President responds to killing of U.S. ambassador to Libya

Statement by the President on the Attack in Benghazi

I strongly condemn the outrageous attack on our diplomatic facility in Benghazi, which took the lives of four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens. Right now, the American people have the families of those we lost in our thoughts and prayers. They exemplified America's commitment to freedom, justice, and partnership with nations and people around the globe, and stand in stark contrast to those who callously took their lives.
I have directed my Administration to provide all necessary resources to support the security of our personnel in Libya, and to increase security at our diplomatic posts around the globe. While the United States rejects efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others, we must all unequivocally oppose the kind of senseless violence that took the lives of these public servants.
On a personal note, Chris was a courageous and exemplary representative of the United States. Throughout the Libyan revolution, he selflessly served our country and the Libyan people at our mission in Benghazi. As Ambassador in Tripoli, he has supported Libya's transition to democracy. His legacy will endure wherever human beings reach for liberty and justice. I am profoundly grateful for his service to my Administration, and deeply saddened by this loss.
The brave Americans we lost represent the extraordinary service and sacrifices that our civilians make every day around the globe. As we stand united with their families, let us now redouble our own efforts to carry their work forward.

The Romney/right winger answer would to invade Libya and Egypt, shoot any protesters left and round up a bunch of extremists till they find the actual killers/instigators and kill them. So, we would be at war with Libya, Egypt and, if the GOP militarists had their way, we would also attack Syria and Iran. Fortunalely, the GOP is not in charge. Where is patriotism in supporting the US government in handling the matter in the best way possible? How many unfunded wars do you want? How huge an increase in armed forces can we afford? Extremism on either side is not what foreign policy is about. Religious extremism on the part of this Calfornia nut and extremist groups among Muslims caused this whole thing. reasoned diplomacy and carefully considered responses are needed now, not political rhetoric.

The Arabs do not like the Americans, you know that very well. After all the dead men died in Libya, the country
the Americans and Europeans evaded to remove its leader from power in the name of spreading democracy.
You want to blame Obama for that, you and republicans forgot about a year ago why Obama could not send
military there, it was a weakness, you all claimed then, now the consequence of helping those who do not like
is the result of this tragedy today. You want to help Syria, you want to invade Iran in the name deterring its
nuclear ambition, sooner or later it will be different thing. Iraq is a vivid example of American deceit to wage
      war against other nations.

American deciet, what r u a commie ??? these countries keep asking for our help (our money) and your boy Oblunder keeps writing them a check. Oblameo is so lame and will never admit he is too blame for any of his blunders, which by most peoples count are now in the 1000s u would have to be an idiot to think Oblunder cares about u or America,
Wise up or u can kiss America goodbye

And do you think there was no one of the same title under the prior administration or the next? So what are you saying, that CNN made up the WMD's and cost us $4T? We should get our money back from them I guess.

so lets see romney's check now includes going to war with libya, while this event was horrible we should not just start a war because of it, the last two haven't turned out so well for us

    • jeanniem

republican morons would like nothing more than to start another war we can't pay for. You can bet none of their sons or daughters will be deplored. That's left for you commoner's. mitt romney now thinks is going to act presidential and criticize the real president. Well it won't work. The one point bounce you got after the rnc convention is all you will get. you will never be president.

I greatly appreciate Romney and Priebus on 9/11 attacking Obama over an embassy apologizing for the incitement before the violence occurred in Egypt.

  7. GOPisGreedOverPeople

The GOP solution: Start a war with (insert country here) totally unfunded of course. Then get the poor people to fight/die in the war while giving the rich people "no bid contracts". Thus killing two GOP birds with one stone. Then use that country's resources (oil) to pay for the war. And when the war is over, that country will sell us cheap resources (oil)!!!!!!! Just like in Iraq!!!!!!! Oh wait........never mind.

MITT ROMNEY IN A TYPICAL OPPORTUNISTIC SPEECH STATED THAT THE DIPLOMATS IN EGYPT SCREWED UP FOR BEING... WELL DIPLOMATIC. HE THEN GOES ON TO JABBER THAT IT IS SOMEHOW OBAMA'S FAULT. HE GOES ON TO DEFEND THE OFFENDING YOUTUBE VIDEO AS A FORM A FREEDOM OF SPEECH. SO HOW MANY MORE KORAN BURNINGS AND MOHAMMAD CARICATURES BEFORE WE REALIZE IT IS NEVER THAT SIMPLE? 9/11 SURE BRINGS OUT THE LUNATICS ON BOTH SIDES.

SO WHAT NOW 'PRESIDENT' ROMNEY? MILITARY STRIKES IN LIBYA AND EGYPT? MUST BE NICE BEING ARMCHAIR QUARTERBACK. STAY CLASSY MITT.

For all those who think that military power is the answer to this or any of the other situations faced by our nation I would sugets you go and visit your local VA hospital and if you are still so sanguine after that go see your local recruter. Bullets go both ways and they do tend to give a person a bit of a more realistic perspective on the world.

Although I generally disagree with the current administration, I do not think his speech had the tone of an apology. He condemned the attacks in the first sentence. For now, that suffices. What is important are the actions the administration will take afterward including what security will be added to protect American lives against future attacks. How will he try to work with Libyan leadership to prevent future attacks? Egypt, Libya, Iran and Syria are all powder kegs and able to blow up anytime. I guess we will have to wait and see.

I AM STARTING TO THINK THAT THE ATTACK IN LIBYA HAS LITTLE TO DO WITH THE PROTESTS IN EGYPT OTHER THAN THE FACT THEY BOTH OCCURRED IN OR NEAR AN AMERICAN EMBASSY. WE SHOULD DEFINITELY NEED TO LOOK AT THIS MORE INTELLIGENTLY AND NOT LET THE CHICKEN HAWKS PUSH US INTO ANOTHER WAR NEEDLESSLY. AS WE SPEAK, DRONES ARE FLYING IN THE SKIES OF BENGHAZI AND SECURITY TROOPS WILL BE ON THE GROUND. REALISTICALLY SPEAKING, NOBODY SHOULD BE ASSUMING THIS WILL BLOW OVER ANYTIME SOON AND THERE WILL BE A LOT OF WORK TO BE DONE TO GET JUSTICE FOR OUR FALLEN AND EASE DIPLOMATIC TENSIONS.

I WOULD ASK WHERE WERE THE MARINES THAT ARE NORMALLY ASSIGNED TO ALL EMBASSY'S THRU OUT THE WORLD. AN EMBASSY IS US SOIL. WHAT HAPPENED TO ALL OF THE CIVILIANS WORKING FOR THE EMBASSY.

During the first Dessert Storm when the US joined UN forces to remove Iraq from Kuwait, Sadam began firing into Israel. The purpose, of course, was to have Israel respond and gain support from neighboring countries. Israel did not respond at the request of George Bush. Therefore Iraq was driven out of Kuwait.

Blowing up a random city in Libya is a bad idea. What city would you go after and who would you hit? The response to such an attack would be amplified greatly by unity among the Muslim community. Yes, I agree that those who attacked the embassy should be caught and punished. Even if it requires military action. But you don't randomly drop a bomb.

As I stated earlier, I do not agree with the President on most things. Here, I will need to wait and see his actions before criticizing.
