Countdown to State of the Union

Washington (CNN) – President Barack Obama is "very engaged" in preparing his Tuesday State of the Union address, but "not at a stage yet where he's practicing," according to White House spokesman Jay Carney.

Carney told reporters Friday that the president continued to work with his chief speechwriter, Jon Favreau, on his remarks.

The Constitution requires the president "…shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union…"  Traditionally, presidents have used the speech as a platform to lay out their priorities for the year ahead.

In a video emailed to supporters Saturday, Obama said the remarks were still a work in progress, noting "I'm actually not done writing it yet so there might be a few late nights between now and then."

Looking to draw in viewers beyond the traditional television networks, the White House is touting an interactive live-streamed "enhanced version of the speech" on its website .

Senior administration officials plan to take part in a post-address discussion that will include a live audience and questions from Twitter, Facebook and Google, Carney said.

Less than 24 hours after delivering his address, the president will hit the road to promote his policies with a three-day, five-state tour that will include stops in Cedar Rapids, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Denver and Detroit.

The trip is already coming under fire from some Republicans, like House Speaker John Boehner, who said it was politically motivated.  "If the president wasn't campaigning, why next week after he gives his address to a joint session of Congress is he traveling to five battleground states?"

Boehner added, "Now I might have been born at night, but it wasn't last night."

hey...Love hearing the reality / facts impaired crowd on this one. How about we plug in a couple of facts...I know you and your crowd hate those things but let's give it go anyway shall we?

Which administration lost 8 million jobs?....Buehler, Buehler Howard...anyone? That would be the Bush Administration
Which administration had 16 consecutive months of private sector job growth ? Buehler, Buehler Howard...anyone? That would be the Obama Administration.
      Ok for extra credit,
Which administration oversaw the 1st increase of manufacturing sector jobs since the '80s....That would be the Obama industry.

Great, the Obama administration...adds jobs, the GOP/Tea Potty non-thinkers, can't even figure out the facts. You lose Howey...Now go lay down somewhere, take your meds, but give it a rest so you don't further embarass yourself with non-fact based spew

State of the Union: people have given up looking for jobs, a gallon of gas is $4 bucks, zero economic growth, people splayed out on sidewalks and defecating to make a political point - at the encouragement of the President of the United States?

You can keep the change. I'm voting for the Republican in November. And I don't care what his ex-wife says about him or if he's a Mormon - or whatever the liberal idiot media says about him.

Liberals don't create wealth. The only thing they create is economic malaise, which sums up the state of the union.

        FACTS:

        1) by expanding gov. 5 times including debt
        2) increased cost of healthcare to unsustainable llevels despite claiming obamacare would reduce costs
        3) Increased food stamp roles to record levels
        4) Expanded gov. control over private industries
        5) Pulled out of Iraq despite generals on the ground warnings causing thousands of civil war deaths, posturing with Navy, war with Iran
        6) Despite needing approval has had Marines fighting and dying in Lybia prior to the ouster of Gadafi, under thhe guise of peacekeeping non military force (you better check your facts on Lybia).
        7) No work for the women on the keystone pipeline
        8) HaHaHaHaHa-can't even respond to this stupidity–just look to Arizona for this Presiden't border policy.
        9) Check your facts, the gulf states were severely restricted by the gov. interference to clean up the mess, and when it was all over the administration says we are not sure where all the oil went. BP and the racists cleaned it up not gov.
        10) Why is it so hard to find ones birth record.

All this with a majority in both houses of congress until Americans woke up during the mid-terms and the brakes were put on the food stamp president. A majority of Americans wanted and voted for tea party candidates to not only say no but hell no!!

Howard: shouldn't it be the right thing to ask BP to clean up rather than spending tax money??

You think government should clean up for BP?? Why??

Howard, have you noticed that no GOP presidential candidate has shown his/her birth certificate. Why? Because they look like "Americans"? Racist!

You do realize that we are in the 21 Century...Global Economy....out and in sourcing of foreign workers...work visas handed out more today than every before....Bill Gate's Microsoft supports Obama but hires thousands for high tech foreign workers.
The real issues for America is in the Here And Now....No one cares what Bush, Reagan or any other past prez did or did not do over past 5 years, no one except the dems. I live in the Here and Now and Obama is IN the White House now! He is a failure to many of us.

It is clear there is a turmoil of thoughts in every GOP's followers mind. They know the traditional hard core Republican game is not the need of the hour (that is why the fizz of Tea party is over and Sarah Palin is hiding away only to surface here or there with bit pieces trying to be relevant). They know Mit Romney is right but then he is by and large on the same path as Obama so they perceive a conflict and consider him unelectable. They know Obama has been able to pull out things from an almost bottonless pit to which Bush administration has driven and that he (Obama) is now ready to drive the final nail in GOP coffin as he surges along. So what to do.
If I were you mate, I would swtch from GOP to Dem. This is no time to stand on false egos. I would back Obama in rejuvenating America and rearchitecting it (major architectural repairs). This would set America to be a leader for another half century or so.

Trace you forgot to point out which administration has overseen the lowest rate of health care cost increase in a decade......actually the lowest rate of increase since 1997......Obama administration.
Which obviously means the health care legislation savings are already beginning to kick in.

Is IN Gov Mitch Daniels the best response to President Obama's State of the Union?

      August 24, 2010
Letter to the Editor Aug. 25, 2010
      CNHI

      To the Editor:

Rich Lowry's and Brian Howey's commentaries in the Aug. 11 Hendricks County Flyer were a great PR job for Gov. Mitch Daniels. However, the recent Indiana unemployment drop from 10.5 percent to 9.8 percent was probably the result of the Bush and Obama bailout of GM and Chrysler, discouraged job applicants dropping out of the labor force (100,000 manufacturing jobs were eliminated since Daniels' election and prior to the financial/banking crises in 2008), imported cheap foreign labor (some who are illegal), and the Obama stimulus ($11 million in Hendricks County instead of collecting impact fees on new development) including energy grants and tax cuts for the middle class.

WTHR TV 13 of Indianapolis investigated Daniels' jobs claims and has found inaccurate numbers. Eli Lilly was given a $700 million tax cut a few years ago to create good paying jobs; since that time, they have eliminated thousands of jobs. The $8,701 tax incentive per new job that Daniels claims has saved Indiana taxpayers money includes retaining existing jobs and does not include local tax abatements, TIF, tax-free bonds, and new business infrastructure paid by taxpayers. The overwhelming majority of jobs created in Hendricks County are poverty wage jobs in warehousing and retail (good paying manufacturing jobs have been exported to foreign countries as the result of U.S. taxpayer incentives and bad trade deals) that are eligible for EITC ($5,700/family), Medicaid, and many other subsidies paid by taxpayers or added to the federal debt.

The Indiana budget surplus is due to Daniels owing the federal taxpayers billions of dollars for unemployment and Medicaid; and the Obama bailout of states including Indiana. Business development costs and property taxes were shifted to wheel taxes and residential property owners. When those taxes increased by 700 to 800 percent in some cases, Daniels raised sales taxes from 40 to 80 percent (restaurant and bar food and drinks) to buy down these excessive increases by raising the homestead tax credit which has since decreased by 80 percent in 2009 and another 45 percent in 2010.

Stagnant home prices due to Bush's housing bust have contributed to lower property tax increases. Teachers, police, fire, and other public employees are losing their jobs; if not for the Obama stimulus funding earmarked to keep these jobs and to maintain school class sizes. Tolls on the Indiana toll road sold by Daniels have doubled for infrequent drivers, fees have increased up to 300 percent (e.g. state drivers license), Indianapolis water and sewer rates will skyrocket due to corporate ownership, and my fixed wire phone basic rate has increased 22 percent since Daniels deregulated.

Obama and Democrats are wrong by basing their job creating strategy on "borrowing and spending" and bailing out states like Indiana. Good paying American jobs would be created that pay employee health/medical insurance costs with no bailouts/incentives to banks and corporations and no $13 trillion debt, if Democrats and Republicans would do the following: First, repeal all sales taxes and replace the lost revenue with an import tax/tariff on imported labor and manufactured goods. Second, repeal all local tax incentives that shift business costs to taxpayers and that create poverty wage jobs; or change these incentives to pay a living wage, minimum wage of $14 per hour (parent with one child).

Where are the Tea Party endorsements for these strategies?

I see. You'd rather want a president who lost jobs, like GWB, Hoover?

BTW, do you know Reagan lost a lot of jobs too? Do you know in Reagan's time, the jobless rate was the highest since WWII??

@NOBrain 2012, what different does it make that the president is whiter than anybody in any picture....unless you are a closet racist / bigot. Althought fortunately for you, This President is even working to help the mentally/intellectually deficient, such as you. So go ahead and do your hair, as this President will be speaking plain english, so you probably won't understand it anyway. I would imagine you long for Obama's predecessor, Dubya, in that you would rather have a president that has the inability to formulate a proper sentence ...i.e. where proper english is a 2nd language. ...and this pleases you? Its obvious intellect is divisive for people of your ilk...Best Episodes of the Larry Springer shows for you – right?

he will end up governing from the middle now – once they get IN – they govern from whatever their party is – ( either far left, or far right ) whichever or whatever the party is, so they can cater to their base -that's the way politics is . BUT – when they are running for "re-election" then it's all a different ball game -that's the way it is – been that way for years, no matter who's in office. Obama will end up governing towards the middle , or even a little to the right, so he can appease everybody. ( sorry to be a bearer of bad tidings to everyone )

    January 21, 2012 at 8:45 pm |
    • jean2009

You have that backwards, when they are running they talk to their base...once they are elected they move to the center to govern.

Are you serious? You want thinking americans to look at the GOP/ Tea Clown Brigade of candidates for President as an alternative to Obama? Ok...You must be one of those that voted for Bush twice...am I right...HA HA. This country, that you say you put first, would be destroyed in no time flat.

Puh-Leeaze. I can't tell you how silly that sounds. President Obama has spent the 1st 3 years of his administration CLEANING UP THE MESS LEFT BY THE LAST GOP/ PRESIDENT,,,Dubya! He took over with the economy on the brink of a 2nd depression.....Oh wait, I know I know, the Knuckle Dragging, cretins from the GOP/Tea Potty brainless misfacts squad would say that never happened.

Where do you people come up with such idiocy. If just once, Just Once, you guys acknowledged the mess that Obama inherited, you might make a shred of sense. But you guys wouldn't even admit the sun comes up in the east, let alone acknowledge that this President has accomplished a great deal during THE MOST DIFFICULT TIMES OF THIS COUNTRY SINCE 1940. Now, argue against what I said intelligently...I'd bet you can't

Obama should push for NASA to go to work on creating and developing reliable effective renewable energy forms for use right here in the U.S. that will get us off oil..like Solar, Heat flow electric generators, Algae production..generating pure hydrogen..blending pure hydrogen with CO2 from our Natural Gas and Coal power plants...these could be used in some way on long space trips or on the Moon or Mars..Put those scientist back to work helping solve real problems for our country, and that also would help in future space missions..

Obama should just read from the FBI files and start telling the World all the dirt they have on our wonderful Congress members...like reading from Newt's ethics investigation...who had been with D.C. hookers and which members of Congress have ties to organized crime lords..I mean the Big Oil boys and Wall Street Hedge Funds...

Wondering where are you on the appeasement drivel from the GOP/Tea Potty spin? This president has wiped out more terrorists than all of his predecessors. I laugh so hard at your idiot party trying to discount this president's record of protecting this country...while singing himself right into history as this country's best president.

I can guarantee you, this president is doing his job...ask Osama or Ghaddafi, as they line up to receive their quotient of virgins in the hereafter. Don't hate Obama, just speak to the facts in the sphere of reality and you won't sound like a troll that lives in a basement under a huge rock.

To Tom Clement and others: According to the Vancouver Sun for 1/19/12 Trans Canada is planning to build the first phase of the Keystone pipeline by starting at the Valero Refinery, Port Aurthur, Texas (international tax-free zone) and go north to Cushing, Oklahoma from there it would connect with the next stage pipeline coming south.
The whole idea is to transport Canadian tar-sands oil to the gulf to sell it U.S. tax free to the highest bidder.Which will be China.
Frankly, I don't think the Vancouver Sun is making where the final destination of the pipeline will be.

Mr. President what did you do the last three years? You have accomplished nothing. You made a priority your own family and close friends and provided them with everything that their hearts desired. You forgot the people that voted for you and the promisses of a better life and country. We are unemployed, live under a tight budget, hardly making it day by day, millions are homeless, the middle class fanmilies are almost exterminated, you have increased the national bedt almost 5 trillios in three years so what is your excuse now? Are you going to blame the prior administration still? You became a politician who are enjoying the good life and your wife is still not proud to be an american. You are the only president who do nbot salute the American Flag after three years of being athe poresident. Give us a break!

    @tim12
Try reading the Constitution before posting. The President is required to give an annual address.
Article 11, Section 3, Clause 1 of the Constitution. "The President shall from time to time giver to the Congress information on the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient."
From 1790 to 1934 it was known as the Annual Address
From 1942 to 1946 it was informally called the State of the Union.
From 1947 to today it has been called the State of the Union address.
