Poll: Voters support Obama immigration change

(CNN) – A majority of voters agreed with the immigration policy unveiled by President Barack Obama last week, according to a new poll.

The Bloomberg Poll released Tuesday showed 64% of likely voters backed the shift, which would allow the children of illegal immigrants who meet certain requirements to stave off deportation for two years. Although 30% of those surveyed disagreed with the president, coveted independent voters agreed with the decision by better than a two-to-one margin.

However, support was divided along party lines. Fifty-six percent of likely Republican voters opposed the decision while 86% of Democrats issued praise. Sixty-six percent of independents backed the policy change, while 26% disagreed.

Obama announced the shift on Friday, saying it will make U.S. immigration policy "more fair, more efficient and more just."

The changes would allow people not over the age of 30 who came to the United States before the age of 16, pose no criminal or security threat and were successful students or served in the military to receive a two-year deferral from deportation.

This poll is as true as the election in WI being "too close to call"...
So Americans want to add 800,000 more workers to the current workforce?
I'd love to see the question that was asked for this poll... "64% agree with Obama's policy" – I'd like to ask the 64% if they have read it... Has anyone here read it?

Have you read it? Is it keeping many of your fellow Americans from picking tomatoes?

@John – ...add 800,000? They're already here. @Jay in NC – Romney is Morman. His religion epects him to donate 10% of his income to the church. You can bet if he wasn't tithing something they wouldn't have much interest in him being a welcome member. I won't say Romney doesn't have compassion, but the 'charity' argument doesn't hold water.

What we needed, and what the repubs are for is SECURE OUR BORDERS...
This lawless president has to go. This law could have been voted on by congress and passed if Obama wanted it done (in the first two years of his administration). Now we have a mess that is not law. That is a bigger problem than what we had before. We all know why this was done – POLITICS. The clueless president we have in the WH is guessing as he goes and he is guessing wrong.
There are now grounds to impeach – between Fast and Furious and now this "ignore the law" statement from Obama people would have a good case.
We had a revolution to get rid of the king. We do not need another one...

Republican were for the Dream Act before they were against it...Orrin Hatch was the co-sponsor of the bill...Newt Gingrich is still for it. Rubio now won't submit his plan....because it is the same as the President's. Romney on Face The Nation hemmed and hawed through four questions by Bob Schieffer...clue is he would have done the same thing...just like clue is he would have done the same thing on health care.

And final fact for the day...illegal immigrants paid $11.2billion in Federal, State and Local taxes last year...which is more than many U.S. corporations which paid zero taxes.

I am one of those "coveted" independent voters. Free thinking, non-party line voter.
i do not like the action President Obama has taken and I believe he has over-stepped his authority and duty.
The Oath of Office: Article Two, Section One, Clause Eight:

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
I do like and agree with some of President Obama's ideas. There are some ideas and plans for which I do not agree.
The illegal immigration decree is not one of them. Foremost, he took an oath to uphold the laws of this country... not to pick and choose which laws to enforce. Second, this action side-steps our political process. Obviously, it is a move to create an additional constituency base for Obama.

I am all for immigration. But, there is a process. It is not fair for those who have gone through the long process and paperwork to see it side-stepped (cut-in-line) with a "select group".

The illegal- illegal immigration waiver would increase the medical cost on states and fed. taxes will not be collected. Yet, social security would be paid out to these people (I still don't understand how this happens.)

Action, such as this, will have me vote to remove the person in office. I don't care if they are Democrat, Republican, etc. This is WRONG.

Anyone blogging about this topic can clearly see that 95% of the bloggers are angered by this move. CNN has taken to playing political games by closing the blogs to comments once it becomes clear that WE are not in support of this ANTI-AMERICAN ultra libreal effort to give our great nation to illegal Mexicans. Have you forgotten that your job is to reort the truth!

Bloomberg Poll anyone!? Come on folks, I haven't talked to anyone who even remotely believes this was a good idea. Everyone knows it was political all about votes in November and everyone knows it's not a fix to our immigration problem. All it's going to do is convolute the system and make it harder for reform in the the future. Sympathy for children and Obama wanting votes shouldn't trump the Constitution. Next he'll say anyone living here illegally but over 80 can stay because you're old and you might as well be a citizen. I question whether the President cares about the border at all.

The president showed compassion, practical allocation of resources, a perfect fit. It takes a lot of heart empathy to make such a bold decision. On the other hand, Romney who loves to fire workers does not understand what compassion is, nor care to understand the issue. GOP at large caught the announcment by suprise because they have been so focus on themselves, not people. CNN has a divine duty to expose issues. This is a typical one that matters to people on any side. President, God is with you!

    June 19, 2012 at 3:17 pm |
    • Jay in NC

Get real, Gov. Romney has compassion. Saying otherwise shows your ignorance. He and his wife donate millions of dollars every year to charity. He does not have to give the money but he does.

Do a little research and you will find that Gov. Romney gives over 10% a year to charities, Obama gave less than 1%.

Obama loves to give away other peoples money but not his own.

      June 19, 2012 at 3:45 pm |
      • Jay in NC

Correction: I found that out that in 2010 Obama give over 10% to charity. I was wrong on that point.

However, the larger issue was if Romney is charitable or not. Any man that voluntarily gives away millions of dollars of his own money is charitable in my eyes.

        June 19, 2012 at 3:51 pm |
      • dave

romeny can give over 10 % because hes way fucking richer than obama. 10% to romney is a lot more than if obama donated 50% of his wealth

Mr. Romney is a very wealthy man, who will further divide the rich from the middle class if elected president. Obama is doing a noble job of cleaning up the mess that brain dead former president Bush left us. You cannot blame anyone else but the greedy Republicans for the mess we are currently in.

Deadbeat obama will still lose in november because the majority of voters have seen how much of a failure loser obama really is in the past 3-1/2 years. This amnesty thing will fade away by november anyway and in 2013,President Romney might give loser obama a job at the whitehouse as a janitor cleaning toilets. Now that's a job mabye he can handle.

This President is a bigger threat than our broken immigration policy ever was when he decided to become a dictator and make policy without congress and the Senate. FYI there are video clips of him explaining why he couldn't do such a thing earlier in his Presidency. He "knew" he was breaking the law and he didn't care!
