Biden plan: 19 solo steps Obama could take on guns

Washington (CNN) - Gun control proposals put together by Vice President Joe Biden include as many as 19 executive actions that President Barack Obama could take without congressional approval, such as tougher enforcement of existing laws, legislators briefed by Biden said Tuesday.

The president could demand that agencies provide data for background checks that are supposed to accompany gun sales, ensuring that information included in the checks is as "comprehensive and complete as possible," Democratic Rep. Mike Thompson of California told CNN.

Just another smoke screen to divert attention away from the deficit, benghanzi, jobs, unemployment, fast and furious......no one is taking our guns away, never have , never will............

Yes, the proposed gun control debate must be a smokescreen. Because obviously, attempting to prevent murder and crime in this country should not be a priority.

      (Are you serious?)

My thoughts exactly! When will the American people wake up and see through the constant barrage of lies they push at us? It sickens me to think that people are so quick to believe the people who profit from our losses.

Do we have anyone here from the UK looking at this site?
If yes, how did they take away your guns? Did the government go around with a list of people who had guns and knock on their doors and ask for their guns?

Convicted felon or mentally deranged?? They are talking about assault weapons and large capacity clips, closing gun show loopholes, like how many guns can be purchased at one time and background checks for purchasers. Guns will still be around but, hopefully a little sanity will come out of this.
Pres. H.W.Bush passed an assault-weapons ban while in office AND did it by Executive Order. So, any puffed up politican who threatens to impeach over this will have a hard time since it's not the first time it's been done.

Pres. H.W.Bush passed an assault-weapons ban while in office AND did it by Executive Order. I didn't know that.

Yeah, I think something should be done about gun shows. I would have thought it would have been done after Columbine.

It's not really surprising. Presidents from Reagan down to Obama have always wanted an assault weapons ban. These efforts by Obama should not be surprising because it has been done before but because of the political toxicity, Obama is being slammed for being a dictator... a king??? There is a lack of responsible language coming from some of our politicians on this issue and it is causing the debate to reach a dangerous level. We don't want another Oklahoma City bombing.

Definitely there should be tighter background checks on private sales, gun shows. There should be a limit to ammo capacity. If a mother of two can effectively protect herself and her kids with a revolver then I don't see why need high capacity rounds. An outright 'assault weapon' is not going to be as effective if there is no teeth to the law so don't bother. Stick to buy-back programs and hope for the best.

All they've talked about so far concerns legal gun ownership. They really need to get rid of the illegal guns and prosecute the people who own/use them, they're the ones who commit the crimes and they don't buy their guns in stores or at shows.

      KAP,
Going after legal owners is much easier than going after underground weapons. It gives a quick sense that something is actually being done! We are not a patient people.

      January 15, 2013 at 1:34 pm |
    • Caramon

We are not a patient people...True. Look what happened in New York so far. A whole mess of new regulations. However, I doubt that is will have any effect on criminals using illegal weapons. I don't think they will rush out and register their black market gun. Yet, something should be done.

I would like to see more on the numbers concerning guns and gun use. How many of the 30,000 plus killings each year are caused by people with registered weapons versus non-registered weapons. How many semi-automatics are there. How many people are killed with a semi-automatic versus shot, rifles and pistols. Maybe there should be some regulation. However, it needs to be the right regulations for the right reasons. Otherwise, it is just for show. Gun shows should be regulated so they meet the same requirements as the gun shops.

Agreed, Caramon! It has to be the right law to address the right issue. We will most likely just get another band aid.

I agree. What seems to me to be the biggest problem with legal guns is the chance that somebody who isn't mentally stable gets ahold of one, so that should be priority one for legal sales. For illegal guns it would take a task force but I think most police already know who the gang members and drug dealers are in their area. Do some investigation and find out where they get their illegal firearms from.

        January 16, 2013 at 7:12 am |
    • Carmel guy

Agreed, to an extent. Its going to be a process and not happen all at once.

The fact that there are lots of guns out there, and the fact that those laws have been implemented inconsistently over the years shouldnt discourage us from attempting to improve the situation over time.

Yes, it would certainly be a shame if a few kids lives were saved by whatever gun control measures he suggests.

Why would he be ashamed of addressing the gun violence issue with people who obviously are concerned about it? Are you afraid that some of those people are children?

We often remark how bright and smart our kids are. Call it bragging or pride, but perhaps some of it true. Kudos to the President for the acknowledgement.

He is using 8-year olds – you don't see anything wrong with that? I assume you didn't see anything wrong with publishing the names of gun owners in the newspaper either?

There were kids younger than them that were murdered in Newtown. You don't think they have the right to voice their opinions? It is times like these when we are all in the same boat, all voices need to be heard.

Thanks. I thought there was/is a total ban on all guns in the UK – that is why I asked the question. I still wonder how, once the law was passed, how the UK government collected the guns.

On a related subject – another lib knee jerk reaction with their new "gun laws" – especially when we consider over 85% of the guns used in crime in NY were from out of state.

      January 16, 2013 at 6:40 am |
      • Cynthia L.

New York State just passed a pretty comprehensive law. Those who already own assault rifles like the Bushmaster will be grandfathered in BUT have to legally register their guns. NO clip can hold more than seven bullets and I believe Armor-piercing bullets are now illegal. You can check it out on the web.

        January 16, 2013 at 11:14 am |
      • John

Cynthia – 85 % of the guns used to commit crime in NY were brought in to NY. Also, many of the so called assault guns can be reclassified with a minor tweak to the gun handle. Also, a good shooter can change a clip in less than a second.
This new law is a typical knee jerk lib reaction that will do nothing to curb crime.

A Federal Ban will stop a lot of the stateline crossing traffic. You just keep shooting yourself in the foot on that one.

      • John

Cynthia, you really think criminals will follow laws?

        January 16, 2013 at 12:26 pm |
      • Cynthia L.

Gee, John, in your way of thinking, we should give up on having a civilized society where people thrive because ooooh there are criminals?? Wimpy reasoning.

        January 16, 2013 at 12:41 pm |
      • John

Actually, I think libs are the ones giving up on our free society when they make laws that do nothing to solve the problem and impact people who are already doing the right things simply to follow their "gun agenda". Again – 85% of the guns used in crimes in NY were brought in from other states. And, BTW, 1 % of legal guns were used in murders in NY.
SO, given your way of wimpy thinking, it appears you can care less about legal gun owners or if a problem is solved or not as long as "the lib gun agenda" is followed (even if you use 8-year olds to make a phoney point). Obama did the same thing he did today with Obamacare when he trotted out a child and said "his mother has no health care" when later we found out it was just another Obama lie. This is the gutter strategy used by the left i.e. if you disagree with me you are hurting children, women, old people, differently abled people and on and on and on.
BTW, what happened to "I won't rest until everyone who wants a job has one"?

I was stationed there for 3 years. Yes they still hunt and I know plenty of people there that have guns for hunting, at least they had them when I was there, 1997-2000.

Evidently no one understand the difference between an assault rifle ( fully automatic) and a semi-automatic rifle. The Bushmaster is not an assault rifle it is a semi-automatic rifle. Since you can get the facts on the ban maybe you should stop being a sheep and get the facts on the weapons themselves.

    January 16, 2013 at 11:48 am |

Banning assault rifles won't fix the problem, as proven before, and this is a much more political issue than actually accomplishing much in the way of guns.

lets get this straight. obama arms and finances rebels to over throw their govts. and then wishes to take semi-auto rifles away from Americans? Don't we have the right to protect ourselves from our govt? We did not elect a Kenyan King... throw the guy out of America.

    January 17, 2013 at 4:03 pm |

Gee, Jerry, it's called the VOTE. That's yours to defend. And, if the majority of this nation's citizens VOTED for president of another party, or one not of your choosing then, you'll have to VOTE again next time and maybe your guy or gal will get in. When they take our votes away that will be another story.
P.S. Right now the Republican Party is involved deeply with voter suppression. I think we have an OBLIGATION to PROTECT OURSELVES from that. What say you?
      P.S.S. King's are not elected.
