Obama announces contraception compromise

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama announced a compromise Friday in the dispute over whether to require full contraception insurance coverage for female employees at religiously affiliated institutions.

Under the new plan, religiously affiliated universities and hospitals will not be forced to offer contraception coverage to their employees. Insurers will be required, however, to offer complete coverage free of charge to any women who work at such institutions.

What's in White House compromise plan

Female employees at churches themselves will have no guarantee of any contraception coverage - a continuation of current law.

Obama's hope for relection is the only thing which is keeping him from COMPLETELY ignoring the constitution, and becoming a full blown DICTATOR ... that's why giving this self-serving, corrupt, liar, four more years would be the death of democracy, and the end of America.

First and foremost, what Obama did is no compromise, and CNN is carrying his water as usual by calling it this in the headline. But heck, the stupids in the middle won't know the difference, while those solidly on his side wish he would have just stayed pat and stuffed it to the Church.

It is not even an "accommodation," as others have termed it.

Three-card Monte. A power play from the Church of Progressive Stuff-it-to-ya.

As I see it, all women who desire birth control will still be able to receive it... only it will be free.

Starting August 1, 2012. Preventative services for many things will be free such as: gestational diabetes, human papillomavirus (HPV); and different types of birth control. With no co-pay. In much the same way as antibiotics presently are dispensed.

    http://www.shape.com/lifestyle/mind-and-body/birth-control-be-free-under-insurance

If the employer is not paying for it then they don't have a leg to stand on which they didn't have a leg to stand on from the start...since even as part of plan the employee is paying for their own insurance premium.

    http://www.newser.com/article/d9sqjpko0/ap-sources-religious-employers-wont-have-to-provide-free-birth-control-insurers-will.html

Basically there is more than one way to handle any situation (more than one way to skin a cat) ....so what leg does the Church think it has to stand on in opposition now? NONE!

The President gave no ground since all women who wish contraceptive services will receive that service.

http://www.newser.com/article/d9sqjpko0/ap-sources-religious-employers-wont-have-to-provide-free-birth-control-insurers-will.html The employers won't have to provide the service but women will still receive the service for free.

Well in this case jean you are wrong. You have no idea how health care works. The Sisters of St. Mary provide a self funded insurance plan for their employees that is adminstered by UHC... SO if the insurance company is required to provided free birth control then once again it is the relifous institution being forced to pay for this when it is clearly against their religous ethics. As far as schools and universities part of my tithe goes to fund scholarships and pay the salaries of thos students and teached at that university... and now the president wants my church to spend my tithe on something that is against both my churches and my religous beliefs? You and your liberal buddies have crossed the line on this one.

If the the catholic church as a whole and the far right find this so morally repugnant, why is it that they all hold huge stock portfolios. The Vatican threw the Vatican bank and its smaller partner banks all have huge amounts of stock in the top pharmaceutical company's as do all of the gop boys. All of whom manufacture all manner of birth control products, the list is long and very profitable.I fail to see how they can take the moral high ground on this issue. Jean's eyes are wide open. Contraception is a service for the greater good/welfare of the country, just like all preventive medicine. It should be free, or as low cost as possible. Better than having a bunch of unwanted children running around...that's what I'm tired of paying for.

      • John

You libs kill me. Nothing is free. The cost will come from somewhere – most likely where everything else is paid for. On the backs of the middle class (when their insurance goes up again).

      • Brent

You disgust me. If there are so many 'unwanted children running around' then why weren't they put up for adoption?

Because the parents found that if they have more 'unwanted children' they can receive more and more money from Mr Obama and his Liberal Congressmen.

The Left doesn't give a crap about Religious Freedom in America. They want everyone to to practice any other religion other than Christianity or Judaism. Christian's aren't permitted to display their religion openly, but The Left will be DAMNED if a Muslim is prevented from wearing a concealing garment...

@California Conservative – "Obama only compromises when he's forced to and at no other time."

He has been compromising all the time, enough to get hard core liberals pretty upset with him. It's the price he pays for being a pragmatic, moderate liberal. The lack of compromise has been from the "Oh, hell no we won't" and "Our #1 goal is to make President Obama a one term president" crowd.

He was a 2nd rate state representative, and a do absolutely nothing senator. You could say he was president of the Harvard Review...but that don't mean he was brilliant or even that he had a high GPA...there are politics in that too. So, where is the brilliance....the answer is: there is none...just a fast talking radical leftist community organizer. Dear Mr. President,

This is what those of us whom support you and want to believe in you are talking about. If you believe it to be right, stand by it. I have yet to see the Republican party give you any room other than to complain and moan about anything that comes from the WH. Stop caving in to the Republican party. Yes, there is a time for talking, compromising but not at the cost of them being able to say they stopped you and your flawed plans.

There is no way either party has all the right answers. Nor are they both wrong all the time. Somewhere along being reasonable men and adults (women too) there should be some way that together what is best for the majority of the Nation can reasonably agreed too.

Big business has always been in politics, however I think their agenda is driven more by profits for the select few than what is good for the United States of America as a whole. Now it's ever little businesses piece of the market. Where does it stop?

When the Catholic hierarchy whines, I cringe. These are the same guys that tolerated child molesters in their ranks for decades. Indeed, they even took steps to cover up the abuses. As far as I'm concerned, they have no moral authority whatsoever and should not even be considered. Any expression of "moral outrage" by Catholic priests, nuns, bishops, cardinals or what have you is feigned at best. They have no genuine conscience.

Nevertheless, the President has shown genuine statesmanship in his offer of compromise. I applaud him for that.

@Exlax It is about women's rights and 98% of them believe they should have the right to use contraceptives. Good for the President for standing up for the Constitution, which guarantees each person the individual religious freedom of choice....not the dictatorship by a religious group who demands they practice something they do not believe.

I congratulate our President for doing the best he could for all impacted parties, though, to me, the catholic complaints were much to do about nothing. It just made no sense to me the hysteria from the catholic bishops on this issue in light of the following:
    1) Nearly 90% of catholic women use birth control...If the church doesn't want their members using contraception, that's probably a good place to start is convincing them....Though I would doubt anyone of them would even listen and continue anyway

    2) If the Catholic church put has much energy into correcting the child abuse scandals, and prosecuting instead of protecting the child-abusers, molesters and rapists in their ranks, I might have said this is a principled stand for the catholic church. But all this up-roar over a law that's already in effect in over 28 states, some with NO Exemptions; yet the catholic church only begins to complain when the Obama administration merely follows already established precedence?

Again, where was all of this outrage before? 28 states were already doing it, at least 7 with no church exemptions. This is just the GOP/Tea Potty clown parade complaining about the deficit under Obama, yet when dubya was spending like a drunken sailor....freekin' crickets(?) It just amazes me the GOP/Tea Potty ideology appeals to the lowest mentality, and yet its always promoted without anyone asking these people...WHY NOW all the cryin' moanin complaining? The obvious answer is the catholic church has an image problem and they need the positive press at the expense of ALL women, just to make a political point

      February 11, 2012 at 6:08 pm |
      • Trace

uh Bill, ...two things that I would have thought you already knew....1) Any adult, teacher, football, softball coach that engages in and is found guilty of a sexual assault against any child will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Any of these same people that witnessed such a crime would also be guilty of child endangerment. I hope you know that. 2). The problem that was so distressing about the Catholic Church under these instances, was that many of these priest were protected, moved from parish to parish just to avoid embarassment for the church and allowed these men to continue abusing children. 3) and lastly, I always that that of all the previously name professions, a Catholic Priest should be the last to commitment these haynus (SIC) crimes against an innocent child, if for no other reasons than those very beliefs they are hoisting up so publically right now. However, to me, any individual secular or non, should be dealt with under the current laws for abuses against children, and punished equally.

Now, Mr Bill, do you want to tell me that you feel Priest should be allowed to abuse children and I didn't have a good reason for identifying this issue? I think you just raised a rather stupid argument and found yourself "wanting" ...go back and try again

        February 13, 2012 at 6:50 pm |
    • Conserve

I'll address your first point since this is the main issue, not the child abuse in the Catholic church.

You are missing the point. The majority of the media and the While House wants to convince you that the argument is about women's rights and women's rights to birth control. They are painting the Republicans as sexists and as "White men, all against women's rights". The issue is not women's rights, or what women do with their health care; the issue is what the government can and can't do. The federal government can't be able to mandate that Churches provide care if a women wants an abortion. Women have access to this health care if they choose, Planned Parenthood is one of those organizations.

Because 90% of women use the contraceptives their employer should provide that care for them? Lets say 90% of factory workers at a gun factory own guns; should their employer buy every employee guns because 90% already own them?

If the employer wants to provide a BENEFIT to their employee then so be it. If an employer chooses not to provide certain BENEFITS then that is the employer's choice. Last I knew, the Catholic churches weren't going out and putting guns to women's heads forcing them to work for the Catholic institution. Women have the right to choose where they work. If contraceptive coverage is a high priority to them then they should look to be employed elsewhere.

Next will all companies have to contribute 10% to all employees 401Ks because Americans are having a hard time retiring?

Oh, and the President's compromise? "Health Insurers will provide the service free of charge." Seriously Mr.Obama? Are you that ignorant that the Health Insurance companies will provide a free service because you tell them too? Another legislation under the mantra "Affordable Health Care" that will continually make Health Care more unaffordable...

      February 12, 2012 at 3:10 pm |
  11. Obama 1, Catholics 0

I'm not entirely happy with this solution, because it shifts the responsibility for health care from the employee to the public at large (via increased insurance premiums), but it's liveable and accomplishes the main goal, which is giving all women the birth control coverage they need no matter where they work. Once again, Obama shows that his focus is solving real problems, and once again the rightie loonies show their focus is opposing him no matter what he does, real people & their concerns be damned. Go Mr. President!

It's a perfectly reasonable compromise – correct based on law and public sentiment.

Employers have pretty much been required to provide contraceptive coverage as part of their health plans since December 2000. That's when the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission ruled that failure to provide such coverage violates the 1978 Pregnancy Discrimination Act. That law is, in turn, an amendment to Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which outlaws, among other things, discrimination based on gender. (Where was the outrage over the last 12 years?)

Here's how the EEOC put it at the time: "The Commission concludes that Respondents' exclusion of prescription contraceptives violates Title VII, as amended by the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, whether the contraceptives are used for birth control or for other medical purposes."

But it's not only the EEOC that has ruled on the issue. More than half the states have similar "contraceptive equity" laws on the books, many with religious exceptions similar or identical to the one included in the administration's regulation.

The bishops want to impose their "religious liberties" on their non-catholic employees. Their views on contraception are archaic and have no basis in the reality of every day lives. They're pushing a tenant that their own parishioners don't even abide by. I wonder if the catholic church will ever come into the current century – maybe then they'll see an increase in participation.

Such a compromise.... SSM ( Sisters of St. Mary for those of you on the coasts) is self funded and hires a company to administer the fund ... like UHC... so if the insurers are required to provide this service free ... then SSM will have to provide it free now ... In contradiction with their religous beliefs .... Just Shows you that liberals are not a versed in the world as they think they are.

    • jean2009

United Health Care would handle the insurance....and frankly once an employees wage is paid it is their money not the church's. Since when does a church have the right to tell any employee what they can purchase with their own wages? And since there will be no charge or copay the church will not be paying for anything.

"However, the insurers that cover their workers will be required to offer birth control directly to women working for the religious employer, and do so free of charge."

When a company purchases healthcare for their employees the company decides what benefits will be offered in the plan. Obamacare is mandating what needs to be covered. If added benefits are included it stands to reason the cost will in fact go up. We all know this administration is nudging us all to governmnet run healthcare. The majority of Americans do not want this.

Why would UHC provide it? They are not funding the plan... the Sisters of St. Mary are. That is what is meant by the term Sefl Funded. Come on jean ... really?.

And in Jeff City, MO, doctors practicing in a building ATTACHED to St. Mary's Health Center prescribe birth control all the time. The church in that instance honors medical privacy and does not send priests into the exam rooms with the patients.

What is your point Boomer? Doctors prescribe BC all the time in building owned by SSM. The church has no problem with that ... if you are Catholic the churches position is not use them... and it is not a complete ban. My Daughter has been diagnosed with some sort of Cystitis on her ovarys and the treatment is the use of BC... the church is okay with that.... What matters is your intent... So many of you non Catholics think you know more than we do about our own faith,,, It is sad when people who have no idea what they are talking about step in and become the elephant in the room.

This compromise is not a compromise..it is a slick play on words. With politicians like obama there is no morality to what they say and do...it's all about what they can get out of you. It's like some of the voting ballets you check no and it means yes...because they know their survival depends on the yes vote...they know if they are truthful you won't vote for it. This means they (the elite) know what is best for you and they really feel you are ignorant. This is why no one purposefully surrogates their will to 'the elite'...they must be tricked scammed. NObama 2012...our only chance.

Oh Yeah Obama is immoral for making sure that women are not denied the right to contraceptives, yet the Catholic church that has had a pervasive wave of priests abusing children for years has the high ground on this issue.(?) Really, Really (?) The catholic church is still trying to settle those cases with millions of $'s of mostly hush money, as it is a proven fact the church simply moved priests around from parish to parish, which allowed these sick men to continue abusing young children...and Obama is the immoral one in all this (?)

Yes....I sure will be happy when the ignorance of people like you is proven out this Nov. You are simply stupifying in your logic ...I mean come on...you can't be that clueless

So Trace, where is your moral high ground? you are worried about child abuse, it seems especially by priests. As i mentioned to you earler ... what about all the other pdeophiles that are not Catholic Proests. As for Catholics. well we believe that children are children, no matter if they are in the womb or have actually been born. You don't seem to have those same beliefs.... you worry about the child already here but not about the one that was denied the right to life that you so loudly proclaim only belongs to the living, What you actually mean is those that have already been born.... Is that attitude in any way classifyind an unborn child as less than human? If the child is "unwanted" and is terminated, then what is to stop people like you from terminating unwanted old and homeless people.... is it possible that someday you could be one of those? Think before you condemn.... Stop using your emotions for your brains...

Trace.... I'm sorry. You just don't seem to be able to understand morality and your attacking the church is really ignorant.

      • Trace

maybe you missed the point Nov 2012, ...as it seems you do so often.

I'M not Attacking the church. You tell me ....didn't you have a problem with those priests molesting children? My feeling is that is abhorent to wreck a child's life and the church consciously work to cover it up. Children are very impressionable, and vunerable to predators in positions of authority in a diagonic (SIC) ministerial position. The parents of those children trusted these men. I knew two people that suffered from this and neither will EVER recover or be made whole.

So I say to you again....You have the temerity to call Obama immoral and then double down and say I'm attacking the church and its ignorant to do so? Please explain that stupifying logical because Jesus nor God Himself would side with you on that.

@Trace... I'm not catholic, but, I know a lot about the church. For you and others to constantly bring up problems within the church is just stupid and shallow. You see it would be like saying all black people are pimps and criminals.. Yes, it sounds that ignorant

      • NOvember 2012

oh Trace...yes obama is immoral. You have to be to treat the constitution of the United States of America the way he does... And the assignations he has ordered....never tried to bring Bin Ladin or Gaddafi to trial...and I certainly could go on with this...

since when are women being denied the right to access to contraceptives? The point is...since when do they have the right to demand someone else pay for their contraceptives.... how about, if you play, you pay?

I think CNN did cover the story in 2010; but that could have been a Wisconsin case where one of those who was molested sued the Pope.

Can Obama make insurance companies pay for my blood pressure medicine? He is discriminating against over 50 males! We do not need birth control pills....we need blood pressure pills!

    February 12, 2012 at 1:56 pm |

Under the health affordability act, the insurance companies do have to pay for your high blood pressure meds (less deductible) and 100 percent of the cost of your PSA test and other well man tests. When you grow a uterus, I suppose they will have to pay for your well-woman exam too.

I don't want the bishop in the room with me and my ob/gyn. Whatever happened to medical privacy? My medical treatment is not the business of my employer, regardless of their or my religion. Keep the priests out practicing medicine. I sure as hell should not have to become Cathollic in order to get medical care.

President Barack Obama has produced the Truth Team. Why do they need to use the term truth? Doesn't that make anyone question if they are being truthful? George Orwell had his character Winston work at the Ministry of Truth, which is accountable for propaganda and historical revisionism. His work ended up being re-write past newspaper content to match the ruling party ideological background. Who is rewriting history for President Barack Obama?
