President Obama statement on Trayvon Martin case

President Obama addressed the Trayvon Martin shooting today in the Rose Garden.

“Obviously this is a tragedy. I can only imagine what these parents are going through. When I think about this boy I think about my own kids and I think every parent in America should be able to understand why it is absolutely imperative that we investigate every aspect of this and that everybody pulls together, federal, state and local to figure out exactly how this tragedy happened.

I’m glad that not only the Justice Department is looking into it, I understand now that the governor of the state of Florida has formed a task force to investigate what is taking place.

I think all of us have to do some soul searching to figure out how something like this happened. That means that we examine the laws and the context for what happened as well as the specifics of the incident.

But my main message is to the parents of Trayvon. If I had a son, he would look like Trayvon. I think they are right to expect that all of us as Americans are going to take this with the seriousness it deserves and we will get to the bottom of exactly what happened.”

Stop with the "skittle kid" rap. Get your facts: On February 27th, the local Orlando station interviewed the witness who dialed 911. Almost none of the thousands of articles since have mentioned any of the details described by the witness. Some, however, have attributed false ... false ...!!! statements to this witness. On March 16th, the Sanford police department released new details to the Orlando Sentinel. Once again, these details have been ignored or changed by the media.
        1. The witness reports that George Zimmerman was on the ground and Trayvon is on top of him punching him.
        2. The witness says that George Zimmerman was screaming and yelling for help.
        3. Police arrive and find Zimmerman bleeding on his face and the back of his head. He also has had grass stains on his back. All this confirms the story told by Zimmerman and the witness.
        4. Police play the 911 tape for Trayvon Martin's father, who tells police that the voice screaming is not the voice of his son.
Trayvon – In fact, he was under a five day suspension when the shooting took place. That is why he was staying at a house so far from his school on a school night. A laywer for Trayvon's family has blocked access to his school records.

No mention of "skittles" ..... just assault ..... got it?

Don't make this about race it's about a innocent child! He did right about responding in the manner he did. Americas are upset black, white, and hispanics, etc. 900,000 signitures as of yesterday and the list steady growing it needs to be adressed. Well said President Obama!

Don't make this about race? We all know this is about race. Zimmerman said the boy looked suspicious. What about the boy made him look suspicious? He was black and he had a hoodie on. That's why. The Florida law says that if you feel threatened, you have the right to shoot. A 17 year old boy with a tea and skittles, how could Zimmerman have possibly felt threatened? It is obvious that race is the most salient factor in this situation more than anything. African Americans (and minorities in general) are not safe in America.

Unfortunately, this is about race. It is extremely unlike this would have happened to a white boy. BUT I absolutely agree the thing everyone should be able to agree on is this is a horrible tragedy, and this boy's parents deserve compassion and justice.

It's all about race. Obama would not be making this statement if it was a white (or hispanic, or asian ) kid that was killed.

On the 911 tape, George Zimmerman clearly says "f*cking c**ns." If that isn't racial, I don't know what is.

It's not about race at all. But people want to make the connection that because Obama is black and he makes a statement about a tradgedy that occurred to a black person, that he wouldn't have said anything if the victim was white and the assailant was black. The reality is that we wouldn't even hear about it if it was the other way around. Just think about your local news: white person shot by black person. No one is phoning Obama for a statement there. If you really think he's driven by race, why would he respond to Limbaugh's statement to Sandra Fluke – a white woman? Oh wait, people will probably say he responded because she's a woman. My president just can't catch a break, can he?

I hate when these issues of race occur, some people try to downplay them by saying "this is not a race issue". This is definitely an issue of race. When the New York Police shot an unarmed man 42 times while he was checking his mail in a house robe, it was a race issue. When another unarmed man and recent college graduate was shot over 30 times by police while celebrating his bachelor party and was only 14 hours away from marrying the mother of his beautiful daughter, it was a race issue. When Emmitt Till was taken from his grandfather's house for saying hi to a white woman and beaten to death and had his head shredded with barbed wire, it was a race issue. When a white man feels the need to follow a young black boy who is simply walking in his neighborhood eating candy and minding his own business and gets attacked and shot for no apparent reason; other than the hatred from the attacker; and the attacker just so happens to be white and the young boy is black and the state is Florida; yes it is also an issue of race. The next time a black man kills a white boy in the same manner, I will believe it is not racism. The next time a group of Black police shot an unarmed white man 42 times while he was checking his mail, I will believe it is not racism. When a black man is simply not arrested for having a gun, let alone killing someone in cold blood, then I will believe it is not racism.
Racism is not an easy topic to discuss. However, when someone tries to downplay racism, it only sets us back from the needed progression toward removing it from American culture. Downplaying racism when it exist only shows disrespect for our ancestors (white and black) that have fought for equality in this country and beyond. We should continue discussions on racism, learn more about each other, and except our differences as positives rather than negatives.

Thousands of young Americans are the victims of crime, and we don't hear a peep from Obama ... but, when he can exploit the tragedy for his own political purposes, Obama makes the headlines ... especially when he can concoct a racial theme, to further polarize the public.

It is not about while or black, neither President speech made any impression of that sort. An innocent young life has been taken away by stating him suspicious and in self-defense. If somebody is giving condolences and showing sympathy acknowledge it rather finding defects in that even if you don't like the person. Before Obama no political figure said anything about this, may be all were waiting let him say anything we will find wrong in his message.

This reply is for Dean and other morons that misstate facts. The President was asked a question, and he answered it. The press conference was to introduce the new head of the world bank. If you could clear some of the hate and ignorance out of minds you would notice that the President has stood for all Americans including the now extinct middle class.

Why does that matter? He is the President and this has become a national case.
The key line is "we examine the laws and context for what happened". The Florida law seems to be at the root of this problem. My heart goes out to the parents.
I am not sure why the race baiter Sharpton is there and I am also not sure why BO had to say "if I had a son he would look like Trayvon".

Because believe it or not, as much as this case has to do with matters of right and wrong, it is still mixed in heavily with racial profiling. A young black kid had to die, something that most likely wouldn't have happened had he been another color. this is something that blacks and minorities have to deal with everyday. I see it everyday... I deal with it, my brothers, father, friends etc. And the sad thing is that this isnt an isolated issue. This happens all the time! It's just never really televised as much as this case. As much as people want to overlook the whole race issue, it's still there. Black people still have to deal with that. And I think that what he said was very appropriate for the situation. Because it is true. What would have made a difference between if he had a black son, his son walking in that exact same place that Trayvon walked, and Trayvon. There would have been none, and he would've been shot just the same. Trayvon did nothing, and couldn't have done differently to change that. It was his color... It's sad that this is the way it is. It doesnt have to be though

        S. Positive – that is the point. We know the child was black. This incident is not about race, but the presidents statement of "if I had a son he would look like Travon" is. BTW, how smart is it to reference a son you don't have to simply make a point as the president did? Didn't he just say yesterday that the kids should be kept out of politics?

      • jean2009

        @John
How far do you think progress on this injustice would be today if not for Rev. Sharpton? My assumption is nowhere.

Trayvon Martin would just be another statistic. I assume this from the fact that the guy with the gun was never given a drug test after the fact that he fired a weapon, he also had that gun even though he had a previous record, and the fact that the young man was on his cell phone and had indicated he was afraid to his friend, and was told to run which should have been a determining factor for the first two items to have been better scrutinized after the shooting. Something the local police hadn't done until there was a vocal outcry. Without that outcry it would have been another case sweep under the rug.

        March 23, 2012 at 1:30 pm |
      • John

        S. positive – the point is – for a very smart man this president makes some stupid comments. Coming out and supporting the family and the community is one thing, but saying if he had a son he would look like this child is stupid. How would you feel if a white politician, say Nancy Pelosi, said "if my son were black he would look like this child" just to show the community she is with them?
BTW, I am as dark as the child who was shot.

        March 23, 2012 at 1:45 pm |
      • jean2009

        @John
Nancy Pelosi is not biracial so she wouldn't say that....but if you look at the President Obama's daughters his point and statement are valid.

BTW Were you born this thick between the ears or is this a KKK acquired condition?

        March 23, 2012 at 2:01 pm |
      • S.positive

Dark as the child that was shot is not the point. The point is, if your kid is killed (God forbid) and the killer is out on the street and the police has not arrested the killer due to excuses, how will you fill? That, John is what the President felt and expressed and every open minded human being is on about... If you can not see this reason, then John, you will have proved my point that you do not get it...

        March 23, 2012 at 2:09 pm |
      • John

        S. positive – you and I do not have a clue about how he felt. He is a very calculated person, especially when talking to the press. If you look at my original comment, that is what I feel. It was good for him to show support. It wasn't good to make it about him or his imaginary child. I thought he made a stupid, unnessary comment.

        March 23, 2012 at 3:01 pm |
      • jean2009

No John you are the one who seems very calculated. BTW who is paying you to post here?

        March 25, 2012 at 9:45 am |
      • Roddy

John, don't play the dummy - it's unbecoming. The President didn't mean that his son would look like the spitting image of Mr. Martin; but that his son would be a young black man, like the murdered teen; and he would be looked upon as a young black man by all members of society, and judged as such. It's a comment on stereo-typing, and Obama was trying to identify on a personal level with what blacks are feeling and feel almost everyday in a society where paranoia - real or not, has become the norm.
Race still matters. Not to everyone, but stereo-typing is still the way the human mind works, especially in today's world of "I need the information now" and when a glance is all that is alloted a person, in order to quickly judge their character and threat value.

        March 25, 2012 at 1:03 pm |
    • Geoff

How many times are defenseless teenagers (who happen to be white) shot and killed while the known assailant is not only free but not even arrested? Furthermore, had this been a white teenager shot by a black man the events would be different and if you don't know this, you don't live in America!

How many black murders have been swept under the rug? If the nation hadn't consistently treated black people like they were less important than whites, this wouldn't be a national case because it would have been handled appropriately in the first place. We reap what we sow.

I can't stand ignorant people people who want to constantly pull the race card when something happens. Leroy, Categorical Racism has four main points. First it assigns a category, a value, stereotypes based on what someone has heard and in that hearing, those ideas become truth to the individual. Secondly, it sees the world from one prospective, say for instances, a white prospective. This becomes the "best" way of viewing the world as that is all you have heard and seen. This is called a White Racial Ideology, as it takes on a fatherly type of responsibility protecting this way of life, because it is viewed as "better". This stage is Paternalism. It is condescending because it views others as inept. This power dynamic or hegemony, begins to accept the culture of the oppressor as it is easier to "get along" and accept, "white is right", however, not this time. The pseudo species created by Categorical Racism can be clearly seen in some politicians, (i.e. Clarence Thomas), but not this President. He is for America and all that it stands for..."...All men are created equal." The implication, black man killed, black president addresses the issue, is a blatant application and total definition of Categorical Racism. This President has address an issue of justice and equality "for all". He is a president who is black, not a president of blacks. The addressing of this issue is long overdue. Thank you, Mr. President for your courage. Four more years!!!!

Indeed, blacks statistically have more to fear from other blacks than any other race in America. How about a response that's less than a double-standard from the NAACP, and perhaps we'd have a more respectful view of the organization who seeks scandal over actual "advancement of colored persons".

Mr. Martin didn't need to die. All we have is a law that legally silences the already dead prosecution here in Florida. How many unpublisized cases have already used this as a defense? Change the law, don't crucify the one guy who got our attention.

Since Obama believes we live in a post-racial society, this is just another tragedy to him. No mention of racism from the commander in chief. Does anyone really need an investigation to figure out that it is not just a tragedy, but a racist tragedy? Racism is still rearing its slimy head and Obama just can't say it. I guess everything he says is edited for purposes of his re-election campaign.

How many African Americans were murdered, (such as the bridegroom leaving a bachelor party), by Caucasians that Caucasian presidents made speeches in the Rose Garden about? The fact is, it does not matter. The fact is, the issue at hand involves a teenager killed by a more mature adult, who intentionally set out to intimidate a young African American male who was exercising his rights as guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States; the right to walk in his neighborhood, to go to the store and to return to his home without fear of being harassed, followed or chased by another individual.
Mr. Zimmerman had no right to follow, chase after or to confront Mr. Martin. When Mr. Zimmerman saw Mr. Martin, he made a judgment about Mr. Martin based only on what he was wearing, a hoodie. Mr. Zimmerman stated to the police that Mr. Martin must have been on drugs or something, this without even being close enough to Mr. Martin to determine whether his assessment was correct or not. Also, everyone who feels seriously threatened can just shoot someone because they are entitled to stand your ground? So, this law applies to every individual – we all then have the right to arm ourselves and shoot anyone we feel threatened by, whether there is an actual physical threat or not, and we will not be punished, is that right?
The "Stand Your Ground Law" is the most stupid law one could ever imagine. It just goes to show what type of people are being elected to represent the citizens of this country – to think that there is official legislation that guarantees, the rights of people to shoot one another, and that allows protection of the shooter – proof of actual danger of being injured not required. We can do better than this!

I feel sorry for trayvons family and George's family. George and Trayvon both lost their lives. George will lose his job and be damaged forever, mentally, physically, socially and economically. Trayvon's family lost a son a beautiful young MAN. It's shameful that most people in this counrty have lost their spirituality for each other. The President made it an issue of Race when he said "IF I HAD A SON HE WOULD LOOK LIKE TRAYVON". GEORGE ANY SMART LAWYER AND ETHICAL JUDGE FOLLOWING RULES OF LAW WOULD KNOW THIS NOW SKEWS A FAIR TRIAL ANYWHERE IN THE UNITED STATES! Sad to say but the big guy just painted a target on you. I would find several lawyers and body guards for the rest of your life for you and your family. SET UP A LEGAL FUND RIGHT NOW. I'LL BE HAPPY TO PITCH IN! TRAYVONS FAMILY NEEDS TO SET UP A MEMORIAL FUND, I'LL BE HAPPY TO PITCH IN! These two families need to get together to raise funds for each other to protect future events like this from ever happening again. We need better surveillance, better lighting, more opportunities for young people. More respect across all races. Look around it's not just black & white anymore! At one time this country was only reddish-brown people! We have adjusted why can't you? It's going to take forgiveness and courage to get into the same room, but it has to be done or else someone else might get hurt!

WOW!! The president was finally given permission to speak on the Trayvon Martin murder. A well thought out statement nothing from the heart. He spoke as if this was a new occurence instead of acknowleding the fact that the lives of black men our in constant threat in this country.

I think it is a good thing that the president has come out and commented about this tragic event. Sobriety needs to be observed to give an opportunity for fair investigation. In the meantime, the case in itself was handled pretty badly from the onset and I would suggest it be handled better this time around. It is obviously a racially sensitive issue. Care should be observed not to divide the nation more along racial lines due to this

That's correct. And yet, there's a lot of evidence that the reason he felt unsafe enough that he felt compelled to 'defend himself' by killing Trayvon was Trayvon's race. White people don't have a monopoly on racism; it's completely possible for hispanic people to be racist against black people or vice versa and in fact it happens all the time.

        March 23, 2012 at 4:29 pm |
      • jean2009

Zimmerman is a white/Hispanic in an area which has a lot of racial bias against black people.
Which is not the point. The point is he had a gun, was told to not proceed, and killed an unarmed child on a cell phone with a bag of skittles and a sweet tea.

The point is the President has the same rights as every other American to comment on current events; especially so when he is asked a question about said current events. His First Amendment rights did not end when you become President.

As I have a right to state that Newt Gingrich is a fatheaded idiot formed from the same mold a Rush Limbag.

I strongly think that this case should be investigated. Not too long ago i had my friend Danny Cruz die. He was also shot. he was shot by the homestead police department. They claimed that Danny had a gun but they would not show the video from the survallience cameras. They could have just tazed him and none of this would have happened. And the guy that shot Trayvon didnt have to do that.He did in fact call the police and they told him to not do anything but he still did. And florida does have a stand- you-ground law and the man that shot him said he was standing his groundbecause Trayvon had attacked him. If Trayvon did attack it ismostly likely because he felt harrassed and that is also a formof standing your ground. And the man who shot him obviously knows what he did was wrong because he is in hiding. When Danny died the case wasnt really looked into and thats why i want to help find justice for Trayvon. He was too young to die.
This case should be taken foward. For Trayvon and for his family that miss him and love dearly.

Was there something wrong with making the comparison? This is not about the Black kid, it is about the heart of America. What kind of country do we want to be when an innocent 17 YO cannot go for skittles and tea and go back home safely? If you are of a certain race and when you see a person of another race and something evil is stirred inside of you, you are sick. You need to see a psychiatrist.

    • blaize27

Many of the comments here are crying "racism" because this "poor" black "child" was killed by the "racist" Zimmerman simply because Martin was black. Yes, race has everything to do with this incident and no one should deny that. But "racism" isn't the fundamental issue here. Now why would a young black male wearing a hoodie walking at night draw suspicion from someone on a neighborhood watch? Could it possibly be that young black males commit a disproportionaly higher amount of crime than any other group in this country? That Martin fit right into the demographic most likely to commit a crime? That Martin's age and skin color and him being in a neighborhood in which he did not live most certainly would bring him attention by someone on a crime watch. The fundamental issue here is not "racism" or "justice" but the black crime Martin's age and skin color represented to Zimmerman. The "cause" of young black male crime had the "effect" of bringing Zimmerman's attention to Martin since he fit a particular demographic. Ultimately, the "cause" and "effect" cost Martin his life. Whether or not his death was justifiable will be determined by a proper investigation. But "justice" with only be received when young black males stop making the CHOICE to commit crimes at a higher rate than everyone else. Then perhaps everyone else might not look at them with fear and suspicion and someone like Martin may be able to walk through a neighborhood without any problems. But as a community it is far easier for blacks to cry "racism" and demand "justice" than it is to accept responsibility for the criminal choices young black males make which negatively impacts everyone. It is easier to denounce "racial profiling" rather than admit that it is the young black males that commit such high rates of crime. It is easier to denouce "police brutality" rather than address the issue of black crime which necessitates the police in the neighborhood in the first place. Had there been no crime in the neighborhood then there would have been no neighborhood watch and Martin would still be alive. Rather than all the protests denouncing Zimmerman, the police, and "racism" they should focus their attention on the young black male criminals who are the root cause of many of the problems in the black community and their relations with other racial groups in the country.

For all of you saying that if it was a white kid that got killed President Obama wouldn't comment need to broaden your narrow minds a bit. Guaranteed that if it was a white kid, the perpetrator would be in jail! That is the story here – this was not a case of self defense as there is no way an unarmed kid could have posed a danger to a man much bigger with a gun. This very dangerous "Stand Your Ground Law" needs to be looked into before many other innocents lose their lives.

I think the president saying if I had a son he would look like Trayvon is just saying that this could have been anyone's innocent child. Yes, it could reflect his race but the issue is that this could have been anyone just because he was deemed suspicious by someone. Overall I feel as though the statement was needed despite it being a state issue. The case has caught national attention and for the president of the country to remain silent while the country is an uproar over Trayvon's death would have been idiotic on his part. He needed to make a statement , regardless of whether its a black or white issue when something hits national media attention like this and riles up the American people the president has a responsibility to make a statement whether or not Trayvon had been black, white , Hispanic etc.

Well...I see our divisive President and other black racists are fanning the fires down there in Florida. If they can they will incite violence... back to the 60s. So where is the progress in race relations? The shooter was clearly hispanic and his family, it is reported, is full of blacks. Where was obama's outrage when black panthers were intimidating voters (a federal felony)? This is a phoney distraction and it will blow up in the lefts face.

I think we all get the picture here... divide and conquer...black vs white...poor vs wealthy...and the Marxists run the show... this fall we will speak at the ballot.

Jerry-WOW your so lost! Where does the racism come from is what you want to know right? The racism in this case has nothing to do with the killer and what ethnicity he represents. The racism comes from the government. For example think about the Troy Davis case and this case both in southern states Georgia and Florida. The laws of the southern states and the way they regulate the laws come out to be unfair and not justified.

Jerry, are you calling the President of the United States of America, a Black racist? I understand freedom of speech, but can you prove that he is a Black racist? This is pretty inflammatory. Yes, some citizens are called racists by other citizens based on their actions and statements. What action or statement has the President of the United States done or made that makes you identify him as a Black racist? You have made a derogatory statement about the President of the United States that everyone can see, are you prepared to prove that what you have said is a true statement? You said something to the effect, "Black racists, including the President, now have egg on their face" – so to me, this means you are calling the President of the United States a Black/racist.
Are you defaming the character of the President of the United States of America?

It seems George Zimmerman has two counts of domestic violence and a charge of felony assault against a police officer. This was also his 46th call to police since 2001 to report problems and suspicious people in the area.
The witnesses reported that the boy was crying for help before the shot was heard.

Dear Jerry, what are you going to say at the ballot box? Caucasian men have the right to shoot little African American boys without having any consequence? Or, are you going to say that before Mr. Obama even took office, you declared that he would be a term president, why, because of his race?

Jerry, did you ask yourself where was the progress in race relations, (for the centuries), during which the Office of the President of the United States was occupied by White men?

Jerry, did you ask yourself where were the White Presidents during the time the Black Panther Party members were being shot by police?

Look within yourself and ask yourself how you are contributing to the Zimmerman attitudes that are out there. Maybe then, you will understand more about what Mr. Obama meant and why he said what he did.

This is a very sad case.My heart goes out to the parents of this child! As for all the comments on Obama saying that he only spoke up for the child because he was black, has there been a shooting lately on a white kid??????nnnnoooooo, and just a reminder he is mixed and he was raised by his White Grandma,so for the persons who made that remark go get a life this is about a child no matter what color he was it dosent justify for him to have been shot up the way he was! Obama said that if he had a son it would look like Trayvon and he would.Im sure the parents are grateful to have heard from him!!So,all the negative opininons dont matter!!! I am truly praying for this family to get justice, and for them to have some kind of closure when this is over!!!The way the Police handled this made it a race situation.Lets start making sure we get all the facts out before we start running our mouths and pointing fingers. MY MY what a world we live in, my 12 year old was hurt ready all this garbage,my sincere sympathy to the parents of this young boy!!!!!

If you're not black and are white , you will NEVER understand what it feels like to be black and be discriminated , belittled or mistreated just because of the color of your skin...the way GOD made us! We had no control over that. That's why its so easy for whites to dismiss the racism card and act as if it doesn't admit. Some act like we are lying or something. Having somebody call you a racist word is one thing but having somebody else feel like they have the right to take your precious life because they don't like the way you look is PLAIN evil. Obama had to say something because no one else with authority was. This is penetrating the world,I believe it would have turned ugly had he not said something, because people are fed up with the bs. Also not doing anything sets the wrong example that vigilante justice is ok. It wouldnt be safe for blacks or whites if that was the case, because anybody can get a gun..

William, I agree. Anytime African Americans raise the race, racism, or discrimination issue, it is dismissed by many White Americans as nonexistent. Yet, cries of discrimination, racism by non-African Americans are readily accepted and acted upon by our legislators. I all boils down to skin color and it will always exist. Even though African Americans have been major contributors to the establishment of American society, African Americans as individuals are not accepted as viable, meaningful, human beings. This is the basic problem underlying the disparities that exists between the races; it is the major problem White America does not want to confront. I think this is because, to confront this issue at its roots, it would reveal too much about real attitudes about race relations. We know, and THEY know, attitudes about African Americans are not going to change – No, not being negative, instead being a realist. If having the first African-American President, in a country as great as the United States, was a thorn in the side of many na-sayers, then it reveals to me what is thought about the majority of African Americans who have not risen to Mr. Obama's level. Mr. Obama's presidency should have been an, "Oh yes!" moment; a moment when we said, not only "Yes, we Can", but "Yes, we did." The United States of America did it; Any citizen of the United States can do it – instead, on day one, we began calculating how we were going to guarantee his failure – Now we can say, "Oh no we didn't"

Now, I know why Mr. Gingrich is so far behind in the race for President of the United States; he does not understand even the simplest statement – Anyway, isn't a newt a frog?

The question that needs to be asked and answered is very simple. "Did the shooter fear for his life"? Why didn't the shooter ask where the kid was going? Why didn't he ask if the kid's father had a telephone? Why didn't he follow the instructions given him by the police dispatcher? If he had done what he was told to do, He would not be standing in a very deep pile of Doo-Doo.

Curt the reason Mr. Trayvon's killing is about Obama is because some folks out there are trying to use whatever they can to discredit Mr. Obama. So, we know and understand the reasons for all the hype – President Bush could do the same thing, and there would be talk all over the country about what a great job he did in pursuing this issue – so we understand. Think about this! If this boy was your son, brother, nephew or cousin, how would you feel? This is a national tragedy and it has attracted this large audience because the killer is walking freely. Remember, President Obama didnt wage into this until white, blacks and hispanics took the ownership of the demonstration and as the Head of a country he had to come in to address the situation.

He had done same thing if the boy is from other race. The racism talk should not blanket the seriousness of this tragedy. If the mob has caried their plankards same manner given the exact situation I'm sure the President would do same.

Let there be no division, we are all Americans and should be our brother's keeper.

People, this is not a race issue, its about a law thats allows anyone to kill if they feel threatened. Thw law must be reviewed and revised. I am a canadaian and i think this law is outrageous. The stand ur ground law basically gives anyone the rught to kill. The victom here just happened to be black and the Forida police acting within that law handled the situation in a terrible manner.

1987 Bill Ayers solicited Khalid Abdullah Tariq al-Mansour (a.k.a. Donald Warden) to raise money for Obama’s Harvard Law School education. al-Mansour is an orthodox Muslim, a black nationalist, an outspoken enemy of Israel, and mentor to Black Panther Party founder Huey Newton and his cohort, Bobby Seale. At the time al-Mansour associate Percy Sutton was raising money for Obama’s education, al-Mansour was the top financial advisor to mega-billionaire Prince Alwaleed (Alwalid) bin Talal of the Saudi royal family.

1988-1991 Obama attended Harvard Law School.

I did not vote for the President, and I am not going to vote for him this time. I don't agree with his policies, but sometimes politics needs to be set aside when a child is killed. I couldn't care less what color his skin is, he was just a kid. The President was expressing his condolences to the family, and by saying if he had a son he would have looked like Trayvon is perfectly acceptable and has absolutely no racial conotations when taken in the context of his statement. As much as I hate to say it, it is the Republicans making a racial issue out of it, not the President. Anyone trying to make this horrible tragedy a political issue, whether white, black, Republican or Democrat, is very very wrong

One thing I have never heard, is why did Mr. Trayvon Martin assault Mr. Zimmerman. Was Mr. Marti jealous because Mr. Zimmerman was bigger, more burly, than he was? Was he angry because he only had a bag of Skittles and a bottle of tea? Was he angry because he had on a hoodie and Mr. Zimmerman did not? Was he angry because Mr. Zimmerman was following him, then he got behind Mr. Zimmerman and hit him over the head? Why did Mr. Martin attack Mr. Zimmerman who was chasing him?

Why was Mr. Zimmerman chasing Mr. Martin?

What crime had Mr. Martin committed? Since Mr. Zimmerman had a gun, why did he not hold Mr. Martin at gunpoint until official law enforcement arrived?

If a huge person was chasing you, and you do not know the reason for the chase, and that person caught up with you, what would you do at that point? Would you be afraid of who the person might be, or of what the person might do to you? Did Mr. Martin have the same right to "Stand his ground" as Mr. Zimmerman had?
Did Mr. Zimmerman cry out, "Halt, police?" Did he cry out, "Halt, Security Officer?" Did Mr. Zimmerman believe that Mr. Martin should have just stopped running, and if so, why would he think so? Did Mr. Zimmerman tell Mr. Martin that he was chasing him because he was wearing a hoodie, and because he was a F-- Coon, and that they always get away? WHY WAS MR. ZIMMERMAN CHASING MR. MARTIN IN THE FIRST PLACE. DOES STAND YOUR GROUND RIGHTS GIVE YOU THE RIGHT TO CHASE PEOPLE BECAUSE YOU DO NOT LIKE WHAT THEY ARE WEARING? Why could Mr. Zimmerman not have just followed Mr. Martin and report his location to the police?
The case stinks, whether Mr. Zimmerman is white, hispanic, african american, or whatever – it does not matter. What matters is what happened and the efforts being taken to protect an unlawful killing of an innocent person who happens to be Black.

I have to say that if this was a white child, President Obama, and everyone else would not be speaking out, and acting out the way that they are.Anytime an incident happens the black community always plays the race card, sadly, alot of them still blame this generation, and hold a grudge for slavery that this generation had nothing to do with. I myself believe that slavery was wrong, and sadly there is still alot of other types of slavery happening, sex slavery, forced labor slavery, an so on. But the issue at hand should be dealt with by the facts alone, and not the emotions.

President Obama is criticized whether he speaks out or not on any issue. An intelligent person would understand he was trying to comfort that young man's family. In hindsight he should have left out the national opinion of Trayvon could have been anyone's son. I remember one of my favorite tv series "The West Wing" when President Bartlett told a "gay" Hollywood producer that he is the "starter pistol" for any natonal debate when he gets involved. The producer was mad that President Bartlett wasn't speaking out on some gay rights issue. This issue is not any different. "President Barlett" was not potrayed as "gay" but President Obama is half black, but is considered "black" by society so is entitled to speak out on this issue without malice. I am not a candidate for President and my 15 minutes of fame are up, but i endorse this message. So you haters shut your pie holes . Oh yeah.....I will pray for you...you need JESUS.

"If I had a son, he would look like Trayvon". Would it be his eyes, ears, height...oh...skin color. I'm white and I see Trayvon AS my son...my son AS Trayvon- I'm looking beyond skin color. There is something deeper than our skin that binds us and I would hope our president would speak at that level. Then again I recall the "typical white woman' remark when refering to his grandmother who raised him. Skin color seems to be a focal point and I call that racism. If our leaders cannot function at a level that binds us, if we accept that with excuse and rationality, the we support racism in our actions no matter what our words say. Time to call out EVERYONE who allows racism to cause them to generalize and treat people differently- especially those who would LEAD us.

Barney, I agree with most of what you say. However, to state that Christianity is a White Man's religion ,is just plain unrtue. Christianity is a Jewish religion through and through. The Bible is nothing more than a collection of stories and written/verbal histories of the Jewish people. Old Testament and New, nothing more than Jew-speak. One of the greatest victories of the Jew is to have stripped away the ancient beliefs of our Race, only to replace it with their homogenized , Goyim-friendly rhetoric and dogma. Christ was a JEW. Fuck Jews. I will never bow to a Jew or a JEW God!Our ancient pagan religion is the White Man's faith. Odin, Thor, Frigga, Baldr, Tyr to name a few. Those are our gods. Our people were strong in their faith for thousands of years, until the oncoming hordes of Christian conquerers burned our holy places to the ground, and put to death any who would not convert. They then built their Evil Churches right on top of the ancient places of worship! They also adopted many of our practices, to smooth the transition to Jew approved Christianity. One of the greatest accomplishments of the esteemed leader Adolph Hitler, was to unbury our Germanic Runes and give new life to our ancient faith. Asatru, Odinism, Paganism ,Druidism. These are our beliefs, engrained down to the core of our souls.I grew up in a Southern Baptist church and have read the bible numerous times, and always wondered why I never Felt anything from the words within! They were not words intended for me, and did not deal with my people's history, so I know now. Now that I have discovered my Gods and the power of the Elder Futhark runes, I am a much more powerful and complete person! The electric energy I get from the Gods and their power, is like nothing I had experienced, and I knew this was real I encourage any Strong White to discover their roots, and discard the shackles of the Jewish lie, Christianity. May the All-Seeing Eye of Odin guide you.
