Obama's India visit not embraced by all![]() MUMBAI, India (CNN) - The normally bustling city of Mumbai is moving at a much slower pace. President Obama’s visit, coupled with the Diwali holiday, has forced people out of town, indoors or beyond security barriers. As I drove to a local television studio to be interviewed about the president’s trip, I passed several signs, some with large painted portraits, welcoming Obama to town. But as I quickly learned, there is a great deal of frustration and in some cases anger behind all the red carper treatment. Obama pays homage to GandhiMUMBAI, India (CNN) - For a man who used to hang a framed picture of Mahatma Gandhi in his Senate office, President Obama declared that checking out a museum honoring the Indian independence hero's legacy was "pretty cool" on Saturday. Shortly after landing here for his first stop on a 10-day tour of Asia, the president and first lady Michelle Obama quickly headed over to this city's Gandhi Museum, a three-story home where Gandhi stayed when he was in Mumbai. It's now full of historic photos and posters as well as a library with about 50,000 Gandhi-related works. On the first day of her 3-day visit to India, Michelle Obama paid a visit to a local mentoring program here at Mumbai University. Michelle Obama slipped off her shoes and jumped into a game of hopscotch with students from the Mumbai based “Make a Difference” program. The game is just one way they help teach children English. On the road Obama pushes U.S. jobsMUMBAI, India (CNN) - Eager to fend off any criticism that he's globetrotting just days after a disastrous midterm election, President Obama unveiled about $10 billion in new contracts for U.S. exports to India on Saturday as he launched an aggressive push to show his trip to Asia will deliver jobs back home. "The United States sees Asia and especially India as a market of the future," Obama said at a meeting here with business leaders from the U.S. and India. "For America this is a jobs strategy." |
