He just had Maddow, Sharpton and O'Donnell over for a private tax meeting at the whitehouse on the 4th of December. Gee with those brilliant economic minds at his disposal you just know it's a good idea. /sarcasm off

Business leaders need to hire workers, give them a good salery, pay all their benifits, and send the rest to Obama and the Libs. We will take care of you. You don't know how to do it yourself so you need to go along with the program And remember, you didn't build that! You had help!

The GOP would not get on board to pass: The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities Treaty because it might infringe on the right of disabled Americans? Even though Bob Dole came to the Senate to campaign for it, and 153 countries have signed the treaty. Basically just another attempt by GOP to keep American corporations from being responsible for those their practices disable abroad.

        Kool Aid,

I am with you here. A grand waste of prime NYC real estate too! The same body that sat Libya on the UN human rights council back in 2010 and suspended them from said council in 2011. The organziation who was chartered (chapter1, article l) to maintain international peace. Has not stopped a conflict yet. Now trying to regulate the internet

THIS IS TRAGIC AND PATHETIC. THE ONLY REASON THE REPUBLICANS WOULD VOTE THIS DOWN IS EITHER THEY ARE VERY IGNORANT OR JUST HATE THE UN FOR WHATEVER REASON. WHY STOP THERE? START VOTING DOWN ANY TREATIES FOR THE EQUAL TREATMENT OF WOMEN AND MINORITIES? AT LEAST IT IS CONSISTENT WITH THE PARTY BEHAVIOR.

        December 5, 2012 at 5:28 pm |
      • Steveo

        @December,

You talk about the equal treatment of women? The UN elected Saudi Arabia to the UN Council on the Status of Women. In Saudi, women can't go anywhere without a male family member. Don't even think they can drive. Yet in its infinite wisdom, the UN position gives or gave Saudi the prestige of being on the council yet Saudi does not have to live up to the standards of the council on which they sit. My issue is with the hypocrisy! That is my issue! Just like Libya sitting on the Council for Human Rights! we are paying almost 25% of the UN budget for the honor of being punked by third rate dictators! So it is strange for you to mention women's right and the UN in the same breath
        !

I listened to CSPAN last night and both Democrats and Republicans were taking InSanitorium to task for rounding up enough votes to defeat the measure. The bill was modeled on the Americans With Disability Act.of 1990 signed by George H.W.Bush.

The defeat had nothing to do with Ricky's disabled child, and everything to do with making U. S. corporations responsible when their actions disable foreign workers.

STEVEO, YOUR VIEWS OF TREATIES IS SERIOUSLY FLAWED. IN THIS CASE, WE ARE TRYING TO ENACT THE SAME LAWS WE HAVE AT HOME AS THEY WOULD BE ABROAD. SITTING MEMBERS OF UN COUNCILS HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. AND JUST AS SAUDI ARABIA HAS THEIR OWN LAWS UNAFFECTED BY THESE TREATIES BY VIRTUE OF SOVEREIGNTY, SO DO WE. THE POINT OF THIS TREATY IS NOT TO CHANGE LAWS OF OTHER COUNTRIES BUT TO EXPAND OUR OWN TO OTHERS. SINCE WE BELIEVE OUR LAWS TO BE SO HUMANE THEN THERE IS NO REASON WE CANNOT SHOW IT TO OTHER COUNTRIES BY VIRTUE OF THE UN. THAT IS PART OF OUR FOREIGN POLICY AFTER ALL. THIS IS OUR CHANCE TO SHOW THOSE 'EVIL' SAUDIS THAT THEY ARE WRONG AND WE ARE RIGHT.

IF WE ARE PAYING SO MUCH FOR THE U.N. THEN WE ARE DOING OUR CITIZENS A GREAT DISSERVICE BY NOT PASSING THIS TREATY. IT IS A DISGRACE AND SENATE REPUBLICANS HAVE NO EXCUSE FOR SUCH OUTRIGHT IGNORANCE. WHERE DO YOU FIND THESE PEOPLE AND WHY DO YOU VOTE FOR THEM?

        December 6, 2012 at 3:40 pm |
      • steveo

        @december,

Do you read the treaty or even glance at it? There will be a committee of 12-18 members, who get to write the rules of te "committee" as they go along. Cuirrently there are NO RULES! But you want to sign us up to be obligated to a committee with NO rules? Did you also happen to know we would have to send a written report to the "committee" to prove we are in compliance? What happens if we send the report late? What happens when the "committee" determines we are NOT in compliance? And in compliance to what? US Law or the whims of the "committee who has no rules? I'll tell you now, its NOT US law! You ever buy a house without reading the contract?

Perhaps you should at least glance it over before you wish to sign us up for something that is INCOMPLETE!

        December 6, 2012 at 4:28 pm |
      • DEcember 2012

STEVEO, IF YOU THINK IT MATTERS WHAT 'RULES' ARE GOING TO BE IN PLACE WHEN IT WILL BE BASED ON OUR CURRENT LAWS BY THE STRENGTH OF OUR POSITION IN THE U.N. THAT IS REALITY. IF YOU ARE WORRIED THAT WE WILL NOT BE IN COMPLIANCE WITH 'RULES' BASED ON OUR OWN SET OF LAWS, THEN YOU HAVE MORE TO WORRY ABOUT THAN SOME U.N. COMMITTEE.

      • Steveo

        @December,
You didn't answer my question. Did you read or even glance at it? While it might be "based" on our laws, Our laws don't require us to report to the United Nations and to a group of 12-18 non-US elected committee members, whose committee laws have not yet been written. We'll just have to disagree on this one!

HERE'S ANOTHER FUN FACT STEVEO. THIS TREATY WAS INTRODUCED BY GEORGE W.H. BUSH AND HAS PASSED FOR MANY YEARS SINCE THEN. WHAT MAKES THIS YEAR SO DIFFERENT? APPARENTLY THE GOP HAS GONE OVER THE DEEP END OF STUPIDITY.

LET ME MAKE THIS PERFECTLY CLEAR TO YOU: THE U.N. CANNOT TELL THE USA WHAT TO DO. PERIOD. EITHER YOU BELIEVE THE U.N. CAN SOMEHOW TELL SANTORUM TO STOP HOMESCHOOLING HIS KIDS AGAINST THE UNITED STATES LAWS, OR YOU DON'T.

THIS STUPIDITY ABOUT THE U.N. HAS GOT TO STOP. IF YOU THINK THE U.N. CAN SOMEHOW IMPOSE SHARIA LAW ON SANTORUM, JUST SAY SO. THINK JUST HOW STUPID THAT SOUNDS AND YES, YOU SEEM THINK THIS IS SOMEHOW POSSIBLE BECAUSE THE BIG BAD U.N. CAN GET AWAY WITH IT.

THIS IS ABOUT THE CIVIL LIBERTIES OF DISABLED PEOPLE WHO ARE LIVING ABROAD WHOSE RIGHTS CAN BE PROTECTED BY OUR TREATIES WITH COUNTRIES SUCH AS CHINA AND RUSSIA. THEY SIGNED UP FOR IT, SO WHAT IS OUR EXCUSE?

      • DEcember 2012

I MEANT TO SAY, THE A.D.A. WHICH THE TREATY IS BASED ON WAS PASSED BY GEORGE W.H. BUSH AND THE TREATY SIGNED BY OBAMA ON 2009. SORRY ABOUT THE MIX-UP THERE.

        December 6, 2012 at 8:47 pm |
      • steveo

        December,
You corrected stated we already have ADA here, so why the need for a treaty? We are already the best in the world at this, so again, why the need for a treaty? We already do this. We don't need UN involvement in this. Maybe other nations do! I am not concerned about what China and Russia signed up for.

You STILL have not answered the question. Did you look at the the treaty?

        December 7, 2012 at 10:09 am |
      • December 2012

WE NEED THIS TREATY BECAUSE WE WANT HUMAN RIGHTS FOR OTHERS. WHEN WE ARE SO APPALLED BY HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS IN CHINA AND OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD, YOU ARE DOING YOURSELF A DISSERVICE BY NOT SIGNING THESE TREATIES. IF YOU WANT TO INFLUENCE AND CHANGE THE WORLD FOR THE BETTER, THESE TREATIES ARE ESSENTIAL.

I SUGGEST YOU TAKE SOME COURSES ON INTERNATIONAL LAW AND FOREIGN RELATIONS. THE EVER INCREASING ISOLATIONIST VIEW OF REPUBLICANS IS DISTURBING AND HAS NO PLACE IN AMERICAN SOCIETY.

        December 7, 2012 at 8:21 pm |
      • DEcember 2012

AND YES, I HAVE LOOKED AT THE TREATY AND THERE IS NOTHING IN THERE THAT WILL INFRINGE THE SOVEREIGN LAWS OF THE UNITED STATES. HAVE YOU LOOKED AT THE TREATY? HAVE YOU LOOKED AT ALL THE TREATIES WE HAVE SIGNED WITH THE U.N.? HAVE THEY CHANGED ANY OF OUR LAWS? TAKEN HOME SCHOOLED, BESPECTACLED CHILDREN FROM THEIR HOMES? IMPOSED SHARIA LAW IN LITTLE ROCK? DO YOU SEE U.N. DIPLOMATS RUNNING SWEATSHOPS IN BATON ROUGE?

DO YOU REALIZE JUST HOW FOOLISH THESE SENATE REPUBLICANS ARE BEHAVING? I DOUBT IF EVEN SOME OF THEM EVEN READ THE TREATY BEFORE VOTING AGAINST IT.

I always em entertained by right wingers because they don't believe in science or history (facts). If slashing taxes was such a great job creation tool then under Bush/Cheney the economy would have boomed. Tax rates are now at historic lows and we are running a huge deficit from the Bush/Cheney years (80% of the current deficit is from 2 unfunded wars, expansion of prescription drug benefits, and slashing taxes under Bush). So now to rectify this the republicans don't want to incorporate raising taxes on the rich a couple of percent as part of the solution along with entitlement reform?? I can't help but think these people are just out of their minds.

I would suggest reading at the website Business Insider:"The Truth About Taxes:Here's How High Today's Taxes Really Are" by Henry Blodget.... July 12, 2011 read about how high the rates were on incomes of the 1940's (90-94%) on incomes over $200,000.
Be sure to read to the end of the article, where all the charts break down taxes rates for several different periods of time.

Most of that debt was created by Ronald Reagan who tripled the national deficit....and George W. Bush who didn't meet an unfunded war he didn't like.

No, it was the Savings & Loan fiasco...Reagan's Star Wars (Strategic Defense Initiative)which we are still spending billions for....and trying to spend the Russians into oblivion while doing the same with our deficit....and like an ostrich with it's head in the sand...he ran up trillions in deficits which we are still paying. If you are going to spend then don't cut taxes.....for every item congress spends they should in like kind add revenue to pay for it. We are currently paying $500 Billion for Reagan & Bush's $15.4 Trillion deficit.

I do not want to return to 1940 tax rates, plus you can't believe everything that you read. I wonder if I could find an article to dispute that.

    December 5, 2012 at 8:09 pm |
    • jean2009

History doesn't lie Dan.... and the facts are those were the rates. Those 90% rates were still around in the 1950's and that era was called "Happy Days". In the late 1970's when Steve Jobs created Apple, in his parents garage, tax rates for single people earning over $100,000 was 70%. As a 77 year old I guarantee you those were the rates.

      December 6, 2012 at 12:53 pm |
    • Caramon

Dan, Jean is right about the tax rates. It is supported by any number of reports about the 1950s. Of course, the 1950s were a different time and were in fact the Happy Days. However, people had much lower expectations like a modest home and family. I found an interesting comparison between the 1950s and 2012 at http://theeconomiccollapseblog.com/archives/america-1950-vs-america-2012

Here is a little excerpt if it passes moderation...

In 1950, the United States was #1 in GDP per capita.
In 2012, the United States is #13 in GDP per capita.

In 1950, redistribution of wealth was considered to be something that "the communists" did.
In 2012, the U.S. government redistributes more wealth than anyone else in the world.

In 1950, about 13 million Americans had manufacturing jobs.
In 2012, less than 12 million Americans have manufacturing jobs even though our population has more than doubled since 1950.

In 1950, the United States loaned more money to the rest of the world than anybody else.
In 2012, the United States owes more money to the rest of the world than anybody else.

In 1950, mothers decided what their children would eat for lunch.
In 2012, lunches are inspected by government control freaks to make sure that they contain the "correct foods" in many areas of the country. For example, one 4-year-old girl recently had her lunch confiscated by a "lunch monitor" because it did not meet USDA guidelines....

Back in the 1950s and 1960s, about 70 percent of all American adults were married.
Today, only about 50 percent of all American adults are married.

I think there is some truth to it. Maybe it is not all the fault of the politicians.

      December 6, 2012 at 2:10 pm |
      • jean2009

Caramon in the end we all must live in the here and now....

In 2012, we have more countries many with universal care and people oriented programs who are putting us father behind...on the GDP per capita scale.
Plus, we have many countries who are cleaning our clock, by moving away from fossil fuels and concentrating on greener and less costly fuels.

We had welfare in the 1950's. ...we even had it in the 1930's....wonder why it has grown look at the number of manufacturing jobs that have gone..

We actually owe the biggest part of the Federal debt to Social Security and to Federal and Government and other retirees funds than we owe any other country.
        "
Roughly two-thirds of the national debt is owed to us. the U.S. government, American investors and future retirees through the Social Security Trust Fund, pension plans for civil service workers and military personnel, federal banking and securities. China – most surprisingly – holds less than eight percent of the money our government has borrowed over the years.

"It is true that China is the largest single foreign owner of our debt," Josh Gordon, policy director of the Concord Coalition, a Virginia-based nonprofit says. at about 7.2%.... "But the vast majority of our debt is held by us."
Source: "Why Growth Matters More than Debt" at: The American website for The American Enterprise Institute
Source: Just Who Does the U.S. Owe $16 Trillion to? at Catholic online and many other sites.

Beginning in the 1930's -1950's many kids ate in school cafeterias where menus were selected by school boards with input from the USDA...and no local people or PTA had much input, or say about nutritional values. by the 1960's there were even vending machines....mostly in the teacher's lounges. However, school lunches remained rather healthy until they were contracted out to big multi-billion dollar corporations.

Back in the 50's about 70 percent of the people were married and roughly one third or about 37% of those marriages ended in divorce.
I'm a rarity a person who was married in the mid-50's and was married 58 years to the same person.
