DNC defends Obama on Israel ahead of AIPAC

Washington (CNN) – This may be a first. Ahead of the AIPAC meeting in Washington this weekend, the Democratic National Committee is pre-butting any Republican attacks on the President's position on Israel.

They're doing so by sending the Jewish press, activists and the general media a video featuring Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying in May of 2011, "President Obama spoke about his ironclad commitment to Israel's security. He rightly said that our security cooperation is unprecedented and he has backed those words with deeds."

It would seem the video is intended to buffer the President from Republican accusations that his policy on Iran has been too weak. In the course of the campaign Mitt Romney has said that if the President is re-elected Iran will have a nuclear bomb and Rick Santorum accused the President of actively allowing Iran to get a nuclear weapon.

In a statement DNC Communications Director Brad Woodhouse claims "never have more Republicans been as nakedly political about the US-Israeli relationship and not surprisingly they are deliberately lying about the President's record for nothing than more than pure politics." He calls it "reprehensible" and adds "it's going to backfire."

Cue the video. The voice-over in the one-minute video says "The bond between the US and Israel – it's always been beyond politics. But now Washington Republicans are breaking that tradition. Launching negative ads that the Associated Press says 'ignore reality.' The facts? Under President Obama US funding for Israel is at an all-time high. Billions for Israel's security."

It features video clips from when then-Senator Obama toured Israel and newspaper clips showing $3.1 billion in military aid to Israel. Obama has yet to visit the country as President.

Why does all this matter so much? The Jewish vote is only a tiny portion of the overall electorate, and it's largely Democratic-leaning.

The issue comes to the fore amid continued advances in Iran's nuclear program and intensified speculation of a pre-emptive strike by Israel to set the program back.

On the politics – the President's position on Iran first became an issue during the 2008 campaign when he said he'd be willing to meet with US enemies. And although he's never met with the Iranian leader, Republicans still bring this up to accuse the president of appeasement and question his leadership.

The President will address the American Israeli Policy Conference this Sunday. He meets with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Monday.

Israel said just yesterday they will not inform America before they strike Iran...this is a first and it is important, I hope voters are watching this. No one overseas in Europe, Africa, the middle east or even Asia can trust the obama administration...they know with obama and company it is all about reelection there is no moral rule in the obama white house... we have NO friends!

      Jerry,

My reply is in the interest of the truth! I read this yesterday on Newsmax (very conservative). You did not mention why Israel won't tell the U.S. Based upon what I read, they won't tell us so the U.S. will not get blamed for knowing and doing nothing to stop Israel. We wil get the blame none the less but this is an act of friendship and not mistrust!

You're perfectly correct about the reasons Israel made this announcement. Further, Israel will not use force against Iran unless as a last resort when there will be no other way to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. If it happens, however, Israel will not ask for anyone's permission to defend itself.

since when do we need Israel or any other country to run interference for us? We need to stop this leed from behind mess. We have Israel's back or not! And, it is clear while obama is in office we do not.

        NOvember2012,

Israel is not running interference! They are being a good friend! Remember when Israel took out that facility in Syria? They also knocked out a reactor in Bagdad? Was that also interference? Or was it in their interest? Look, I will criticize this administration's policies when I feel it is appropriate. Criticism is not appropriate because Israel is making the decison and not us.

The friendship that Israel's act shows is to the American People and to America, the country itself and certainly not to its enemy, obama. Obama has shown himself to be an ardent enemy of the State of Israel and the American Jewish Community who will vote against him en masse this Nov. Starting with his inauguration in 2008 to his Cairo speech and his demand that Israel withdraw to the pre-1967 borders to his remarks about Netanyahu to Sarkozy...obama has been hostile and has shown himself to be a true enemy of Israel and Jews. He will pay for that hostility in Nov. as will all democrats. Any Jew who supports obama is betraying his roots and Israel.

In addition to being crooks, liars, and traitors, Obama and Holder should both be convicted as accomplices to MASS MURDER ... for the slaughter of over 200 innocent Mexicans, as a result of their reckless Fast and Furious policy ... in which they provided the murder weapons to the ruthless drug cartels

      February 29, 2012 at 8:30 pm |

How about many of us who feel the same about the MASS MURDERS starting from 911 to IRAQ, staged through failed policies implemented by Bush and Cheney!

Now the democrats actually feel compelled to defend Obama, even in anticipation of any criticism.

Just like you've been compelled to put him down at every juncture, every turn, every step he's made; good, bad or indifferent! Not many people can mantain that much hate and animosity that long and still be human!

Democrats feel compelled to defend obama because they know very well that his actions and words have betrayed his hatred for Israel, Netanyahu, Jews, and in particular the American Jewish Community. There is nothing that the democrats can say or do that will make this American Jew vote for any democrat starting with obama this Nov. and I'm certainly not alone in feeling this way about obama and the democrats.

obviously you hear what you want to hear. He said: our relations with obama/US are in good shape and obviously there is speculation and rumors...and etc.. REMEMBER the president of Israel does not run the govt..and has little power. The real power there can not stand obama.

Will there be any speaker at AIPAC to dispute what the DNC is saying. If so who will that speaker be?

Netanyahu is a militant. He has no respect for the POTUS. Notice every time he comes to Washington, he acts very arrogant as if the POTUS does not exist.

Over the years, this has been the case, the Israel PMs visited the WH and acted very arrogant. This is because they know they have the support of American Jewish population.

Remember Netanyahu allowed the settlement in the middle of VP Joe Biden's visit? Very disrespectful of the VP and of the US.

I'd say leave Netanyahu alone, ignore him. If Obama listens to him, the US will be in a mess.
Israel always drags the US into their own mess. Israeli leaders by nature are militants, they don't know how to negotiate. One day, they will be in very very serious trouble as they have no friends in the region. Nobody cares for their arrogance. Their arrogance will do them in.

LIES rarely make your point very convincing, cnn90. Especially if the lies are OBVIOUS or/and when they DO NOT MAKE SENSE. In this particular case, Israeli PM COULD NOT know that he had the support of American Jewish population for the simple reason American Jews are first and foremost AMERICANS, most ot tem support the Democrats and they would not like anyone being arrogant towards their President. Even more important reason is that ALL American Jews amount to less than 2% of Americans and being arrogant to the President because of assumed support of 2% of the population would be pretty irresponsible. Still further, it was Israel who offered peace and a sovereign independent state to Palestinian Arabs since 1948 and it were the Arabs who rejected each and every peace offer declaring that NOTHING short of destruction of Israel would satisfy them. So WHO does not know how to negotiate???

In the future, try to check your lies against facts first and you'll not make a fool of yourself at every opportunity.

Israel doesn't know how to negotiate? Let's examine your statement.
      1. Exactly how do you negotiate will folks who want you off the planet?
      2. How many time has Israel given land in return for peace and did not get it? That has worked ONLY ONCE and that was when they gave the Sinai back to Egypt! Now the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt is threatening that!
      3. Thinker23 is correct and you are not
      4. What you call arrogance is keeping them alive!

40+ years ofa cycle of violence, land grab, lies and propaganda does not get resolved in one sitting. The one Israeli PM that new this was killed by his own people. If Israel wants peace they can have it but they choose land. What I call arrogance will end up being the death to world peace! Bying your friends will only get you so far.

Your realize that the land belongs to Israel, right? You believing it or not really has no bearing on this truth!

Obama should defend America and not let Netanyahu here. He should cut off AIPAC and all PACs!

    March 4, 2012 at 11:09 am |
    • Steveo

And that would include his own PAC? What you fail to realize is PACS are legal! Why do you want to give him the power to shut down what is legal? Pay attention to your own bs!

Why would I seek help, Anonymous? I'm afraid I pferer not to be sheep and flock to the silliness perpetuated by the UN.Can you give me one solid achievement by the UnAoC that has further one single item on their mission statement? I seriously doubt it. Nor can you prove that they are not bigots who hate the Jews.By "you Tea Party people," you mean we who love individual liberty and endorse it for everyone regardless of their religion? Why do you assume that we hate Muslims? I hate no one. What kind of nonsense is that?! You have assumed some nonsense that does not exist and THAT is why Tea Party people are sickened with the sheeple on the Left in this country. Put down the crackpipe and pick up some brain cells, Anonymous. Stop judging people by your preconceived notions of them - or the image of them pushed on you by the Lefties - and start seeing them for yourself. You might surprise yourself and others by making sense. The only "H8" (how cute, your little alpha-numeric word) that is perpetuated in this country is the hatred spawned by class-warfare and class-envy pushed daily by the Left. Wake up and start thinking for yourself. One of these days, you'll own your comments and stand up for something worthwhile, Anonymous.
