not put in the budget – just something free that we pay for to help them out. These failures of Bush have come to over 7 trillion dollars and still mounting.

obama may not have created the economic problems which began in 2001, thanks to idiots, like Barney Frank, but he did make it much worse, in a very short time, by squandering a TRILLION dollars on his unconstitutioinal, corrupt, 'pass it to see what's in it', pork laden, obamacare monstrosity ... and, by increasing our national debt by 4 TRILLION dollars, in just three years, resulting in what could be the first of many national credit down grades. obama is a chemist, who turns money into sh it !!! Not quite accurate. The housing bubble started under Bush 41 and was accelerated under Clinton! Bush 41 wanted EVERYBOBY to own a house and Clinton forced banks to change how they loan money (sub prime mortages). All of this fell into Bush 43's lap. Clinton was a MAJOR player in the economy starting to fail! We are too busy rooting our parties to research the truth!

        November 28, 2011 at 4:18 pm |
      • jean2009

President Clinton didn't force anything. The mortgage meltdown was due to weakening of the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933, by passage of The Gramm, Leach, Bliley Act of 1999. The three writers of that legislation were Phil Gramm, Jim Leach and Thomas Bliley all three Republicans. It was signed in November 1999.

        Jean2009,

I appreciate you pointing out the fact that bill was signed in 1999. What you have failed to mention was who signed it...A DEMOCRAT! Bill Clinton! You also failed to mention how two DEMOCRATIC Senators (Schuner and Dodd) added an additional provision into that bill. While you were pointing out the three major Republican players, you have failed to point out the three major DEMOCRATIC ones. Once again, the DEMS are and were just as culpable as the GOP!!

I would like to know who you do think is qualified....since the president we currently have in Barack Obama is extremely well qualified by any standards. Many of our past presidents have not served as so much as a state senator let alone a U. S. Senator. Both of which this president has. We have had 14 presidents who have neither been a U. S. Senator, or a governor of a state.

George W. Bush although having served as a governor definitely did not show he had what it takes to be a qualified anything....let alone even to be governor. The most he actually qualified for was being the scion of a not to good past president.

Do you think Gingrinch? Sorry he proved his total inability when he was a member of congress...due to unethical behavior of all types.

Are you so financially naive as to think the monumental mistakes made on Bush's watch ended the day he left office? If that is the case, then you are the total fools that I think Howard and you are. It took 20 plus years to see daylight after Reagan left office, and it may very well take longer to outlive Bush's mistakes.

Whoa Howard. Can you explain exactly how this country is headed toward socialism? You seem just to have accepted that as a fact and are now running around with outdated references to support some vicious hate mongering against anyone who is not on your side including the president and your fellow citizens. There seems to be a rumor started somewhere that the reason the economy is in trouble is because some people are getting a free ride. Can you tell us all what % of the US budget is spent on freeloaders?
If you are referring to the wall street bailout, that was already approved and underway by the outgoing Bush admin when Obama took office. Instead of playing politics, Obama went along with what was in retrospect, good for the country.
As for GM and Chrysler, I think the positive results speak for themselves.

Joe ... stop driving while staring into the rear view mirror ... barack ovomit has been an embarassment of a President for over THREE YEARS !!! Besides, I don't buy into the three year blame game, ovomit, and you ovomit stooges have been spouting in lockstep, as an excuse for your messiah's non-stop screw ups. And, if you read another black person's book (by Condelezza Rice), you'll discover that GWB was not dumb, as you lying liberals keep trying to mischaracterize him ... he was actually much more decisive, and a much better leader, than the inept, empty suit, barack ovomit. And, your assumption about me, just make an ass out of you. I have earned an honorable discharge serving our country ... have worked several years as a teacher ... I have supported a family, raised children, and grandchildren ...and I have started and built several successful business, where I have created employment for several other Americans ... so, joe ... what have you done with your life ???

Relax, Howard. Someday a self mad businessman will become president and everything will be great. You know, just like George W. Bush. Wait a minute. No. He lost millions in business until he was given a percentage of the Rangers in a sweetheart deal of epic proportions. OK, like Bill Clinton. No, he wasn't a business man. All right, GHW Bush. I'm sorry, no. He headed the CIA. Well, Reagan? An actor who avoided WW2. Carter? Well, he did own a peanut farm. Ford? Lifetime politician, just like Nixon, Johnson, and Kennedy. Ike? War hero. Roosevelt? Patrician lifetime politician. So, the one businessman is Dubya, and that turned out really well. Perhaps, Howard, you need a new perspective.
