Obama vs. Bush, battle of the bilats

New York (CNN) - President Barack Obama's decision not hold any bilateral meetings with world leaders while in New York to address the United Nations General Assembly is a departure from the last incumbent president to run for re-election.

In 2004, while in an election fight with Sen. John Kerry, President George W. Bush held meetings with leaders from Iraq, Japan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.

White House press secretary Jay Carney defended the president on Monday, saying he has held "extensive consultations with world leaders, including the leaders of Egypt, Israel, Yemen, Turkey, Libya."

"Those consultations will continue, not just with leaders in the region, but with leaders around the world. It is part of the job of being president that that be the case, and he will certainly encounter many leaders tonight in New York as well as tomorrow," Carney said.

By avoiding meetings with world leaders the president sidesteps any inadvertent news-making moments. And if Obama were to take a meeting with one ally, that would undoubtedly open the door to other requests. Therefore the president has left the one-on-ones to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who will meet with the leaders from Pakistan, Libya, Afghanistan and Egypt among others.

This is further evidence that Obama's only strength and his only focus is in getting elected. He was elected in 2008 based on change and progress that never happened (at least not positive change, it is a much uglier political climate than it has been in generations). He has absolutely failed on all the most important issues of his presidency. Now he is completely focused on getting reelected with little regard to doing his job as president. How can we as a nation reward such narcissistic ambition?

Obama has done a great job as president. He prevented us from going into another great depression.

The Republicans left his with an economy in crisis and two wars and now they are complaining that he did not clean it up fast enough. They have sabotaged the economic recovery by refusing to pass his jobs bill in congress. This would have created over 1 million new jobs.

Unlike Mitt Robme who does not worry about 47% of Americans, Obama cares about ALL Americans.

      Latinos for Obama 2012

Not all Latinos are fooled by honey covered words and flashy smiles.

Obama really has done nothing for the country. He did not lead us out of a depression nor a recession for that matter as by all accounts I've read the bailouts that were handed to the large companies did that (and if I remember that was the work of many politicians both dem and rep).

As for the jobs bill - if you remember Obama did have a 11billion (or something) emergency job bill go through to which he handed the majority of the money to companies that endorsed dem elections, and of those companies a majority actually keep the money and didn't hire new employees at all.

As for Mitt, yes he was a business tycoon and made, well business decisions. At least he owns up to them. He owns up to his history (unlink Obama saying he's from a lacking childhood but wasn't).

Obama ran on a campaign of Change - change he knew he couldn't manifest, and hasn't. That type of campaign is a one-shot thing in my book. As Mitt is running against Obama I will vote for him - better of two evils.

Obama prevented cyborgs from Neptune from invading the earth. It's easy to make up a thing that didn't happen and say that Obama prevented it. That doesn't make it true.

        Well Honestly,
Obama's most recent Brillant Statement is We can't Change Washington from the inside. Along with The Private Sector is doing fine, to You didn't build that. For 4 years now we haven't had a Budget. Why? Ronald Reagan got things done and he had a Democrat Congress. A President has to lead. Obama has no capacity to lead! A clue. Get rid of him ! End of story.

Talking point #1 – Obama prevented us from going into a depression – Can't prove it – but is sounds great!
Talking oint #2 – Keep class warfare a front burner issue
Talking Point #3 – Jab Romney on his business success at every opportunity and demonize it.
Taking point #4 – Most important of all - keep the conversation on anything but jobs and the economy.

Who made up something that isnt true? This country was in a Recession and ALMOST in a Depression. What Kool-Aid are you drinking? Thats like saying "Bush didnt start the Iraq War, it was Bin Laden," THAT STATEMENT ISNT TRUE.

Obama did help prevent the Recession, Republicans claiming to forget that they made this country bleed in red ink, is the issue

hey 49'r, so you feel that the only requirements of being a great leader is to say "he did better than the prez before him? Thats a very subjective standard. So you are ok with a prez who hasnt offered a budget, has the highest unemployment klevels as any prez in history – yeah I know you & the prez blame it on Bush, the arab spring, protests gone wild, lunar eclipses & his dog eat his homework among the 100 excuses of why he hasnt done anything. This article just described an American Prez who doesnt associate with world leaders, who doesnt associate with Americans, who IF HE WORKS A FULL DAY is off by 5pm to be home with the kiddos – & you call that leadership? Scary thought. There are about 40 days left before the election – let's watch the daily WH report & count the days he spends an 8 hour work day being prez? Anyone on the over under? I have 2

Its funny how you say his jobs bill would have created 1 million new when his stimulous package was supose to prevent the unemployment numbers to not get over 8% and we have been over 8% for close to if not over 40 months. President Obama also had both the house and senate when he got elected and he wasn't able to pass just about anything but his healthcare bill. In the last 3 years we havent passed a budget and the Presidents last budget recevived 0 yes votes from democrats. You cant blame republicans for that can you? President a Obama is a joke...

Dec – you can be as sarcastic as you like, but it doesn't change the fact that O has failed to show leadership qualities necessary to be the leader of the greatest nation on earth. Despite his pleadings to give him another 4 years because it wasn't his fault, it was his fault & America can't afford to "trust" that he'll change his ways this time around. Avote for romney is simply a vote against Obama.

I remind you if the President flew to meet all these world leaders we would hear november crying about his travel expenses.

Listen the president not only has a phone, he has Skype and can place a conference call. If I remember rightly the Middle East was already in shambles when he took office...thanks to 2 unfunded and basically ill-advised wars for non-existant WMD... wars that have cost trillions of dollars, thousands of lives, left wounded many our young men and women in the service. Basically therefore we have experienced a lot of "bumps in the road" before this president....which you seem to not have previously taken seriously.

I would much rather have a calm and steady hand at the helm of the "ship of state".... than a couple of fools who pop off about what they would do without being privy to all the facts...or a repeat performance with wannabes-George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. Heaven knows we don't need to go there again. We absolutely don't need leaders beholden, bought and paid for by war-profiteering corporations that caused the last mess.

Obama can place a Conference Call? Without his Teleprompter? The Hell you Beller. Hahaha.

      • jean2009

I would suggest going online for a Google Image Search using two words "Romney teleprompter" you will find over 400,000 images of Romney using a teleprompter...as a matter of fact Romney used a teleprompter today at the Clinton Global Initiative Conference.

And YuckyTea Drinker those people you named have worked to clean up the mess left by Bush & Cheney.
The problems we have been having are due to plans initiated from 2001-2007.

Ah... I do get out often and have been working the Obama Campaign.

        September 25, 2012 at 4:57 pm |
      • uncdig

Jean – this is your defense for a lack of leadership – you sound like Obama – an excuse for everything. Excuses don't work – results are what matter.. Go ahead a defend the lack of leadership by blaming others. The leader of the US does't lead by telephone. He doesn't lead by working less than a 9-5 schedule, he doesn't lead in times of crisis by going on the hollywood talk show scene. He doesn't lie to Americans, he doesn't make excuses, he doesnt pit American vs American – he sucks it up & gets things done. He could buy & read almost any leadership how to book & do better than he has.

He is right the only thing Obama ever did was give the order to Get Bin Laden, which any sitting ppresident would have given the order. The Middle east is in a shambles, China is walking all over us. Iran is thumbing their nose at us, and what does Obama do, goes on the hen club show called the view, with a bunch of washed up women from the entertainment world, instead of meeting with world leaders. He caleed the death of our ambassador a bump in the road, Obama a lousy President, with no class, no brains, and a coward to boot. I give Obama a F in all areas.

    Romney /Ryan 2012.

It wasn't like he gave the order, it was more like they couldn't take out bin laden unless they got his approval.
Obama set it up that way so he could take the credit for any operation that turned out good press.

Clinton had the first opportunity! Problem is when talking about Bin Laden, there seems to be serious memory loss on the left about Clinton!. Bush is hammered but Clinton is not. I wonder why. Yet under Clinton the U.S.S Cole was attacked, The World Trade Center was first attacked, and US embassies in Africa were attacked. Yet all Ihear is what Bush did not do. obama gave the order to kill bin ladin over the objections of most advisors who knew the ramifications of doing this in Pakistan would be and as a result of this the Pakistan govt threw us out of their country...told us to evacuate our bases there. This caused havoc in suppling the Afgan(which we are now losing due to poor leadership)war and also created more of a mess in Pakistan. obama did this to score political points at a time when he was supporting the overthrow of leaders in Egypt and Libya...and that of course is blowing up in our faces. We knew where bin laden was and had for years. obama is a cheap political opportunist who cares only for his own narcissistic power and aclaim, he is not a man with an American brain and he is not a leader and a problem solver, his success has been only in his own rise to power nothing more. We need a real problem solver and a president with an American brain.

Bush gave up on doing the job. Gave up looking for bin Laden in Afghanistan...everyone of us knew bin Laden wasn't and had never been in Iraq. But Oh those War Profiteers they need to fight big wars that are not a heavy slog like Afghanistan..

We will never know for certain what another president might have...would da!, could da!...should da!. We do however know the man who promised the American people in 2008 that he would do everything in his power to get bin Laden.....DID!

I can see the jealousy over his deed has you green with envy.

we knew where bin laden was in 2008 at that time no one wanted to cause a problem with Pakistan because we needed the bases in that country to fight the Afghan war...save American lives....o'fool did this for political gain against almost all of the advisors. This is DC insider knowledge.

I am much better off since Obama became President. He conveys to me that he is trying to help Americans cope with the problems we have. I think people are blaming the president for their personal failings instead of realizing that he is only one man trying to relieve the anger and disappointment of many. Many people don't even know what the responsibilities of the President are and that he cannot make many decisions on his own. Americans have always expected a quick fix and when they don't get it they go running of to someone who makes them feel better and makes promises to do what the current President hasn't. Well, I have seen what the Republican presidents do and I prefer someone else. Honestly, getting my son out of Iraq and Afghanistan will do. I know all about the Republican war machine and Romney will have it going full force if he is in office.

I suppose it's true that Romney doesn't need a baby sitter, just a whole army of spindoctors. W, though, was very happy to have his baby sitters when he was almost assassinated by a partially chewed pretzel. The reality is Congress is the major problem here, but it's easier to blame one guy than 500. Especially when it's your 250 that are creating the gridlock. That's fine though. A wave of blue will wash over DC and we'll have prosperity for the next long while. Hopefully the Reps give Obama more than a week to fix the world before they start clamoring for his head again (Romney began campaigning a week into Obama's presidency by claiming his administration's policies failed even though the man had barely moved his clothes into the White House. It was on a Fox interview, if you can remember that far back, Reps. I know how you feel about History and Science...)
