Administration official denies president made mistake revealing U.S. drone strikes in Pakistan

A senior administration official is denying to CNN that President Obama made a mistake in publicly revealing what had been classified information about U.S. drone strikes in Pakistan.

Asked whether it was a mistake or part of some larger strategy, the official said the president’s on the record admission on drones during a Google + video chat Monday, was “neither a slip up or a secret message to the Pakistanis”

The president on Monday said that "a lot of these strikes have been in the FATA, and going after al Qaeda suspects who are up in very tough terrain on the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. For us to be able to get them in another way would involve probably a lot more intrusive military actions than the one we're already engaging in." (FATA being the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan where Al Qaeda and many Taliban are ensconced).

The official downplayed the significance of what happened, pointing out that what the president said was widely known. The president, the official said was making the point that the drone missions are “precise” and “targeted to avoid casualties.”

On continued tensions between the U.S. and Iran, the same senior administration official said “we want this to end diplomatically.” “Iran just needs to seize this opportunity” and agree to compromises as part of the international talks to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

Today, Republicans complained that Obama was divulging states secrets and should be tried for treason. They claimed Obama's action makes it very difficult to hunt down and kill terrorists like Osama Bin Laden, and then they paused and said, "oops".

Insisting on due process for terrorist fighters residing in foreign countries with no extradition treaties and no effective local police force is basically granting these folks complete immunity. If you want to fight this battle, take it to the southern prisons where black folks are serving life sentences for crimes they didn't commit. Don't waste your time protecting scum like Al-Awlaki.

sharky is correct...obama ordered the extra-judicial killings of two american citizens without due process. if any of you who challenge sharky's suggestion that bo be tried, then i encourage you to find where, exactly, the constitution gives the pres this authority. if, on the other hand, you feel that the constitution only covers some us citizens and only under certain circumstances, then i encourage you to jump on the slippery slope that leads to despotism and willingly surrender your basic rights.

Obama and his self serving propagandists have succeeded in poisoning the reputations of many, in their efforts to eliminate all who oppose him. They would be unable to succeed in their evil, ugly efforts, if not for the blind and stupid complicity of the biased main stream media, and stooges, like the bloggers here, who always demonize his detractors, no matter how true their accusations. Obama is a thin skinned egomaniac, who gets worse, with each measure of additional power he gains.

Actually, Sharky, you nitwit, I do know the Constitution of the United States. Forward and backward, in fact. I will not presume you know nothing about it, since I do not know you, even though most people who leap like puppies drooling about it and accusing everyone else of ignorance-are in fact ignorant of it themselves. What is provable here is this:whether or not you have ever read or understood anything of the U.S. Constitution, you are a nitwit.

        Sharky,

As a former Military Investigator, you need to understand. During time of War “only” the President has the authority to order an execution (War-Powers Act). Sorry that is how it is. If the subject has been declared (with legal advice) an Enemy-Combatant, then he has fortified his Constitutional rights. You are correct “No one is above the Law” as “No-one is beneath the law”.

Only politically motivated bloggers, cronies, and perhaps ignorant "college interns" can differentiate between Bush, Cheney, and Obama's treachery. Sharky is 100% correct. Anyone who disagrees with Sharky's statement clearly has absolutely no understanding, or simply does not support, the law of our land.

The assassination of a US citizen was against all principles that the US supposedly stands for. By supporting such action, you are saying that is then acceptable for the US government to determine who is an "Enemy of the State" and then proceed to kill that person, without any public oversight or due process. By supporting such action you have given away all of your own rights and thrown away the constitution completely. By supporting such action, you have said that it is completely acceptable for the US government to assassinate any one of us here, if they deem our actions or words as traitorous. Is that really the path you think we should be going down? A lot of other countries have gone down that path in history, and it is has never ended well. It may not happen tomorrow, or the next day, but you can bet that it will certainly happen one day...if you give up those basic rights so easily.

Also, for those are asking about what Sharky is speaking of – He is talking about the assassination of Anwar al-Awlaki, who was a US citizen that was killed in Yemen by a drone strike. The DOJ determined that he was involved in terrorist activities (which I'm not necessarily doubting), but when questioned on the evidence, the DOJ stated that they were state secrets. No charges were ever broght up in court against him at any time.

I am not saying that he shouldn't have been dealt with, I am not disputing that at all. All I am disputing is the fact that a government agency can sit behind closed doors and determine, on it's own accord, whether a US citizen should be killed without any court order, charges, or indictment.

      • wowzer

I have no sympathy for Al-Awaki, yes he was a US Citizen but he was a terriorsit who wanted to kill innocent Americans. If you think this sends a bad message than you are stupid. The only message that is sent if dont want to be blown up by a drone, than all you have to do is not be a terrorist...SUCKS AL-AWAKI, MABYE YOU SHOULDNT HAVE BEEN A TERRORIST.

People were asking for precision strikes rather than war, so they start doing precision strikes and people start complaining about that. A scalpel is best when dealing with terrorists, rather than filling a country up with troops which is utterly pointless, costly, and risky.
Ultimately I would prefer to see a full disengagement from the Middle East, I think that is the best solution. A war which cannot be won is a fruitless enterprise.

For all of you deciding to attack me, due to your utterly short minded and completely ignorant process of our own justice system not to mention the very thing that even creates the whole country our US Constitution, executing US citizens without due process is highly egregious.

I do not care if they were terrorists or not, they are US citizens. You've just now, with your complete foolishness and ignorant complacency allowed any President's secret committee place any US citizen on the hit list to then be killed without facts, without details, made public, without any information at all except what is kept secret. You've given the green light to the President to kill US citizens without any sort of trial, without any sort of due process which is granted to ALL US citizens regardless of their actions. You've just now allowed the President and this secret committee to basically say any US citizen is a terrorist, without the public having any knowledge at all, and then that person can be killed without facing any sort of actual justice system thus violating that person's rights.

I bet you all are the same people that screamed and ranted and yelled at Bush demanding the Gitmo terrorists have a fair trial and a trial for that matter because of what is said in the US Constitution and to allow them to have that right. Those people were not US citizens, but they were terrorists. Yet you wanted them to have a trial and not just be ceremoniously executed without any due process at all. Amazing you now say it is all right for US Citizens yes US citizens to NOT have the same rights and to be executed without due process. You are granting that power to every single president that will sit in that oval office.

Obama had Anwar Al-Awlaki, Samir Khan, and Al-Awlaki's 16 year old son executed. Samir Khan was with Al-Awlaki and yet Obama actually offered condolences to the Khan family as he was apparently not on the hit list, YET he was still killed. Al-Awlaki's son was NOT on the hit list, but he was still killed. The Fort Hood terrorist, to which the Obama admin called "Workplace Violence" and not even terrorism, is still alive, he is a US citizen, and supposedly "trained" by Al-Awlaki yet he was afforded his rights, BUT semantics in that oh no no we cannot call him a terrorist, no not at all. The underwear bomber also apparently another of Al-Awlaki's minions is also still alive and awaiting trial or has had trial, yet he was given the rights. He is not a US Citizen, but the 3 I named WERE US Citizens and were killed by drone strikes that Obama greenlighted.

Congrats you absolutely nonsensical people who have absolutely no idea at all about the US Constitution, the law, or the dangerous precedence all of this has set.

Good grief, we use aircraft, drones, ships, tanks, submarines, humans, etc. to kill the enemy. So what does it matter which form of killing is used? It's warfare people ... You can't have wars without collateral damage. Even when intelligence is as good as it can be, there will always be civilian deaths and occasionally death from :"friendly fire". War is a messy, chaotic, violent thing that can't be packaged up nice and neat and delivered to the enemy like a FedEx package.

Want to end war? Then end war.

Then have a trial... Yeah K, that should be an easy choice. Personally, I will back Obama on this one. Things are never black and white. It is almost always in the grey. Hats off to President Obama.

Sharky, you cannot give credit where credit is due, can you. President Obama may have by-passed due process, but even you must admit that the American traitor got his "Due"?

      • sgtmac31

Sharky what would be different if a soldier would have killed the traitor of an American? Would you want the Soldier to be on trial for Murder? I don't agree with what Obama is doing but I would have done the same thing. Soon as you turn against America, you are the enemy and should be treated like one

        January 31, 2012 at 4:36 pm |
      • ThaGerm

Sharky, you really are the one who doesn't understand how to apply the constitution. You see, Bush Cheney labeled terrorists "enemy combatants" and as such you afforded NO PROTECTION under our constitution. You fail to understand that even a US citizen that commits treason by becoming an enemy combatant can be shot on the field of battle "remember Bush, Cheney defined the field of battle in terrorism as wherever terrorist are committing acts of terror". So if you really, really want to be mad, you have to be mad at Bush on this one since HE is the one who gave Obama the power. True dat my son.

      • Bobby

You are correct Sharky, but don't expect inept fools on either side to understand this issue. For the left, it's perfectly fine because it's a Democrat ordering this, they don't care about the laws, they don't care about due process, they don't care that there was no active combat situation, they don't care that there was no trial, they don't care that there was court review, they don't care that they were the ones crying about Bush years ago when he decided certain people should be afforded no due process, they don't care about any of it. All they care about is that they can paint their Democratic candidate in a good light. They're hypocrites through and through.

As for the right, they don't care because they support such actions. It's just tough to give Obama credit, so they'll give credit to the intelligence or whatever other nonsense. Things Democrats said about them before, about how they were shredding the constitution were true. The reality is both sides are shredding it.

It's cool though, I can't wait for the next Republican president to be some scumbag who arbitrarily decides to exectue a bunch of scummy Democrats as terrorists with no due process, then I can spit in their faces about how they didn't care when Obummer did it.

        January 31, 2012 at 4:45 pm |
      • GetOffThePhone

Its comments like these that make me realize why we are losing our battle against terrorism.

You people do realize that the goals of these terrorists are to destroy our way of life? What better way to do so, then to make people fearful...so fearful that they give up their own basic freedoms and rights? It's those freedoms and rights that create our way of life here in America. Each right that we blindly give away, is a battle that the terrorists have won.

...and don't even try to come in and say that they aren't winning. We are beginning talks with the Taliban, which is a total justification of their actions and complete solidification that they are being recognized as some sort of political organization. If that isn't a blatant sign of our loss in this thing…then I don't know what is.

Al-Awlaki wasn't a US citizen anymore than the 9/11 hijackers were citizens. That sonuvabitch sponsored the English language "Inspire" magazine for terrorists, with titles such as "How to make a bomb in the kitchen of your mom". That F***er needed to go and i'm sick and tired of people trying to hide him behind US Citizenship, you know why they have body scans at the airports now? because Awlaki told that underwear bomber to stuff the explosives next to his junk on top of that Fort Hood shooter. Sharky is correct. Some of you still agree with what Obama did, but those of you trying to say it is Constitutional are off your rocker. There should have been a trial or SOME type of public vetting to go after this person, not just some extra judicial killing ordered by the President. And for the "former military investigator" who said that only the President can order executions in a time of war – please tell me, what theater of war was Awlawki in? What declaration of War had Congress made to place us in said time of war?

I voted for Obama and sadly will probably vote for him again looking at what the current GOP field is putting up. But that act, and the further legislation allowing more of it, is plain wrong. It was wrong when Bush locked up the "dirty bomber", who was a US citizen, without a trial, and it is wrong that Obama is out killing US Citizens overseas without trial.

        @sharky
As an American citizen, the president had and currently has my okay to take out Al-Awlaki or any other terrorist ilk like him. As far as I'm concerned Al-Awlaki null and voided his American citizenship the moment he plotted, preached, and/or instructed others to kill our citizens.

Congress passed the Authorization of the Use of Military Force Act of 2002 against those terrorist who plot, plan or instigate attacks against the United States here and abroad, and it was signed by George W. Bush -September 18, 2001.

The following is the wording of the legislation:

"Begun and held at the City of Washington on Wednesday, the third day of January, two thousand and one,

        Joint Resolution:

To authorize the use of United States Armed Forces against those responsible for the recent attacks launched against the United States.

Whereas, on September 11, 2001, acts of treacherous violence were committed against the United States and its citizens; and

Whereas, such acts render it both necessary and appropriate that the United States exercise its rights to self-defense and to protect United States citizens both at home and abroad; and

Whereas, in light of the threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States posed by these grave acts of violence; and

Whereas, such acts continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States; and

Whereas, the President has authority under the Constitution to take action to deter and prevent acts of international terrorism against the United States: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

        Section 1 – Short Title

This joint resolution may be cited as the 'Authorization for Use of Military Force'.
[edit] Section 2 – Authorization For Use of United States Armed Forces

        (a) IN GENERAL- That the President is authorized to use all necessary and appropriate force against those nations, organizations, or persons he determines planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, or harbored such organizations or persons, in order to prevent any future acts of international terrorism against the United States by such nations, organizations or persons.

        (b) War Powers Resolution Requirements-

        (1) SPECIFIC STATUTORY AUTHORIZATION- Consistent with section 8(a)(1) of the War Powers Resolution, the Congress declares that this section is intended to constitute specific statutory authorization within the meaning of section 5(b) of the War Powers Resolution.

        (2) APPLICABILITY OF OTHER REQUIREMENTS- Nothing in this resolution supersedes any requirement of the War Powers Resolution. "
Speaker of the House of Representatives
Vice President of the United States and
        President of the Senate.

I think we all know that if a citizen of the United States had joined the SS during WWII they would have been fair game.

If you don't like the above act which gave the President constitutional authority to protect our citizens then complain to your congressman..... but in my opinion when you do you are not a loyal American.

Some 8,000 to 10,000, German American US citizens and Japanese Ameircan US citizens left the US to fight in those respective armed forces during World War Two. We killed close to a thousand with no due process. We imprisoned a couple thousand more with no due process in POW camps. You are not entitled to due process when active in an enity in conflict with the US. You are subject to deadly force, anywhere at any time, and if yo surrender you are a enemy combatant with no right to habeus.. If not in uniform you are illegal combatant also with no US rights

      • Bill

Any of you dolts bashing Sharky have no --ing clue about the world. Or perhaps you found the spot in the Constitution's 5th Amendment that says "except overseas"??

        Here, let me share something:
" First they came for the communists,
        and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
        and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
        and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn't speak out because I was Protestant.

        Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.
        "

Anwar Al-Awlaki was a US Citizen deserving of every right afforded him by the Constitution no matter what he is SUSPECTED of doing. It does not make exceptions "Whenever the President decides".

So in America we replace the first stanza with "terrorist" instead of communist and what do you get? Same ending.

This is funny. Sharkys concept (despite his original trolling comment) is 100% correct and he is receiving so much grief and people are falsely justifying the decision that the POTUS made. Ask yourself the questions below and see if you have the same position...

        1. If Bush did this, would you think differently?
        2. Would you feel differently if this was on domestic soil? For example, some guy making c4 in his garage – should he be arrested and tried or should we just blow him up?
        3. Do you trust the system to be judge, jury and executioner? How you would feel if a loved one (or yourself) was on the pointy end of that stick?
        4. Do you want to set an example for your rights to be violated as they see fit? Do you trust them to amend your constitutional rights without notice?

I think we can all agree that Al-Awlaki deserved to die, however its our elected officials responsibilities to abide by the constitutional rights of each individual citizen.

Socialist?? There is nothing socialist about this president or any president we have had. I love how most people in this country have NO IDEA what Socialism or a Socialist is and yet they listen to Republican scare tactics...accusing our president of socialism. Just because we have "social programs" in this country does not mean we are a socialistic society. If you don't like it, then don't use Medicare for anyone in your family, don't use social security, don't receive mail from your mailman, if your house in on fire please don't call the fire department, put it out yourself. Don't call the police in case of an emergency either...take care of it yourself and then let the justice system decide whether your actions were justified or not....these are just a few "social programs" that I assume you are talking about...how dare we elect a "Socialist" president who wants to spend money on social programs...hahaha. Our government was created in such a way to resist change so that in the event of a catastrophe in the United States, the government would remain stable. That is perhaps why things seem to move very slow within government. That is also why even if we had a true socialist president with a true socialist agenda, it would not go very far...so it is a very irrational fear to fear a socialist president because 1.) by definition he is not really a true socialist and 2.) Even if he were, his ideas would not get very far because of the way our government is set up. We are a capitalist country and will remain as such...the only thing we are trying to do is make the game of capitalism more equitable for everyone. That is not socialism, it is called being American and allowing everyone the opportunity to prosper.

      • Mike

So none of you would call Obama's desire to take over the health care system, currently a free-market enterprise, as Socialistic? Seriously? How about his taking over of college student loans?
Doesn't matter what the industry is, if the government tries to take over ANY industry for the collective good of the whole, to the detriment of the Capitalistic approach, that is BY DEFINITION a Socialistic approach.
Socialism uses as its advantage the absence of competition to gain an upper hand and put Capitalistic ventures out of business. They do this by taking over entire industries, like health care.
When the goverment dictates rules, regulations, and pricing that forces companies out of business and then subsequently takes over the industry they are again, BY DEFINITION, a Socialistic government.
Not saying Obama has done this much but that is only due in part to, and thank God for this, having more than just the Democrats run the show. If they were then Socialism is what you'd have.
Maybe some of you really need to stop calling others names, insinuating they don't know what real Socialism is and are simply zombies to the Fox News channel.
Maybe you should turn off your MSNBC and actually watch Fox News once in a while. Might do you some good.

As has been pointed out, if you attended a public school, then by the GOP/your definition, you grew up in a socialist household. So you might want to impeach your parents and hold a democratic election for replacements. Based on your post and apparent level of education, be prepared that your applicants might be a bit, well, scary.

        January 31, 2012 at 3:26 pm |

The litany of Obama being a socialist has grown stale....largely because its not true.
I respectfully suggest to you that you consider a new source of news for you and also avoid news radio or atleast the opinion shows like Rush Limbaugh and read some actual news stories instead to form your own opinion instead.

The socialist remarks are about the redistributed the wealth; taking one citizens money and giving it to another. Whether you agree with it or not is a different argument. But, it by no means refers to the fire department, Brian.

If Obama is a socialist then the ones on the far right are absolutely fascist.

You wont see many of them willing to hold themselves to the same standars they hold others too though, Hypocrisy is one of the other cornerstones of todays GOP. The party my Grandfather tought me of and supported is long long gone.....

@Jimbo...the fire department is a socialistic program. We pay for it through our taxes. So when you use the word Socialism, it is all-encompassing. We should allow the fire departments to compete in a free trade capitalistic market. The fire departments, police departments, abulances, etc... should all compete in the private sector and when we use these services, we should get a bill for it. So yes, Jimbo, Socialism has something to do with the fire department. In regards to the health care overhaul, Obama just handed down a bonanza to private health-insurance companies by requiring ALL citizens to purchase health care from these PRIVATE companies. I would like to see anyone, Democrat or Republican, to now tell big business in the health care industry that they are going to take a way their newly mandated customers. It will be a wedge issue, but it will never be repealed. Just so you know, I am ok with it if it is repealed...but if the mandate is found to be unconstitutional, then I want the right to NOT purchase car insurance either.

"Socialism" isn't, unless carried to extremes, some kind of evil force waiting to destroy America. "Socialism" was a phrase used a lot in the early 20th century by those that did not want to see the end the monopolies that were destroying America. Pure Capitalism is, as any extreme, a tremendously evil force, for it acknowledges no ethics except the bottom line. Moderate Socialism can be a very good thing, especially if you are coming from a Christian background. Look up the second chapter of Acts.

We can count Mike as yet another ignoramous with no idea of what the word "socialist" actually means.

Obama is a slightly right-of-center centrist. His ideological positions are virtually identical to the moderate wing of the REPUBLICAN PARTY as it was about 15 years ago. There is no left wing in the US political spectrum, and there never has been.

Brian, There are many definitiona of socialism; As a political movement, socialism includes a diverse array of political philosophies, ranging from reformism to revolutionary socialism. Proponents of state socialism advocate for the nationalisation of the means of production, distribution and exchange as a strategy for implementing socialism. Social democrats advocate redistributive taxation in the form of social welfare and government regulation of capital within the framework of a market economy.

What do you call it when the federal government buys the majority of shares of a US corporation?

No one said Oberry is a true socialist, he is a part socialist and has said many times how he is.

You assume way too much. Are we a socialistic society, NO, Not Yet. Everyday we just move 1 step closer though, thanks to Wilson, Johnson and Oberry

Brian – In case you hadn't heard, Social Security was never intended to be a stinking "social program." We were promised that only those who paid into Social Security would be allowed to take benefits from it. Then, along came those SOCIALISTS (no other word fits) Democraps who completely made a liar out of FDR and all other politicians who intended to use Social Security properly. It WAS Democraps, you know, who first started stealing the Social Security money and using it for SOCIALIST programs.

You probably don't know this, but in 1940, the Socialist Party closed it's doors. The reason they gave for closing up? The Socialist Part;y was no longer needed because "the Democrat Party of the United States has adopted every one of our policies and tenets." How dare you say that Barak Hussein Obama is not a Socialist? If you believe that you are as naive as a two year old child!

        @Mike
The President is not taking over the health care system. Your purchasing health insurance will remain a purchase from a privately owned insurance company. The only thing that will change is: A:) they will not be allowed to deny you coverage and B:) they will not be allowed to dump you once you become ill.

        Young people are such idiots:

Do you actually think seniors on Social Security do not buy health insurance? The only part of Social Security Medicare that is pre-cost covered by the federal government is Part A. Medicare. That was pre-paid by working and the FICA tax paid during your working years. Part B is an insurance premium of $99.30 per month deducted from the monthly SS check. Part D drug benefit is another $36.50 taken from my monthly SS check and paid to United Health Care Insurance for prescription drug coverage.

Add to that a secondary private insurer is needed to pay for the 20% Medicare doesn't cover for medical expense. Then there are the out of pocket Medicare deductible at the first of each year which the secondary insurance will not cover because the primary did not cover it, and the co-pay out of pocket expenses for drug purchases.

Do you realize that the paperwork for Medicare is processed by private insurance companies who sub-contract work from the federal government?

So pray tell...how is that socialized? It isn't.

Howard suffers from what is called the "Fallacy of Exceptionalism." It's well known that very intelligent people, who are well-read on a subject, are often unsure of their conclusions, for they know how complex a situation may be. Those that are not as intelligent, or not as knowledgeable, tend to cling to a few well-worn arguments, and seem unable to acknowledge that they may be wrong. It's pointless to engage in debate with such. They do not listen, and instead rush to justify their position.

Cheney ordered us to stop looking for his buddy bin Laden, and there it ended. Obama did the people's work and had him tracked down and killed. I know it hurts some of you conservatives who are also loyal Americans, but Cheney and Bush didn't mind 9-11 at all, and they were in no hurry to prevent another one.

Obama shoudl be arrested for killing a member of the Saudi Royal family. If one guy gets away with killing family members of our masters, where will it end? Nip, it, nip it in the bud. If Americans actually have a President that protects America, it could be disaster for the wealty and foreign companies.

Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. Now just what part of this would be violated. Certainly not levying war, and for the life of me I can't see how it provide aid or comfort. Pakistan knows who is doing the drone attacks, the profit none by the statement. Acting on the info from an informer, Military Intelligence planned the raid that killed Obama, the superb SEALs executed the action.
What Obama did was give the nod for an illegal invasion of another country to assassinate a terrorist [who was also an US citizen] and therefore qualified for due process.

The citizens of the United States deserved to see this monster tried in public and punished for his monstrous crimes. THEN there would be closure.
Doing it in such a hole-in -the-corner way with allegations that it may or may not have been Bin L does not give closure. Sorry

What about invading a country, illegal wire tapping and torture of prisoners that Bush and Cheney carried out, besides all of the other laws both of them broke that we aren't even aware of? It's funny you are so quick to condemn this president and probably didn't care what W did. Sounds like maybe there is something else going on here...

The constitution is a little vague about due process for American citizens who have moved to another country and effectively renounced their citizenship. However if someone was stupid enough to bring that up in court I think it would be pretty obvious how it would go. Lucky for you we have freedom of speech so you can make silly accusations based on weak cases to your hearts content. However if you think you are making Obama look bad you are mistaken. You are just making yourself look like the fool that you are.

If they brought him home to be tried, the Republicans would be complaining about the way he would be tried – military tribunal vs. the court system. You know whatever decision Obama's administration made would be criticized. And then there is the possibility that he could go free. I think they thought this through and decided it was the best option. It's easy to criticize when you're not making the tough decisions.

It is remarkable how far the right is willing to go to attack this President. Bush and Cheney pushed through the Patriot Act, seriously impacting freedom and civil liberty in order to go after "The Terrorists"... They took us to the wrong country to start a war for their false reasons, when the guy that ordered the attack on American soil was clearly somewhere else. Not only does the President get this guy with ZERO American lives lost, but now the right attacks him for violating the civil liberties of American traitors who just happened to be participating in terrorist training and activities on Afghan and Pakistani soil when the drone took them out. If a Rebulican administration got Bin Laden the EXACT SAME WAY and a Democrat complained the way theses Republicans are they would call it treason.

MItch McConnell "Our first priority is to make Obama a one term President". The more they talk, the less Americans are going to listen. The big Republican "hitters" wanted no part of this election because they knew the could not win. Daniels, Christie, Palin and all of the others are just working together to make sure the country thinks Obama failed, and then create their chance.

How many czars and cronnies have been put in office without public consent or congressional approval?

Based on this comment you are a fool. He was supposed to start another war to get back a drone? Cheney's idea of dropping bombs in Iran was even more ludicrous than your statement was.

He didn't give away anything and to expect that Iran would have complied with any requests or orders anyways is insane. If we would have dropped bombs, sent people into Iran to retrieve or destroy or anything similar there would be another war, I am sure a story would be made up about us killing innocent people and overall we would have looked much worse than we already did by having the Drone there in the first place.

Except that the strikes, maybe precise, but still there have been civilian casualties. The drone attacks were small, very small compared to when Bush was in office. Obama has amped up the drone attacks and deaths have gone up dramatically. Looking at the ranges, though say going with the Max number killed, in 2008 the number was 314, in 2009 the max number went up to 725, and then up to 993 in 2010. The media has just done a nice job in reporting very very little about the secret war.

    • Jason

I hope you realize that casualty figures of drones strikes completely rely on the reporting from the local population around the strikes which almost always over inflate the numbers to spur anti-US sentiment. Most drone strikes are against people in moving vehicles on barren roads.

      January 31, 2012 at 1:07 pm |
      • sharky

LOL the strikes were given a range from min to max in terms of how many killed. I chose max. Obviously you actually have not looked anything up at all regarding the drone strikes. Just keep believing all is happy and dandy in your rose tinted world.

        January 31, 2012 at 1:14 pm |
      • binky

So you are positive that civilians don't travel on these roads at all?If you do a bit of research on drones, you'll find that these drones are not controlled by military;instead, they are under CIA chain of command. Agents from Virginia control them, and to attack, they don't need to go through lengthy process. All they require is get a permission from one higher up which only takes about couple of hour. As for inflating casualty figures, they are reports from NGOs. If you still adamant about siding with your government after these reports, I guess there is no cure for your willful ignorance.

        January 31, 2012 at 1:53 pm |

        January 31, 2012 at 1:54 pm |
      • patcee

What about the civilians killed when the drone completely missed its target? I don't believe the accounts are being magnified – I think there have been more deaths than we know. The people who live there have had too many demonstrations for it to be fiction. I agree with Obama's new way of fighting wars, assassinating leaders and zeroing in through the use of special forces – but letting drones fight like an army, indiscriminately, will make more enemies for us than friends. And enemies are recruits for the terrorists.

If they can't spin it to make Obama look good, they just don't report it. Especiallay NBR (National Biased Radio) which is supposed to be unbiased because it is paid for by ALL taxpayers – not just those who have the delusional, mistaken viewpoint of LIberal Democrats.

Want to speculate as to why the media has never mentioned the fact that before the U. S. invaded Iraq and got rid of Hussein (no, not Barak Hussein – the other Hussein) the hospitals had no medicines and many were just holding places where people went to die. Today, all the hospitals are well-supplied with medicines needed by children and chronically ill people. Nope, you'll NEVER see that mentioned in the Media, because it doesn't reflect the Media's overwhelming mantra of 'We Love Liberals – We Hate Conservatives."

Except we had an embargo on Iraq.....so, as embargoes against dictatorships work, the government in Iraq took the proceeds from anything they could and the local population got stiffed. We have had an embargo against cuba for over 40 years and that hasnt accomplished anything. But we didnt go into Iraq to free their people, that was a a secondary cause, we went in to get WMD's...which we didnt find. Al-queda werent active in Iraq at all until we got there. It's fn ridiculous this hate on Obama, is just sickening. GOP wants to say he is soft on terrorism...except look how many terrorists he's gotten on his watch. So they say he violates the constitution...where were you people when Bush was doing the same things? Thats right Bush is white and your Gods Beck and Limbaugh were touting him. Uh yeah, US military out of Iraq thanks to the SOFA agreement Bush made while still in Office, and Obama jacked up the military levels in Afghanistan in case you forgot. And now he sent 100 troops to Central Africa to go find a warlord.

*** The media has just done a nice job in reporting very very little about the secret war.

You mean the war thats all over the media and internet.
Maybe you spend too much time posting, and not enough time reading.

How much do you really know about the drone war? Aside from just of only getting the "bad guys." Did you even know about those numbers I put up? Did you know about the other drone attacks in other countries? Nope nope nope because the media won't report on these things to make Obama look bad. If Bush were doing this, the media would be all over it to make people scream and yell about how awful the drones are because they are killing civilians.

That is called double standards, in case you didn't know.

You must mean 'the US Armed Forces'. The only choice any Command in Chief really makes, is whether to allow the Commanders to do what they propose, or to obstruct them. Kudos for not obstructing, but really, I don't think you can paint him as a war hero because he said 'Ok then, make it so'.

I've been on this planet for over 50 years and NEVER have I seen such disrespect for the Office of the President and the President himself. Attitudes and statements such as yours never lead to anything positive or helpful. They are an indication of the overall ego-centered rudeness of our citizens. What key indicators are you looking at. That's vague. Economically, all the key indicators are that we are better off, and you can't argue Obama's foreign policy successes. So I am at a loss to understand what you are referring to?

        January 31, 2012 at 1:25 pm |
      • Scott

He voted against the pipeline because the GOP in the house imposed an artificial deadline for no reason. The studies on its effects are still on going and due to be in by summer. But the GOP wants it to be an election issue now so they imposed an arbitrary deadline. You know whats going to drive up oil prices more than the lack of the pipeline? There are three oil refineries being closed in the north east it was announced today. We have tax breaks for our oil companies but since they dont make enough money on refining, they are closing plants, which will impact supply and lead to price hikes at the pump. Go look at the voting records and notice how key oil states (LA, TX, OK, CA, AK) vote to continue oil subsidies. But then we are dealing with rationale thought and facts.....which conservatives dont like.

    • SgtSerge

He never took credit for getting Osama, he said the seals and intelligence agencies get all the credit.........

Well since Key indicators around the world are lower, I would say you should reall look outside America to see what America is up against. If the US was this bad and the rest of the world was doing much better, your statement would have weight....... but since the whole globe is feeling the same pressures on "key indicators" how can Obama be the cause of the worlds problems........ Just saying, people expect too much out of the POTUS, I can't see anyone getting America out of this faster then the world, since we are tied to the whole globe not just America.

I met repeatedly with my national security team as ‘we’ developed more information about the possibility that we had located bin Laden hiding within a compound deep inside of Pakistan. And finally, last week,

I am sick and tired of some of you idiots criticizing President Obama for everything he does. Bush started these wars. He left Afghanistan to invade Iraq. Had the troops stayed in Afghanistan to pursue Bin Laden and Al Queda we would not have this fiasco and Afghanistan.

God help us if any of those Republican idiots win in 2012 - Mitt Romney, who knows nothing but accumulating wealth for himself – his tax cut proposals would put us deeper in debt and will not trickle down; Newt Gingrich – the proverbial, disfunctional personality – who is not fit to run, much less be President. Black students as janitors, indeed! What can I can about Santorum? This fool is so right wing he can't go any righter or he would fall off the cliff. Santorum and Gingrich have racist stereotypical views about African-Americans and do not present the facts. There is a book out that more poor and working class Whites are loosing the values of hard work, marriage, family, etc. and are falling into the abyss. More whites are on public assistance simply because there are more of them and many more since the economic downturn.

President Obama is best suited to turn this economy around and restore America to greatness.

Where are Bobble Head (Pelosi) and Mr. Teleprompter-in-Chief, the Weiner wannabe Debbie (Whats-her-Man) Schultz, and other Democrats now that the Occupy foolish terrorist wannabes have shown their true colors? Does this president, the Bobble Head and other Democrats condone the burning of the American flag?

    • Scott

You are an idiot. Burning the flag is protected by the 1st Amendment. Nothing illegal about it provided you comply with all state and local ordinances. I personally find it reprehensible, but others see it as an act of Protest against the Government. To them they are not dishonering America, because to them America is more than the Flag. I dont particularly agree with it, but it's their right. But you cant say that in America, you cant say i agree with their right to burn the flag, but disagree with their action. And for the narrow minded gopers they only agree with the constitution as long as it is subject to their sole interpretation. (9th Amendment suggests marriage should be in the hands of the people and the government should but out, want to be fair, the government should eliminate tax benefits to the married only allow civil unions and leave marriage to religious and non governmental secular groups, your church doesnt believe in gay marriage tehy dont have to marry people).

That's because "calling out this President" on the basis of ignornat partisan fantasies isn't news, nor analysis. It's propaganda designed to blow hot air up the skirts of "birthers" and other morons who are too stupid to understand the diffference between a fact and an opinion. That way, the imbeciles tune into FOX more often, and FOX can charge more for advertising from assorted Barnums warning, for example, about the "inevitable return to the gold standard" to sell them hyper-inflated products. (sigh)

Solyndra, etc, etc. That is such a long list. Backing the loans was wrong, but that was 1/2 billion. What about the trillions we spent on the two wars Bush started? They were planning on getting us involved in Iraq before the 2000 election took place so all their military buddies could line their pockets. Many getting paid on contracts that were never delivered – writing short term renewalable contracts to avoid congressional oversight.

This INCLUDES THE BIN LADEN FAMILY through Carlyle – yet no investigation to see if any of the money was flowing back to Osama. Ironic how they never were able to track him down. Even as they were leaving office, telling the country it didn't matter if we got him or not. Yeah, just like them convincing everyone Saddam was involved with 9/11 so they could justify invading Iraq. What a bunch of lemming that live in this country. Total BS

It's not a secret war when there are stories about what is going on in the news every night. What happened with Charlie Wilson – that was a secret war. No one knew were in Afghanistan back then. Now, there aren’t too many people that don’t know we are there.

The use of drones is not a secret, not when millions of people in Afghanistan and the countries surrounding it see them flying overhead. During Vietnam, there were weekly stories about the number of bombing raids we were flying and the tonnage of bombs we were dropping. They never said where they were going. When that type of stuff is going on, they aren't considered state secrets.

It's not the best thing to have Iran capture one of our drones – because they could find a weakness that could be exploited. But no troops were lost or captured. Maybe they should have put a self destruct feature in the drone so if it was shot down, we could just blow it up so our enemies couldn't dissect it.

That is correct, the number of drone attacks have gone up, so it makes sense that the number of causalities would go up. That is a lot better than putting more troops on the ground that and putting them in harm's way.

Sharky is right – in one sense. Except NOT in the sense that matters. As Commander-in-Chief, Obama has the right to order military strikes. And that's precisely what he did – this was NOT a CIA "hit," but a military strike against an enemy – no different from countless historical examples of the same type of retaliatory strikes. Obama is the Commander, and the second-guessing from some barely informed idiots doesn't make him wrong – it's just a disagreement of policy, usually a sign of some manufactured grievances by racists or others who were disappointed to find out that they aren't in the majority in this country.

    January 31, 2012 at 1:32 pm |

I've known we've been doing drone strikes, because the Pakistan Government flips out every time we do it. We aren't going up behind these people and hitting them off the back of the head with a rock, you know. As for the people who claim Obama should be tried for treason blah blah blah – just get over it. He's the President, he's been President for three years now. And if the GOP keeps running outside of the city walls with their crazy talk, he will *continue* to be President, because I'm not going to vote for any person who keeps screaming about how x, y, or z person is a secret muslim communist whatever. I will *ignore* you just like I *ignore* the crazy guy outside of starbucks who thinks aliens are digging holes in the desert to bury our bodies in after they take over our planet. Obama handles the business of the country like a president should. He is not a communist ( I think people that say that should take a trip to Cuba to see what communism looks like). And if the republicans think he should be tried for treason for talking about the drones in Pakistan, they should be trying Bush and most of the major media (including CNN) with him. This is not new information.

For obama it's all about getting elected/reelected. He has serious personality flaws..narcissism for one, which is a personality disorder. These disorders to some degree if not all, are caused because the infant child is not properly cared for...and certainly having the mother obama has (17 year old, and a wacko) would leed one to wonder.

The information is out on the assination of Osama, Gadalphi(sp), and the hit in Africa (to rescue a religious zelot and european anthropoligist) ...and yes all these drone hits. obama has repeatedly been advised to NOT do these things...and does them anyway, with no regard to what other countries many think. He ignores real issues (China, Russia, and Lybia..to name a few) when he does these things. He is interestd in only mprojecting a certain public persona to voters..it is all about obama.

I look at this way: Obama is being transparent. He can keep secret what needs to be secret as in the capture and death of Osama bin Laden. Bush on the other hand was not transparent but flat out lied about Iraq, spying on US citizens, and gave up on capturing Osama bin Laden to continue his war for his own personal gain. Treason would be Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld.

REALLY, REALLY, REALLY.....Do you really think Obama is going to lose? Have you never learned the lessons history has taught us in this country. Obama is doing exactly what THEY want him to do which is create enough chaos for the American people to want more changes and be acceptable to more BS..... If they really wanted a new president the GOP would be more united towards that goal, however what we are seeing are 3 puppets on a string who will not win. Obama will get his 4 more years while they are in the backyard grooming the next president after him. in the mean time our society will continue to divide ourselves and fall deeper into debt and chaos because we refuse to CHANGE ourselves. WE NEED TO STOP BUYING INTO THE DRAMA IN WASHINGTON AND BEGIN TO DO SOMETHING FOR OURSELVES BECAUSE THEY WILL NEVER DO ANYTHING FOR YOU UNLESS YOU ARE DOING FOR THEM!

Pakistan is now investigating a Doctor for treason because he assisted the US in gathering intelligence information prior to the Osama bin Laden raid. Divulging sensitive inforation for political gain is a poor excuse for undermining our intelligence gathering efforts; it is discouraging assistance from existing and potential informants. Yet the leaking of senistive material seems to be a daily routine from the Obama administration. Yet liberals seem oblivious to the threats to our security, posed by the Obama crew.

We have NO reason to drone Pakistan! Just as we had no reason to murder bin laden and Gadhafi. We have committed crimes and Obama should be held responsible for those crimes. Treason NO.....impeachment....YES.

First off Bin Laden was the leader of a terrorist organization that attacked the United States and as such he was eligible to be taken out, especially if he could not be captured to be brought to trial.

Second, the US didn't kill Gadhafi, the people of Libya captured him and killed him as he was fleeing from Libyan rebels.

Just thought this may help all of the Constitutional wizards! Please absorb this:

The Bankruptcy of The United States
United States Congressional Record, March 17, 1993 Vol. 33, page H-1303
Speaker-Rep. James Traficant, Jr. (Ohio) addressing the House:
      Re. http://www.apfn.net/doc-100_bankruptcy.htm
"Mr. Speaker, we are here now in chapter 11.. Members of Congress are
official trustees presiding over the greatest reorganization of any Bankrupt
entity in world history, the U.S. Government. We are setting forth
hopefully, a blueprint for our future. There are some who say it is a
coroner's report that will lead to our demise.

It is an established fact that the United States Federal Government has
been dissolved by the Emergency Banking Act, March 9, 1933, 48 Stat. 1,
Public Law 89-719; declared by President Roosevelt, being bankrupt and
      insolvent. H.J.R. 192, 73rd Congress m session June 5, 1933 – Joint
Resolution To Suspend The Gold Standard and Abrogate The Gold Clause
dissolved the Sovereign Authority of the United States and the official
capacities of all United States Governmental Offices, Officers, and
Departments and is further evidence that the United States Federal
Government exists today in name only.

I hate to partially agree with sharky, but his poorly worded point about the POTUS authorizing a drone strike on an individual that still has US citizenship being a mistake does have merit. The rest of his points were useless, and I do not feel that putting the POTUS on trial is even remotely sensible. While I am, at the more basic levels, glad that these individuals were removed from this world, it is with the precedence set that I am most concerned about. If we can, as a country, willingly and joyfully accept that it was morally or ethically right to engage individuals such as Al-Awlaki while they were in an area that is difficult to really call an active combat zone (Yemen in this case), should we not also be willing to accept that in future conflicts the targeting of US military personnel and diplomats outside of a combat zone will be justified? I guess that I would ultimately prefer that measures to capture these individuals, especially those that still maintain US citizenship, were exhausted before we resulted to targeting them. If they resist or if there is overwhelming evidence to suggest that they will commit terrorist acts before we can attempt to apprehend them I can accept the usage of lethal methods.

Consider that most US citizens tend to enjoy their revisionist history, as well as history that is written to shed the most favorable light on the US regardless of the evidence. Is it really that difficult to consider that the founding members of this country were in many ways terrorists themselves?

Still, do not get my wrong, I love the United States, and there is only one moment in my life (the birth of my daughter) that I am prouder about when compared to my time in the US military.

Drone strikes during active warfare are one thing. But targeting people (US citizens or not) residing in buildings or whilst driving in a vehicle from 10,000 ft is basically assassination merely based on questionable "military intelligence" i.e. some Call-Of-Duty trigger-happy 23 year old analyst sitting in Langley sipping his double decaf soy latte trying to decide if that grainy image is an Afghan goat herder with a rifle or a Taliban militiaman. We've certainly seen blatant examples of how inaccurate this type of targeting analysis can be: wedding parties, funeral gatherings, Pakistani military outposts, families in cars. Warfare is always dehumanizing, but this sanitization by remote video controlled annihilation is immoral. Imagine yourself living under these conditions with drones flying overhead at all hours with the threat that your life and your family's might be cut short at any time. So who's terrorizing whom ? And people here wonder why resentment (and radical recruiting) grows ?

I fully support aggressive military actions against extremists and going after the perpetrators of violence against our citizens. But that doesn't mean a President (Bush, Obama) or anyone else in the administration gets to throw out the few "rules of conduct" that are in place to prevent abuses. There is something we can define as "immoral" warfare – and drone strikes outside of active combat are certainly very close to that boundary. Just because we can, doesn't mean we should.

I've read with interest allot of the comments pertaining to the President and how he should be tried. Has everyone forgotten the first responsibility of the President is to protect the country from threats within and from abroad? That includes native born citizens that for what ever reason choose to commit treason and do harm to the country. The President merely complied with the responsibility of his office, under the Constitution of the United States. In direct terms; if anyone or organization or government chooses to do harm to the Nation and its citizenship the President is authorized by law to take whatever action necessary to defeat that threat. Personally, I'm glad he has the fortitude to make such decisions-sometimes diplomacy isn't the first step to a solution. Turman once said, "Speak softly but carry a big stick,". As a veteran of one war I can attest that no one openly wants to kill anyone. However, if you are going to go to war do whatever, within reason, to draw it to conclusion as quickly as is possible. Vietnam is a perfect example of what happens when you don't.

In one of my first Const. Law classes I happen to read somewhere that we elect a President to uphold the Const. and at times violate it. I sure believe that to be true. Lincoln, FDR, are prime examples. It this action could some how violate the Const, which for the life of me I cant see, I am for it. I have a son in the military and to me it would violate the Const. not to do everything to protect him as commander in chief. Its beyond me how some of you got out of high school knowing so little about the Const. Must be from Texas.

The computer techs were a thousand times more dangerous to the security of the US.
Thats why you never hear anything about the techs being killed to..other than the initial reports of 'there was a computer tech/scientist/engineer with Anwar in that vehicle with him."

If we had followed all of our laws in the 1940's against Germany and japan, we wld have lost ww2- simple- end of story. If we dont pull out all the stops against people that follows no "rules" and only want tto destroy America, this
country can be irrevocably harmed. The only reason these people aren't using "dirty" bombs, germ warfare or any other devastating weapons is because they simply do not have them--yet. And you be damn thankful we are and shld use every single weapon we have to stop these people–or you will see mushroom clouds all over this country! I am so tired of people beating up the President, if our so-called allie Pakistan had of been truthful Bin Laden would have been less than 10 miles from a Pakistani Military Garrison, now he has spoke openly about the Drone program and every one is up arms......It is amazing how we as americans can be so hipocritical at 9-11 we pretended to be united, and yet we did nothing to push former President Bush to do more to go after those responsible for that, yet we seems to be laying all of the former administrations dealings at the feet of the current president as if he was and or is responsible for bankrupting the nation, allowing 10 millions jobs to go out of the country, and now the president if be proactive and using our military equipment to capture and or kill the enemy and all we americans can do is whine and cry....if the enemy strikes at us again those same people will be ready to take up arms but it wont mean nothing cause it will all be for show

lets see obama hit Osama last May in the middle of the birth certificate flap (actually presented a phony certificate), even though all his advisors disagreed with the hit(except for panetta, the idiot). He recently knocked off nine Africans to rescue a religious zealot and european anthropologist (who's country would have none of it) just before the state of the union reelection speech. Kinda looks like he picks these murders at very convenient times don't it?

As far as the drone information...since when has obama cared a rip about risking lives for his political gain? NEVER!

    January 31, 2012 at 4:44 pm |
    • Fr33th1nk3r

The "birth certificate flap" ended about two days after Obama went on the campaign back in 2008– when he produced his live birth certificate for Bill O-Reilly to hold and fondle on his Faux News talk show....the FBI verified his live birth, and the hospital has the records. Case closed. I am not even a fan of his and I can't believe you Retardicans are still trying to milk that red herring...

I am a supporter of almost everything the President has done or tried to do, but I do take some exception to the execution without due process of an American citizen. I think we can solve this issue by conducting a trial in absentia. The accused would have the right to legal representation, question witnesses and challenge the evidence. If they choose not to make themselves available, they would then have to abide by the decision and the government would have the right to carry out the sentence of the court by whatever means at its disposal, including Predator drones.

    January 31, 2012 at 5:03 pm |
    • Brandon V. in DFW

In theory that makes sense, but not always in practice. When you have an American citizen that is actively, "actively" aiding an enemy that the US is currently engaged in military hostilities with on foreign soil and we do not have the ability to capture that treasonous piece of puke then executing a contained strike to prevent that American traitor and his terrorist cohorts from being able to make war against the US is a valid and viable option.

    • John in CT

If someone was actively and knowingly engaged in plotting your murder and the authorities could not apprehend him/her without use of deadly force prior to their carrying out the deed, is deadly force authorized? You would have trouble finding a judge or jury that would not support the actions of law enforcement (stateside) or the military (overseas) in protecting you.

Brandon, wasn't it America who provided the Afghan people weapons and taught them how to use them in our quest against communism? Our own government has aided people in the East and it has always come back to us in a negative way. Maybe they(the government) should be tried for providing future terrorists.

The presidential oath contained these words

The crimes and treason of the Bush/Cheney mob far out-way mistakes the Obama may have done. Bush/Cheney/Rove/Libby committed literal treason against this country and should have been shot on the White House lawn.

Not only that, buit in Bush's justice system, there was not specific military involvement, but rather CIA, kidnapping, and torture. Plus holding people (including US citizens) indefinitely in violation of the Constitution. According to the war declaration that Republicans (including Bush) supported, a self-described spokesman for al Qaeda, responsible for recruiting operatives EXPLICITLY for use in armed attacks on UYS interests is a legitimate military target. And these hits are military strikes. So, once again, the lot of pinheaded conservatives are simply too stupid to understand big ideas, so they have to depend on Sean Hannity to spoon feed them. It's really pathetic that they are too stupid even to see how stupid they are.

They are very clear as to what constitutes a battlefield, you can't just pull a Jedi mind trick and say everywhere is a battlefield because it's "the war on terror". With a population of over 180 million most of whom are well educated, English speaking, entrepreneurial and a cultural and social fit with Central Asians...Pakistan will now become the new face and gateway to Central Asia and Europe. Pakistan will thus span this region and provide the impetus for growth, prosperity and unity among these countries. These are new and exciting times for Pakistanis who should now look forward to their new leadership role aligned with Central Asia and Europe rather than the Subcontinent. We wish them much success as they have sacrificed the most during the past 30 + years creating a new world order.

We have been hearing about these strikes in this region for months and months on the news. Pakistan has even complained about some of them. This must be the usual Republican tactic of attacking Obama for everything that comes out of his mouth. Republicans; "If you attack Obama consistently and loud enough, then surely some of it's got to stick, whether true or not." That little green eyed monster enveloping the Republicans over the Navy Seals, under Obama's orders, capturing and killing Osama Bin Laden, killing other Al Queda leaders and rescuing hostages in Somalia cannot be contained. That little green eyed monster just grows and grows.

    Good evening,

It seems this converstion has strayed from the article; that is what makes all of this so great. It is discussion and debate which makes us great.

IMO, if an American Citizen joins a known terrorist group whose primary goals are to harass, kill, and crumble America or it's allies that individual has lost all rights as a U.S. citizen. President Obama is not a terrorist and for those that make that assertion; I would highly encourage you to join the military and find out first hand. There are specific rules that govern combatants and quite frankly this has become tricky largely because the rules were made for an enemy that was easy to determine. Terrorism in it's current form has flipped much of that understanding on its head and the community is trying to make a well thought position in murky waters.

So, if I said someone is spreading hate, calling for the death of a person, making false accusations, creating discord by spreading propaganda; is this a terrorist or a misinformed commentator?

Funny thing about liberals, whenever most of them disagree with someone who criticizes the President, they immediately launch into a tirade of name calling and make veiled threats against the President's detractors without offering what THEIR point of view is...it's just name calling and veiled threats, without offering a plausible defense or counter point to the original poster's opinion. I find most of the rebuttal comments to be lacking in intelligence and maturity.

When you disagree with someone, don't immediately launch into calling them names, or make veiled threats against them. That kind of behavior should be limited to school yards and playgrounds. What you should do is state YOUR point of view clearly and succinctly, and point out why your view differs from the one you disagree with. If you read the rules of conduct that CNN posts on this page, you'll see the words "lively" and "courteous". Sure, we've got the "lively" part, but it's far from being "courteous".

For those who think secrets are always kept, there are numerous intentional releases of information to the media in every administration. We used to call Aviation Week and Space Technology "Aviation LeaK" Whether it is to not so subtly tell the other guy, we have you in our sights so back down, or in the Reagan administration to get the Soviets to spend more money it is a common activity. He ran as the president who was going to bring the troops home from Iraq in six months(after he took office) and that was a lie.
