Day 2 post SOTU focuses on early childhood education

President Obama continues his post-State of the Union tour on Thursday by traveling to Decatur, Georgia to talk about quality preschool education for every child in America. He’ll start his time in Decatur off by visiting a pre-kindergarten class in a nearby early learning center. CNN has obtained a letter to parents of the College Heights Early Childhood Learning Center, saying the president would be visiting their school (despite the school system being on winter break.) Parents are encouraged to bring their kids in specifically for the President's visit. His main remarks will be later at 1:20p at the Decatur Recreation Center.

President Obama will return to DC in the late afternoon, in plenty of time to celebrate Valentine's Day with the First Lady (they’ve gone out to dinner two of the last four years).

In addition, President Obama participates in a Google+ Fireside Hangout live from the Roosevelt Room at 4:50p. According to the White House, “During the hangout, which is hosted and moderated by Google, the President will connect with people who are active online to discuss the policies and proposals in the speech.”

Just like any leader, they are allowed vacations – and we all know our presidents take working vacations.
I am one who takes a very critical view of policies from this president and the last one, but I do not have an issue with his vacations, especially when he takes his vacations in the US.

It's not about the caps. It is the incoherent babble.

This argument about vacations is beyond stupid. Either you believe a president can take vacations or you don't. In case you don't then I suggest you start suing President George W. Bush for taking the most, and if that works out for you go down the line.

Twigbreath – The President regardless of the fact he calls going home to Hawaii a vacation, actually never takes a true vacation. Being President is a 24/7 – 365 day a year job...no days off. Regardless of where he is located he has a daily briefing, is on call, and has the black briefcase.
It didn't matter if George Bush was at Crawford ranch, Camp David, or reading My Pet Goat on 9/11, or how much his airfare for 477 days at Camp David, or his 77 round trips for 879 days at the Crawford ranch cost.... he was still on the job...and that is the same for all presidents.
So quit whining....truth is you are not president....never will be...not a congressman....and obviously clueless.

Teacher’s union lobbyists are willing to rob the US treasury by attempting to transform slow minded students into high-tech employees. Forcing mentally challenged kids to learn more than reading, writing, and arithmetic means wasting 400 billion of taxpayers hard earned money. A better idea would be to build heated sports facilities where millions of these kids can jump, play, and do what keeps them happy. But children that are willing to learn should be given the opportunity to expand their education and go on to become the pride of the American workforce. Thousands of school teachers would lose their useless jobs, but they would rise again by becoming great sports directors and basketball coaches.

The Obama administration has done more for veterans than any previous administration in recent history. The expansion of medical benefits to Vietnam War veterans and added funding to the VA are just some examples. Even if you have not completed the mandatory 20 years, you are still eligible to about 5 years of medical coverage. The expansion is so great that the VA could barely track everything so they are modernizing to paperless to keep up with the demand.

If you know a veteran in need of medical attention, please do what you can to make sure they are in touch with the VA so they can get the help they deserve and are entitled to.

Does anyone else realize that Pre K education provides so much benefit BECAUSE it is not publicly run? It is a private entity, and in order for them to survive they have to offer a service worth the money spent to send a child there. Turn it into a public school system run by the state and the quality ed and learning benefits it provides will dry up instantly.

So in a time where Congress is incapable of moving, the President is trying to make it move. Are you of the common belief with Senator Grassley that just because Congress does not act, it does not mean the President should? So with whom should he act? Congress or campaign stops with the people??? Apathy is so great among American citizens that "taking it to the streets" does little except gin up aggrivation and dissatisfaction. A leader should lead and not rabble rouse... his place is and has always been in DC leading the congress through very difficult times... Instead he takes un-compramizing stances and rouses the people to a frenetic state instead of being a true President of hope and change.

        February 15, 2013 at 5:01 pm |

If Republicans are going to argue that the President stays behind closed doors to do the people's business, which is what they've done alot, then they can't complain the President is reaching out to the people to do the people's business in person. The President belongs to all Americans where as Congressmen and Senators think they only belong to the people who live in their states OR WORST the folks that bought their campaigns. Not all do, but too many don't think they serve the citizens of the rest of the country as well, speaking only for a small percent of the nation's population.

        February 15, 2013 at 6:44 pm |
      • DEcember 2012

This is nothing really new. The President always takes his case to the people if Congress fails to act, which this Congress and the one before it has often failed to do. Why is this so shocking?

        February 16, 2013 at 10:47 am |
      • Caramon

Actually Cynthia, Senators and Representatives do not represent states, they only represent people in their district. The reason is to give voice to people who otherwise live in the minority. It is the one thing great about this country. Even people in the minority have a voice whether Republican or Democrat. If we truly believe in representation, then even the minority must be heard.

Cynthia, God forbid he dropped the bottle while taking a drink. LOL...
My big concern with stuff like this is the news media. They go out of their way to try to put repubs in a very bad light and to put forth the notion that "Repubs = bad" and "dems = good".
No one thinks if this were Obama or another dem doing the same exact thing that this would have been any kind of an issue. Do libs want to tell us again how "un-bias" the news media is?

      • Cynthia L.

Well, Bill, it wasn't that he took a drink of water – it was HOW he took a drink of water that was funny. And, then came the SOUND of the GULP as he swallowed it! First the odd manuever to get the water and not knowing if he should keep eye contact with the camera as he reached for it – reached for it – reachhhhhhhed for it. That was hilarious. Then a quick sip and a very loud gulp. Besides, the speech was a Romney re-do like most Republican speeches. You would've thought he knew we've heard it all before and would of come up with something a bit different. What is original about this guy ? – nothing except the drink which stuck in everybody's mind. Like Clint talking to an empty chair stepping on what was supposed to be Mitt's moment in the sun.
Weirder things have happened to end a promising career – if that's what he has. Seems like a nice guy but, not really ready for primetime.

"The Howard Dean Screech" – I saw it just as many times on CNN as I did on Fox. He looked and sounded totally crazy in the middle of a campaign and it cost him the "primary" election. And you compare this to Rubio drinking water? Rubio wasn't running for anything. Also, if all the dems didn't have a problem with it, as you didn't seem to, he would have won, but he didn't. Dean is a far left loon who looked like a far left loon.

Rubio isn't running for President? I thought he was the 'Repulbican Savior'. Did I say I wouldn't vote for Rubio because of his WATERGATE incident? No, I didn't, but I won't because he's not the brightest bulb in the chandelier. And, if you want to vote for your little golden boy when the primaries come around, be my guest – it wouldn't surprise me if you do. Don't be surprized if people send him bottles of water instead campaign cash though. HA!!

SO... even though this president signed it .. it is still Bushess fault??? Typical liberal logic.... Appearently you like the law sice it is okay for this president to sign it but not okay for his predecessor to have requested it....

      • DEcember 2012

Are you really this dense? Obama signed it so yes, he perpetuated it or are you arguing that Bush did not start it?

I am against the Patriot Act but I didn't hear Mitt Romney campaigning against the Patriot Act so I didn't vote for him. Instead, I kept hearing more war rhetoric that nobody wants to hear. I chose the lesser of two evils. At least this President is trying to get us out of these huge and expensive wars. Make no mistake, I am vehemently against this President when it comes to these issues. Look up my comments about SOPA and CISPA. Unfortunately, the problem does not end with him because these measures tend to have bipartisan support. I sure don't hear Republicans other than Ron Paul yelling about it.

        February 18, 2013 at 12:26 pm |

BTW, there are many online petitions against CISPA so if your outrage is in any way real, I suggest you look at those at the very least. I have already written my Congressmen, Senators and President. It's put up or shut up time.

Basically the GOP was for drone attacks before they were against it....and they were not against it before 1/19/2009. Amazing how fast they flip-flopped on that one.

Now Johnnie McCain wants the Pentagon to be in charge of drone attacks instead of the CIA...fine Sec. Def. Hagel can do that! His only petty reason for the snit over Hagel was due to Hagel not backing him in the 2008 primary election.

Proving once again that you are an idiot. Pre-school teaches things that help with hand-eye cordination needed to hold a pencil, a crayon, a pair of scissors, puzzles. It teaches the alphabet. It teaches shapes, sizes and colors. It teaches the calender and basic knowledge of the weather. It teaches organization of personal items and school supplies. It teaches basic health habits and food groups. It also jumps starts the love of reading by being read to. It provides the basics of art and music, the playing of instruments along with basic movements used in dance and excercise. It teaches the names of animals and about nature such as the seasons.
In general, it prepares them for school. Kindergarten is not just fun and games anymore and if a child has the skills needed for the next level of education chances are they will develop at a faster rate and not fall behind.
I volunteered at my children's pre-school as often as I could, so I have a pretty solid idea about what is taught.. You should try it sometime.

Brainwashing applies to any age – and the younger the subject – the more dangerous. And calling names doesn't solve any issues – speaking of childish behavior.

Brainwashing? You are seriously delusional. You are saying that education is turning our children into Hitler youth? That IS childish behaviour. Beyond what most people think of education.
I can bet, you are a so-called right-to-lifer. Willing to stick up for the unborn as you turn your focus away from studies that say the majority of BIRTH DEFECTS are caused by domestic violence? Now, you are saying that educating our children is unAmerican?? Go back to school because you prove you are as dumb as a box of rocks.

Obama was brainwashed by Jeremiah Wright and Bill Ayers. He didn't have a father figure – and unfortunately, these individuals and others he associated with hate America. We now have a president who hates America. Obama intends to instill the same philosophy in our youth. He's already succeeded with most college students. They're being indoctrinated.

There is a saying Cynthia & Jean

Those who do not learn from History are doomed to repeat it

Take a look, a serious look at Germany in the late 30's.. you will find interesting parralells to todays call for gun control.
Also you will find that indeed that youth were indeed indoctrinated at an early age and were the most fanatical of his supporters. On the surface those "laws" seemed harmless enough that is untill the camps started showing up..

So lets stop talking about the late 30's and start talknig the 13 centurey in Scotland.. With their weapons outlawed Scottish men drille with Rocks to try to retain the skills to defend their Clans...

It seems that a tyrant always removes the "weapons" of the defeated to retain a tyranical control over them...

History is repleat with examples of this... and specifically the History of England is why the second amendment exists..

No tin foil hats.. just more common sense and a will to choose our lives and not live in Obama's Candy Land vision of the USA.

Oh those poor brainwashed kids in the red states of Oklahoma and Alabama. I am sure they are all lining up now to serve their new 'Fuhrer' Obama??? You would think that having state programs for pre-k education would turn them over to the dark side but no, they are still very much Republican and voted against Obama.

Bill, don't you ever get tired of sounding crazy? Gun control? Really? Did Reagan turn into Hitler? Did Bush Sr? Or is this just another typical political swipe against the Democrats and this President? Yeah, that must be it. There is so much gun control going on there are actually millions of guns in the hands of private citizens! Even after you ban AR-15s, there will still be millions of guns in the hands of private citizens! I don't think banning guns will get anywhere with this gun happy country but to discourage every conversation about gun control is the height of irresponsibility, if not a little fascist.

So what's next for your vision of the '4th Reich'? Rounding up the Jews?

It doesn't matter, the Pre-K thing will never happen because of money. I think the president may have just thrown it out there for the teachers union. There was also a lengthy study done on head start and the results show it to be a bit underwhelming. Personally I wanted to be with my kids as much as possible during those formulative years, they're little sponges at that age.

I agree it is an uphill battle also because of the cost. This is something that the private sector or some collaboration with local governments will have to deal with if they want it badly enough. Let's face it, anything that has a 'Universal' tag on it will be almost impossible to get passed.

Cynthia – You are right. Kindergarden is not fun and games anymore, it is essentially vital to a child being ready for the first grade, and for those who do not have an enriched home environment before the first gradenot being left behind. It means they will not be left so far behind those whose parents do provide a home learning environment. Plus, it also keeps the children who have a home learning environment from not becoming bored due to an over-burdened first grade teacher needing to bring too many children up to speed.

Totally agree, NAM VET. I believe tenure is a very strange concept – how can it apply to professors, and not to any other profession? Besides the good professors, the others with their own agendas are given the authority to manipulate and brainwash minds, and never lose their jobs, because they're protected by tenure? That's breeding corruption and abuse of power. Like this president – it's time for some impeachment hearings. He lied to the American people about our national defense during and after Benghazi so he could get re-elected. That is much worse that anything Nixon ever did. And on top of that, Nixon was a better president.

A shortage of software designers in the US is forcing

Work by Maria Donovan Fitzpatrick of the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research looked at student achievement in Georgia as its pre-K program phased in. She concluded that the costs outweighed the benefits by a ratio of six to one. Nearly 80% of enrollment is "just a transfer of income from the government to families of four year olds" who would have attended preschool anyway.

Today about 1.3 million kids, or 28% of all four-year-olds, attend state-funded pre-K, an increase from 14% in 2002. The empirical case for this expansion rests on two academic studies, the Abecedarian and Perry projects, conducted four and five decades ago. These experiments showed vast returns on investment, the source of Mr. Obama's claim that every early education dollar generates $7 down the line. But Abecedarian and Perry cost between $16,000 to $41,000 per child per year (in current dollars), the higher end comparable to Ivy League tuition. By comparison, Georgia spends $4,298 per child.
