Biden dishes on bin Laden decision

The mission to get Osama bin Laden seems to be the raid that keeps on giving for the Obama White House. Whether it is a mention at the top and bottom of the State of the Union address or a highlight in a campaign speech, the president frequently references to the mission as evidence of the his leadership and foreign policy strength.

Vice President Joe Biden jumped on the Obama leadership bandwagon Friday when he revealed that he cautioned the president against signing off on the raid on Osama bin Laden's hideaway. Despite his reservations, Biden said the President made the gutsy decision all alone.

Speaking to a meeting of congressional Democrats in Maryland, Biden shared a few new details about the tense decision making process preceding the president giving the go ahead for the daring Pakistan raid by Special Operations forces.

at the time obama was faced with the birth cert dilemma ...he needed a media splash. And the same for his state of the union...those Seals come in handy don"t they. Like to see how Americans would feel if another country did a hit here like obama did....

      @ jerry exlax,
Please change your screen name to what I have above....its more appropriate for someone this just full of "IT"...

Pakistan is a sovereign nation, they have about 40 nuclear warheads, Bin Laden's lived about 2 miles for their equivalent of Annapolis, the mission was never disclosed to the Pakistani prime minister.....IT WAS A HUGE RISK YOU IDIOT ! But all patriotic americans that actually love this country wanted that monster brought to bare for his crimes against this country. President Obama made the decision to do just that.

Idiots like you give morons a bad name

@jerryexlax Trace has it right...since the president has never had a birth certificate problem. The only ones with the problem were the those too ignorant to believe facts. Those members of the KKK that would rather believe a bunch of made up lies...like idiot/moron you.

        January 28, 2012 at 3:08 pm |
      • jerrylax

obama's birth cert is still a problem.... it is a phony as it can get. This guy is a concocted persona from his fat head to his tippy toes. Total empty suit and the results of his presidency prove it.

        @jerrylax

Obama campaigned against Hillary, whose husband is an ex-president, Also, Obama campaigned against John McCain in the general and beat them both. Now let's think logically here; Hillary, through her husband Bill would have the connections to find out if Obama's birth certificate was real or not. Ex-President's have access to top secret information as well as the FBI database. Ex-president's know if Roswell is real or not, who really killed JFK, the Watergate tapes...and the list goes on and on. John McCain's entire lineage was in the Navy...admirals and commanders. Do you really think people with this type of access to information, couldn't figure out if Obama's Birth Certificate was legitimate and people like you know better????

So why should we believe you are anything but a delusional idiot to think that you know better? How do you have access to information that people (Ex-presidents, and Navy admirals) with top secret clearances do not have? Both Hillary and McCain would have loved nothing better than to have beaten Barack Obama for the presidency. Answer those questions.. Otherwise the IDIOT label is 100% accurate.

jerry-lax, there's that idiot thing coming up again. I think "texasgreenacres" just tried to give some words of wisdom. Navy Seals don't serve a political agenda. They do their jobs as assigned. And whether you know it or not, Bin Laden needed to be brought to justice...Only IDIOTS like you would disagree with that.

Point taken....At the cost of Trillions and billions, thousands dead, thousands wounded, sending in the troops for years ongoing to support the war profiteers ....it is much cheaper and more efficient to send in Seal Team 6.

Obviously, that notion is lost on jerryexlax.

      • jerrylax

yes send the team in to murder people in sovereign countries...as you please for political gain.. for power. If President Bush did this you would be all over it... you two faced -–!

      • jean2009

@jerryexlax.....If George W. Bush had sent in Seal Team 6 to do in bin Laden I would have been cheering with the rest of America. But truth is Bush didn't do that....instead he sent a great many troops into Iraq and into harms way where bin Laden had never been.

As for Bush/Cheney...Cheney and Spiro Agnew, Aaron Burr, Dan Quayle,-now that is a list of our worst VP's. However currently 23% of people chose Cheney as the worst.

I still wonder if you are an American since I guarantee you there is no leftist media or Maxist machine...only those created of your own delusional state..

According to the intelligence authorities in the United States and the Philippines, the September 11 attacks originated with Operation Bojinka (a plan that was not executed), which was conceived by Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (K.S.M) and his nephew, Ramzi Yousef. The first stage would be the assassination of Pope John Paul II, and the bombing of twelve airliners. The second and third stages called for small airplanes loaded with explosives to be crashed into the CIA headquarters. The plot was discovered by Manila police on January 6, 1995 and Abdul Hakim Murad was arrested. Ramzi Yousef was arrested in Pakistan in February 1995. Wali Khan Amin Shah escaped after his arrest, but was re-arrested in Malaysia in December 1995. Khalid Sheik Mohammed escaped, and Riduan Isamuddin, also known as Hambali, was overlooked.

In December 1998, the Director of Central Intelligence Counterterrorist Center reported to the president that Al-Qaeda was preparing for attacks in the USA, including the training of personnel to hijack aircraf

Ali Abdul Saoud Mohamed, is a double agent[1] who worked for both the CIA and Egyptian Islamic Jihad simultaneously, reporting on the workings of each for the benefit of the other.

Mohamed was a major in the Egyptian army's military intelligence unit, until being discharged for suspected fundamentalism in 1984. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and used U.S. military information to train al-Qaeda and other Muslim militants, and write al-Qaeda's multivolume terrorist training guideAccording to Cooperative Research, Mohamed was a Drill sergeant at Fort Bragg, and was hired to teach courses on Arabic culture at the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School.

In 1988 Mohamed informed his superior officers in the U.S. Army that he was taking some leave time to fight Soviets in Afghanistan. "A month later, he returned, boasting that he had killed two Soviet soldiers and giving away as souvenirs what he claimed were their uniform belts."

Mohamed's commanding officer, Lt. Col. Robert Anderson, said he wrote detailed reports aimed at getting Army intelligence to investigate Mohamed — and have him court-martialed — but the reports were ignored.

n the early 1990s Mohamed returned to Afghanistan, where "he trained the first al-Qaeda volunteers in techniques of unconventional warfare including kidnappings, assassinations, and hijacking planes, which he had learned from the American Special Forces." According to FBI special agent Jack Cloonan, in one of Mohamed's first classes were Osama bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri, and other al-Qaeda leaders

Thank you....we have so many right-wing nuts on here bemoaning the fact that there was a recent Asia-Pacific Conference which would take our attention off the conflicts in Africa and the Middle East. When in actuality 9/11 originated and was planned within the Asian Muslim al-Qaeda groups in Pacific Asia. A location which is home to 80% of the world's Muslim population. They forget, or don't know, that one of the reasons the World Trade Towers were selected as an 9/11 target was not only the impact on trade; but because they were taller than the Petronas Towers in Malaysia.

      Dan,
Per the record, 0bama was NOT the one to say let's send in Seal Team 6 (or any other Seal team). It was brought to him and it took him 16 hours to agree with the military commanders that saying "OK" was the best decision. None of the actual actions in either Iraq or Afghanistan are different than those that were in place for years before him. I am so glad 0bama said OK, and bin Laden is no longer breathing air. If this would have happened the last year of Bush's term all we would hear from the left is it is either fake or set-up. But keep trying to take FULL credit for it, so far only the far left actually believe you.

I like a president who is deliberate and not an impulsive shoot from the hip guy. He takes time to look at proposals, asks questions, and thinks through actions before making a final decision that sends our troops into harms way. Definitely that is not a flaw but rather a person with well-grounded wisdom.

Here Biden opens his big mouth..to apparently distract us from the problems we face today and the failure of this presidency. However, biden is not too smart, as mangy of us know. It was panetta (CIA director, obama selection, and former clinton lackey) who was the only person agreeing to get bin laden (preferably not-alive, kinda like the Lybian leader). However, there are consequences to doing things like this...like nuke war and other very serious consequences...but Barry needed a distraction (from the pressure of producing another flimsy birth certificate)...he also needed one around the state of the union speech...and rolled out the seal team six to rescue a religious zealot and other nut case in Africa...oh my. God help us.

You have been duped by the marxist machine and the leftist media on Bush and Cheney...history will eventually show the real facts...as it is doing with prior presidents..JFK for instance, a crafted persona like obama..but a flawed poor leader...once thought to be the best president we ever had...hahaha.

similar to what jean2009 asked, what planet to do you come from? Cheney will go down in history as the worst VP in the history of this nation. Don't agree huh? Cheney's popularity amongst real americans, not vapid knuckle draggers like you is about 11%...I'm guessing of course, but it could be lower. Let's replay only a couple of his stupid statements and actions while in office: 1) the insurgency is in its last throws; some 2000 american lives lost, and well over a trillion dollars later, the U.S. leaves Iraq in 2011 2) Deficits don't matter....That Stupid Statement speaks for itself 3) Stupid Action: It was proven in court that Scooter Libby as the assistant to the VP, outed a CIA agent, which IS an act of treason

Now jerry, that you've proven yourself to be a complete dunce, remind us all again how Bush and Cheney are just targets of a left leaning marxist machine, only reporting the facts of their failures. Its amazing how truly delusional you are.

Every reasonable person in America must consider this fact. Each time President Obama works alone (makes excercutive decision) He has been sucessful. Compare his excecutive decision record to anything to be done in conjucntion with the Republican Congress. Desaster. They will do whatever it takes to fail his presindency, even if it means collapsing America's economy. God protect Obama and Amirica as a nation by rooting out poeple like Jerry.

History will show the Bush/Cheney years as one the killed thousands of innocent people, killed thousands of American soldiers on a worthless war, an economic doctrine that nearly destroyed the economy and was an ultimate failure... The only reason no real conservatives are running this election is because they know the Bush/Cheney years are still in the memories of the vast majority of Americans and they won't vote Republican in fear of those policies resurfacing which will ultimately destroy the American way of life... Anyone who calls the killing of Osama Bin Laden (Friend of the Bush Family) a misuse of the special forces must hate America and wanted Osama to remain alive to plan future attacks against the USA... Jerrylax, why do you hate America so much and why do you love Terrorists who attack and kill innocent Americans? Combat vet my behind!!!

Couldn’t be prouder of the Seals that were involved in the strategic take down of Bin Laden. Disappointed in the President for not only trying to take some credit that, I’m sorry but signing a piece of paper doesn’t give you right to and going on air within hours to tell the world, including the other Al Qaeda members watching, that not only did we take out your leader but we have all these documents and computers of yours, that is basically now useless information because they know we have it. Yes I think it’s important that the American people know but what are a few weeks. Had he not been so foolish and wanting to increase his numbers, like he really had anything to do with it, the information gathered would have probably helped to take out much more than one piece of a very large organization.

Every use of the SEALS carries with it a risk of failure, which could cost us some of our most valuable military assets. For that reason, it is legitimate to question the Obama administration's reliance on this force for an ever-increasing number of missions. At the same time, the success rate, atleast among the publicized missions, has been amazing. Furthermore, the cost is far lower than the alternatives – either a mission with a much larger footprint, and likely high casualties on both sides at great financial cost, or a failure to pursue a key mission, where such failure impairs not only the worlds view of America, but also our key security interests.
Given the results that we have seen, and with no evidence of a large number of failed or high casualty missions, the known facts tend to indicate that the uses of the SEALS thus far by this adminstration have been good calls. We should be careful not to overrely on SEAL teams and use them for problems for which they are not well suited, but when people argue against U.S. casualty-free missions where American citizens are freed from kidnappers and pirates, and malevolent terrorists that have killed massive numbers of American citizens and continue to plot against us are destroyed they sound like nutcases. This is especially true when the intel gathered from these operations has lead to the large scale dismantling of the leadership of several terrorist networks.
We should continue to question how best to move forward. But to argue that complete successes were a bad thing is a mark of a complete lack of reasoning.

Yes, Yes it does Now, Doesn't it.

Tell it long enough and they will believe!
The point of a political speech is to persuade people of what we think right.
This and similar lines in Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf about what he claimed to be a strategem of Jewish lies using "the principle & which is quite true in itself & that in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily,"

The mission was to bring this killer to justice and pay for his crimes against (presumably) your fellow americans...unless you are german with all the Adolf Hitler references.

The president sworn to protect and defend this country against ALL enemies, foreign and domestic. How is this not his job to do exactly that when taking out this murderer? For heavens sake, OBL was living in a mansion, watching cable tv with his entourage of wives/concubines when he got his ticket punched for the hereafter.
