POTUS's schedule for Friday, June 29: Colorado fires

After a landmark day for President Obama with the Supreme Court upholding the healthcare law, today he heads to Colorado Springs to survey the damage from the wildfires there. The Waldo Canyon fire was only 15% contained as of Thursday so we'll see if they gain any ground on the fire today. President Obama will meet with fire officials and local government officials and take a tour of the damage. He's also expected to make a statement to the press at some point this afternoon. He's on the ground for about three hours this afternoon before returning home this evening.

gee has mitt even mentioned the terrible fires out west??? repos so upset by health care ruleing they are making up all kinds of lies. This is not a tax on the middle class only on those who refuse to buy insurance and the rest of us have to pay for. Forward 2012 Obama Biden

Sorry Donnie! It is a TAX! So says the SCOTUS ..1 conservative and 4 liberals! Just add this to the ever growing list broken promises!

      These are YOUR confusing words.....

"This is not a tax on the middle class only on those who refuse to buy insurance"

So what your saying is this is a tax on the middle class who refuses to buy insurance, right? That would make it tax!

Steveo, what is the problem?? I don't care personally what you, the SCOTUS, or the Grand Old Pricks call it,...the point is Obama campaigned on revamping Healthcare. This isn't anything that this administration came up with, at the spur of the moment, and off the top of it's head!! This is a decades long desire over many administrations!! When it finally is enacted, here you folk go to nit-picking the words that were used in the law. I don't care what you all call it,..tax, mandate, fee, fine, even co-payment if you want; the point is, it is NOT a tax on the "MIDDLE CLASS" as the GOP is running around spewing to steal the middle class votes from the President in November!! Whatever you all end up calling it, the reason that it is even going to be assessed to anyone, the middle-class, the poor or even the rich is because they will be the ones who choose NOT to buy insurance, but expect to go to doctors, hospitals and be seen just like me and everyone else who IS paying BIG premiums to Insurance Companies!!! Our insurances have sky-rocketed over the years due to having to "chip in" to cover people who don't!! I believe we've also been having to subsidize "MEDICAID" too!! There are just too many who can't afford insurance; some working on jobs who under-insure, and under-pay as well, many who are disabled, many poorly retired on the medicaid rolls. Those people don't have to contribute one dime to their own health-care. We, the so-called "middle-class" have been forced to pay for them through our premiums, as well as through federal taxes collected every year!! The 'wealthy' taxes have also had to help pay for these Americans!! It is just fair and reasonable to expect people to invest something into ones OWN healthcare!! If one is able to buy insurance, but continue to go into hospitals through emergency rooms on OUR dime, YES!! They should be at least assessed a tax, fee, fine, co-payment or whatever you all want to call it!!! Tomato/ToMAto!! AND??? What??

@Steveo you need to look up the definition for tax/penalties for many things like (tax-penalties) one is an early withdrawal from your IRA.

        Definition -Penalty -Tax
"A punitive measure that the law imposes for the performance of an act that is proscribed, or for the failure to perform a required act.

Penalty is a comprehensive term with many different meanings. It entails the concept of punishment—either corporal or pecuniary, civil or criminal—although its meaning is usually confined to pecuniary punishment. The law can impose a penalty, and a private contract can provide for its assessment. Pecuniary penalties are frequently negotiated in construction contracts, in the event that the project is not completed by the specified date."

Fact is: the only people paying this peanlty-tax are that 1% who refuse to puchase an insurance policy in a timely fashion...so they will not be a burden and a tax on the remainder of honest law-abiding citizens who are self-sufficent abd buy coverage. I thought the GOP/teapotties were all for people being self-reliant and paying their own way? I thought the teapotty was for people not being welfare "free-riders" and a cost drain on the rest of society?

Per usual it seems the GOP only wants to call it a "penalty" when it was their idea...and they had the bragging rights for passing the bill.. Romney referred to his Massachusetts "tax" on Romneycare as a "penalty". I really don't know how that man can keep a straight face for this farce. Pure hypocrisy!

No surprise Liz! We were told it was NOT a tax! Now we find out it is! I know you don't care. That is obvious!

        Liz and jean,

It is a tax! All of your research and bloviating changes nothing! Just deflection! So much for the commerce clause, eh?

You betcha it is a fully legal and valid penalty tax.

This administration has gone forward – forward into a wall and their wheels are spinning.
What a disaster this administration has created.
Taxation without representation – the King is back...

Good things Republicans have done such a good job protecting that from happening elsewhere. Like in Washington, D.C.

      • jean2009

@John Tell me did you vote in 2008? If you voted in 2008 you had representation! But, in any democracy a majority rules...The health care legislation, as written passed both legally elected houses of Congress by a majority vote in each, and was signed by the legally elected (not appointed) President of the United States of America. So this means that both branches of the Legislator passed the law, and the Executive branch signed it, and now the Judiciary by a majority vote has affirmed that if is a valid and legal law. So, it has passed the hurdle of all three branches of the government by a majority vote.

Frankly, your whining about due process is very unbecoming.

Agreeed. Last week was nothing but rain in Florida while the west burned. Sad situation all around!

This place has been ablaze for the last 4 weeks, and he's just now showing up? Everything is coming under control before he arrives, he'll show up say a few words then in a week declare during his "bus tour" that because of him, the fires in Colorado are now out or under control.

    June 29, 2012 at 3:33 pm |
    • Steveo

Are you in the vicinity of the fires?

      June 30, 2012 at 1:59 pm |
      • C-Lo

No 70 miles to north and south though the boulder fire was about 20 miles west. We were in estes park last weekend when that one broke out and took 22 homes. Amazing to watch these heroes (I definately agree with Obama about that term) working the ground and helos they were running 4 of them through tight canyons with buckets hanging 100 feet down over and around mountain tops and power lines...incredible!!!

Do have coworkers who were evacuated in Co springs but none lost their homes.

FEMA has been one the ground from the beginning. Obama has been in touch with Colorado's governor and the Govenor himself said that the President has offered his help from the beginning and in a more than satifactory way. It might not seem like it to you but, the boots on the ground say he has been plugged-in from the start of this terrible disaster. I have tons of friends there and I too, am worried. Stay safe people, residents, firefighters and helo crews.

God is angry with America C-lo!! Did you all ever think about that?? HE is tired of BS you people are spewing against HIS Modern Day Moses, and all of you will have to answer to HIM, SOON!! Obama didn't have to come there any sooner than he did, as a matter of fact, he's been out that way to fires before to people who didn't like him very much!! Sent FEMA and whoever else was neede to try to put the fires out!! Is it not strange to you that even "firemen", who Rethuglicans are trying to get rid of along with teachers and police throughout the nation, can't seem to put the things out?? When GOD sets it ablaze, man will always have a problem putting it out. If he by chance does, it's after GOD allows it!! HE told us that HE was NOT going to drown the earth ever again; that the next time it will be fire!! I wonder why all of these so-called "Christians" don't recognize the signs!! It is written that there will be earthquakes, floods, fires in diverse places!! There would be incurable diseases and famine, wars and RUMORS of wars in the world!! What is your problem?? Why are you blaming Obama for not showing up for you all anyway?? You are the main one who's PREACHED for so long against "too much government"!! Too much "government intrusion" into peoples lives!! Well Obama is GOVERNMENT, OK?? And I'm very sorry for the loss of property and even lives out there, but we hadn't seen "nothing" yet!! What do you want Obama to do?? Show up with "Smokey, the Fire Dog" and a water hose too?? You folk can't have it both ways!!

      July 1, 2012 at 3:54 pm |
      • C-Lo

Come on Liz you know me better than that! Please don't tell me you've gone off the deep end. Yes I "preach" against intrusive govt! Obama is NOT a modern day Moses and to say so is blasphamy. He is not a prophet or a "chosen one" and if u believe that then I pray for u even more so. I have told u before Liz j like u even though we disagree. Obama has done nothing more or less than what Bush did in the wake of Katrina yet the left thinks, as your reply suggests, that Obama is the Second Coming. If He is angry with America, why devistation in a community that works to honor Him through groups like Compassion International?

It's not about what I want Obama to do...it's about the FACT that I am tired of his minions praising him and referring to him in terms like a "MODERN DAY MOSES" that has to end...do you not see that he has been no more empathetic than Bush during Katrina? Response time for Bush was weeks earlier than Obama not to mention the supposed lessons learner during that disaster. So when the same criticizims are leveled against your false profit (which the Bible also warns against) it is now a tough pill to swallow??

Give to Career what is his and give to the Lord what belongs to Him. Liz, I am no perfect Christian though I wish I was better, but I do know Who and why and how I should honor Him.

      • Steveo

"Modern day Moses"? If you remember Moses was called to lead people into OUT of slavery, not into it! Fires as a sign? Scripture and verse, please! You said God is angry at America? Yet God is not angry at abortion (which YOUR party supports)? Nor is He angry at same s-e-x marriage (which YOUR party supports)? Sorry Liz but God said NO, yet YOUR modern day Moses supports it? I though Moses obeyed the word of God? Obama is NO Moses! While I am not a Bible scholar, Liz, I do teach Adult Bible classes, which means I have to read and study for myself! You are WAY off course, Liz and that is truly sad!!

I feel so sorry for the people who have lost their homes, but at least your Governor of Colorado is not in a pissing contest wth the President.... like the idiot governor of Ohio who doesn't want U.S. national guard help for the people of the State of Ohio.

Here we have people who have been without power since Friday in 90+ degree heat, and maybe some will be without power until the first of next week. Our power was just restored (which could be temporary during the time other locations come back online). With a husband with MS plus his other health issues, this means we had the squad transport him to the hospital followed by a quick transfer to the nursing home, and maybe if the power holds he can be transported home again tomorrow, or Wednesday.

Vanished?? I'm still watching propagandists talk about it this morning!! This is Sunday morning!!

Liz there was a very specific story here with a lot of chatter...has nothing to do with the overall story.

Liz, Yes it vanished! Very interesting how stories about the White House vegetable garden and burger joints linger for days and this important story VANISHES rather within hours!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IRS_penalties
FYI Here is a list of the Penalty taxes for non-compliance.
    Marriage Penalty Tax
    Withholding Penalty Tax

Basically it is a penalty tax on a tax for non-compliance.

    July 2, 2012 at 1:27 pm |
    • C-Lo

Jean–these comparisons are not even in the same UNIVERSE..."marriage penalty tax" isn't listed anywhere in the IRS codes, like the Death tax, which I suppose you consider the same for non-compliance with the act of LIVING. It is verbage used to describe the higher tax brackets dual income households may incure vs. if each wage earner were to file separately...thought you might know that since you are so proficient at using Google.

The "withholding penalty tax" is more of your inability to read or comprehend what you read–it is the same as a personal penalty for not submitting what you owe the almighty D.C. to prevent employers from withholding the taxes from paychecks and embezzelling it (not sending it to the IRS)–you would find this penalty attached to a tax fraud or tax evasion criminal conviction.

If this is the best you can come up with, which I am sure it is, it only proves that this new "tax/penalty" is in a league of its own, which we already knew.
