Obama spends Hawaiian Christmas visiting troops, plans early return to DC

Honolulu, Hawaii (CNN) - President Obama began his Christmas morning like most Americans – opening gifts and singing carols, according to the White House.

No word on what was under the tree for the president this year, though a fiscal cliff deal was clearly not.  Later Tuesday, the White House announced Obama would cut his vacation short and return to Washington the same day the Senate reconvenes to tackle the looming January 1 deadline before taxes automatically increase and spending cuts set in.

Meanwhile, the president visited the local Marine Base Tuesday afternoon, where he addressed over 100 troops and their families as they were sitting down to a Christmas dinner.  This came after Obama made calls to  service members on Christmas Eve, according to the White House.

“The greatest honor I have as President is being Commander-in-Chief. And the reason it’s an honor is because not only do we have the finest military in the world but we also have the finest fighting men and women in the world. And so many of you make sacrifices day in, day out on behalf of our freedom, on behalf of our security,” Obama told the service members Tuesday.

While the president's vacation is coming to a close early, the White House says first lady Michelle Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia will remain on the island.

You can always tell when Obama is comfortable. He's in his element on vacations, you can tell he'd rather just stay on vacation forever and never work again.

Obama is well down the list on vacation days, and is coming back to Washington early to work on the fiscal cliff...more than you can say about the 40-50 Tea Party nuts who are obstructing any kind od deal and walked out ro go on vacation. George Bush spent 1,020 days on vacation at a cost of about 20 million, leading all presidents by a big margin. Even Roosevelt, who was president for 12 years, is far, far behind. Deal with facts, not your own fantasy.

How bad off was the country when Bush took his vaca days – I assume you are counting the working vacation days for Bush seeing that is all we hear from you obamanusists is – "it is a working vacation". Also, do you count the 400 plus days of golf as part of the days Obama is on vaca? How about the party days when there is nothing on the agenday except parties?
The country is heading off a cliff NOW and Obama is on vacation NOW. What more needs to be said?

      • Dan5404

I guess you issed the fact that the House Republicans abruptly left when the 40-50 Tea Party members decided to protect rich people again and not negotiate or work on anything. Obama can't do it alone, so why wait on the extremists to decide when to return? He is back in the office, and was willing to not even leave until they walked out. Obama is still far behind Bush in vacation days, and so is everyone else. Bush was off from work 36% of the time. And, yes, presidents are often called on to work on certain things while on vacation...it is not exclusive to anyone. It is actually not even worth talking about. It's the kind of thing you bring up when your side has nothing to offer.

Obama can't do it alone. He seemed to shove healthcare down our throats alone.
Don't you understand this country is broke. Don't you understand if you give these nuts more money they will simply spend it on anything and everything. The Taxed Enough Already people who were elected are the only ones who are doing what they were sent their to do STOP THE SPENDING!!!
You stupid libs voted for more of the same when you voted for Obama and that is what you got.
Bush is history. The country is falling over a cliff and Obama is on vacation yet again and all you libs have is "Bush did it"? Good luck with that.

IT IS THIS KIND OF INSANITY THAT MAKES YOU A REPUBLITARD. YOU SEEM TO THINK THAT ONLY REPUBLICANS WANT TO CUT SPENDING WHEN THE EVIDENCE DOES NOT SUPPORT IT. FACE IT, THERE ARE PEOPLE FROM BOTH SIDES WHO WOULD BE EITHER FOR OR AGAINST CUTTING SPENDING. OBAMA HAS ALREADY PROPOSED CUTS AND THAT IS ALL HE CAN REALLY DO! HE CANNOT LEGISLATE! HE DOES NOT HAVE CONTROL OVER THE BUDGET! THAT IS THE JOB OF CONGRESS!!!!

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME CONGRESS ACTUALLY FUNCTIONED THE WAY IT IS SUPPOSED TO? WHY DO THEY EVEN NEED TO MEET WITH OBAMA? THEY SHOULD DO THEIR JOBS AND DELIBERATE AMONGST THEIR FELLOW CONGRESSMEN AND WOMEN! READ UP ON IT IN CIVICS CLASS BECAUSE THAT IS HOW GOVERNMENT IS SUPPOSED TO WORK.

AND YOU COMPLAIN ABOUT OBAMA'S VACATION DAYS? SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE SOME SERIOUSLY MESSED UP PRIORITIES.

fact is obama does not return to camp david or his own home as previous presidents have...this causes huge security risks and costs. Even Regan and both Bushes were very carful about travel and vacations not wanting to risk the lives of security personnel for selfish reasons and spending tax payer dollars unnecessarily...obama has demonstrated a total lack of care about the cost and danger he exposes the security personnel to. The typical narcissistic personality.

And you think Throbbing Member is better because he is on the Dem Lib side? With all of your posts I have never seen you call a lib out on any post. As far as nut jobs on this site goes – I think we have plenty from both sides. Take libs for example – calling people "red neck", dumb fart", "rebartards", "dirtbag", "moron"? And these nasty comments from LIBS like you, and including you, are just from this one story.
It has been over 4 years now and Obama is a failure. Why else would you libs lean over backwards to defend him when he is changing this country into a larger form of Greece?

"If we have to go off the cliff, so be it" – BO
He said this over two months ago. Maybe you libs can tell us again what a great job BO is doing.
Given the media hype now I can see the repubs being blamed short term. Eventually, everyone will come to realize the person in the leadership position is ultimately responsible. If we don't go off the cliff Obama will get credit. It is reasonable that he should get the blame if the governmnet fails the American working people once again.
You libs voted for this mess when you voted for more of the same with Obama... I blame all the dems and repubs for this mess, but ultimately, the buck stops with the person in charge.

  20. John the Historian

Never forget the Republicans are only the party of the Christian Right who want theocracy and ban on all abortions, the military-industrial complex who want continuous war and are praying for war with Iran, the Wall Street Elite who want no taxes on corporations and their continued bonuses despite laying people off and not posting profits, and the rich who don't want to pay taxes. All Republicans need to retreat to the planet kolob where Willard hopefully has gone to.

    December 28, 2012 at 5:47 pm |
    • Dan B

If you are a historian, then you should know that many Democrats believe in no abortions too, and historically abortion was viewed as illegal and immoral. Historically, Reppublicans are not the only ones to start wars... Vietnam for instance. Third, historically socialist countries that you seem to agree with consistently fail

        Eisenhower was a Republican....
"The Vietnam War was a cause of much controversy in the United States. One of the first things to realize about the war is that it was a progressive thing. What began as a small group of 'advisers' under President Dwight Eisenhower ended up with over a total of 2.5 million American troops involved."

It is what you could call the snowball effect. You first send a few advisers in to teach people how to fight ,and the next thing you know you have a full blown war on your hands.

        December 29, 2012 at 2:21 pm |
      • Marie

I suppose, but the mass of troops was started with Kennedy, and LBJ oversaw the war. Nixon, a Republican, ended it in 1972.

        December 29, 2012 at 3:41 pm |
      • jerry

It made sense for Ike to have some people in asia after the war...it was JFK who sent in trainers and LBJ that ultimately escalated the war...for reasons that escape any thinking person...LBJ was a liberal who lied to congress bullied and bribed to get his way (much like obama)... Now, the leftist with the most blood on his hands ins FDR, 50 million dead when he embargoed Japan and allowed England to declare war on Germany when Germany was already in full retreat out of Russia since 1943. Some of you fools just eat up the revisionist history that always favors the leftist. It is the leftist who are responsible for the horrible state of the world today...and yet many of you drink their cool aid out of ignorance and selfishness...God help us.

What a joke. I'm sure the military members were forced to meet with him. I was in Saudi Arabia when Gore came to visit. They asked for volunteers to listen to a speech and only got 2, when they wanted 80. They then forced members to attend. Some were kicked out for flashing the finger at his behind his back. We were working 12-18 hours at the time and the last thing anyone wanted to do was to see some pampas ass talk in the hot sun. By the way his speech was on his hero, it was about some wrestler, my goodness what a bring time we had. Politicians are clueless about the military and general public they supposedly serve.

THE ONE QUALIFICATION THAT ONLY MAKES SENSE IS THAT THE PRESIDENT IS SOMEONE POPULAR! OBAMA'S GOT NO PROBLEM WITH THAT.

THE GREATNESS OF OBAMA IS THAT WE ARE NOW MORE INCLUSIVE, ANYBODY CAN BE PRESIDENT, EVEN BLACK FOLK. BEYOND THAT, HE IS NO BETTER THAN THE PAST FOUR PRESIDENTS GIVEN THE SAME POLITICAL CIRCUMSTANCES. NOTHING REALLY STANDS OUT BECAUSE THE MESS WE ARE IN DUE TO CONGRESS.

Actually if you want a good president you definitely want someone who understands how government works and how it affects lives at the local level. The job of a community organizer is working with local groups to legally help solve problems of how government can best address their needs. You obviously are clueless about what a community organizer actually does...and the rest of President Obama's qualifications..

Besides being a lawyer and community organizer, he chaired several non-profit foundations which worked to improve life for people. Plus, I would consider 3 terms as an Illinois State Senator 1997-2004 serving the people of the 13th District on the state level, and 4 years in the U.S. Senate (as the Senator from Illinois) good experience. Not to mention the 12 years teaching Constitutional Law.

It might help you to do a wiki search of his accomplishments.

        December 30, 2012 at 2:28 pm |
      • Marie

Well... if you look at past presidents, I can't think of anyone less qualified. Almost all of the past presidents knew the government in some way, and Obama's one skill-negotiating-isn't exactly panning out. Go back in time. Plus, no president in recent history has had an extreme popularity problem at midterms except for Bush sr. and Carter.

NO OTHER PRESIDENT HAD TO DEAL WITH A TEA PARTY AND A DEPRESSION AT THE SAME TIME, NOT EVEN FDR.

IT'S FINE, YOU CAN DISLIKE OBAMA ALL YOU WANT BUT TRY TO BE A TAD OBJECTIVE ABOUT IT. I KNOW HE IS FAR FROM PERFECT, HE DISAPPOINTED ME ON MANY LEVELS, BUT I DON'T SEE JUST HOW MUCH WEAKER HE IS COMPARED TO PAST PRESIDENTS GIVEN THE CIRCUMSTANCES.

Well Marie, I think current history has just proved you wrong. It seems the President can notonly negotiate, but can come out on top. Plus 2010 and 2012 is history and the teapitty will be doing good if it makes it through the next election cycle.....just like the Know Nothing Party of the 1850's & 1860's. Watch and see who is inaugurated this month for a second term.

But Willard wants to go to the planet of kolob. He wants either his 70 wives like rapists Brigham Young or the 87 wives con artist Joseph Smith had. But I guess you are right he might want to go to Jackson County to await the second coming of the mormon cult polygamist Jesus Christ with rapist Joseph Smith at his side. The archangel moroni might want to come with some fake golden flying tables for the rapture. Maybe the mormon American-Indians that Jesus Christ preach can finally be seen. Wonder if Brigham's 19 wife who divorced him will show up. Anne Romney might have a crying hysteria if she doesn't show up. And Glenn Beck the mormon conspiracy theory nut can also show up with his freemasonry mormon cult symbols. Don't forget the magic underwear kolob gets cold.

I know it can be fun to pick on Mitt, but there are plenty of people in your own party to pick on like Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid and the wacko California and Massachusetts and Maryland and New York Liberals. Willard, as jean said, is irrelevant. Stick to them.

      December 29, 2012 at 3:45 pm |
      • DEcember 2012

AND HARRY REID IS ALSO A MORMON.

THE PROBLEM IS BOTH MEN ARE POLITICIANS. THAT SLIMY, ICKY FEELING WE HAVE ABOUT BOTH MEN HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MORMONISM ITSELF.

well lets talk about the clintons cheating on each other...FDR, JFK, and yes LBJ who said he had more women than all the Kennedys put together....these are the real modern scum bags....John Kerry who married money and lied for medals then threw them in the garbage... And, there is obama the anti christ/American of all time... Mitt Romney is clean and you hate him for it...sick! You have what you deserve.

I can't wait for the Rick Santorum/Michelle Bachmann ticket of 2016. When Rick comes out of the closet and Michelle admits she has a lesbian sister maybe these bigots when they get their third thumping in an election will realize no one wants their Christian Right and Wall Street corruption agenda. Those FLDS members like Willard, flip flops like Franklin Graham, and Mike Huckabee hatemongers blaming Gays for gun violence will realize their day is over. Puritan American failed. Oliver Cromwell failed, the Confederacy failed, and Jerry Falwell and his moral majority failed. Their dreams will never be accomplished. Roe versus Wade is here to stay. Even Roberts says Roe is settled American law. Can't wait will the USA has Gay marriage like Canada, Catholic Spain, Lutheran Sweden and Reformed Church Holland and very soon England, France and Finland as well. What will you Christian Right nut cases do ? Get your free birth control and RU-486. The Republican party the party of the American Whig party. The Confederacy lost get over it you redneck theocrat Republicans. Newt Gingrich on his third wife and Rush on his fourth telling me about family values. HA Ha.

You seem to have this idea locked into your head that a Tea Party candidate is coming out of the Republican party. Again, look at the past, even after the Tea Party creation in 2010, Romney still was picked as the nominee- an establishment Republican. Granted, the man I wanted didn't run- same for a lot of people- but people still voted for Romney. If you forget, Obama only one by a similar margin to Bush vs. Kerry in 2004 only Obama one by a lot more electoral votes.

I THINK WE ALL GOT SPOILED BY WHEN GEORGE W. BUSH SEEMINGLY LED US ALL TO SPEND ON TWO VERY EXPENSIVE WARS THAT HAD NO LOGICAL END. IF THAT IS THE LEADERSHIP YOU ARE LOOKING FOR THEN YOU MUST HAVE VOTED FOR MITT ROMNEY. TOO BAD THE COUNTRY DID NOT AGREE WITH YOU.

Bush's BIGGEST deficit was like 500 billion, and yet Obama is into the trillions- where did the extra come from. Don't tell me the wars suddenly started costing more money because we both know that's not true. You know what was funny, in this election Obama said he wanted to "get serious about the deficit." Why should anyone suddenly believe that he cares now?

      • DEcember 2012

UMM, THE WARS WERE NOT ON THE BOOKS BEFORE OBAMA TOOK OVER. DID YOU NOT KNOW THIS?

AND ONCE AGAIN, CONGRESS CONTROLS THE BUDGET. THEY COULD HAVE EASILY SAID NO TO ALL THE SPENDING ON STIMULUS AS WELL ON THE TWO WARS. WHERE WOULD WE BE WITHOUT STIMULUS SPENDING I WONDER? THAT'S UP FOR DEBATE, ALTHOUGH MOST WOULD AGREE WE WOULD BE BETTER OFF WITHOUT THE LONGEST WARS IN OUR NATION'S HISTORY.

let the sequester stand... it is the only responsible thing to do...force cuts and raise spending...then tie obama's hands behind his back on the debt limit..freeze this slim ball out! Go get em Tea Party.

I know everyone rags on the Tea Party, but really... I mean if they are SOOO awful, why did you guys (the Democrats) lose a bunch of seats in 2010. Granted, a few of them said some crazy and dumb stuff (specifically Todd Akin), but they have great influence still, for better or worse for the Republican party.

    December 31, 2012 at 11:42 am |
    • DEcember 2012

ALL THEY HAVE DONE IS SAY NO TO EVERYTHING. WHAT'S SO GREAT ABOUT THE TEA PARTY? SOMETIMES YOU CAN DO MORE BY BEING LESS EXTREME AND ANTAGONISTIC. NOT TO MENTION, LESS CRAZY.

      January 1, 2013 at 11:43 am |
      • Marie

Because the Progressive Liberals are soo willing to compromise and are so un-extreme. Do Democrats not think their left wing is extreme?

        January 1, 2013 at 4:28 pm |
      • DEcember 2012

I FIND THEM LESS OFFENSIVE. WHY WOULD I HATE PEOPLE WHO WANT GOVERNMENT SPENDING ON THOSE LESS FORTUNATE? WHEN DID IT BECOME SO WRONG TO FIGHT FOR MORE EQUALITY? FOR BETTER WORKING CONDITIONS AND WAGES?

THE TEA PARTY? THEY CLAIM THEY WANT TO STOP RAMPANT GOVERNMENT SPENDING. I FIND THAT HILARIOUS. I WANT TO SEE THEM SUPPORT LESS DEFENSE SPENDING. WHAT DO YOU THINK THE ODDS ARE OF THEM SAYING NO TO MORE MONEY FOR MORE FIGHTER JETS, SHIPS, ETC. MANUFACTURED IN THEIR HOME STATES? THIS IS NOT JUST TRUE OF REPUBLICANS BUT DEMOCRATS AS WELL, BUT SINCE NOBODY ACCUSES DEMOCRATS OF BEING SHY ON SPENDING ANYWAY... WHY RUIN SUCH A WELL CRAFTED STEREOTYPE?

DON'T GET ME WRONG, GOVERNMENT SPENDING NEEDS TO CHANGE SO IT IS DONE WISELY AND WITH LESS WASTE. BOTH SIDES NEED TO COME UP WITH LONG TERM PLANS TO STOP WASTEFUL SPENDING. IT TAKES OPEN COOPERATION FROM ALL SIDES, NOT OBSTRUCTION AND STUBBORN IDEOLOGY.

        January 1, 2013 at 5:24 pm |
      • Marie

Of course the government needs to help those less fortunate, but are you telling me that 16 million more on food stamps in 4 years is absolutely necessary. Are there not some who take advantage of the system. And I think that since 2 wars are coming to a close then defense spending should be decreased. Spending NEEDS TO BE CUT FROM A LOT OF AREAS. But the some Democrats on the Senate want nothing to do with cuts in spending. I don't consider a reduction in the rate of growth as a spending cut either.

        January 1, 2013 at 6:43 pm |
      • December 2012

SINCE NOBODY WOULD WILLINGLY GO ON FOOD STAMPS UNLESS IT WAS NECESSARY SO I AM GUESSING YES, IT PROBABLY WAS NECESSARY. LISTEN, YOU CAN CUT ALL THE FOOD STAMPS, IT WON'T MAKE MUCH OF A DENT TO THE DEBT. YOU WILL JUST END UP WITH A LOT OF HUNGRY KIDS AND FAMILIES, WHILE THE FRAUDSTERS WILL FIND SOMETHING ELSE TO STEAL.

AS I HAVE SAID, I AM AGAINST WASTEFUL SPENDING AND THAT INCLUDES FRAUD. THERE'S A LOT OF FRAUD IN ALL LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT SPENDING, BUT IF ARE TELLING ME THAT SOME WELFARE QUEEN IS THE PROBLEM WHILE TURNING A BLIND EYE TO DEFENSE CONTRACTORS THAT OVERCHARGE THE GOVT? YOU'VE GOT TO BE JOKING.

I THINK WE BASICALLY WANT THE SAME THING, WE JUST NEED TO GET IT ALL WORKED OUT BY OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS. A REDUCTION IN THE RATE OF GROWTH IS A TINY START BUT THEY NEED TO DIG DEEPER IF THEY WANT TO BE SERIOUS ABOUT FACING OUR DEBT.

        January 1, 2013 at 7:13 pm |
      • Dan B

There are people that DON'T WANT TO WORK and will go on food stamps to get money. So many people abuse the system. My wife was a visiting nurse for 35 years and used to come home everyday to complain about these people (obviously not everyone). Medicare and Medicaid and Social Security have so much waste. It is time to reform entitlements.
