Obama alters campaign trip to travel to hurricane zone

(CNN) - President Barack Obama plans to go to Louisiana on Monday to meet with officials handling the response to Hurricane Isaac, which made landfall this week, the White House said Friday.

According to White House Press Secretary Jay Carney, the president canceled a campaign trip to Cleveland, Ohio in order to make the Gulf Coast visit. He will travel from Toledo, Ohio to Louisiana.

Actually, there is a race. See, Romney went there to get national attention hoping more people would donate once they see the damage. Obama has 7 more stop in battle ground states and made an opening in his schedule to just go see what's up. One man is a true leader, the other is just working on getting more votes. It's a simple decision.

CORRECTION ... Obama went to the hurricane zone, because his advisors and handlers told him it would be a good political perception, for getting votes. EVERYTHING obama does, is self-serving, in order to hold onto power. Romney does countless good deeds, even when nobody is watching !!!

Howard you are such a fact challenged moron. Obama addressed the TROOPS today at FORT BLISS who are getting ready to ship out to Afghanistan and the troops who have just returned. REMEMBER AFGHANISTAN?? Just like you to forget OUR SOLDIERS in your mindless, vacuous, air-sucking rant THAT YOU OVERLOOK that CONDI RICE NEVER MENTIONED that OUR SOLDIERS were STILL IN AFGHANISTAN in her speech at the convention. Seeing AS SHE WAS PARTof the administration THAT SENT THEM THERE in the first place I FOUND IT DEPLORABLE!!

Thank you U.S. Military and their families. Stay strong and come home safe.

@ Cynthia L. ... If only your indignant outrage was REAL. You phony liberals, including our phony President, Barack Obama, seize on every comment and news item, to either demonize your opponents, shower undeserved praise on obama, or express your fake outrage. You liberals have never supported our troops ... and, believe me, they know it. You fools have picketed recruiting offices ... kicked R.O.T.C. off college campuses ... suppressed votes of our soldiers ... cut back necessary military budgets ... disregarded our Generals on the ground ... BUT, you've never missed a self-serving PHOTO OP, even if it hypocritically exploited our military. I served in our military ... so, don't give he your B.S. fake outrage, simply because I'm telling the truth about our poor excuse for a President.

        @ Cynthia L. PART 2 ...

In addition to all the B.S. ways you liberal hypocrites praise our military, while stabbing them in the backs ...
You LEAK secret military information, which can put our troops in jeopardy, so that Obama can get his Hollywood buddies to promote his campaign ... you release terrorists, so they can return to the battlefield, and kill more of our soldiers ... you refuse to use the word terrorist, to describe terrorists ... you provide U.S. tax dollars to countries who hate us ... you make nice nice with America's enemies ... you want to give battlefield prisoners due process, here in the U.S. ... you defend murderers who kill our border agents ... and the list goes on and on ... so, shut your pie hole ... Cynthia L..

Where was Pres.Obama after the Oil spill, absent, where was he after the Tennessee floods, absent, flooding after Hurricane Issac, absent, guess just white folks got flooded, no need to go, but you screamed your head of because Pres.Bush had not immediatly stop all rescue attempts in New Orleans just so he could visit the flood victims. Today the President went to Ft.Bliss and all personel was ORDERED to be at the assembly.

I'm a mom of an Iraqi and a Afghanistan veteran who is still serving his country. I have NEVER done anything to encourage any disrespect of our soldiers EVER. You cannot ever say ONE THING POSITIVE about this President, YOU give yourself little room to act all above the fray when you do not choose to look at something so cold as, CONDI RICE'S disrespect for our TROOPS by NOT ACKNOWLEDGING THEM in her rah-rah-patriotic speech. I don't believe for one second you EVER SERVED THIS COUNTRY. You have no honor and show your shallowness every friggin' day that tells us you don't care about this country one whit. If Republicans were willing to work for the American people and be honest in their dealings and quit trying so hard to suppress people's right to vote – PEOPLE WOULD VOTE FOR THEM. DUH. But as long as you don't I will work hard to see you fail to have the power to destroy a great country that your party left wounded and bleeding. You aren't interested in the truth. If you were you would realize that our soldiers are not only conservatives, they are also liberals, libertarians, and Independents. I could ask you about the Conservative Timothy McVeigh's attack on over two hundred people and you would cry foul if I lumped you in with him. If anyone on here could convince someone to vote for Mitt, it certainly wouldn't be you.

        @ Cynthia L. – PART 3 ...
Whether you believe it or not ... I did serve in our military ... and, I received an honorable discharge.
I can hardly believe that you're the mother of 2 U.S. service men, serving overseas. Any parent with sons in our military could not possible approve of the liberal mistreatment of our service personnel ... as I listed in the two aforementioned comments. Obama, and this administration has placed our servicemen and women in danger, while depriving them of needed equipment, while violating their rights. That's why, in spite of the B.S. photo ops, our military intensely dislikes Obama. Only their sense of duty and honor, prevents them from speaking their minds. You, on the other hand, are betraying the trust, safety, rights, and benefits, to our troops. WAKE UP !!! Regarding your reference to the TRUTH ...
Obama has betrayed countless promises he has made and broken ... as PROVEN in hours of video tape, over the past 4 years. Regarding Condi Rice ... Ms. Rice is a national treasure ... She is an extremely intelligent lady, who has served this country with honor ... you don't have the right to lick Ms. Rice's boots. So, once again ... why don't you just shut your pie hole !!!

        August 31, 2012 at 9:22 pm |
      • Cynthia L.

@Howard you are not a patriot, you are a coward and would never serve your country with honor. As far as Condi Rice goes she is a part of the biggest, lying, war-mongering administration we have ever had and I wouldn't dream of treating her with anything but scorn for her part in scamming the American people and putting them in greater danger by her actions. You like to think our military hates our President, I have heard personally how much they hated Bush.

Cynthia... you are a certifiable whack job.. .please take your meds..... you thank the current service members for there sacrafice ... but those that served before them are not partiots? HOW DARE YOU make that distinction! IT IS YOU that does not have the slightest idea what a partiot is.

Veterans of our Armed Forces, please accept my heart felt apology for the words of Cynthia... She is obviously out of control and does not understand what a partiot is. As a vietnam vet.... I want to thank all members of our military or their service to this country no matter what war, conflict they fought in AND more importantly no matter what their political affiliation.

I would agree that Republican's don't have a majority of the minority vote and it's primarily because we won't promise poor people money through government programs. That is a fact, it's not meant to have racial overtones. The Republican message to entitlement recipients who are able to work but find it easier not too is something those recipients would rather not hear. To the welfare recipient who does want out of the entanglement of the safety net, wants a better life, the Republican Party offers that hope. Democrats just promise to keep it easy to get government payments, that's safety with no hope. You can have both with the Republican Party. If that message were believed instead of the lies and loud accusations that very irresponsible people spew on TV shows about Republican's being, racist, against women, against old people, against the middle class, only for the rich, and all the other stereotypes being hurled at us. All we ask anyone of any race, religion, or sex to do is read what we are about. Turn off the platitudes and the preconceived notions and read our message through a filter that asks why instead of immediately discounts something. The Republican Party, my party, has always been inclusive of all peoples with the shared idea of low taxation, opportunity for growth as a person and a nation, and self accountability and responsibility.

I sew items for Cancer Kids who are in long term care providing my own supplies and NEVER taking a DEDUCTION on taxes for it because it is the right thing to do. I volunteer to help with fundraisers for the local schools and for a horse rescue group. I even volunteer to do work at the polling places. What do you do? Go golfing and just watch sports all day?
I am a self-employed professional and have been most of my life. I don't need NO STINKIN' HELP but, since I spent my time and money on training to be an EMT YOU might NEED MY HELP SOMEDAY. Should I see if you are on Social Security? Why do I care, you had to work to get it. Are you rich? Why do I care, if you are rich honestly? I might have to help rescue you – should I care that you're an ass??

Not what I said you ID1-T..... try reading it again.... Or I can simplify it for you... IF all you do is buy it done then what sort of person are you? Certainly not one that will put themselves out for people in need.... Where is your compasion? you claim to be all about the common person.. unless of course you have to personally do something..... Read what I do.... The last presiddent of the Red Cross was paid over 505,000.00 anually.... I suspect most of your contribution went to salaries... Most of my contributions are made through the Franciscan outreach of the church.. Annual salary... room and board.... I see that you sew... but still where is the personal part of your ministry.... Do you just give them to someone to take for you????

You are now commig up with all sorts of "other" things that you do.... hmmm suspicious...

Mitt is there to stand in front of a camera and pose with some wet refugees. Does he care enough to do anything for them? Uh. Nope. He has a campaign to run. Jindal is disrespecting his own constituents by involving them in Romney's "dog and pony" show. Disasters are not for political gain fellas. What's next? Is Mitt going to visit Afghanistan and start directing the war? Candidates are only permitted to talk about the issues pertaining to the Presidency. He isn't the President! He is literally obstructing the relief effort by going there! Who is acting as his police escort? The locals have to play security instead of doing relief work thanks to Mitt sticking his head where it doesn't belong!

He's already said why he's there. But you seem to filter information. He was there to bring national attention to the state and the damage so that more donations would flow in. He can't do much but as a presidential candidate with the media following, he can show what's going on in Louisiana. Got it?

Obama should have changed his plans immediately and gone to Louisiana immediately; at the very least, yesterday he should have said I'm going on Friday or Saturday or whenever. He just let Mitt get one up on him.

The very fact that Obama bumped up his visit tells you that Mitt's getting there first bothered him. Obama is so used to getting his way and being stroked by the media that I imagine his big ears were steaming hot.

What about the other 7 rallies he's going to be attending before going to Louisiana? I'll even give you the military visit. What about the other 7 RALLIES to gain votes before he visits people suffering? Can you possibly defend that?

Guess what, Frank, If Jindal can't handle a Cat 1 Hurricane and he is Gov. of Louisiana, a place that gets them often enough, then Jindal ain't worth squat. Jindal was beating his chest for help BEFORE the hurricane hit AND Obama sent it early. If anyone is trying to make a name for himself – IT'S JINDAL who does not want to be UPSTAGED by the President's arrival. If you have been paying attention to the news out of Louisiana, you can see JINDAL BEING A JERK (pissed he missed the Republican Convention where he wanted to strut his stuff) SO NOW, he has to act all mighty, importantly revelent for the cameras. I hope he did his job for the people of Louisiana AND HE DOESN'T squander the thanks to the American Taxpayers who pay for the help he was sent in a more than timely manner AND of the expense the American Taxpayers have been spending and continue to spend on his states LEVEE REPAIRS, FLOOD DAMAGE AND THE CITIZENS OF HIS STATE from the last hurricanes. We'll see won't we??

The military personnel would probably have preferred he didn't visit. Most military personnel do not like him, and his actions have shown his disdain for military personnel and we know it.

We should all be thankful that Obama can alter his busy campaign schedule (that's exactly what this article said) to meet with his fellow American's who are suffering the loss of lives and homes in what turned out to be a serious rain event for Mississippi and Louisiana. Mr Obama has the opportunity to be nonchalant about this because there is a Republican Governor that is in charge of both situations in both states. Take your time Mr President, it's all under control anyway and the camera's follow you, so there's no photo op to miss. You create them as you go.

It's amazing at how blind libs/dems are. His Ft. Bliss trip was political motivated, it was on the 2yr anniversary. Military personnel have no choice in attending Obummer's speach. As a recent retiree, I can tell you that most military personnel do not like Obummer at all. Unless he's an idiot (oh wait, he is), he definately knows how most service members feel. His actions have made it very clear that he despises the military, and if it was for political reasons he would probably never address the troops. So he should have gone to New Orleans instead, and almost no one would have complained.

    September 1, 2012 at 1:30 pm |

While addressing the troops, you failed to say how little applause he got throughout his speech, at one point he tried "yeah i hear you" and no response, he now knows that he will not be getting the majority of military votes because they don't respect him or any part of his lies.

He is a worthless draft-dodging, tax-evading moron. A selfish, low-life who didn't honor our sons and daughters who are serving AND have served in that dangerous place.

You are full of it. Obama has the deepest respect for our soldiers. His grandfather was in WWII serving under Gen. Patton, and was a person Obama loved as a son would love a father.
I suppect you are okay with Mitt's three deferments while the Vietnam war was going on, while he was PROTESTING TO KEEP THE DRAFT. Another who's-your-daddy story.
And, it obviously doesn't bother you that MITT didn't even give our troops the respect they deserved during a Nat'l Convention. I won't forget it. And, a lot of the other military families out there won't either.

I bet you have no problem with Clinton avoiding the draft?

I retired from the military two months ago, after serving 23 years. It is sickening to see people try to say what military personnel think, when they themselves have never served or served only four years in the 80s. So unless you have very recent PERSONAL experiance in the military, you have no grounds to base what you say and need to keep quiet.

        September 2, 2012 at 6:35 pm |
      • Cynthia L.

I wasn't avoiding it, in fact, I just noticed you asked. I do know about an accusation about Bill Clinton trying to avoid the draft that came out sometime in 1992 or, close to that time. And, I do know that there was plenty of evidence shown to prove it wasn't true, even though he was against the Vietnam war (pretty much, most people were at that time including my two brothers who were drafted along with plenty of our friends who were against the war, as well).
Bill Clinton was raised by a single mother of limited resources. Many of you military folks know about the ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corp) that is offered to young men and women through their middle-school, high school and college programs. For a guy that didn't have a dad, I'm sure that it offered good values, good influences, military history and even training BUT not only that, it offers its participants a way to get into higher learning and military academies if you can maintain good grades. It DID NOT, however, protect you from the draft. It would prepare you to serve, but not from having to serve.
My understanding was that he chose to drop out of the ROTC and receive the same numbered system of the draft as most others had. His number was fairly high so was not called before the war was ended. But, HE WAS NOT a who's-yer-daddy in the RIGHT ZIP CODE kid. So, when you hear the story of draft-dodging, it has already been throughly debunked. And, like stories go, someone doesn't check it out and blabs away on hearsay.
Now, I do know some information about Bush's service that was checked out and verified AND HE WAS a who's-yer-daddy IN THE RIGHT ZIP CODE kid.
You guys can hear it from me, or, check it out on your own. There are plenty of people with sites but, try to pick one that has creditials and cares about their future reputation as a credible news source.

American Red Cross – For Donations – 1-800-448-3543 Regular Business Hours
    http://www.redcross.org

You can direct any donations to a particuliar area, like for instance 'Isacc' which they are asking for any help you wish to send. In some locations there is a free pickup service for items such as food and clothing. Or, by calling the 800 number for an address, to send directly to their distribution stations in the area affected.
The Red Cross is always in need of money to operate. And, because they SHOW UP with help almost immediately whenever there is a disaster, I feel certain my donations are well managed and used to help those in need quicker than any other charity. You also can set up a monthly donation program, which is best for me because I just pay it with my monthly bills or, you can donate just a lump sum. They are ALWAYS GRATEFUL.
The Red Cross is still operating in Haiti and other places around the world so, like I said you can direct your donations to where you want them spent or, leave it up to them to use however and where ever they need to.

There is an article by Caitria O'Neill today (Sept 2) HOW COMMUNITIES BOUNCE BACK FROM DISASTER –
It covers the need for communities to ALREADY HAVE A PLAN IN PLACE. and, if not, and you are hit with a disaster HOW to put one in place after the fact – The agencies that can help and the resources that are availible.
Like BILL pointed out, churches usually, not always, but usually, have an organized system in place for accepting donated items and don't usually mind if you jump in to help in any way you can. However, I agree with the article that
you must contact them first before donating items as some things are weighty, inappropriate for their system, taking in to account the storage space they have availible before shipping takes place. MONETARY DONATIONS help with trucking and mailing costs AND CANNOT BE DISMISSED by anyone (unless you are Bill WHO even though he is helping can't accept that some people don't wait for a disaster to donate.) MONETARY DONATIONS can also buy supplies that haven't already been received but are still needed badly. Animals are also victims, Horses, Cows, pigs, and domestic pets EVEN those in zoos. PLEASE help them too if you can.
In some areas recovery takes years and years. In others not so long. But, if it was you that needed the help you would not be CHOOSEY how you received it. JUST THANKFUL.
For those churches, organizations and towns that would like to have help in setting up a plan for a disaster, should it befall your community or someone else's, you can get information from the Red Cross or, go to the web address provided in the CNN article today....www.Recovers.org

Here, I will personally stress HOW IMPORTANT it is to LEARN FIRST AID as, you never know when you will need it for yourself, your family and friends, or others. Most people freak out when they don't know what to do BUT with a simple course you will have the basic knowledge that may save a life. DO IT. American Red Cross has listings for classes throughout the U.S. and, who knows, you may discover you enjoy having the peace of mind it provides and choose to go further into more advanced classes.
Hoping the BEST for the victims of Isacc. He won't be the last hurricane to hit the gulf but, I hope you never have to experience another loss personally. Many good people are motivated to help -even Bill.

.00Most Churches don't pay thier organize over 505,000,00 a year either .... Do not have the budget for it..... Why is it I wonder, that organizations like the red cross pay salaries that and most wall street employees (not presidents) would like to have but rely on donations from companies like A B Inbev for water to send to NOLA????

        September 2, 2012 at 8:46 pm |
      • Cynthia L.

I don' t know the answer to that Bill, how much of an operating cost for your church's building, utilities, repairs and pastor salary and housing expenses comes out of your donations? Plus, they are tax-exempt as well, just like your church. Some of the Mega Church's Pastors are extremely rich people personally because of their flock.
I have chosen the Red Cross because of it's reach. Unless, you donate money directly to just a person, there are going to be overhead costs. I like the fact they provide free clinics, which do others, education and have been able to get into places that are off limits to some organizations when it comes to the red-tape operating in other countries. Alot of times they have the pull to get relief sooner because they are well known and many countries governments are very suspious of private organizations that aren't as famous. However you choose to donate, whether it is through your church or even personally driving a truck full of supplies yourself, or being a part of a construction team, whatever, the idea is to care that someone, somewhere is helped. My area Red Cross also has drills and coordinates with other first responders in the public sector such as the Fire Dept., Police and Search and Rescue which, is a cool thing just in itself. Food drives are done in all of those venues as well as your church. I don't ever try to compare with what someone can do for others because I am not walking in their shoes when it's just a can of tuna they can afford. It all adds up and that's the point. Is it not?
Kudos, to you Bill for helping. The people affected by Isacc apprieciate it, I know. It's hard to imagine loosing everything you had. Even if it's just the memories family photos bring.
Maybe you can post some info on NOLA so people here can decide if that's the way to go. There are many good people out there that can do what a bigger organization can't. Even if it's just one person sending a bag of diapers, or dog food that is a sweet thing to do.
