The First Lady and the Kids' Choice Awards

First lady Michelle Obama continues to take Hollywood by storm. She’s appeared with David Letterman, Jay Leno and Ellen DeGeneres in recent months - and Saturday she made her first-ever live appearance on Nickelodeon’s Kids' Choice Awards in Los Angeles.

Mrs. Obama presented "The Big Help Award" to country pop singer Taylor Swift for Swift's work helping tornado and flood victims.

“I’m here because I’ve always felt an obligation to give back; to lift up others the way my parents, my teachers and mentors lifted me. And that’s something that our next honoree believes, too,” Obama said at the awards ceremony. “Taylor Swift may be in the news most often for her award-winning songs and multi-platinum records, but every step of the way she has always made it a point to give back.”

Last year, Swift raised nearly $1 million to help victims of devastating tornadoes in the Southeast. Swift opened the final dress rehearsal of her Speak Now tour to a paying audience of 13,000 people, donating all the proceeds to tornado victims.

The first lady won the same award herself two years ago for her work with Let's Move, her initiative designed to combat childhood obesity and encourage healthy habits.

Mrs. Obama has teamed up with Nickelodeon in the past for the network's Worldwide Day of Play, an effort to get kids involved in healthy activities and away from the TV for at least three hours a day. She also appeared on the network's hit show ”iCarly” as part of her Joining Forces initiative to recognize and honor military families. The lead character in iCarly is the daughter of an Air Force colonel serving overseas.

Saturday's Kids' Choice Awards appearance is the first lady's first "in person" appearance on the awards show. She received “The Big Help Award” in 2010 via videotape.

Martin Luther King, would have been sickened by Obama's insidious use of racism and class warefare, for his own self-serving ambitions.

Howard your attempts are fruitless, and the reason is you have nothing but hate to offer. Everyone can see that the only one using racism is you. Which means you stink at what you are trying to do.

So now it's racist to disagree with the president's policies? Sounds to me like you are proving his point that Obama is a divisive president.

You say hate toward Howard. It is you people who are so racially hatred of the w h i t e people it is sickening. After all No sitting President has ever got on National TV to get involved in Civil Affairs such as this shooting. Undoubtedly the African American Police Chief knows that this is a just shooting are he would have already used his r a c i a l h a t r e d against the shooter if he could have.

So then you don't believe George W. Bush got on TV and stated anything about Kanye West? Or, that he didn't inject himself into the Terri Schiavo case?
If his wasn't commenting or getting involved then what was it.
FYI Presidents on many occasions have been asked and responded to what is going on currently.

King said we should judge a man by the content of his character. He tried to transcend race, and unite Americans. Obama keeps dividing, and polarizing Americans, for his own political gain. Obama is ALL show, and has a lack of character. Unfortunately, people like you and Jean, ALWAYS support Obama, whether he's right, or wrong, because of race.

You're so stupid your sickening. It is not w h i t e s who spew h a t r e d. There is more r a c i a l hatred in the A f r i c a n A m e r i c a n s than anyone realized until this fraud took office. The main problem here is stupidity in that these people will not look deeper into the man. The man is destroying America the land he hates and has proving so by grabbing his nasty c r o t c h when the National Anthem is played instead of saluting it.

How do you know what Martin Luther King would have done? You don't and you would probably have something to say because he would be proud of President Obama's accomplishments. I think you should run for office, so we can get a good laugh just like we did with McCain, Palin, Romney, Santorum & Gingrich.

Howard in a Eutopian Society that may have been his next full focus!! MLK hoped and prayed for unity in America, and even mentioned the importance of it happening as soon as possible! He said he had been to the mountain top and had looked over, and saw the promise land...but he knew 'We weren't there yet'! That's why he told us 'I might not get there with you'! Dr King knew that was going to take a lot of work, he knew it was going to take a lot more deaths, and race-ladened hate crimes perpetrated on America before that happened...and it certainly has proved to be true up until now!! You said he tried...well you didn't pay him any attention..did you?? Howard...sadly even Dr King knew that would be a long time coming!.. but until unity was ever reached in this country, his main focus was 'standing in the gap' for 'the people' against the 'powers that be', who allowed and even participated in unfair treatment, inequality, and injustices against the so-called minority, especially African Americans in your 'white supremacist society'! So don't even go there!! I'm sure you weren't one of those who agreed with him then...and you don't agree with him now! Your posts prove that!! You are still full of hate...so don't try to play the Martin Luther King card on us!! BTW...people like Jean and I would be supportive of Obama if he was white, red, brown, or yellow! We believe that he is doing or genuinely trying to do what's best for this nation and ALL of her people!! We support his policies...that's why we voted for him!! That he happens to be African American of course, for me is a proud PLUS...but I was also proud enough to vote for Bill Clinton as well as Jimmy Carter!! What race are they?? Oh and I didn't need either one of them to give me a personal 'birds-eye view of their school records and birth certicates!! I took their words and voted for them because I agreed with their projected campaign promises and policies!! That's what intelligent people do!! Btw..I can say that you don't support Obama because of his race! The ginned up BS you claim to have against him aren't much more than fearmongering lies, stemmed from hate and biggotry!! That's not working Howard...it's not sticking!! Give it up..will ya!! You actually look pathetic by now!!

He certainly did want to unify. Especially with his mistress. Poor Mrs. king she had to endure his purety. Pure h a t r e d of the w h i t e people no matter how he wished to appear. Obama also wants to come off as an unbiased man but now due to his National TV appearance getting involved in the Trevon s h o o t i n g we know different, don't we? He like the statement along with Michelle their hate for America is not unknown to us Patriots. Obama will destroy us if he is allowed another term. HEAVEN FORBID.

I guess it was Dr. King who was lynching white people, sicking dogs on white people, denying white people basic rights, killing white people for wanting the same rights as black people. Yeah, it was Dr. King who was full of hate all right, just like President Obama. You didn't have any comments when he spoke of that little white girl who was senselessly murdered by that nut job in Arizona. So why can't he comment on the black kid's murder by another nut job? They both, in their own way, have affected this country! I've read some of your posts lately and all I can say is that I really feel for people like you. You will go thru life with nothing but hatred in your heart. What a sorry and lowly existence that must be! YOU WILL NEVER KNOW HAPPINESS BECAUSE YOU ARE A HATEFUL, UGLY AND BITTER PERSON.

LIZ ... you think that because you're a black, female, senior citizen, it gives you an inside track on the truth, on what King meant ... and, that Obama is above reproach ... but, all races, and all ages, and both genders, know that Martin Luther King stood for equality, and unity via peaceful methods. Equality means equality ... not, America owes one group MORE, because of historical inequities. And, when King talked about judging people not by their color, but their content of character, he meant that we shouldn't elect a candidate BECAUSE of his color ... like YOU, and 97% of the African Americans are doing, when they vote for Obama. The truth is the truth ... no matter how much YOU, or Obama, try to misuse it, to promote YOUR political agenda.

      April 1, 2012 at 11:43 am |
      • Ken

And America doesn't owe you the special treatment that you became accustomed to just because you are white. You also must earn your way.

        April 1, 2012 at 1:59 pm |
      • DDanny1

It amuses me when I hear Conservatives berate African Americans for voting for Obama "because he is black" but Clinton got 83% and 84% of the African American vote. Al Gore got 92% and John Kerry got 88% of the vote. Since Barack Obama got 95% of the African American vote Howard could make an argument that between 3%-12% of African Americans voted for Obama because he is black. On the other hand, in Alabama 15% of Democrats voted for George W. Bush, but 32% of Democrats voted for Obama, which suggests 17% of Alabama Democrats DID NOT VOTE FOR OBAMA BECAUSE HE WAS BLACK. Also, 12% more Republicans voted for John Kerry than Obama, so you could say 12% of Alabama Republicans did not vote Republican because Obama was black. But here's the kicker, you could take the HIGHEST PERCENTAGE of BLACK VOTERS who could be said to have voted for Obama because he is black, 12% and he STILL would have beat McCain in a landslide.

  6. Tina

All due respect to you, but you and others that are on ( I am guessing here) the other side are the ones that have supported your georgie boy even though he lied and lied and lied for 8 long years! Pres Obama has never tried to divide this country it is the repubs and their stupidity! This President has tried many, many times too get the other side to help get this country back on its feet because it takes everyone to get it back on its feet, but the other side wanted nothing to do with that and then tried too blame the dems. The repubs already stated many times that they wanted this President to fail, what is up with that anyway??? That is not cool, and if they want this Pres to fail then they want this country to fail, so I will be voting for Pres Obama in the fall, because I am so incredibly sick and tired of the repubs and I will be voting out all the repubs that are currently representing my state including the idiot Scott from Florida, who only has a 20% approval; rating ( he is a joke!)That is a promise!

Might I add that I am white....during the civil war some of my southern ancestors were members of the 28th Alabama Infantry and others Palmetto State Sharpshooters, and my northern ancestors were in the Ohio 36th infantry. I just happened to be educated in the north....and feel all Americans are created equal.

If you want to be truly technical we were the most divided during the Civil War. We were so divided we went to war with each other.

Something your racist mind can't seem to understand.

      • k1k2lee

First, Howard, please stop yelling. Reasoned discussion cannot take place when one person is yelling. Second, the only reason people consider Obama to be "divisive" and "polarizing" is because they cannot abide someone in the Oval Office that has skin color that is different from their own. Pres. Obama has compromised on every single piece of legislation sent to Congress. In return the GOP has filibustered more times in the last session than all other prior sessions combined (Combined!). Even the mandate (which the right now shouts about) was the cornerstone of the proposal from the GOP led by Bob Dole just 15 years ago. You have clearly stated your beliefs about people of color (all of them in very general, sweeping terms) in your many posts. So, for you, just looking at the current president creates a problem for you. It is not his policies that divide but the unfortunate deeply held prejudices by many in our nation (apparently including you) which divide us all.

Nonetheless, I agree with you, our Pres. & First Lady is full of class & dignity. That's why there are those who HATES the fact, that their misconception of black people are wrong & we too are classy, beautiful, smart, & intelligent moreso than they!! OBAMA/BIDEN 2012!!!

Hey DDany1: We all know what a sterling characher Bill Clinton was; Al Gore was a correspondent in Vietnam and yet insisted he was in combat (he was in a hotel room the whole time editing his own herorism). John Kerry, along with Hanoi Jane encouraged violence against American POWs and gave himself three purple bandaids (oops...Purple Hearts) and to top it off a Silver Star. You may want to read Unfit for Command written by his fellow Swift Boat sailers. What a lineup you have to be proud of. You really picked some winners for the Democratic Party.
