Plouffe questions Romney's disavowal of "47%" remarks

,

In brief comments to reporters on Friday, White House Senior Adviser David Plouffe questioned the credibility of Mitt Romney’s most recent attempts to distance himself from controversial comments delivered at a private fundraiser last May.

“I think he said they were inelegant,” Plouffe said, referring to Romney’s initial reaction to recordings of his “47%” comments. “There is no elegant way to attack half the country, say they’re victims, say they won’t take responsibility. These are teachers. These are veterans. These are seniors. And the most important thing is his policies reflect that approach and that disdain because his entire economic philosophy is geared toward the very wealthy and burdening the middle class.”

In an interview with Fox News on Thursday, Romney tried to further distance himself from the remarks, telling Sean Hannity his comments were “completely wrong,” despite having defended his meaning at a press conference held the day after the tapes from the fundraiser were made public.

Noting how much time had passed since Romney originally delivered the remarks and his recent attempts to walk away from them, Plouffe added that the GOP nominee’s most recent disavowal should be viewed with some skepticism.

“I would take with a huge grain of salt trying to clean something up five months after you’ve said it for the first time and after you doubled down on it," Plouffe said.

I disavow Romney's disavowal of his remarks.
Whta Romney did yesterday was quick and in a hurry crawl through the gaping hole that President Obama mercifully left him by not bringing up that 47% remark (and others) during the debate. Romney saw the opportunity to quickly attempt take back what cannot be taken back so as to minimize the possiblity of the comment being brought up in the 2nd debate by the President. That is all.
No one, I repeat, NO ONE who stands by such a comment for as long as he did (five months in private and one month in public) has any remorse or regrets about said statements.
Americans (fortunately and due to the Republican belief that no one is paying attention to their outrageous behavior) are on to people like Romney who think that they can say one thing and do another. Or say two things today, and two other things tomorrow.
Accountability will be the name of the game November 6th. They've gone too far for too long.
    Enough.
    Obama 2012.

SWITCH to make the sale, seeing that compassion sells! Mitt after defending and standing by his 47% comment for 2 weeks not says he was 'completely wrong' and portrays himself as a life long champion of the 100% .
I don't doubt that Mitt Romney (nor Paul Ryan) is a good husband, or fathers/grandfather or church member. I don't doubt his compassion or empathy within that personal circle of community but it is a very small circle indeed.
There is a visible, almost Jekyll & Hyde change verbally and in his behavior in both business and politics when operating outside that circle. At Bain shutting down US factories & shipping good US jobs to Chinese sweat shops. His solution for other children and college is not Pell grants which his budget would cut but 'borrow from your parents find a cheaper college while is own sons have a 100 million dollar trust fund. In business, profit by any means. In politics, whatever position will profit his election. He lacks the society wide compassion that other wealthy Presidents such as FDR or JFK felt for ALL Americans and especially the older, infirm, and less fortunate AND which their lives and efforts reflected in toto...not just 38 days out from an election...

I totally agree with you. This seems to be Romney campaign strategy. Make offensive, outlandish comments that sting this group or that group, and then try to make amends for it later when he gets caught. He flip flops on the key social and economic issues. He says that a large tax cut is necessary to grow the economy and then retreats. He guarantees that he will create 12MM jobs, reduce the deficit, increase defense spending by $2T over 10 years, make us energy independent by the end of his second term...and on, and on....He is an elitist, self-indulgent, pompous blowhard who did nothing for Massachusetts except the one thing that he has run from...healthcare. His "party" has blocked the Farm Bill, to help farmers who are going bankrupt because of the drought; they blocked the Veterans Bill that would help them and their families; they blocked the Jobs Bill that would create 1MM infrastructure jobs. Hey, Obama is far from perfect. I don't like some of his policies, but Romney and his pit bull VP choice are far worse. Our economy is making progress...very slowly...but it is..

If you're the warrior for accountability, where is the accountability for our current president? He does nothing when our flags are being burned and our ambassador murdered and dragged through the streets?? Be careful with your self-righteous comments – we have much bigger problems than this.

      October 5, 2012 at 3:54 pm |
      • Rick

As usual Repubs distort the truth, the ambassador was not 'dragged through the streets' he died of smoke inhalation in the embassy fire. hat would you expect him to do, declare war on a mob? That would be really wise. You are a self-righteous imbecile Romney seems ideal for you but not for everyone.

      • freedom

@ Rick You don't know your facts. The Ambassador was indeed tortured, murdered, and dragged throught the streets, and the Obama administration lied to the American people, and didn't even address us as a nation when our flags and embassies were being burned in 20 countries. That is not a leader. And what kind of American president wouldn't have extra security at our embassies in vulnerable nations on 9/11 !!!???

Funny, it seems to be important to those 47%.. It was important enough for Flipper to do his usual back track. But lemme guess....you'd rather discuss Rev Wright......

        October 5, 2012 at 4:56 pm |
      • freedom

@ghost Romney was man enough to acknowledge the remark sounded bad. As president, he of course would be governing 100% of our nation. This president can't even acknowledge like a man that he didn't perform well in the debate. He's screaming from a podium that it's everyone else's fault that he wasn't prepared. Not a good leader. And if you want to discuss Rev. Wright – absolutely – another very disturbing aspect of Obama's make-up and how he views our nation – he sees it divided and has a huge chip on his shoulder that the whole country is expected to carry. He claimed he was the big messiah unifier – do you see unity on these blogs??

Freedom is another misinformed right-wing idiot. Rather than ask those questions, Freedom should tell us what the President should have done. As Romney and all other Republicans have shown, it's easy to criticize but difficult to offer sensible solutions.

        October 5, 2012 at 8:42 pm |
      • freedom

@Ken First of all, why do democrats like to call people names when they don't agree with them?? It's ineffective. You ask what should Obama have done? First of all – lead. He should have been proactive on 9/11 to protect our embassies in the more vulnerable countries in the world. Secondly, he should have attended intel briefings – which all commanders-in-chief do- because it is the first priortiy of a president of the US to protect our nation. Thirdly, if he had been attending the briefings, he would have known that requests had been made from Libya for assistance due to threats. He could have prevented the horrific acts that happened there. And, finally, he should have addressed the American people when our flags were being burned and our dignitaries murdered – there was unrest – he is the leader – he is supposed to address the nation during a crisis. Obama is not a leader. I don't know what he is, but he shouldn't be president of this great country.

REGARDING OBAMA'S INSTANT, FAKE JOBS NUMBERS ...
As Josef Stalin once said, "it's not the votes that count, it who counts the votes" that really matters. Just forget for a moment that two of the leading economists for the Bureau of Labor Statistics happen to be big Obama contributors.

TO ALL YOU OBAMA STOOGES ... Your blind devotion to 'Dear Leader' ... your Fuhrer, is touching ... but it's time for you to leave the Obama cult. Defending Obama, who lost, and who can't loose like a good sport, just makes you ALL look like sore loosers. Obama was given a chance ... and, in the past 4 years, he has nearly destroyed America. NOW, it's time for Barack and Michelle to abdicate their throne, so Mitt Romney can begin repairing the excessive damage caused by Obama's terrible policies. Good bye Barack, Michelle, Nancy, Harry, Jarret, and Axelrod, and all the unelected czars ... and, GOOD RIDDANCE TO YOU ALL ... Actually Howard, it has been the Republicans who have tried their best to distroy this country. The President and, with zero help from Republicans, saved us from near depression caused by Republican policies while Republican's only goal was to stop President Obama at any cost.

Howard, I voted for McCain in 2008, but shortly after that I stopped listening to Fox News. Try this: Turn off any news broadcast owned by Rupert Murdoch while also exercising some inner control over your base emotions. Wait a few weeks while you allow this change in habit to have its good effect on your soul. Then on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November, vote for the guy who got us out of Iraq, is getting us out of Afghanistan, has kept interest rates at historic lows longer than any other President, has challenged the banks to control their greed, is reducing unemployment and guiding the entire global economy carefully back from the abyss of total meltdown, despite Congress' best efforts to thwart every good effort in any direction.

You will wonder, as I do now, why we EVER voted Republican. (It was because Republicans used to be the good guys, but they are not good now; they are just spoiled, greedy, mean-spirited, power-hungry, egotistical, whining, nattering nabobs of negativism and you will recognize the truth too if you just give yourself a chance. Turn Fox off!)

Howard, I think this is more important than the 47%. I would like to see Mr Romney ask the President, " How did China get the plans to our fighter jets? And why does the UN have signs on our National Parks? Does the President plan on signing the UN Arms Act that will take the guns away from ALL Americans? I believe these QUESTIONS ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE STATE OF THE ECONOMY.

Actually, its the republicans who are acting like the nazis. Do i even have to point out to you, that the nazi's were right wingers and not the left. Their tactics were Voter suppression through disenfranchisement and threats, blaming the minorities for all the problems in the country and refusing a rational discussion.of issues taking a my way or highway route. Big business leaders around the world adored them. Oh, and best of all, Hitler went up to the stage and repeatedly lied and the people bought it as truth. Unfortunately, this is what is going on in this country right now. God Bless and Help America..

By now it is pretty obvious that Romney, while slamming Obama on just any subject, has himself declared to support policies that are just like Obama's. He thinks he can be on both sides of a fence! He was against Obamacare before he declared he will keep parts of it. He was against 47% of americans because they are losers in his eyes, before he declared that he wants to help people because they are hurting. He was against the Dream Act before he declared that he will adopt a version of the Dream Act. He ran for Governor of MA as a Pro-Choice, before he declared himself to be pro-life. LOL, if by now people don't see who this guy is, they deserve him !

POTUS was correct in NOT bringing up the 47% statement. It would have given Romney an opportunity to apololie in front of a national audience without any questioning. By not doing it, Romney had to run to HIS network, and the apology looks insincere because he wouldn't do it on a "REAL" network.

I believe there is a difference between what a candidate states is their goal (not a promise) and what can actually be delivered with a two party system (not a dictatorship).

But what a proposed candidate like Romney said in a closed room to contributors who are basically buying and paying for him to fulfill their wishes if elected....yep! He feels exactly that way about the 47% and meant exactly what he said. He can prattle all he wants to about caring about the 100% of the people...but as the old saying goes "its too late the horse is already out of the barn"

As an old lady of 77 who has voted in each election since old enough to vote, and who has raised two sons....I can tell you...This man has serious flaws of character that have shown themselves time and time again as not being presidential material. He just doesn't man up when caught.

How many dogs do we need to have chained on the roof of a car, or a person with a military deferment who protests FOR others to fight and die instead of just thanking his lucky stars and keeping quiet, or a bully who cuts another student's hair, the man who has stated "he likes being able to fire people".REALLY! What kind of a twisted twit likes firing people? ..investing in a Chinese company that used slave labor ...to build his bottom line...unwilling to show his tax returns probably because he was one of those who took amnesty for evading American taxes...not willing to invest his money in America and keeps it in taax havens like Bermuda and the Caymens....and the flip flop after flip flop on every issue once it is found he was obviously originally on the wrong side of that issue....look at his first touting Romneycare and now disavowing Romneycare because it is not what his funding masters want...".I was for it before I was against it" anything to cover his behind.

Really, this is not presidential material, this is a grown spoiled rich boy with no moral compass that wants a toy of power. You are entitled to your opinion..but that is my honest assessment of Mitt Romney. In all my years I have never seen a candidate that scared me more.

BOMBSHELL: Obama.com Owned by Bundler in Shanghai with Business Ties to Chinese Government

In an explosive report set to send shockwaves through official Washington, the Government Accountability Institute (GAI) released a 108-page GAI investigation into the threat of foreign and fraudulent Internet campaign donations in U.S. federal elections.

Visit campaignfundingrisks.com to download the full report.

An advance copy of the bombshell report reveals that the Obama.com website is not owned by the president’s campaign but rather by Obama bundler Robert Roche, a U.S. citizen living in Shanghai, China. Roche is the chairman of a Chinese infomercial company, Acorn International, with ties to state-controlled banks that allow it to “gain revenue through credit card transactions with Chinese banks.”

      There’s more.

The unusual Obama.com website redirects traffic directly to a donation page on the Obama campaign’s official website, my.barackobama.com, which does not require donors tob enter their credit card security code, thereby increasing the likelihood of foreign or fraudulent donations. The website is managed by a small web development firm, Wicked Global, in Maine. One of Wicked Global’s employees, Greg Dorr, lists on his LinkedIn page his additional employment with Peace Action Maine and Maine Voices for Palestinian Rights. According to the GAI report, 68 percent of all Internet traffic to Obama.com comes from foreign visitors. According to the GAI report, 68 percent of all Internet traffic to Obama.com comes from foreign visitors.

YEAH, I QUESTION CHAMELEON ROMNEY'S DISAVOWAL TOO!!! I think it's just a PREEMPTIVE STRIKE before the next debate. If President Obama brings up the 47% Chameleon Romney will ask him IF HE LISTENS TO THE NEWS...He simply mis-spoke in his meeting in Florida. HE HAS ALWAYS BEEN FOR 100% OF AMERICANS!!! I WOULD ASK HIM TO DESCRIBE HIS CARE FOR 100% OF AMERICANS IN TERMS OF HIS PLANNED POLICIES. WHAT EXACTLY DOES HE MEAN? I don't think President Obama should let this Chameleon throw him in the next two debates...especially when we see the Chameleon's HANDLERS COME OUT AND CORRECT HIS LIZZARD TONGUE AFTER THE DEBATES.

Talk about a misinformation, Romney was all over the misinformation playbook.
Now Howard, one area was pretty much dissed and that was GREEN ENERGY. Of course, we were waiting for Romney to bring up Solyndra. BUT, I was sorry to see Obama not be forthcoming of the facts about the 90 Billion to GREEN ENERGY so I WILL HIGHLIGHT THEM HERE -
ONLY 3 of 33 companies that rec'd loans in green technologies have failed, representing LESS THAN 2% of money budgeted.
A broad array of grants, loans and demonstration projects aimed at NOT ONLY UPGRADING AND MODERNIZING the aging OVER-STRESSED ENERGY GRID around the country, it has been targeted to improving MASS TRANSIT, cleaner more efficient cars, weatherizing older buildings to construction of power plants capable of capturing and storing greenhouse gases.
Mitt stating in his debate that, "I will go on USING CLEAN COAL." CLEAN COAL?? THERE AIN"T NO SUCH THING. That technology has not been developed as of yet. Guess, he needed to keep the KOCH BROTHERS happy with that one.
How sweet of Mitt to use the coal miners as a backdrop for his campaign event in which ALL WERE REQUIRED TO SHOW UP WITHOUT PAY by the coal company. Also, Republicans like to diss the unions for taking donations out of paychecks but don't say anything about this particuliar coal company, who is NOT unionized, taking deductions from ALL the folks' paychecks for campaign donations to policial races around the country that are raising cash for Republicans and personally diss the employee if they haven't donated even more of their AUTOMATIC DEDUCTION.
If the Republicans are going to harass people over VOTER FRAUD AND UNION SUPPORT FOR POLITICAL CAMPAIGNS – then they ought to LOOK AT THEIR OWN PARTY'S PARTICIPATION IN COMMITTING THE SAME ACTS and lying about it.
I'd rather see BIG BIRD on the Republican ticket than Mitt.

Just TWO WEEKS AGO, the Chairman of the FED, said that we have to print, and add 40 Billion dollars a month to the economy, due to the 'GRAVE' jobs numbers ... and, now 2 days after Romney made jobs the center piece of the debate ... where he creamed Obama ... abra kadabra, Obama instantly increases jobs by a whopping 3/10 of a percent ... does anybody really believe this Obama B.S. ???

      October 5, 2012 at 6:58 pm |

We all knew that it was just only matter of time with job increases month after month for 30 straight months ...and the fact that the rate had set at 8.1% for 3 months, with employment numbers being adjusted continually up with each new report for the previous 2 or 3 months that it would soon drop below 8 % and it did to 7.8%...So Howard again you prove you can't deal with facts, timelines and real time numbers.

I think the true test of a person's character is what they do or say when they think nobody is watching or listening. If that is true, then the secretely taped video of Romney's 47% comments was a glimpse into who the "real" Mitt Romney is. It wasn't a pretty picture.

But then again...Mitt has proven that he will say anything, hasn't any qualms about lying (or flip-flopping) and wouldn't know the truth if it kicked him.

According to his current disavowing his 47% comment...you can take that one or two ways. Either he was lying to those rich contributors in that closed door room, or he is lying to the American people now. Raise of hand of how many think he was lying to the people, in that closed room, who have bought and paid for him.

Let's see where do you start...., ahhh...., My Mom was a single Mom we didn't have much." I guess making 72-78000 a year in 1972 wasn't that much?
Mom had a good job, no a great job, with provided health insurance she was fighting over a Co Pay.

"I remember when he was driving a car with a rusted out bottom."
That's because we were living in a 1/4 million dollar house in Chicago and Michelle making in excess of $150,000 a year, yep struggling. After he became state Senator and the Hospital was granted in excess of 3 million dollars she was given a raise (can anyone say Money Laundering) to over 239,000 dollars.. a year.

You see CNNITES and Obama has made up so many lies and they have made the paper Mache' President and what you saw was a man who was an empty shirt, who knows nothing about what it takes to be a leader "The United States will lead from behind." That's called "following" dumb***

What about Gramps who's lap Obama was dumped in dropped him into Commuunista Frank Marshall Davis To be his mentor.

What you saw at the debate was the reall Obama, an empty suit, ready to be filled by the crud of the left wing radicals like Uncle Frank, Clowerd and Piven and Sal Alinsky.
Mixed with a bag of tricks from Andrew Stern, and Terrorist William "Wild Bill" Ayers.

If he ever said anything as remotely offensive to half the nation as what Romney said, he would be held accountable for it just as people are now holding Mitt Romney accountable for his words. Romney can apologize all he wants but how many people are foolish enough to believe that an apology at this point is sincere much less that his opinion has somehow changed.

Romney's statement of the 47 percend in that secretly recorded tape was an examiation of fact about the electroite, nothing more nothing less. And many of the posts here are proving it beyond any doubt. As far as the debate is concerned, Obama brought his A game, Romney brought his A game. That is the best Obama will do as he has passed on too many breifings over the last 4 years and it showed. Obama is not dis honost, he is just incompanant. The Budget deficit again this year is over a Trillion dollars. Why does any defend him??

Romney does not care about the 47%. The only reason he said he was wrong is because he got caught.

It looks like the uptick in debate performance combined with the comment from Dominican....tells us that Mitt wanted to keep the debate poll bounce going and avoid further conflict. How can one go from saying it to "inelegant" to completely disavowing it? If they are saying it is completely wrong let us say we accept it. Why isn't there an apology for making a huge mistake of this scale associated with the admission it was wrong. Finally, what is the reason that it was completely wrong? Such lingering doubts tells more of the personality more than any video can extract from their on-air gestures and body language. It would be revealing to find how the poll numbers will go in the next few days or weeks based on such reactions.

  11. John the Historian

Mitt Romney moved sharply to the center in yesterday's debate. He denied he was planning a big tax cut for the rich. Up until yesterday, the centerpiece of his campaign has been a big tax cut for what he calls "the job creators" so they can go about their work of creating jobs. Suddenly that is off the table. Another huge pivot is regulations. He has been railing against them all year, but yesterday he said government regulations are essential to a modern economy. At this point he knows that the right-wing of the Republican Party is so invested in him that they will pretty much all vote for him no matter what he says now, but for independent voters who may not have paid any attention until now, he wants to come over as a moderate.

Romney is now framing the race as a choice between the failed policies of Obama and his new policies. To insiders, this is essentially an admission that his campaign strategy has failed. Elections featuring an incumbent are normally referendums on the incumbent, whereas open-seat elections are about choices. Up until now, Romney has done nothing but hammer Obama on how his economic policies have failed. This is normal for a referendum election. But now all of a sudden, the election is a choice between two visions rather than a referendum on the incumbent. Romney clearly sees that the previous strategy has not worked, so he is going to try a new one.

@steveo and as I have said before history matters. We cannot dispense with facts, dates, or timelines. History is prologue to what is current. I know you would like to forget facts, dates, timelines and rewrite the past to fit your lie but in the real world that doesn't happen. American's misfortune of the Bush fiasco is a fact of why we have our current problems. Why has Romney not asked Bush and Cheney to campaign with him or be at the GOP Convention? This is not news. But if CNN insists on making this the big headline of the day – which is ludicrous – the person who is really dividing the country is Obama. He wants African Americans to believe that this is white America. How did he ever get into office?? He is a fraud, totally inept – as was witnessed before millions at the debate, and dangerous for our country's economy and security. Romney/Ryan all the way!

Tell me how he divided the country–Republicans instead of working with him declared theyw anted to get him out of office–They would rather have the country fail than to work to make things better for the people-without their help the president, his advisors and the cabinet have helped the country–he listens-prays-reads-pray- and listen for God directions–might make things rough but he knows "If God is for you–It doesn't matter who's against you"

That's all you've got? Why don't you wrap it all up in a sweet little box, wrap it in pretty paper and a bow, and then you can take it out and play with while no one's looking. Sorta like Romney now saying (5 months later) that he was wrong when he told those $50,000 a plate "have mores": There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it. That that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what." The only reason he's sorry now is because he was caught telling the truth of what he believes. Either he was lying to his "have mores" or he's lying to the American people. He can't have it both ways but WAIT, he's the Etch-A-Sketch Man, FlipFlopper in Chief!

Sorry, Roscoe, it was proven to be a lie when Republicans accused Obama of steering money to his buddies. Ouch, you just hope no one is paying attention to the facts about your ranting and raving.
GREEN ENERGY – Solyndra and another failed company represent less than 2% of failed green companies that the government tried to help. The other 33% are doing their best to help America. Not like THOSE COAL COMPANIES that want to keep their profits sky-high come hell-or-high-water. The government has offered to help them become more environmentally responsible, hence the grants to companies who are trying to develop technologies that trap carbon-based emissions from coal, and oil. Romney proves he doesn't care about our air and water. Why? KOCH BROTHERS have donated upwards of $400 MILLION to Republican campaigns. Scott Walker wants to sell a state owned power plant to the Billionaire Brothers for pennies on the dollar. Don't think Romney and ol' Walker really care about the health of the citizens of our country.

He is running scared because he revealed his true nature by flip-flopping and lying heavily during the debate and telling rich donor friends that he doesn't have to be concerned about 47% of America. Wait a minute. First Romney says it when he thinks no one but his rich donors can hear it. Then when it gets leaked, he calls a press conference and doubles down on it. Then he writes an op ed article about it and triples down on it. He then goes around the country and calls it "inelegant" but true and continues to say that he stands by what he says, although it was poorly stated.

Now Romney says he was wrong, and the same tightie righties who agreed with Mitt Romney for all these weeks regarding the 47% comments he made and doubled and tripled down on are now here saying that Romney is somehow great for admitting he was wrong.

Do you realize how ridiculous all you lambs sound? You tightie righties are just going follow Mitt the Twit no matter what he says or does, right? You will just agree with the man on anything he says and following blindly.

@Kool-aid Police: That's all you've got?

ROMNEY IS FRIED , ONE WAY, OR THE OTHER. HE HAS TURNED AGAINST HIS OWN PARTY'S BELIEFS, AND BEFORE WAS AGAINST 47% OF AMERICANS BASIC NEEDS. HE CANNOT KEEP JUMPING FROM SIDE TO SIDE. WHAT PARTY DOES HE BELONG TO FOR SURE?? IMAGINE A NOMINEE WHO FAKES SUPPORTING A 47% NEEDY AMERICANS WHILE HE REPRESENTS THE PARTY THAT HATES THAT 47%? THAT IS ALMOST HALF OF THE USA RESIDENTS !

APART FROM THE FASCINATING NEURASTENIC SCHIZOPHRENIC GOP NOMINEE, THERE ARE REAL URGENT POSITIVE ISSUES TO DISCUSS, LIKE THE JOBS CREATED NOW.

WILL ROMNEY AND HIS GANG TRY TO UNDO THAT BY OUTSOURCING AND FIRING AMERICAN WORKERS, MIDDLE AND WORKING CLASS? HOW CAN WE DEMOCRATS STOP THAT?

HOW ABOUT IMPOSING A HEAVY TAX ON COMPANIES THAT FIRE/OUTSOURCE AMERICAN JOBS?
CAN WE ADD AN AMENDMENT TO THE CONSTITUTION THAT PREVENTS FIRING FOR NO GOOD REASON?

How has Obama done this? That's kind of the problem with American politics today. People keep saying things and then refuse to back it up. If you get enough people to start saying "Romney lights his farts" enough times, eventually, people start to believe it.

Willard Romney's words spoken against nearly half of the country in a private fund raising setting were not off the cuff remarks. He knew he would be speaking there before very high dollar donors, and his words were very explicit, very specific. That is not an accident, not off the cuff, he meant every word he said.

There are two sides to a story, and there are two sides to Mitt Romney. One side is what he truly believes, and there is the other to get elected. What we saw in the debate was the latter side. Months ago, he couldn't tell what he knew was the Middle Class in this country, then at the debate he says "I won't tax the middle class." Clearly you saw in that debate (and a week prior to the debate) his ads saying how he was going to protect the middle class. If that were true, then he should have been campaigning on that record, which he wasn't. He sees the poll numbers in cruical states and somehow, as one finds religion, changes his act. That is a textbook definition of a "flip-flopper." Regardless of Obama's performance in that debate, people see through Romney, and it is clear...nobody's buying it!

While I didn't like the President's showing in the debate on Wednesday, that still doesn't mean Romney would make a better president. Comments like the one he made and the comment he made during the Olympics insulting the host city show that he lacks the tact and empathy to be a leader. He only understands the perspective of a rich businessman because that's all he is.

Romney should have take the official line being touted by the Fox News groupies....the sound bytes were manipulated...he never said any of that about the 47% of the population not counting as people. They'll have to use the same argument since he vowed during the debate not to cut taxes on the rich and to get rid oil companies subsidies, a complete turnabout from the song he's been singing for the last year. He makes Rove look honest.

This is simply a diversion from Obama's embarrassing display at the debate. Unbelieveable how everyone can jump on one comment that isn't even news. But, if you insist on doing this, where is the outrage of Obama speaking in a strange accent talking "down" to "his" people about how they are treated as second-class citizens?? This is outrageous!

Yeah, THOSE PEOPLE who not too long ago were slaves, not able to vote and when finally able to got hung for trying?? I remember just 50 years ago when passing through the South that they had to use separate bathrooms, water fountains and sit at the back of the bus. People have come a long way but, attitudes in some places haven't, especially in the Republican party. Remember what their convention audience looked like? They tried to put a spin on the truth by putting every color and background up onstage for the cameras but, oh-hhhh, those darn cameras told the truth about who were selected as Delegates when they turned them the other way.
When the Republican party tries to disenfrancise voters, who do they target? Blacks, latinos, students, the elderly.

The man Romney has got to be the worst human being created This man is a liar, a phony, a hypocrit, a tax evader, a draft dodger, an animal abuser, a bully, and a man who honors money and welath before people, compassion, and human values of dignity and respect.

On almost every position, he has flip flopped, from heatlh care, OBL, the auto industry, taxes, job creation, even on the coal industry which he once called people killers. This man does not have a shred of integrity and honesty in him. His arrogance is beyond simple, it's extraordinary arrogant. Refusing to disclose his previous tax returns is nothing but a slap to the American people. And some think it's ok to be deceitful and dishonest with America.

How does anybody who has served in our armed forces would even think of voting for this draft dodger in times of war, who didn't have the ball to be a man to stand up against the war, but instead fled to France while our real Patriots went to war.

America wake up and don't buy into this evil used car salesman. This guy cares only about himself and his rich pals. His 47% remark was NOT a mistake, it was the Real Romney talking what he feels about half of America. That's the real guy there. It is not a mistake when you can elaborate extensively about the 47% like he did, that's a true mindset speaking.

Some of us 47 % are here and dont want to be here....GET IT. My husband, who worked at the same job for 21 years, was hit by a truck and left disabled for life. Traumatic Brain Injury. Our family of five has suffered over the past 8 years.
I work 2 sometimes 3 jobs to put food on the table. DO WE WANT TO BE A 47 % er ?????? Hell no. Our lives were much better before Social Security. We have lost our house, car, and alot of times we dont eat so that our kids can eat dinner. Not all of us were born with a silver spoon in our mouths or have rich families to come to our rescue.

DID YOUR HUBBIE APPLY FOR MEDICAID OR MEDICARE? OR YOU CAN DO THAT FOR HIM. WE GOT NO KIDS, LUCKILY. I INHERITED A FAMILY DISEASE CALLED ATAXIA. MY HUBBIE LOST TWO OR THREE JOBS UNDER BUSH, UNDER OBAMA A CO. STORE HIRED HIM AND IT RECOVERED UNDER PRESIDENT OBAMA :) BUT WHEN SPEAKER BOHENER FORCED INHIS BUDGET CUTS, THE STORE CLOSED MOST STORES AND MY HUSBAND WAS FIRED. :( NOW WE EAT PEANUT BUTTER SANDWICHES, BLACK BEANS AND BAKED POTATOES, BANANAS, SOUPS AND BREAD. WE BOTH HAVE LOST LOTS OF WEIGHT. BUT DUE TO THE SALARY MY HUBBIE EARNED, MEDICAID CUT MY WELFARE CHECK GRADUALLY FROM ABOUT 560 DOLLARS MONTHLY TO 22 DOLLARS NOW :( SO FOR US IT IS VERY GOOD TO HEAR PRESIDENT OBAMA WILL HELP AND LIKES US 47% OF NEEDY AMERICANS:)

MAKE SURE YOU APPLY TO SSA OR MEDICAID (THAT DEPENDS ON YOUR AGE, SSA DECIDES THE KIND OF AID YOU WOULD RECEIVE. TRUST PRESIDENT OBAMA!

ROMNEY? SORRY, I DO NOT TRUST ROMNEY , NOR RYAN AT ALL! ONCE I FELL FOR BUSH JR. HE WAS A COMPLETE DISAPPOINTMENT.

HE TRANSFERRED 55 MILLIONS FROM SSA TO HIS TAX CUT FOR THE MILLIONAIRE ELITE, MAINLY. :( I FELL FOR HIS DIRTY TRICK. IRONICALLY, BUSH JR. NOW ADVICES ROMNEY! (SOURCE ABC, 2011 OR THIS YEAR WHEN THE REPUBLICAN DEBATES WERE ACCEPTING ENDORSEMENTS.)

IN EMERGENCY, WRITE TO THE WHITE HOUSE, DIRECTLY TO PRESIDENT OBAMA, ALSO TO YOUR CONGRESS REPRESENTATIVE AND SENATORS.

He just defended and double downed on the 47% comments 2 weeks ago? Now he loves 100% of the people and he will provide health care to everybody and he will not reduce taxs on the wealthy. Omg, when will America wake up to this liar?

He also said that he would repeal "Obamacare" and that people who didn't have insurance could just go to the emergency room.

He did not say that people without insurance could just go to the emergency room.

He was answering a question about healthcare. The suggestion that we did not take care of people before Obama care.

Mr. Romney said “Well, we do provide care for people who don’t have insurance. If someone has a heart attack, they don’t sit in their apartment and die. We pick them up in an ambulance, and take them to the hospital, and give them care. And different states have different ways of providing for that care.”

Nothing is more burdening on the middle class than taxing and punishing the angel investors and private equity firms which provide seed capital for start-up companies, and new businesses. Raising $1T in new taxes on these investors will devastate the job growth. Bill Clinton cut the capital gains tax from 27% to 20% in 1997, and he acknowledged in 1995 that the tax rate increase was a poor choice when he said at a fundraiser, "”Probably there are people in this room still mad at me at that budget because you think I raised your taxes too much. It might surprise you to know that I think I raised them too much, too.” Clinton strengthened the American Dollar with with a smart budget and reduced spending. Obama continues to kill the dollar. When this race started I wasn't sure who I would vote for. I knew that the majority of the Mormons in this country are honest , hard working and loving people. But I also knew that the Mormon church is all for who has the money and the power. They will help you if you help yourself first. Most people who can help themselves first, won't ask for help. There are people in this country who have lost their jobs, been disabled in some way, or have worked hard all their lives just to make it from week to week. These people matter to GOD and should matter to the next President of the United States. When Romney commented that half the people in the United States did not matter, it hit me to the core. He can try to whitewash it all he wants to, but the truth is that he meant what he said. What a man says when he thinks that he is not being listened to, is what he truly means and who he really is. Trying to whitewash it now is not going to make a difference to me and I suspect it will not make a differenc to alot of other people. I am a registered Republican, but on Nov. 7, I will make my choice on who I think has been honest with us. Mitt Romney has not been honest.

Can you believe him, now? Romney is chimerical stealth agent of the Mormon Church, which will buy the White House at any price, and he will say anything to seal the deal. To gain an existential understanding of the cult that produced Mitt Romney, and to get your socks scared off, read The Assassination of Spiro Agnew, available in paperback and e-book at:

    http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=The+Assassination+of+Spiro+Agnew

Its unwilling, part-Mexican Mormon assassin dramatizes the Mormon superiority complex, manifesting it as racism, sexism, jingoism and an anti-federal government temperament. His research in the new library reveals ominous similarities between Islam and Mormonism. The spiritual power behind the cult, which is not the Holy Ghost, acts out.

“With a clarity of language and vision unsurpassed in contemporary American prose, Steven Janiszewski's Assassination of Spiro Agnew takes us into a U.S. mazed with madness and Mormonism and all things Utah, a U.S. that was then and still is. Do we need a novel, even as brilliant as this one, about a young man on a divine mission to assassinate the Vice President because he is too liberal? Yes, now more than ever. Readers, welcome to a masterpiece.”

God Bless the USA! I don't agree with everything and I am not against everything said either. I am an Independent who loves this country to see beyond party. You'd be wise to do the same. Obama did NOT do well in the debate. We all agree with it. Enough! Romney said some disparaging comments...HE DID! Where does that leave us? Arguing about what he should have done on 9/11? If, could have, should have, would have...listen there was another President who didn't "listen" and there was an attack killing 5,000 or so Americans here. Stop! Stop pointing fingers and support and pray for whomever is leading that they take the best interests and do the best they can with what they can...our prayers and support! God Bless the men and women in uniform fighting for you to sit here and bash the leader and candidates whether wrong or right...vote your choice.

For all those who wish to bash consider this...what side are you on and don't deliver BS reasons. He's a Muslim...He isn't born here...Stop! Offer things that at this point are consequential to make another consider your candidate. Not spout hatred. You are stating hatred and that wins who....no one. You are grown men and women. This election isn't just about the economy...women's rights, gay rights, equal pay rights, healthcare, foreign policy, and our deficit. Yes, it is a tall order. Yet, who has your interests here? Where do you fall in the grand scheme. Many are looking for you to decide based on your "hatred"...never make a decision when you are angry. Look at it all and right down a check list of which candidate offers you and your family what you need now and in the future. If you feel Candidate Romney is better...vote for him. If you feel President Obama has your interests...do so. But choose because of your life is in the balance...not one based on race or wealth. Otherwise somewhere you are the 47% or the 100% who have no clue of what is right and wrong which means who is really putting this country in danger. It is a person you cant look any further pass than yourself.

Republcians are acting like children. They are crazy about the colorful clown with a big bag full of tricks. It takes intelligent adults to follow a statesman telling us the facts as they are in a cool, dignified manner. In a nutshell, that's the different between Mad Hatters and mature voters working together to build a better world. Republicans seem to be happy with the Tooth Fairy giving out giant lollipops.

Statesman? What statesman? We no longer have statesmen. We now only have politicians! That goes for SOME on both sides! A better world? Have you seen what is going on in Syria or Iran or Libya or Egypt or the Sudan or the UN who is considering a global tax and removing weapons small arms from legit owners? What better world? To be clear:
Hatred has been festering in the world for a long, long time and it WILL continue! !

    Humm,
There are sure a ton of negative comments here about Romney. I would say Romney has your attention. That Debate, a Preamble of the Election.

    October 6, 2012 at 3:19 pm |
    • Cynthia L.

It has nothing to do with Romney ticking off the rest of the country, eh?? You realize he is talking about Veterans in that mix.The debates showed a Republican candidate agressively flip on his flops. Fire Big Bird along with Jim Leher(the only ones he mentioned firing), fake-pass on his tax plan (?what IS his tax plan?) , give healthcare benefits where they already exist, spewed forth a telling lie about the fact that businesses have been receiving tax-shelters and breaks for shipping jobs overseas, SAYING THEY DON'T (somebody, tell his accountant). It was one fat lie after another AND him saying that if you repeat a lie over-and-over again somebody will take it as the truth. Something he taught his sons, as he used them as an example for using the strategy.
I kind of think Obama did a 'Rope-a-Dope Strategy' on Romney. --He let the man have enough rope and then let him speak himself into a noose. Romney will lose because --he's Romney and no one likes the dude because HE DOESN"T LIKE US.

        Well Cynthia,
What is wrong with speaking the truth? Today most younger citizens think Entitilements are a given. The biggest problem with Entitlements is the 16 Trillion dollar federal debt. All those Fund are-have run out of money. The day could come when the government has to say sorry this horse is dead. You are on your own. The people that have provided for their future will probably do OK but many will be starting at the bottom, just like they had to do in the 1930's. Instead of blasting Romney for speaking the truth you need to look at the facts, not pretty. Adding another 5 Trillion to the debt the next 4 years will just hasten the coming doom. My father lived thru the depression in pretty good shape. But those that fail to learn from the past are bound to repeat it. Romney speaks the truth. Some even when presented with all the facts still refuse to believe them.

  74. SafeJourney

    from jake:
So now Romney is saying he was wrong about the 47%. Here's why he is wrong about being wrong.

He spoke at great lengths to this group of rich folks about the 47%, he went into great detail about why doesn't care about the 47%, elaborating about they want free health care, free food, free everything.
Any psychology major will tell you that when someone goes to the extent of describing something in such detail, he is speaking from a mindset that is well entrenched in those beliefs. For Romney to say he was wrong simply does not pass the litmus test. If he had "misspoken" it would not involve the great lengths he went on to justify what he was saying.

No Mitt, you said what was in your mind and heart. What you said is exactly how you feel about the 47% of Americans. Shameful that you as a Presidential hopeful would think you can be a President for only half the country. Even more shameful is that you think you can pull the wool over America's eyes with your apology. You can't apologize for something that you meant and believe.
No one that believes what you believe is worthy of being President. You're not worthy of any public office for that matter.
    .

You can't believe Romney any more. He was attacking the president last month for not standing up for free speech when a hate movie caused angry responses, yet Romney has now promised to silence thousands of Americans by ending funding to PBS. You can't be a champion of free speech while shutting down communications channels: anyone can see the only ways to maintain such mutually exclusive positions are either a very bad memory or to just lie through your teeth.

Perhaps Mitt Romney thinks 47 percent of the county are taking advantage of the system, because he's been taking advantage of the system very sucessfully his whole life. I think it's called projection.

  77. Geez

I know we have to swing either way, but to be honest both candidates are going to put the U.S. into a hole in different perspectives. Obama- i don't care what he says, the debt is not going to go down. the economy will come back, but later rather than sooner. Romney- we never know with this guy, he changes his view and "plan" everytime he speaks. He is the perfect politician, and that's actually his biggest flaw. I don't want to see him in office. The country will go no where with him.

I think Romney has sized up the situation like any businessman would and he is saying whatever he needs to say to win. I think Mitten is lying when he says he was wrong about the 47%. I still view him as a huckster and a greasy used car salesman. If he was the only candidate running I would not vote for him.

    October 7, 2012 at 4:56 am |
  79. clarke

He didn't really apologize by saying "I am so sorry to all that I offended", he said he was completely wrong, He still thinks what he said was correct and believes in it, but he is looking for votes, so he will change his tune. Sorry, but I don't believe him .

  80. temperance

I'm curious, when did President Obama say he did good or bad? The facts are the facts, Romney has changes his tune to fit what he needs. If he cared about people he would've been engaged when he started, if he wasn't going to raise taxes on the middle class he would already have a plan in place to explain how he was going to raise 5 trillion dollars. If his economic plans were so good then Lyin Ryan would be able to explain them. This guy is a train werak waiting to move into the White House. President Obama was not good Wednesday night, but you can't debate a liar and a bully. Romney was rude, disrespectful and lying his behind off. I'm glad the president didn't mention the 47%, because any fool knows Romney was waiting for it, that's probaly why he was trying to goad the President so much, because it took a national microphone away fro him to give his bull of an apology, so what happens, he goes on FOX the day after and apologizes, you have to LOL on that. Brilliant of the President not to bring it up, it took it from 70 million to a few and backup reporting which hurt Romney. And these personal tales, forget it Romney people see you already, you are a liar who just wants to get the gig.....

Why can't one reporter in America ask Mitt Romney if he took Amnesty for
tax fraud? There's a reason he won't release his tax records prior to
2010. Is it because he's a proven tax cheater? We know he had overseas
accounts during that time frame. Was it an illegal tax haven? I think
it's time for Mitt to come clean.

He made those remarks at a fundraiser consisting of his supporters. He spoke not knowing he was being recorded. Those were his words and his heart. He said he was wrong but he didn't actually apologize.

Those are not the words of a leader IMO.

  83. Hiway

Romney said exactly what he thinks and feels about 47% of this country. He has said he would cut off benefits to them and clearly states he will support the top 2% at the expense of everyone else, including small business that would NOT be getting any tax breaks from him. This is NOT a man to be trusted with your pocket book or medical treatment at any age.

when obama brings this 47% up in the next debate...Romney will make him wish he had never been born. He will honestly explain himself. The time for lies and manipulation are over. First Romney says the 47% statemnet when he thinks no one but his rich donors can hear it. Then when it gets leaked, he calls a press conference and doubles down on it. Then he writes an op ed article about it and triples down on it. He then goes around the country and calls it "inelegant" but true and continues to say that he stands by what he says, although it was poorly stated. Now he says he was wrong. How totally Ignorant can you repubs be especially when you supported what mitt said. Mitt is making a fool out of all you repubs

  86. Proud to be Democrat

Romney has lied about so many things he has a hard time keeping his lies straight. How anyone can trust him to fairly fix our tax system when he won't release more than 1 year's return and has only paid 14% on the millions he's made is hard to believe. He has no intention of helping seniors, the poor and the middle class. The numbers don't add up. You can't give tax breaks to everyone (most going to the top 1%) and increase defense without decimating social security and medicare/medicaid. If you're poor, a senior or middle class, you're a fool to vote the Republican ticket.
