Obama and Hu to confer over Korean crisis

Washington (CNN) –With top U.S. officials continuing to declare that help from China will be key to getting North Korea to ratchet down the crisis caused by Pyongyang's deadly strike on a South Korean military installation, President Obama is planning to call Chinese President Hu Jintao in the next few days to discuss the critical situation, according to senior administration officials.

The phone call will come just days after Obama held a bilateral meeting with Hu on the sidelines of the G-20 Summit in Seoul, where administration officials were quick to tout the fact that it was the seventh face-to-face meeting the two leaders have had since Obama took office.

First Family helps D.C.'s less fortunate

Washington (CNN) –The Obama family spent part of Wednesday afternoon helping low-income familes in Washington get ready for Thanksgiving dinner.

The President, First Lady, and their daughters Sasha and Malia along with Mrs. Obama's mother, Marian Robinson, filled up bags with donated groceries, and delivered them to the less fortunate at Martha's Table, a community based non-profit organization in the nation's capitol.

Saved from a November shellacking

THE PRESIDENT:  I have my two trusty assistants here - (laughter) - Malia and Sasha for one of the most important duties that I carry out as President.

Before everybody heads home for Thanksgiving, there is one official duty I am sworn to uphold as the leader of the most powerful nation on Earth.  Today, I have the awesome responsibility of granting a presidential pardon to a pair of turkeys.  Now, for the record, let me say that it feels pretty good to stop at least one shellacking this November.  (Laughter.)

At 21 weeks of age and 45 pounds each, Apple and Cider would normally be prime candidates for Thanksgiving dinner this year.  Instead, the two California-born turkeys will get a new lease on life today when President Obama pardons them in a Rose Garden ceremony at the White House.

Obama celebrates the 63rd anniversary of the National Thanksgiving Turkey presentation, which will include sparing the two birds whose names were chosen from more than 200 suggestions by California school children, a White House statement said.

Apple is the official National Thanksgiving Turkey and Cider is the alternate.  After today's ceremony, they will head to George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens for a Christmas display and then to live out their days in a specially built enclosure, the White House statement said.

While the tradition of the president receiving a National Thanksgiving Turkey began with Harry Truman in 1947, the first official presidential turkey pardon occurred in 1989 by George H.W. Bush.
