POTUS's schedule for Friday, August 31

President Obama holds his first official event since July when he spends the day with troops at Fort Bliss, Texas. While there he'll deliver remarks at the First Aviation Support Battalion Hanger on base and will have a round-table discussion with soldiers and their families. This is his second visit to Fort Bliss since he became President. The last time he was there was exactly two years ago when he visited with troops before making the announcement that the combat operation in Iraq would be coming to an end. Later that evening, he made a statement from the Oval Office in primetime back in 2010. The last combat troops left Iraq on December 17, 2011. This, of courses, is one of the accomplishments that President Obama mentions in most campaign speeches of promises he has kept as president. He'll focus on the anniversary of his announcement with remarks "underscoring his commitment as Commander-in-Chief to responsibly ending those wars, while strengthening the health of our force and providing additional support to combat two unseen wounds of these wars – Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injuries."

Is that the segment where Mitt is ragging on the fact that Chris Christie used the WORD "I" 47 times in his speech the other night and only said MITT 8 TIMES??

HE IS LITERALLY DESTROYING OUR COUNTRY. SAVE AMERICA ... DUMP OBAMA ...

while the bloviated buffons at the rnc are drooling over that dottering old man talking to a chair and making the usual repo nasty remarks the president is busy visiting with our men in uniform. Forward. 2012

To bad you don't see or hear nasty remarks coming for the left! Actually I think you see and hear them, you just choose to ignore them! Glad the Commander-In-Chief is visiting the troops! At the same time Romney is visting those affected by the storm!

I think the RNC had u mind on thier theme, how disrespectful to Clint, the problem with Oblunder and the gang they dont respect anybody. I thought clint was very funny, a whole lot funnier than clooney & Letterman. This is a country whos moral compass is def off kilter. Kids with no direction or respect nothing but the minute, i really believe family values are lacking and it wouldnt hurt to bring them back

      August 31, 2012 at 11:01 am |
      • Cynthia L.

Family values according to your definition?? You do know that Clint has multiple marriages under his belt. He also is pro gay-marriage, pro-choice AND pro-ecology according to those that know him well.
I also identify with Clint as an "Eisenhower Republican" which I won't ever apologize for BUT, mostly as a guy who explored his craft fully AND pretty much wrote his own rules.

        August 31, 2012 at 4:14 pm |
    • Caramon

Bloviated? You got that from watching Bill O'Reilly didn't you. Old man? Are you biased against Senior Citizens? At 82, he looks pretty good. It was a funny and enjoyable speech.

      August 31, 2012 at 11:03 am |
      • Cynthia L.

But, Clint's friends were right when they said he talks to invisible people all the time.

        August 31, 2012 at 1:21 pm |
    • Caramon

True that BB. There was a recent local story where 6 teenagers attacked a man out for a run. The reason for the attack, the teens were bored. It is difficult to teach kids to respect others before they are taught to respect themselves. This begins with the family.

Judy ... you're just another disrespectful liberal ingrate, who dismisses and denigrates all the contributions and sacrifices made by the generations of Americans who came before you. • Howard

CLINT DIDN'T HAVE TO TALK TO AN EMPTY CHAIR ... HE COULD HAVE ALSO TALKED TO AN EMPTY WHITE HOUSE ... OR, TO OBAMA'S EMPTY SUIT. THE ONLY REASON OBAMA IS PANDERING TO THE TROOPS, IS BECAUSE HE IS DESPERATE FOR VOTES ... AND WILL SAY, OR DO ANYTHING, TO HOLD ONTO POWER.
OUR MILITARY WILL NOT BE FOOLED BY HIS PANDERING ... THEY KNOW HE IS A TRAITOR, WHO CAN'T BE TRUSTED !!!

It is nice of Oblameo to visit the troops, they still wont vote for him. All he had to do when he controlled both houses was work on creating jobs, but no effort on that. Clint was right if u cant cut it, get out. Oblunder needs to get out lead by example Oblunder live up to your promises, I WONT RUN AGAIN IF DEFICET IS NOT CUT IN HALF, dude u didnt make it

If you actually followed what happens in congress, you'd realize that Mitch McConnel, not Obama, is to blame for the lack of bills passed. What was he said to Gingrich and the rest of his cronies? Oh yeah, "Our immediate goal is to make sure Barack Obama is a one-term president". Read the constitution some time. This man and his followers are traitors to this country.

    "Fact Check"
The LSMs way of holding one party accountable for of a single fact while ignoring the rest of the policy.
The LSMs way of covering one parties blatant lies and misrepresentation of its policy by focusing on a single fact.

The unemployment rate among all vets is 8.6%
The unemployment rate among post 9/11 war vets is 9.2%
The unemployment rate among male vets, ages 18 to 24 is a stunning 29%.

Jobless vets are a national disgrace, yet another dismal legacy of Obama'a failed community leadership.

      • DEcember 2012

LET'S BE SERIOUS. YOU ARE NOT REALLY VOTING FOR MITT ROMNEY. YOU ARE VOTING AGAINST OBAMA.

YOU WOULD VOTE FOR A STAIN ON THE FLOOR IF IT MEANS NOT VOTING FOR OBAMA.

I AM VOTING FOR OBAMA BECAUSE HE STILL HAS A LOT OF WORK TO DO AND I DO NOT TRUST MITT ROMNEY TO DO IT. I MAY NOT AGREE WITH SOME OF THE THINGS HE HAS DONE BUT I AM NOT ONE OF THOSE WHO ARE DISAPPOINTED WITH LOFTY PROMISES MADE. YOU HAVE TO BE EXTREMELY NAIVE TO THINK HE CAN FIX EVERYTHING SO QUICKLY GIVEN THE DAMAGE DONE TO THE ECONOMY.

IN THE END, THIS ELECTION IS NOT REALLY WHAT MATTERS ANYWAY. IT IS THE DYSFUNCTIONAL CONGRESS THAT NEEDS TO GET FIXED ASAP. THAT'S WHERE THE REAL WORK THAT NEED TO BE DONE AND WE AS AMERICANS SHOULD PAY ATTENTION TO.

        August 31, 2012 at 2:22 pm |
      • Caramon

Actually both are true. I am voting against the President because I feel that Keynesian economic policies do not work. The continued belief in removing money from the private sector through taxes does not create jobs. I also believe that the huge increases in the deficit are detrimental to the future. If, in fact, the President had true leadership, he would take responsibility and not continually blame, he would learn to work with both sides of Congress. Ronald Reagan had to do it and so did Bill Clinton.

I am voting for Mitt Romney because I feel he has a decent grasp of how the economy should work. I also believe he will return more to the policies that allowed our country to go through one of the greatest growth periods in history, the 1980s. The economy has a domino effect. First, establish policies that create jobs in the private sector. When more people have jobs, then more people pay taxes. When more people pay taxes instead of receiving tax dollars, the government spends less on welfare. We do not need someone who "feels our pain". We need someone to relieve our pain.

The President's main problem is that he tried to tackle everything at one time during the first 2 years including, energy, the economy, healthcare and so forth. He should have focused on the economy and job creation first. Had he been successful, then the Democrats could very well have maintained control of the House. Then he would have 4 instead of 2 years with complete control. What the President promised and what the President delivered aren't the same thing. Why should I trust him to do what he says in the future.

As far as the party of no as many say. If there was no one to provide a barrier to the increases in spending, what would the deficit be today.

I am not naive to believe that the President could fix everything in 3.5 years. However, I am smart enough to know that his policies have been tried and have failed before. Another four years and we can revisit this same conversation.

        August 31, 2012 at 3:22 pm |
      • DEcember 2012

CARAMON, YOU CANNOT POSSIBLY HAVE IT BOTH WAYS. IF THE PRESIDENT TAKES THE BLAME THEN WHEN IS CONGRESS GOING TO TAKE THE BLAME? THEY HAVE AS MUCH TO DO WITH THIS MESS AND EVEN MORE SO. YOU CAN HAVE YOUR IDEOLOGY BUT IT DOES NOT SEEMS TO BE WORKING IS IT? HOW MANY YEARS OF TAX CUTS ARE WE IN NOW? AND YOU WONDER WHY THE DEFICIT IS GETTING BIGGER?

MITT ROMNEY'S TRACK RECORD SPEAKS OTHERWISE. AT BEST, HE IS NO BETTER THAN OBAMA AT GOVERNING AND THERE IS REALLY VERY LITTLE TO COMPARE THEM WITH SINCE GOVERNING A STATE IS DIFFERENT. WHEN IS HE GOING TO TALK ABOUT HIS SIGNATURE ACHIEVEMENT? IF THE MAN CANNOT BE HONEST ABOUT HIS OWN RECORD THEN I DON'T HAVE MUCH TRUST TO GIVE HIM FOR RUNNING THE COUNTRY.

YOUR CRITICISMS OF THE PRESIDENT CAN BE SUMMED UP ON ONE THING: THE ACA ALSO KNOWN AS OBAMACARE. THIS IS HIS SIGNATURE ACHIEVEMENT. I WOULD HAVE PREFERRED HE WORKED ON THIS LATER WHEN THE ECONOMY HAS STABILIZED BUT I DO NOT DISAGREE WITH IT, JUST THE TIMING. WOULD THINGS HAVE BEEN BETTER OFF IF HE HAS FOCUSED ON THE ECONOMY? PROBABLY, GIVEN AFTER 2010 NOTHING WAS HAPPENING IN CONGRESS.

LET'S BE REAL HERE. AS FAR AS SPENDING GOES, CONGRESS HAS NO PROBLEM IF IT ALIGNS WITH THEIR AGENDA AND BECOME BIPARTISAN ALL OF A SUDDEN. IF IRAN GETS NUKES TOMORROW, YOU BET THERE WILL BE UNLIMITED SPENDING TO START OFF THAT WAR. THE PROBLEM IS, THE PETTINESS AND EXTREMISM HAS GONE BEYOND THE PALE AND THE TEA PARTY IS PARTLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THAT. IT IS TIME FOR REPUBLICAN LEADERSHIP TO REIGN IN THE RADICALS WITHIN THEIR PARTY AND START WORKING WITH THE PRESIDENT, AND IT IS TIME FOR OBAMA TO STOP RESPONDING TO THE PETTINESS WITH THE SAME AND TRY TO BE THE ADULT AND RISE ABOVE IT.

TO BE HONEST, IF MITT ROMNEY CAN BE MORE SPECIFIC ABOUT HIS SOLUTIONS AND REVEAL HIS EXPERIENCES THAT DO NOT NECESSARILY APPEAL OR APPEASE TO HIS BASE, BUT WOULD HELP TO EXPLAIN HIS QUALIFICATIONS LIKE HOW HE SUPPOSEDLY FIXED THE WINTER OLYMPICS AND HIS TERM AS GOVERNOR, THEN I MAY CHANGE MY MIND ABOUT HIM. INSTEAD HE BASED HIS CAMPAIGN ON A BAD ECONOMY AND WHAT WORRIES ME MORE NOW IS THAT HE SEEMS TO BE TAKING IN MORE BUSH PEOPLE INTO HIS CAMP AND WE REALLY DO NOT WANT TO GO BACK TO THOSE YEARS.

        August 31, 2012 at 4:03 pm |
      • Caramon

I would agree that Congress should be more to blame. However, this could be as much true for Bush as for Obama. I believe that the Democrats were smart enough to know that the housing bubble would eventually burst. Considering the warnings, how could they not know. It was a sure way to win the Whitehouse.

The tax cuts will have little effect on the deficit. Expiration of the tax cuts will only bring enough money to eliminate 6 percent of the deficit. Yet, spending continues to grow.

I think Mitt Romney used a number the speakers to talk about hi experiences at Bain, the Olympics and as governor. I would agree that he needs provide more details about his plans.

You realize December, we are almost being civil. Perhaps this is what our representatives need to be.

        August 31, 2012 at 4:37 pm |
      • DEcember 2012

CARAMON, I CHOOSE TO BE CIVIL WHEN SPOKEN IN KIND AND I APOLOGIZE TO YOU FOR SHOWING YOU LESS THAN YOU DESERVED.

THE TAX CUTS DO NOT DO ANYTHING TO IMPROVE THE ECONOMY BUT THAT 6% IS SOMETHING. IF WE ARE GOING TO BE SERIOUS ABOUT DEFICIT REDUCTION AND BALANCING THE BUDGET THEN EVERYTHING SHOULD BE ON THE TABLE, INCLUDING TAXES. I WOULD BE IN FAVOR OF CLOSING TAX LOOPHOLES BUT IF DEEPER SACRIFICES NEED TO BE MADE THEN SO BE IT. REAGAN DID IT. GEORGE BUSH SENIOR DID IT. CLINTON DID IT. BUT REFORM IS THE BETTER WAY TO GO AND IT NEEDS TO BE DONE WITH TAX FAIRNESS IN MIND. WHY DO WAGE EARNERS HAVE TO PAY A HIGHER RATE? IT IS INSANE.

HOPEFULLY WE WILL GET TO KNOW MORE ABOUT MITT ROMNEY AS THINGS GET UNSCRIPTED DURING THE DEBATES AND FORWARD BUT I STILL THINK THE PRESIDENCY IS NOT GOING TO BE THE KEY TO ECONOMIC RECOVERY SO THE REAL BUSINESS STARTS WITH CONGRESS. WHAT BOTHERS ME ABOUT MITT ROMNEY IS HIS POSITIONS ON FOREIGN POLICY AND THE SURGE IN NEOCON CHICKEN HAWKS IN CAMP. I REPEAT, WE DO NOT NEED TO GO BACK TO THE BUSH YEARS. THE CURRENT METHODS OF USING MORE INTELLIGENCE INSTEAD OF INSURGENCY IS THE WAY TO GO TO COMBAT TERRORISM.

If after Obama had been elected, and the Republicans in Congress and in the Senate had recognized it was the majority vote of the American people that he be President, if instead of throwing a tantrum, had they honesty looked at the needs of our country instead of their party, the American people might have recognized that maybe after a time of joint effort during a needed recovery leading to reforms that were helpful to the majority of the citizens, people would consider them worthy enough to vote for. But, they didn't choose that path. The Tea Party insisted they had lost because their candidate was not conservative enough and the Republican Party young guns and some old fool bulls thinking that they could use Tea Party anger to their advantage, let their party, and their responsibility to the citizens who voted Obama in – down.
Will I ever vote Republican again?? I can't foresee that decision. Would I keep an open mind? Only if they give me reason to think they've learned some hard lessons of governing. I will vote Obama this time because he has honesty tried to reach across party lines in my opinion, to only have his hand slapped away. And, considering the Congress has a 10% approval rating from the citizens of this country, I can see I am not the only one that thinks this way.

Cynthia L. When did Pres.Obama try to reach across party lines, was it when he told the republicans , sit down shut up I'm President, or was it during the Healthcare debate when the dem and the Pres. locked the republicans out of the debate and told them you have nothing to contribute, or was it when he told the republicans, my way or the highway, or was it in the LAST hour of avoiding a shutdown of the government, I will blame you for everything.

After the President first came into office and invited the Republican leadership to a first time, face-to-face event, they said, "NO". And, they continued to say NO-NO-NO-NO-NO-to everything. American has given the Republicans a vote of no confidence. Deal with it.
