Eight months have passed, but issues remain the same

Washington (CNN) - The last time President Barack Obama held a full-blown news conference at the White House, his first campaign rally was two months away and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum looked to have the upper hand over Mitt Romney in the GOP presidential primaries.

To be sure, in some ways the political landscape has changed dramatically since Obama fielded questions from the White House press corps on March 6: He is now assured of four more years in the Oval Office and can claim fresh leverage in his dealings with Republicans over reaching a budget deal.

But in many ways, the political environment closely mirrors what it looked like eight months ago: Republicans remain in control of the House of Representatives, the GOP leadership maintains it is opposed to any measure that will raise tax rates on the nation's top earners and the president's approval rating remains stubbornly stuck around a less-than impressive 50%.

AND HE BEAT A GUY WHO HAS BEEN CAMPAIGNING FOR EIGHT YEARS. GIVEN THE POOR QUALITY OF THE COMPETITION, I WILL HAVE TO AGREE WITH YOU THAT HE WASTED TOO MUCH TIME ON THE CAMPAIGN.

NOT THAT IT MATTERS, BECAUSE CONGRESS IS BY FAR THE BIGGEST WASTE IN GOVERNMENT RIGHT NOW.

18,500 workers at Hostess just lost their jobs, because of union demands ... even the famous Hostess Twinkies have become extinct as a result. America's farmers and ranchers are about to take a huge hit, thanks to death tax being reestablished on January one. Food chains, and thousands of other businesses are about to lay off millions of employees, thanks to obamacare. Printing and dumping 40 Billion dollars a month into our economy is causing massive inflation. High gas prices are increasing the cost of everything for middle class Americans. Obama wants to raise taxes on everybody ... and our National debt has risen to over a Trillion a year. All of this is a result of your Dear Leader, Barack Obama's incredibly stupid policies ... and yet, you brain washed obama stooges continue to defend him.

    Of Course,
Obama ran for President but didn't do the job. BUT, you Re-Elected him, so live with the results. When it comes to leading, Obama will leave it to some committie. And Vote Present. Meanwhile the National Debt will go around a Trillion a year. Good luck with your selection.

53% OF AMERICANS WILL BLAME REPUBLICANS IN CONGRESS FOR THE FISCAL CLIFF. THAT TELLS YOU QUITE ENOUGH WHO THE COUNTRY VOTED FOR AND WHAT THE MANDATE EXPECTS OF OUR GOVERNMENT. HOUSE REPUBLICANS LOST SEATS AND MANAGED TO HOLD ON TO THEIR MAJORITY BY USING REDISTRICTING AND GERRYMANDERING TACTICS. THEY LOST THE TOTALITY OF THE VOTES TO DEMOCRATS! THEY DO NOT HAVE A WHOLE LOT OF POLITICAL CAPITAL AND ALL THE BLUSTERING IS RINGING HOLLOW. IF THEY KEEP UP THE OBSTRUCTION, WELL... THE REPUBLICAN PARTY WILL SIMPLY BE GONE BY NEXT ELECTION CYCLE.

GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR SELECTION, REPUBLICANS. KEEP UP BEING THE 'STUPID PARTY' AS BOBBY JINDAL WOULD SAY, OR BEING REPUBLITARDS AS I WOULD SAY. SEE, THERE IS HOPE FOR YOU YET WHEN BOBBY AND I CAN SEE EYE TO EYE ON THIS ISSUE.

Ronald Reagan had a democrat congress. For a time the Senate was republician. However he got thing done! Lyndon Johnson got things done! The democrats had the congress for 40 years! So why do you blame republicians for the nation'a problems? If Obama is a leader, still missing, he will get things done! The Fiscal Cliff is a result of Big Government Policies over the last 75 years. The huge 16 Trillion dollar Federal Debe is a glaring failure of liberal politics. Now the Liberal's want to raise taxes on the rich. So I have to ask, if things haven't all been fixed after 75 years of big liberal programs and you are calling me stupid., WHA HOPPEN ?? Yiou had better take another look.

RONALD REAGAN HAD TIP O'NEILL. WHAT DOES OBAMA HAVE? A TEA PARTY! I DON'T NEED TO EXPLAIN TO YOU JUST HOW SUCH A COMPARISON SIMPLY FAILS, RIGHT?

OBAMA IS A LEADER, HE ALREADY SAID WHAT NEEDED TO BE SAID BUT CONGRESS IS STILL ACTING LIKE A BUNCH OF CHILDREN. BOEHNER IS ALSO A LEADER, BUT HE REFUSES TO REIGN IN THE KIDS IN HIS HOUSE.

THE FISCAL CLIFF IS A RESULT OF FAILING TO COMPROMISE, WHICH THE HOUSE REPUBLICANS ARE GUILTY OF. THEY REJECTED SIMPSON-BOWLES BECAUSE OF OBAMACARE. THEY CAN'T HAVE THAT AS AN EXCUSE NOW BECAUSE OBAMACARE IS THE LAW OF THE LAND. HOUSE REPUBLICANS HAVE LITTLE POLITICAL CAPITAL LEFT AND MUST COMPROMISE. YOU COMPLAIN ABOUT SPENDING? OBAMA GAVE YOU A TRILLION DOLLARS IN SPENDING CUTS! WHAT'S THE REPUBLICAN RESPONSE? WE ONLY LISTEN TO GROVER NORQUIST.

PEOPLE ARE SEEING THE REPUBLICANS NOW FOR WHAT THEY ARE AND THE PEOPLE WILL NOT TOLERATE ANOTHER FAILURE IN CONGRESS.

        November 14, 2012 at 11:58 am |
      • John

So the problem is the lack of compromise and not the crazy spending? Nothing to do with billions more in entitlements? Nothing to do with governmnet loans?
You libs seem to forget you had a majority for the first two years of Obamanation. For some reason you libs think because Obama won the election, with millionions less votes, it is now ok to tax us out of existance?

      • Steveo

December, the trillion dollar cuts will mean nothing unless they are applied to the debt and not additional spending! Nobody mentioned where these funds are going, yet!

        November 14, 2012 at 4:20 pm |
      • jean2009

ISteveo I don't remember George W.Bush applying the Clinton surplus to the debt...instead he raided the treasury to give people rebates totaling $1.6 trillion because the treasury wasn't supposed to have a surplus. Really! Frankly why didn't he just apply that to the deficit? That would have been the wisest thing to do....of course come to think of it, he wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer.

IN ADDITION TO THOSE SPENDING CUTS WHICH ARE ALREADY PART OF LAW, OBAMA ALREADY PUT ENTITLEMENT REFORM ON THE TABLE. ANYTHING ELSE? MILITARY BUDGET CUTS SHOULD ALSO BE ON THE TABLE BUT I KNOW REPUBLICANS WILL FIGHT THAT ONE TOOTH AND NAIL, WELL EXCEPT MAYBE FOR RAND PAUL.

IN ANY CASE, IF THEY CANNOT GET AT LEAST 4-5 TRILLION DOLLARS IN CUTS AND TAXES THEN THEY CANNOT SERIOUSLY TACKLE THE DEFICIT. OBAMA KNOWS THIS AND SO EVERYTHING IS ON THE TABLE.

Unfortunately, what December says is true. If the country goes over the fiscal cliff it will be the Republicans bearing most of the blame. Republicans may very well be in a no win position. Republicans have several options. They could simply vote in favor of a majority of the Presidents policies, spending and tax hikes. If the economy grows and is successful, the President will yield a great deal of credit. If the economy drops, it will be difficult to blame the Republicans for being obstructionists. It is a bit of a risk. There were enough people who voted to keep Republicans in control of the house. Some want balance in government and not a super majority. The popular vote was separate by 2 percent. The Democrats need to consider this as well.

        Jean,

You have the most difficult time keeping up! I will recap for you.

December: Obama gave us $1 trillion in cuts
Me: Please apply to the debt
        You: Bush!

        Me: Benghazi
        you: Bush!

Me: Man it's cold out today
        You: Bush!

      • DEcember 2012

THE PRESIDENT HAS ALREADY STATED HE IS OPEN TO ENTITLEMENT REFORM. AS SOMEONE WHO SHOULD NOT BE AFRAID OF EITHER LEFT OR RIGHT AS HE IS SERVING HIS FINAL TERM AS PRESIDENT, I BELIEVE HIM. IF REPUBLICANS CONTINUE TO BE OBSTINATE ON TAXES, THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GET THE PRESIDENT TO MOVE ON ENTITLEMENTS.

WHY IS IT THAT ONLY OBAMA SEEMS TO BE THE ONLY PRESIDENT WHO CANNOT GET ANYONE TO RAISE TAXES, WHEN TACKLING A DEFICIT? REAGAN DID IT. GEORGE 'READ MY LIPS' BUSH DID IT. CLINTON DID IT. ALL OF IT WAS DONE OUT OF SOME NECESSITY AND WITH COMPROMISE. THIS SHOULD BE NO DIFFERENT AND IF WE ARE GOING TO BE SERIOUS ABOUT THIS, EVERYTHING SHOULD BE ON THE TABLE, INCLUDING TAXES.

@Steveo – Keep up, we will be discussing a whole range of topics that have a basis i,n and are founded on historical facts. "Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it." G W.Bush is a historical figure, and a prime example of what not to do....FYI great teaching moments can be derived from learning what not to do.

Evidently you are one of those, who wishes to stay in a fog about the past that doesn't fit your narrow little range of talking points, or you wish to disregard historical facts period when they rub a sore spot...BTW is your other name jerry?

"Whoever wishes to foresee the future must consult the past; for human events ever resemble those of preceding times. This arises from the fact that they are produced by men who ever have been, and ever shall be, animated by the same passions, and thus they necessarily have the same results." – Machiavelli

Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it. True Jean as long as one can learn from history from an unbiased perspective. Otherwise people tend to review history to fit there own beliefs. Case in point would be the FDR years. Many conclude that his policies successfully turned the Depression around. Others believe his policies extended the Depression. Which is true?

        Jean,

Feel free to explain to me, why the "lecture" when I brought up Gore? He too is a histotical figure, correct? In addition, Why do you insist on bringing up Bush when Bush is not the topic? Let me remind you, the topic as brought up by Italmn was BENGHAZI not 9-11, not Bush! I am mor ethan happy to engage you and everyone else when the topic is Bush! The Topic was NOT Bush! Once more, it was BENGAHZI which, if I am not mistaken did NOT happen under Bush!
Please explain what you mean by "keep up"? You can dish it but not take it? I'm not going to disrespect you but I expect the same courtesy in return!

    Well,
All I can say is for at least the last 75 years the Inmates (Democrats?Liberal's) have been in charge of the Asylum. You see the results. But you can ignore the results. If you are happy, I am happy. If Obama get's it wrong the apologists will come up with all kinds of reasons why they failed. And if they can sell enough Snake Oil, not too hard with most of the populous the comedy of errors wii continue. I hear already many businesses are having to let workers go. But, you can ignore the cold hard facts and keep the ponzi scheme giong. There is no doubt ignorance abounds throught the land. After 8 months the issues are the same? Try 75 years.

324,362 BALLOTS OF EARLY VOTING AND PROVISIONAL BALLOTS – NOT COUNTED AS OF YESTERDAY. The Clerk's Office saying they have only been able to count 18,000 ballots a day AND FRIDAY IS THE LAST DAY OF COUNTING.
THIS ON TOP OF MISINFORMATION GIVEN ON THE VOTING INSTRUCTIONS TO SPANISH SPEAKING RESIDENTS THAT ELECTION DAY WAS TWO DAYS LATER ON THE 8TH.

THREE new Republican Senators elected AND ONE OF THEM IS FROM ARIZONA who's state still isn't done counting over 300,000 ballots.

No Frankie...I mean when a majority rural mid-west GOP county has a liberal arts campus made up of east and west coast liberal students located in their county, and they limit the campus to one precinct stocked with two broken voting machines; in hopes the student population will give up standing in line for hours, and not vote...That is voter suppression ...just like S. Florida, Arizona, and many other southern states.

    November 15, 2012 at 7:45 pm |
    • Cynthia L.

Coal miners get killed all the time – it's one of the most dangerous jobs on the planet. Coal dust is deadly to breathe, it causes Black Lung Disease. Coal also produces flammable gas as a side-bar danger and the coal companies have bought off politicans to relax operating requirements – like working fans inside the mines to remove the gas to save on the electric bill- so they put their own miners in even MORE danger from explosions to cut corners. They snub fines and grease the palms of the their state and local officials to skate away from their responsibilities. I know you just love to watch those CLEAN COAL commericals but, that research and that technology has suffered attacks by Republicans for funding because – WE DON'T NEED NO STINKIN' CLEAN AIR. It's about the company bottom line and by golly somebody has to get rich.
Research done on ice cores taken from both the Artic and Antartic have proven that the amount of pollutants from fossil fuels are higher today than the last ONE MILLION YEARS on Earth. Imagine all those volcanic eruptions during that time period and we have now past all of the accumlative carbon particulates in just the last hundred years.
North America now has the biggest rise in weather catastrophies of any other country.
