President injured in basketball game

Ed Henry provides the inside scoop from the White House North Lawn.

Washington (CNN) –Apparently no good deed goes unpunished for President Obama, who was trying to make sure he didn't get a flabby belly after Thanksgiving but wound up with a fat lower lip instead.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said the President received a dozen stitches after getting hit with an errant elbow during a Friday morning basketball game with White House aide Reggie Love and some unidentified family members at the Fort McNair military base in Washington.

The elbow belongs to Rey Decerega, who works for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. According to White House aides, Decerega went up for a shot and turned into the President, who was playing defense and accidentally got hit in the mouth.

"I learned today the President is both a tough competitor and a good sport," Decerega said in a statement released by the White House. "I enjoyed playing basketball with him this morning. I'm sure he'll be back out on the court again soon."

"After being inadvertently hit with an opposing player's elbow in the lip while playing basketball with friends and family, the President received 12 stitches today administered by the White House Medical Unit," said Gibbs. "They were done in the doctor's office located on the ground floor of the White House."

Aides said Obama was given a local anesthetic while receiving the stitches, and doctors used a smaller filament. That increases the number of stitches needed to patch up the tear, but it makes a tighter stitch so that the President's scar on his lower lip should be smaller.

Obama frequently plays basketball, works out on a daily basis, and was undoubtedly playing Friday to work off some extra Thanksgiving calories. An official White House menu showed that in addition to turkey and the usual trimmings, the First Family dined Thursday on six different pies - including apple, sweet potato, pumpkin, banana cream, cherry, and huckleberry.

Asked by CNN if Decerega will be getting a presidential pardon, a top White House aide laughed.

Yes, what great news this is. CNN never fails to dissapoint when it comes to priorities. World War 3 is on the brink of starting, and they post a huge breaking news banner saying that the President cut his lip.

      Yellow journalism at it's finest.

Now 12 stitches is NOT newsworthy????

C'mon, folks. A little levity for the holiday. A news organization like CNN has plenty of room for human interest stories. If you want to read about the Korean conflict, they have plenty of articles on that as well. The entire website does not need to be dedicated to "serious" news, nor would most of us want it to be.

      • mac texas

Are you talking about the Korean attack? It has been the top story on CNN for two days......maybe they thought that even slow readers could read it in that period of time and decided to put something newer up today. By the way, you might like to know that Fox has it too.

As if Fox news does have their priorities straightened? I'd say CNN usually does the best job cutting the fat in the unworthy news topics. Also, who said a cable news channel has to only cover one story per day? That sounds more like a high school class...

He's right, cnn never really has their priorities straight when it comes to breaking news. sure fox has the lip story, but above it they're keeping us updated with everything going on in North Korea. CNN puts up a breaking news banner that makes you think a bomb had just gone off or something.

What more do you want to be reported about Korea? Nothing new has happened in the last couple of days. Do you want them to just keep reporting the same thing over and over again? I'm sure when something new develops in Korea it will once again take top priority.

        November 26, 2010 at 7:23 pm |

You'll actually notice that one of the two main articles on CNN's front page right now is "S. Korea names new defense chief amid war rhetoric." There is nothing wrong with having the occasional light-humored article like this. Also, you used "it's" when you should have used "its." Have a nice day!

So I guess you're also pissed off that a few headlines below this they're reporting that Auburn beat Bama, surely a complete waste of space and important to absolutely no one when the only thing happening in the world that we should care about is a 5'2" psycho that should have been assassinated 3 decades ago is pitching a tantrum and setting himself up for a good ole ass whooping...

So a little respite from the pressures of the job and a chance for some exercise to keep sharp is a bad thing? It seems unfair to expect the president to not find a way to relieve some stress. Your line of reasoning could be followed to suggest he not take time out to sleep.

You DO know that people can reach him in a few seconds if there's an emergency, right?

@Paulie....Please give it a break. This is Thanksgiving and though I don't support, probably, any of his policies can you keep your blatanly boring comments to yourself. This was a cute article and I think it is great that he plays basketball and goes elbow to elbow with his friends and staff.
The more important question I have is was it a Democrat elbow gone awry or a Republican elbow gone astray? Or do you think he was playing with any Republicans.
And I could care less if N. Korea gets blown away from the map. Let's keep the war stories where they belong, in the war story section. LOL.
I think he would be afaid to cheat on Michelle. She would clearly win that physical battle. SMILE AMERICA.

It just makes it seem like he isnt putting any thought into his job! We are teetering on the brink of war with North Korea (possibly China)! Is he deep in thought and concerned for our nation? Our taxes are about to go up for ALL of US (which he also lied about). There is going to be inflation because of it? Does he care or is he goofing off playing ball?

PP- you people trip me out. Would it be better to play poker, sail, golf, swim, bowl, or play touch football instead? This is what other presidents have done. Does the president no deserve to have an hour of rec time now and again?
Bush's ratio of vacation days was nearly twice that of Obama but I didn't hear you attacking his lack of attention to the economy or other important issues.
Perhaps people who criticize a president for taking an hour or two off should spend their weekends doing volunteer work instead of all that TV time.

So CNN reports on something I am sure Obama would have preferred receive no coverage at all and you conclude his administration is "a joke." That is quite a level of logical reasoning you have attained. You are probably one of those people who has no idea we have had 10 consecutive months of private sector job growth whereas the Bush Administration ended with 13 consecutive months of private sector job losses. You probably have no idea that the stock market is up about 70% since March of 09 just a few weeks after Obama took office. You must certainly be one of those easy to influece dupes that the GOP with their big money allies have convinced that things are actually getting worse instead of better since Obama took office. Keep watching FOX, that is where people who already have their mind made up and want to be spoonfed GOP talking points belong.

Everyday I am amazed of just how ignorant people can be! Who works a job and have no days off? Whether the President play basketball on his time off that is not causing unemployment to be an issue in the United States which exisited before he was President. Our state here in Alabama, unemployment rate has lower recently and I thank God for that! Hatred is like a cancer, it eats you alive. Just because you desire to walk around with this hatred in your heart and not have the sense to thank God for what you are fortunate to have, evidently you have a computer and services for the internet, are you depriving yourself of those luxuries because there are families that exist in this world without those luxuries. Actually, Paulie, tax increases cause deflation, not inflation. Tax breaks cause inflation.

Think about it (if that's not too tricky for you) - if your taxes rise and your take-home pay drops, are you able to spend more on the things you need? No, you have to find a way to spend less. Since this is true of everyone, demand drops. When demand drops, prices drop as well. (We see that with gasoline all the time.)

Tax breaks put more money into your paycheck, which lets you think you can go out and buy something that you wouldn't otherwise. If everyone's doing that, then demand is going up. When demand rises, so do prices.

It's really basic economics. But I'm going to take a wild guess that you're a Republican, which - by definition - means you don't understand basic economics.

Dateline 2001-2008: "at a time of the war on terror, and two wars with American soldiers dying daily, W (and the GOP congress) enjoyed the highest number of vacation days, smoking cigars and sipping wine at their ranch back home in Texas."

Whereas a basketball game lasts, what, 60 mins? That's shorter than one way flight to/from Texas, buckaroo.

By the way...how did you spend your day today? Help out at a soup kitchen? Donate your time to a charitable cause? Oh...maybe that was you that went to donate blood, or get registered on a bone marrow registry? Sign up as a potential organ donor? No...wait. I'm sorry, maybe you went to see if you could brighten up a child's life and looked into fostering a child! No? I bet you sat your fat lazy ass in a beaten up lazy boy so you could watch your shows on TIVO thankful that you were able to beat out that little old lady for that last highly desired toy by shoving her aside at the last minute when you waited all night in your local Walmart for the late night/early morning sales. By the way – the toy wasn't made in the US – so your money just went to a child sweatshop in a some military run government country – which our economy thanks you for by the way. Yep...I voted for him....but I also work towards a solution to what I see is a problem. What have you done other than open your pie hole?

      • nodack

You are an idi0t. So the President of the US isn't allowed to get exercise now or it's a GOP crime? it doesn't matter what he does you guys would complain about it.

Obama could get rid of the deficit, zero out unemployment, end world hunger, cure all forms of cancer and FOX/GOP would write a negative story about it and FOXs followers would write in and complain about it.

        November 26, 2010 at 6:28 pm |
      • EA80

You fools are so predictable. An hour workout in the morning does not equate to goofing off or putting the N. Korea issues aside. I swear some of you are so simple minded that you could be hypnotized by mice. Paulie, your federal taxes are not going up; maybe you should check your states income tax or local sales tax. Last time I checked, the Stimulus cut taxes for 95% of the country, and I was one of those who benefited. Stop parroting the stupid and actually do some research. I swear, it's like the "patriots" in this country revel in making America stupid, so pathetic.

        PP,

I think you should look at the amount of days that every Republican president has spent on vacation before making comments about Obama playing basketball. Bush spent more time on vacation then any other president and that was with September 11th, and two wars going on. So read up on your facts before calling Obamas administration a joke next time.

        November 26, 2010 at 6:58 pm |
      • jbcal

So now we're to belive that you're privy to all that goes on at the White House? How do you know what going on there? If you do know, why are you wasting time here when you should be putting some of that knowledge to work?

        November 26, 2010 at 7:05 pm |

This is Obama, not bush. Obama can take care of all three, and never break a sweat. You neonutz are just pitiful.

Could be worse... we could be sitting here reading a news article about Obama clearing brush on his ranch for the 100th time instead of sitting as his desk in Washington overseeing a war...

Seriously, CNN? What's next? "President Obama Has Über Zit!" There is a possible war situation between North Korea and South Korea. Cholera is killing people in Haiti. People are dying of starvation in Africa... and you publish a stupid story about President Obama getting stitches in his lip due to a basketball game? I didn't read the story, by the way. I am changing my homepage to http://www.guardian.co.uk/ Their current head story is about how a US General recently was duped by a Pakistani shop keeper. You covered it in a sensational-type manner but you'd think you might want to take this a little more seriously rather than feed the masses pablum. Oh stop complaining. He's allowed to take some time to exercise.

        November 26, 2010 at 6:16 pm |
      • Aaron

Um, FIRST, I would take a President who takes time to take care of his body anytime, whether it be running (Clinton, Bush) or basketball (Obama). Tthere is certainly nothing wrong with taking time to get some regular exercise. On the contrary, exercise helps make you have a sharper mind and improves your alertness. As for the subsequent, and predictable, Bush comment. He did NOT spend half of his presidency at his ranch. In fact, neither he, nor Obama have taken an inordinate amount of time off. Sad that the truth doesn't always work for your arguments, but truth is our responsibility. My biggest beef with Obama is not his basketball and golf time, but the amount of time he spends trying to sell policies, political allies, etc. That is where he has far outdone all of his predecessors. That will also, ultimately, be his undoing.

Obesity, family unity, improved overall health, not to mention a few good laughs over fat lips and black eyes. Laughter is also good for improved health and stress relief. Another plus, cheap entertainment. Beats spending a fortune at the movies any day.

I wonder why some people use the article "the" before the name of the country 'Ukraine'. That is a mistake.
In English, when referring to countries, the article "the" can only be used when the name of the country after it is not a proper noun, for example "the United States", "the United Kingdom", BUT NOT in cases like Argentina, Canada, Mexico, Spain, Brazil, Ukraine and so on. How correct would it be to say "the Canada" or "the Russia"??? It's just horribly incorrect.

The rest of the world doesnt celebrate Thanksgiving either and problems are mounting so why do these elected officials with the most important jobs in the world think they deserve a paid day off? "Toddie had a good idea...He says we oughta bomb Soool."

"Seoul, Madame Vice-President. But that's the capital of South Korea."

"South, North, they're all Commies, right? Who cares?"

"Madame Vice-President, South Korea is our ally. A democracy."

"That's not what Rush said on Fox."

        "So...This is North Korea, right?"

        "Yes, Mr. President."

Are you SURE smoking kills more people? Although I'm not positive (I don't want to research it), I'd bet that obesity kills more people than smoking. Think of it – diabetes, heart disease, and all the other problems associated with obesity. Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending the practice of smoking. My step-father died of lung cancer because of it. I'm just interested in accurate statistics.

I think it is admirable that we have a chief executive who is setting an example of physical fitness for the nation.
As a country of obese people, we need to examine how we live.
Instead of participating in the mob mentality of mass consumerism, let's try to become a fit nation.

Define nights and weekends. You do know this thing about time zones. Are we supposed to be so superior now that everything is done on our time during normal working hours? Of course, we are the GOP America – stuck up, stuck on ourselves and totally and absolutely STUCK.

        November 26, 2010 at 4:43 pm |
      • Dar

Exactly. I don't know what people here think the President is supposed to be doing, but he's an executive. He has a metric crapload of people that work for him and advise him on subjects. The President is just a person; he's not the top mind on science or military or the economy. That's what advisors are for, and they're the ones who do the majority of the work. Do you really want the President (Obama or otherwise) to be the one sitting at his desk all day, coming up with military strategy and economic solutions all on his own?

        November 26, 2010 at 4:46 pm |
      • regertz

He started the day before work with a basketball game. Unlike your typical Republican president who would be off hitting golf balls on his corrupt billionaire friend's estate. If he'd been using the WH gym you'd be ranting about the expense. Nonsense. Glad the man takes a few to keep fit. Good luck with this one, Mr. P. I know I'm glad we have a sharp guy on the job.

        November 26, 2010 at 5:51 pm |
      • heyzues

I believe the ones commenting on why should 'he' have a day off only have a frame of reference to their own jobs. As you know, when you clock out of Waffle House or the Quickie Mart, these people do not think about their jobs. However, when the President has a 'day' off, he is never more than a few seconds from a mode of transportation that will move him to a safe location and ALL modes of transport for the president are a mobile office WITH the ability to manage the nation in a time of war, natural disaster, or if Rush Limbaugh is in town.

People get over yourselves. Bush spent 65% of his presidency in Crawford Texas. he dictated his personal wars and profit making schemes quite well from there. Obama on the other hand takes 2 hours to play basket ball five minutes from the white house, and the Republicans scream how he has forgotten the nation, isn't doing his job, etc...

Bush was stuttering through a Kindergarden story book when 9/11 occurred and didn't contact ANYONE for more than an hour and this is before he was on AirForce 1... man, you old people forget alot

The WH Medical Unit is located on the ground floor? Is this article written by a Brit, or is the MU in the basement?

    November 26, 2010 at 3:51 pm |

It is the basement, yes, which would be considered the ground floor of the White House. The first floor is above the ground floor.

      November 26, 2010 at 4:15 pm |
    • Jared

Basements are below ground. Ground floor is the first floor. Technically speaking the could say first floor or ground floor and be accurate. Just like elevators with a G instead of a 1. Not a British thing, its an accurate architecture thing.

Obama is like 6 "2" and in better shape than me. I also think you are probably willing to fight dirty if you rise to the leader of the free world. Obama would win most attacks by putting his hand on your forehead while you swing wildly. I can't stand the guy, but I am not stupid..

        November 26, 2010 at 6:26 pm |
      • heyzues

The President of the US does more in the first 30 minutes of his day than you do in a week working for Walmart Paulie. And no, leaning on the candy rack oogling the women walking by you does not count as 'store security work'..

Honestly dude. The president has a full time job, not your minimum wage earning BS you call a job. If something happens anywhere in the world, he is briefed within 20 minutes morning, noon, night, middle of the night, 3am, whenever, it doesn't matter. he has meetings from 6 am until sometimes well after midnight. he has a Military attache that literally sits outside of the private residence with the Nuke codes 24/7 365. He has an assistant on call in the office IN the white house 24/7 365. he has phones that will directly dial any leader in the world within 10 feet of him, yes even when he takes a poop. he is the President. If Kim John Ill decided to have toast instead of a rice cake this morning, Obama knows before the bread is put back in the pantry. So don't beieve for a moment that just because you can forget about ringing up cigarettes after yoru 8 hour shift, that the President is in any way shape of form 'off' at any moment during his term. I believe the last sitting President that had time off while in Office was Reagan. And during that time he was not legally the President, he had to sign over the powers of the Presidency to Vice President G. HW Bush.. So stop being a tool

        1. It's spelled 'uneducated'.

        2. Statistically, Democrats are far more likely to have achieved higher education than Republicans. I believe the number is statistically astonishing, too; in the tens and tens of percentage points.

        3. Face it. You're just not that bright.

        November 26, 2010 at 4:11 pm |

        Mr. right
        You're wrong:
The majority voted for him because he ran a cerebral campaign, aimed at thinking people, as opposed to the McCain campaign, which focused on fear, using the "pit bull" VP candidate, who doesn't know North Korea from North Dakota.

He would be if you were American. If you're a US citizen and don't consider him your president you hate our country and should move your seditious tail to some dictatorship, I didn't like GWB but the elected POTUS is the president of the whole country.

    • Hungaraso!

Then you are presidential-less and you should not say NOTHING about anything that goes on in this country. In fact, leave. I had to ENDURE YOUR president for almost an effing decade, day after day of that monkey and NEVER said anything like that EVER. Efffyou.

What a foolish comment. I'm a conservative, didn't vote for the guy because I disagree with his policies, and probably won't vote for him in '12. But he is my president, whether or not I'm glad about that. The libs were fools when they whined that Bush wasn't their president and conservatives are fools when they say the same about Obama.

      November 26, 2010 at 5:43 pm |
      • Greg

A very mature and refreshing comment. I'm glad we can disagree and still consider each other Americans. More people, on both sides, need to approach politics with your attitude.

Either you're a traitor for rejecting a preseident elected by the will of the majority and under adherance to the US Constitution, or you're a non-US citizen. Which is it?

      November 26, 2010 at 6:01 pm |
      • Foz

Traitor? I think you should rethink that comment. Under that definition anyone calling for impeachment would be a traitor.

Heaven forbid the man should sleep and eat...perhaps play with his kids....walk the dog now and again....kiss his wife....be a human being....and for a moment, play a passion that clears his mind and recharges the batteries.... you should be greatful to have a leader that sets the example of a balanced life....three hours on the court wouldn't have solved the world issues....but a person with a clear mind, body and soul can do wonders...

I thought he was going to roll up his sleeves? Apparently, that was lost with the change he promised as well. Stop drinking the Kool-Aid people, he's been on vacation for some time now. How about going on The View, or Comedy Central? What about campaigning for all his buddies? I'm not saying that the other side of the aisle is any better, but you all love to believe that I did. If they didn't post it, then the whole country would be making up conspiracies on how it happened, on why the prez has a fat lip and stitches. I think it's a good example, as said above for our country to show the prez is fit and does regular things. We as a nation are fat, lazy and want everything drive-up so we don't have to walk.

      GObama!

Paulie – you need to grow up. Even the Pres needs a break every once in a while. As has been stated in this thread many times, W took more vacation time than any other President in our Nation's history. At the cost of millions of tax payer dollars I might add. (Ferrying POTUS to and from Texas on AF1 with his security detail gets a little expensive...) All for what? So he could go cow tipping....so please...try to refrain from the bigotry

Oh great, now all the republicans are going to start using this article as a tool to say how much Obama is wasting taxpayer's money on personal hobbies. November 26, 2010 at 3:58 pm |

      • Oh god not basketball

LOL are you serious?? You know what, you're right. He shouldn't be enjoying himself at all. NEVER. Actually, they shouldn't even let him sleep. From now on, OBAMA, you don't have the right to sleep. Not until every single unemployed person has a job. NO EATING EITHER!! You have to be fed intrevenously, otherwise you'll be wasting valuable time.

in case you forgot there are multiple crisis going on in this country – no to show him playing games outside like a child doesnt show him in the best light does it?

        November 26, 2010 at 4:20 pm |
      • Oh god not basketball

First of all, it's spelled "crises" when you are using that word in it's plural form, but I didn't expect you to know that judging by your response to my post. Second of all, how stupid can you possibly be. Do you really expect him to work 24/7? Did you ever think that maybe sometimes he needs to clear his head by doing some type of activity that he enjoys so he can be better focused to perform his duties as President? Wow. That is all I can say. People should be require to go through some type of evaluation before being allowed to vote.

        November 26, 2010 at 4:45 pm |
      • SKB

Well unfortunately there is no brush to clear at his ranchette so what would you suggest would be a good thing to do in his down time?

        November 26, 2010 at 6:40 pm |

so now not everyone deserves the vote (how american of you!) in Obama's case you make a strong argument though.

That's what happens when you play sports and are active. You get hurt sometimes. Bush would have been napping or choking on a pretzel or starting a war he and his cronies don't to have fight in.

    November 26, 2010 at 3:59 pm |
    • ENKY

I don't begrudge our president of enjoying a few games, but don't discount Bush as an athlete. When he first came into office, the secret service had to look pretty hard to find runners who could keep up with him.

With any luck it will keep his face off the TV since he has 12 stitches in it. At least we wont have to listen his boring lying speeches. Maybe now he will do some actual governing.

    November 26, 2010 at 4:00 pm |
    • Fightin' Democrat

Exhibit A, and the problem with the modern political discourse: People don't believe what they hear, even if it is fact, because they hate the person speaking. Why do they hate him? Because he speaks "lies," which is another word for facts you don't believe. It's a vicious, self-fulfilling attitude. =)

      November 26, 2010 at 4:22 pm |
      • Oh god not basketball

I don't think this guy Paulie has any ability to grasp the concept you attempted to explain to him. He probably can't even define half of the words you used in your post. It's very obvious. Scroll up and look at my post and you will further understand why this guy has an IQ of about 64, and I might be being generous.

        November 26, 2010 at 4:52 pm |

I actually got my taxes lowered with my income tax I sent in for 2009 like 98% of the people in this country. Hey paulie maybe if you worked instead of waiting for your handout while watching Fox you'd realize that.

        November 26, 2010 at 6:42 pm |
    • ellen

Some reasons why President Obama speaks publicly so often: He does not need the media to filter what he has to say. He does not need to write reminders on his hands. He does not need to practice what he wants to say, enjoys spontaneity. Has a long record of communicating effectively. Does not engage in double talk as some others have done. If you do not want to hear him, use your channel changer!

      November 26, 2010 at 4:46 pm |
      • ThinkAboutIt

I have to take issue w/ ellen when you say Obama enjoys spontaneity. Have you ever listened to him respond to the rare question when he has not controlled those questions being asked? He stammers, he pauses, his anger is easily seen, and he trips over his words. His sentences are filled w/ ah..ah..ah. No, he only seems to speak well because he Is rehersed and reads well from the teleprompter.

        November 26, 2010 at 5:02 pm |

Why do we have to keep listening to you complaining about every move the Pres. makes? Why don't you get a job you have too much time on your hands and you're still annoying. Like a fly that needs to be slapped.

a real man would be running our country and planning his next move maybe trying to end the wars and holding congress accountable for whats going on, maybe not letting all our taxes go up like he promised (and creating massive inflation) – not playing childrens games – he would be doing his job as leader of the free world.

      November 26, 2010 at 9:44 pm |

oooh that one was witty paulie... Also how do you continue to rant about this, and how his tax increases are going to create huge inflation when you have already been explained economics and told that tax cuts create inflation not raising taxes... this is probably the reason you didn't graduate the 8th grade because you can't listen when things are explained to you... Finally how many people go to the gym on their way to work or on their way home, just because it was a work day (one which most Americans had off anyway) doesn't mean he can't take time to work out like many other people do. The stupidity and ignorance of the republican party truly blows me away, maybe you should stop commenting on this post if there is so much work to be done, you could be using your time better and make a difference with it rather... or maybe like everyone else including the president you have something that you like to do... and that helps you relieve stress... so why don't you get off his back for doing the same thing you are?

      November 27, 2010 at 8:01 am |

Some presidents worked for freedom.... Some worked for innovation... And this one works for tomorrow's basketball game and writing childrens books. I'm sure China's president isn't playing basketball... Maybe that's the problem.

I hope you thank god you live in America every day and are allowed to say racist comments like that on a public forum because in a lot of countries in this world you would not get away with verbally attacking the leader openly like that... Good for you asserting your first amendment right... but people like you are why America cannot advance because we are stuck in this game of hate and name calling like we are 4th graders... By the way I'm willing to bet however that at least President Obama knows that National Socialist Party v. Skokie (1977) is the case that has set precedent to give you that right, unlike Mrs. Palin who simply cannot bring herself to remember a single Supreme Court decision she agrees with.

Just because you're black (so am I) doesn't give you the right to make the rest of us look bad.

        November 26, 2010 at 7:56 pm |
      • Seriously?

Oh, I see. So you are a self-loathing Black man. That's kind of sad.

cant wait until all our taxes go up and the inflation it creates on a cash-strapped america we all will feel like we got a fat lip

    November 26, 2010 at 4:14 pm |
  60. Vortilex

I don't think America really cares if Obama needs a dozen stitches. If anything, this will just fuel the Tea Party's anger. I can see them now "Why is he playing basket ball during national stress? Sarah Palin! Glenn Beck!" or something along those lines. If his life were in danger, such as if he had been elbowed in the throat and had difficulty breathing or had gotten a concussion, then America might be interested.

    November 26, 2010 at 4:14 pm |

Basketball is a pre-existing condition according to the insurance actuaries, so Obama will have to pay for the stitches himself.

    November 26, 2010 at 4:17 pm |
  66. Eric Jackson

So let me get this right;North and South Korea are on the brink ofwar and Obama recieving stitches for an elbow to the lip during a basketball game becomes BREAKING NEWS? Come on People! IT'S BASKETBALL! What, will person who did the accidental elbowing be on the terror watch list? What is it with the media these days? Please stop dumbing down the news! Breaking News is someone attempting to break into The White House, someone attempting to do harm to our President, or Bin Ladin captured! NOT THIS! GOOD GRIEF!

    November 26, 2010 at 4:17 pm |

What a joke.I love how my tax dollars goes to build this 1 term prez a basketball court, while i work 60 hrs a week to feed my family.Good job america voting in a useless politician, who cares more about LeBron then bringing those troops home he promised in his election run.

    November 26, 2010 at 4:18 pm |
    • jhm

It is absolutely rediculous how many of you are upset that the President takes a day or even a couple hours off to have a break. I am sure he works his far share of 60 hour work weeks, not to mention the lack of sleep he gets. No one said your tax dollars built this basketball court nor did it say Obama was the one that put it in at the White House. It also mentions nothing about Obama being a LeBron fan over his duty of being President. Where is the respect?
Sounds like you are one who is quick to judge, would you be doing a better job?

      November 26, 2010 at 5:06 pm |
    • Seriously?

Hm. Maybe you should take some of your "tax dollars" and spend them on reading lessons.

      November 26, 2010 at 9:47 pm |
    • Softship

Maybe you wouldn't have to work so much to "feed your" family if you'd stop feeding them caviar and try feeding them steak and salad instead.
Either the "dr." is a lie (in which case it might have helped to get a good education) or the "necessity" for working 60 hours is a lie (if you're truly a "dr." you should be able to feed your family with 40 hours of work, too.)

I'm willing to be that Obama normally works 60 hours a week, too. So what's your issue?

      November 27, 2010 at 12:03 am |

Are most of you kidding?? Should be doing something else with his time? Can't the man take an hour to relieve some stress and have some fun? I live in Canada (born in the US), but you republicans are too much!! You're glad he was hurt? You all are the problem (narrow minded Republicans). Why not shut up and try and come up with some solutions to the countries problems? All we hear in Canada is that the Dems do nothing right, but not once have I heard of a republican plan that doesn't involve setting roadblocks to get in the way of progress. Most of the trouble stems from your prez that you kept in office for 8 years, so grow up.

Obama haters, were Bush put out of commission for eating a pretzel, many of us would have said even worse things about him probably. Although, there would have probably been less venom (the kind associated with racism) than the Obama haterst show in their remarks about him. You must admit, that this involved no hypocricy which his a hallmark of Republican (publican) extra-curricular activity.

To those offering the ultra-intelligent remarks to the tune of, "well, he should have working...": Are you really that stupid and hateful? It's the day after Thanksgiving for one thing; half the country has the day off. He doesn't deserve one, too? And as far as the nights & weekends crack – he's the POTUS, chief, so he works most of those, too. And how is Obama playing basketball any worse than W going for a run or bike ride when he was Prez? Frankly, I'm glad that both of our last two Presidents set an example of the importance of physical fitness. That's much better than the alternative, someone like Cheney, who never took care of himself at all and was in the hospital with heart problems every other month...

I know this comment greatly angers his supporters that I would actually expect the President and Congress to be doing their jobs on a Friday. They obviously dont want to be shown that they dont give a damn that the country is on the brink of war with North Korea, we are still involved in 2 wars. Obama lied about not letting taxes go up and he got hurt fiddling while Rome is burning and we are supposed to feel sorry for him getting hurt when he ought to be doing things to help our country (and not just basketball day – every day).

Hey .. great idea here. To help balance the budget, Obama could see raffle tickets. Basically he can raffle off a chance for YOU elbow the president right in the kisser ... just $20 a chance. With the level of dislike for the man, why I bet they would sell LOTS of those tickets. And it could be a monthly raffle!. Add in having the event shown live on TV with advertising from GM and Chevy and various Banks supported by Obama, and we have a real economic winner here. Far better stimulus than anything done to date.

You mean the people that Bush sent over there? I'm confused. He's cleaning up your prez's mess 'jnsmith'. You are so effing narrow minded it's scary.

      November 26, 2010 at 4:47 pm |
    • Paulie

I think he means the wars Obama and his congress never voted to end and the soldiers he sent as troop surges and the sailors on their way to North Korea.

      November 26, 2010 at 4:53 pm |
      • JackieInDallas

@Paulie. the military involved in troop movements in Korea are part of either the permanent troops we have there as a service to our ally, South Korea (and at their request) or troops that are honing their skills on manuevers that were planned long before this latest mess by North Korea. Manuevers are planned months, sometimes a full year, in advance. You obviously are not aware of how slow turns the wheels of the miltary planning! Without an official declaration of war, the President (although Commander in Chief) cannot order military forces anywhere without the support of the Pentagon and Congress.

        November 26, 2010 at 4:58 pm |
      • Paulie

give me a break jackie we all know why the battleship was sent there for maneuvers and it wasnt planned a year ago

        November 26, 2010 at 5:07 pm |
    • JackieInDallas

I"m confused, @jnsmith. Do you mean the men and women that President Bush sent to Iraq despite all evidence that there was no military need for them to be there, the men and women serving in Afghanistan who should have been brought home during Bush's second term, or the men and women serving so that you can sit safe in your house and complain? As a Vietnam Era vet myself, and the daughter of a World War 2 and Korea vet who served 21 years, those of who serve this country do not mind serving when and where needed. Many of us DO question just what constituted NEED in Iraq, and question our continued NEED in Afghanistan. The President would like to get our military out...however, he has to work through Congress since he is not a dictator, and we are not officially at war. Complain to your Congressmen and women.

      November 26, 2010 at 4:54 pm |
      • Paulie

Our president and congress could vote to end both wars and not let our taxes go up tomorrow if they wanted to so what Bush did or does is pretty much irrelevant. He's too busy playing basketball! Face facts.

Good for him that he was exercising, good for his family that he was home. Sorry that he was hurt, but at least he got medical attention right away - millions won't have that opportunity thanks to the recalcitrance of House and Senate Republicans, and the influence of the radical right.

I'd like to take this opportunity to tell those who hate President Obama a helpful hint...if you don't like him, that's fine, but to accuse those of us who think he's doing a pretty decent job under the circumstances that we think he is God is both blasphemous and untrue. I'm very aware of his failings, and the many failings of the previous occupants of the White House. But unlike you guys, I expect my President to make mistakes or make decisions I don't like. I understand that he has to make decisions from the position of what he can get, not what he would like. It is called "compromise" and it is something that radicals of any ilk do not understand.

In honor of Thanksgiving, I would encourage all of you to go back and actually read the Constitution and the Bill of Rights - not just depend on talking points from any party. Read the Declaration of Independence and see why our forefathers actually fought for freedom from England. Yes, our system has more than its fair share of problems, and yes, there have been bad decisions made (since Day 1 of this Nation), but we have a LOT to be thankful for! In China, many of you would have lost your homes, your jobs, and maybe your lives for saying such things about the leader of your nation. You can get on CNN and rant and rave as much as you like because we allow those freedoms to our people. But that applies to ALL people here, not just the ones who agree with you. It was best said by Evelyn Beatrice Hall when she said "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." Try treating the others on this blog with that type of respect, and grow from one who only screams to someone who can discuss without rancor differences in political beliefs.

    November 26, 2010 at 4:43 pm |
    • JackieInDallas

Oh, and before anyone objects, YES, I know that the quote "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it" is usually attributed to Voltaire, but it was actually said by Evelyn Beatrice Hall in her book, "The Friends of Voltaire". HIS comment, which she was paraphrasing, is also apropos, though: "Think for yourselves and let others enjoy the privilege to do so too."

This situation in Korea has been brewing since the 1950s. This latest escalation was probably handled in a special meeting in the White House with his National Security Council members and his advisors while you were still passed out on the couch semi-comotose from turkey overdose or while you were watching football from your recliner. At least he was in touch with his people since he was home...unlike Bush who flew over New Orleans in AirForce One without landing, and didn't respond at all to the need for emergency supplies for over a week after Hurricane Katrina. Or when President Reagan was at home in California "resting" right after our troops in Lebanon were attacked and 241 killed.

To the screwballs who singled CNN for covering a story they did not believe was newsworthy, did you bother to read the news at CBS, ABC, NBC, Yahoo and/or Fox today? They also covered this story. So why do criticize CNN for covering stories that you believe are fluff and not the other networks?

welcome to the real world. there will always be racism here and in the rest of the globe in every single country. why is it racist to make jokes about his lips or whatever. if a black comic was making fun of a white president I am sure youd find it entertaining.

    • Oh god not basketball

Only in the south where the republicans reside and the average IQ is in the 60's. Dey blame that gosh darn Obamer fer all of America's problems.

Most black American basketball stars are from the South and proud of it, prude.

        November 26, 2010 at 5:56 pm |
      • texrb

By your statement about the 60's IQ of southerners makes them racists, makes you a racist. I've lived in the North and the South and racism exists in both, thanks to the government and racist activists. I lived in Boston in the '70's when the supreme court finally got to the North and required that they desegregate their schools. They responded with riots and Molotov cocktails thrown at school buses with black children. You need to study your history. There is a big difference between the abolishing slavery and racism. The North was every bit as racist as the South. And your statements cause me to believe that your IQ is very low.

        November 26, 2010 at 6:22 pm |
    • Paulie

really because last I checked Democrats and the KKK came from the south – in fact slaves ran north (to the republicans) for freedom. did you know Senator Byrd (D) a former KKK sat on congress til he died last year – he single handedly filibustered the civil rights vote in the 1960s for 48 hours.

      November 26, 2010 at 5:35 pm |
      • texrb

You might mention to the person who whose dissing southern racism that in in the early 70's when the supreme court ordered Boston to desegregate its schools, they responding by throwing Molotov cocktails at school buses with black children in them. Tell them to check their history before they throw stones thorough glass houses. The North, where I have unfortunately lived a few times, is a racist as it gets.

This is ridiculous. Even the queen doesn't get this much coverage. He's not a figure of royalty or a damned celebrity. He's a politician. I just returned from oveerseas and watched how the media treated their prime minister...like a regular politician only giving screen time when the story is about national interests. I know he tried to make himself into a deity in his campaign, i fell for it too, yes, but this is too much. I can't stand him.

I see. So because you "can't stand him" you don't want to read any stories about him. Here's an idea: don't click on them?
Or are you somehow blaming the President for the amount of press he gets.
Did you ever stop to think that perhaps this is a very relevant story? Don't you think people might wonder why he has stitches in his lip the next time he gives a press conference, etc.?

      November 26, 2010 at 10:01 pm |

Ah that's the problem. Because you can't stand him you think there is too much coverage.

You know that the media, CNN in this case, are just itching to find out who elbowed the Prez. Because although we're laughing about, it certainly seems like the fool who did that, wasn't thinking of the repercussions to his playing ROUGH... idiot.

You're playing BBall with the President of the United States Of America. NOT some punk in streets, not some other street baller... the President of the United States Of America.

You don't play dirty, rough, stupid and or aggressive, you hold restraint, you keep your arms down, you don't get stupid.

But this is what sports does, it makes reaching that meaningless goal the only thing that matters, its like a stupidity thats part of playing sports. The hell with the health or well being of anyone else... its about teamship! ...and all that BS.

Interestingly, there's this CNN video interview of that football guy, sorry, my memory does not retain sports figures and or figures very well, an interview by Dr. Gupta about the sports football culture that encourages a player who was hit and may be suffering a concussion to keep playing for the team. This sort of ties into this in someway.

The president should of been presentable and joined his family in welcoming the WH Christmas Tree this year, but of course, "the buddies" effed him up. A-holes.

It was us independents that blew it in 2008. Although I did not vote for Obama, a majority of us non-party affiliated independents did. Obama went form Chicago Community Organizer to Senator to President so fast, that he caught 53% of the country off guard. Add McCain to the opposition (whom I held my nose and voted for), a biased media, and a dislike for Bush, and suddenly we elected a socialist for President without knowing what hit us. After massive damage had been done with Nationalized Health Care, bailouts, and triple-trillion dollars deficits due to incredible government growth, the independents woke up and neutralized the Obama socialist juggernaut this year. Now in 2012, we need a new direction (Rubio and Scott sound good), but anyone who can get this incompetent, socialist government out of office and start reversing the damage that has already been done will do. Time to get started on that agenda now.

@Pauli. GWB spent more time away from office "relaxin at the ranch" than any presedent in recent history.

You must understand that although Obama is our President, he is actually a Chicago Community Organizer, who suddenly became a Senator and then suddenly the President of the United States. You are being too harsh on him to think he would have a clue on how to handle the most important job in the world. Let's give him the next two years, send him back to Chicago, repeal the socialist laws he passed in his first two years then be done with him. We now have the congressional ability to shut down anymore more of his socialist agenda.

      November 26, 2010 at 9:17 pm |
      • Seriously?

Socialist? His healthcare "agenda" has a lot of GOP ideas in it. It's also MARKET BASED. I could *possibly* see your point if it were single payer healthcare, but it's NOT.

Obama went from Chicago Community Organizer to Senator to President before the citizens of this country knew what hit them. Based on his election platform, many independents (NOT ME) let ourselves be blindsided, were naive and actually elected this man. Of course, the republicans with McCain made that decision easier even though I held my nose and voted for him anyway.

We did not know we elected a socialist as president (shame on us). By the time ObamaCare was shoved down our throats, most independents woke up to the fact that we had elected a socialist president and in 2010, unfortunately after much damage had been done with ObamaCare, bailouts and runaway deficits and debt, we woke up.we effectively shut down his socialist juggernaut in the 2010 elections. Now in 2012, we have an opportunity to nominate a ticket (perhaps Rubio and

Do you also know he has access to telephones and other such forms of communication to keep apprised of situations around the world? At least he's in Washington within easy access to necessary assets instead of a ranch somewhere in the middle of nowhere where the last guy seemed to hang out a lot. I'm assuming you have to be at work because all that you comment is "blah blah blah. He's playing basketball instead of working. blah blah cry." You're whining like a child. Were any of you "look at this guy playing hoops while the world burns" out there denouncing that lazy, slothful, self indulgent Cheney; or "Every weekend in Texas" Bush?

What is the big deal about the President being the breaking news about getting stitches?! why does it bother you the ones complaining about it? do you think you can do better at the job then run for office if not then just do what you are good at, complaining! too bad they don't have jobs for complainers! oh & about our President, because he was playing baketball instead of worrying about Korea or the health bill, taxes, wars, etc. u think it would have made a big difference for him to change the world?!

You will never see Obumma setting the example by doing some real PT. Instead he gets into his back on the block mentality and shoot some hoops with some of his other wanna be Thug friends. Smokin his Newports regressing to his street days, I could imagine the the court talk as we speak. Yo Yo Boo sup man (giving a three minute handshake) what be hangin at the honky house? I'm just sayin. I know how the brutha's get around the round ball. Instead he should be running an early morning PT session with some of his secret service boys. Organised Sports is not the way the Commander in Chief should hold a PT session. We need a Real President!

Wow SemperRick, how ignorant can you be? "I know how the bruh's get around the ball." After the entire article the only thing you can say is that the President should be doing more type of physical fitness than basketball. Wow!!! I could understand if you didn't think the article deserved top spot on CNN.com, but your comment is the reason CNN put these type of articles on the top spot. For simple minded people, such as yourself, who would rather read, and discuss their opinions on what type of sports the presidents plays, instead of reading what's really going on in the world.

I agree with Paulie in the sense that, yes, there is a lot of things going on right now and the President needs to put priorities before holidays. Half the time, he isn't even working anyways, so how has he earned any vacation time? Half the time he's golfing, having beers, or on some liberal tv show pushing his agenda. That said... The less President Obama does, the better for us! We can afford his vacations, we can't afford him bailing out the failed companies or sending money to Africa to teach them how to clean their own private areas.

I am proud of a president who takes time out to enjoy himself. Shows how much he is like one of us – certainly not some stuck-up guy who ducks out to his fancy East Coast beach house every weekend. Obama is a decent man and trying very hard to undo the tremendous damage – politically, financially, militarily – his predecessor left behind. Give him credit for succeeding on so many fronts; and resolutely persisting with the agenda he presented during his campaign. You teabaggers and repubs need to shut up and let him have his 4 years without expressing hate and venom at each step.

    • Havent seen a good lib joke yet! keep trying....

Easy to sit back and criticize, you will see, people say over and over that government never does anything, then when it does, they say it is too much and they don't want it. This is why throughout history leaders force change. People are dumb. The guy split his lip taking a break, sure beats a stiff who caters more to his fkn yard then his country. They can screw. Takes a pair to do something, takes a slit to sit on the bench and spite your own team with bitterness. They will bite off their nose to spite their face and the only winners are, you guessed it, the same old players, big corporations, the military of course (no not your kids.) the rich, politicians, everyone that does not need it will get their piece, everyone BUT you and I. I love my country, isn't it great? we stand for good and justice, its fantastic, funny they all said the same. Take a load off Obama, you won't miss a thing. Meanwhile most of us are working this weekend due to a recovering economy and at least a sign of growth that has been largely ignored. Thanks again bro.

I thought America had come much farther than this. There are so many racist silly people in this country. Someone said that only ignorant, uneducated people voted 4 Obama because of his skin color. Are u serious?! And 2 many people act like he played basketball 4 24 hours or something, this is his exercise dumbasses! Bush worked 4 maybe 2yrs. out of the 8 that he was in office and Obama plays a pickup game and he's slacking? Give me a break! Go Obama!!

@paulie...there are just many so ways you can write about the POTUS not doing his job for the 1hr he exercised. For your information, as president, he gets to pee, bobo, eat and yes exercise. Get off your mountain high behind and shave some pounds off your waistline instead of hating. If thats all you got about this president, I think he is good.

News doesn't have to consist of a declaration of World War 3 to be a legitimate story. Bush's choking on a pretzel and falling off the couch, injuring his face, was a major story. Why not Obama's lip? News is news. I want to know when my President is injured and how. Stop reading if you don't see what you want in the headlines. 1. Obama's opposing candidate was not much of a challenge

      2. Obama won greatly in part b/c a good portion of black ppl who knew nothing about politics except that Obama is black voted merely for the fact that he is black and it was "history in the making". So really, Obama brings nothing to the table – big deal that he is the first black president – it doesn't do any good unless he is good at his job...

He isn't good at his job–but he sure is good at spending taxpayer money – for healthcare that doesn't work and for global trips thinking he is a hot shot that can get the olympics to the US – and he failed at that too!!!

Obama hasn't done anything special for this country.

Darlene you hit the nail on the head. There is so much hate in this country it's crazy. Historically, there has never been so much anger towards a president. Congress has fought Obama since day one. It wouldn't have matter what he was proposing. What should have happened was the total rejection of Bush's ideas as he put the country in the financial toilet. He started the war in Iraq with no budget for it. If Obama had done that he would have been impeached. Between Bush being in bed with the corporations, oil companies and banks and then starting the war in Iraq and no animosity from the American people at all. Let's talk about the 800 gorilla in the room. Obama is black. Period! If Americans really cared about their country they would want the President to succeed in which case congress would work together for the common good. That's never going to happen. I hope Palin runs in 2012 as it would please so many of the ignorant people in this country. I mean she criticizes Michelle Obama for encouraging children to eat healthy food? She's an idiot!

It was us independents that blew it in 2008. Although I did not vote for Obama, a majority of us non-party affiliated independents did. Obama went form Chicago Community Organizer to Senator to President so fast, that he caught 53% of the country off guard. Add McCain to the opposition (whom I held my nose and voted for), a biased media, and a dislike for Bush, and suddenly we elected an unqualified man for President before we knew what hit us. After massive damage had been done with Nationalized Health Care, bailouts, and trillion dollar deficits due to incredible government growth, the independents woke up and neutralized the Obama far-left juggernaut this year. Now in 2012, we need a new direction (Rubio and Scott sound good), but anyone who can get this incompetent government out of office and start reversing the damage that has already been done is essential. Otherwise, our America is finished. Time to get started on that agenda now.

    • Robert

He's going to be a one term president, and I will laugh and ask, Remember all that change Obama promised? Do you even remember what specifically he promised, or did he just promise "change"? And his supporters will complain that the Republicans blocked him from making changes, or the economy or the war in Iraq or Afghanistan distracted him from being able to make his changes. Then I will remind them that Obama promised to be a bridge builder and bring the parties together, and in four years, not only did he fail to make those changes he promised, he failed to keep his promise to be able to work with the Republicans. Then we (Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, and Independent voters alike) will elect a Republican with either traditional Republican stances, or a Republican leaning independent (with the typical 55-45% margin, which someone will still manage to declare a "sweeping victory"), and we will begin to dig ourselves out of the massive economic hole that Obama has managed to dig for us, our children, and our grandchildren. And hopefully we as people will realize that "change" for the sake of "change" is not always a good thing, and that EVERY politician runs on a platform of change, because no one in their right mind running against an incumbent will want to be elected on the grounds of "more of the same", which is basically a vote for the other guy.

      Vote NObama 2012!

You might think about the following concept: yes a qualified person should be president. Who else would be better qualified than one who has the most current experience being one? It would make most sense to re-elect President Obama instead of wasting years training a new one – going only on the hope that he might work out.
President Obama has done a good job so far – he has prevented the economy, which was on the brink of disaster (thanks to his predecessor), from actually collapsing. You didn't really expect him to be able to fix the results of 8 years of bungling by his predecessor in just two years, did you?

I didn't vote for Obama..but I believe he is doing his best, with what was handed to him. Has anyone noticed how much he has AGED?? The man is working his butt off. I wouldn't want that job if it paid 10 million a year, by the way, it pays much much less then that. Give the man a break, get off his back. He is not getting ANY support from the REPUBLICANS or half of his OWN party. He doesn't have a magic wand. He needs cooperation to achieve anything. No Matter WHO is in office...no one will be happy until ALL of Washington learns to play nice. AS for the Korian crisis...China will take care of them...they don't want this to esculate...it's bad economics. 294. Politics or Problems

Can we focus on problem solving and not politics for a minute. Obama has made tough decisions on many no win topics like healthcare and bailouts. Republicans, Tea Party Members and short sighted independents aren't offering any real alternatives. Just simply playing politics or expecting everything things to change overnight without having to deal with the consequences required to implement the change.

For example do you like Healthcare for all including those with preexisting conditions or NOT. Don't pretend that it's just "Obama Care"? Somebody will be upset, either those suffering with preexisting conditions or Insurance companies, just choose and move on. But don't pretend that there is a perfect answer.

Where are the New House Members and Senate members now that it's time to take action on slashing the budget? They are hiding and won't join committees that can actually make a difference. Yet uninformed idiots continue to support an empty agenda that is only designed to discredit Obama. What a joke. Where's their plan?

Why are they holding up a treaty that will allow us to inspect Russian nuclear facilities? That's a national security issue that the average independent voter knows nothing about and could care less in the grand scheme of politics. Noone would reelect Obama just because he gets the treaty back in place, but it's being blocked and could allow terrorist to obtain nuclear materials. Yet these tactics are being supported and admired.

Obama is trying to implement real change and not playing politics. So, just watch your elected officials over the next 24 months and see if they do anything beyond BLOCK Obama. I don't call that putting the public's interest first.

They are blaming Decerega. It is a futile effort to hide the fact that Sean Avery was playing. Afterward, the President wondered why anyone would allow such a Tool to play in the WH basketball game.

It is amazing that a story about the President playing a basketball game also brings out the haters. The fact is that he is the most qualified president we have had since FDR really. He inherited an absolute mess and no mortal was ever going to get it completely turned around in two years. My hope is that the far right tea partiers nominate their heroine Sarah Grizzly Girl. That will assure an Obama landslide in 2012.

When you play mens games, sometimes you get hurt. Get over it. I use to tell my kids, unless you are bleeding from an artery, don't come in and complain. They both said, "what's an artery?"
Right now this president needs to be paying close attention to every single thing that's happening that effects this country. Illegals, mounting debt, now real industry for jobs, printing money to pay debts isn't a good thing either, putting an end to the Fed for sticking it to us at every turn, generating jobs, immediately, not unionized, not government run to improve road, and other infrastructure that is way to old, free education all the way to college, but not everyone is college material, just teaching reading, writing and arithmetic up to the 6th grade, school everyday but Sat and Sun, 9 to 5 and I could go on and on. President Obama is leaving us with the impression that he is not interested in making this a better country, but designing things that drag us down. It's very sad. We did have a great country.

For Rick52 up above, ripping on Paulie and republicans for not understanding economics. Yes, tax breaks create more cash in your pocket...but no, that does not increase DEMAND for products. It increases the ability to buy those products if you choose, but demand is an entirely seperate entity that has nothing to do with availability of cash. Demand is based on quality and interest in product. But....thanks for demonstrating why democrats tend to know nothing about economics.

And for those of you getting upset at republicans ripping obama, deal with it. You torched W when he was working, and when he gave up gold, you said it was an awful gesture (but. NOT giving up basketball is more presidential?). Obama has spent more time overseas during his first two years as president, than any prior (along with spending more money than any president, in any FOUR year term (including bush in all 8 years) prior). Deal with it. The guy is not doing a good job, and criticism is due, just like the last president received.

Just as we have jobs! and like us he is still allowed to have a personal life outside of work as we do! unemployment rates have been coming down like he promised! the only thing i really dont agree with is government wanting to cut pay for the military heros! those people put their lives on the line for all of us! they deserve every bit of their pay! some of the governtment officials however can afford to take cuts tho if they really wanna get our country out of debt! other than that obama is doing an awesome job with trying to fix things!! Nice to know we have a President that's willing to take one on the chin for us anytime and keep working towards making our tommorows brighter. That is the true definition of class.Regardless of what some may say there is no doubt he has the heart and best intentions in mind for all Americans and a pretty good jump shot to boot! Get well President Obama.keep your guard up America still has love for you man!

@ paulie – you are a sad and bitter person, and to top it off, pretty pathetic, too.

There is nothing wrong with the president – or anybody else – taking a few hours for sports and recreation. You can rest assured that the president is working far more than 40 hours a week. He's averaging more work a week than you have ever averaged in your life.

Of course, the world doesn't stop on holidays. It doesn't stop at night either. Do you expect the president to be awake and working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? If you do, you obviously have not idea what effects sleep deprivation have on judgment. (Or are you experimenting with that right now?).

If you were ever employed, did you ever partake of recreational activities after work, on weekends, or on holidays? Did you consider that akin to playing basketball on your employer's time? What is the difference between your recreational activities outside of working hours and President Obama's recreational activities outside of working hours?

I doubt that you belong to the category of people whose taxes would increase of the Bush Tax Cut would expire. So why are you whining about "increase of taxes"? I'm quite sure yours will not increase. (Are you even paying any federal taxes?)

Why should Obama hold "special sessions of congress" to promote agendas that he doesn't believe in? You seem to disregard the fact that his and your agendas do not agree with one another. That is the fate of people living in a democracy. Majority rules means that minority needs to either live with it – or do something about it. Why don't you just run for president?

Last, but not least – many racists are racists against their own race. For example when the have inferiority complexes. So I don't care what color you are, that does not automatically make you non-racist.

I don't think that Paulie is the leader of the free world. If he takes a break on the holidays, it doesn't affect you or me. 0bama and his wife have taken more vacations at greater expenditure than any president before him. Bush was widely criticized for vacationing in Crawford, a vacation that cost the taxpayer little. He was always met by war protesters at Crawford. I've noticed that although 0bama has continued on the path Bush carved regarding war, even escalating the war in afghanistan, there has been little protest. The 0bama's seem to confuse themselves with royalty. Maybe to the people magazine, 0prah watching, hybrid driving, east/west coast bankrupt state residents they are royalty. Of course it illustrates there is a huge swath of educated ignorant.

We all must admit, the undisputed President of this blog is Paulie who enbodies the profile of a typical HATER so very common these days.
A minority president has definitively framed the fact that racism is here to stay.
Hey Paulie, why are you so fascinated by Black people features? Because that's really what's going on. You want it but can't have it, right paisa'? Get a minute of life.

    November 27, 2010 at 4:10 am |

They hate him because he's black? This comment would be funny if it weren't so sad. You are the true bigots and that is what the libs counted on when the nominated a black man. Although he is supremely unqualified for the job, 0bama was elected by blacks because he's black. That is also why they are standing with him even though he is doing the country more harm than good.

I would gladly vote for a black man like Alan West who has a SERIOUS background in leadership.

Accidents like this happen to the best of us, hope he gets well and continues on. In regards to all of the bizarre comments on this post about this not being newsworthy, that statement is correct, but it is fodder for the unimaginative. I truly believe that North Korea must be dealt with immediately. If China does not want to participate, that is their decision. If no other country than S.K., and the U.S. will deal with N.K., then we need to pull out of S.K., and let China, and all of their slave labor deal with Nuclear dust blowing in their direction from Kim Dong "stoopid" SOB!

This is ridiculous... Since when is the President not allowed to take ANY personal time... So Obama likes to take his on a basketball court instead of a ranch in Texas, who cares? My guess is you really don’t but you use it as an opportunity for conservative propaganda to instill fear in the American People that this man we elected is playing games while the world is coming to an end around us... We need to stop with all this negativity towards each other that prevents us from getting anything done. We need to learn to work together towards a common goal we as Americans should have... Nobody is perfect not Obama not Bush not Anyone, but if we could stop being so ignorant towards each other we could actually put together our heads and do some good. Where one democrat has strength a republican may have a weakness, and where one democrat has weakness one republican has strength... together though, we can actually do something.

Great to see Obama get punched in the face. That's what he has been doing to America ever since he was elected King. Let's see if he pushes his way to the front of the line now to have his fat face on TV! HA! Never saw such an arrogant person in my life - ALWAYS wanting to be on TV and travel around in his personal pimp mobile (Air Force One) wasting our money. Isn't it time for him and Shelly to take a taxpayer-provided helicopter back to NYC to see a play? They should - no one minds all of the disruption. Geez.

Funniest story in a long time. Glad to see him suffer after he makes us suffer daily. He's out playing basketball....meanwhile 20,000 troops are in harms way in Korea AND we still don't have any job growth. Buy, hey, wht should that take away his time playing golf TWENTY SEVEN TIMES (!) this summer and pimping around the country. That's our Activist-In-Chief for you.

CNN – please notify your television anchors that the proper way to refer to any sitting president is "President" and last name, not "Mr." I caught this story just a few minutes ago on my television and was shocked that your anchor did not know better than to say, "Mr. Obama," when referring to the president of the United States. Like the man, hate the man. The title is what the title is. Any journalist of quality would know that. This slip makes your entire network look uneducated at best, racist at worst.

Kudos to nulyte. Double kudos to nulyte who wrote exactly what every post here should have included:

While most of us are not government contractors, MILLIONS of MIDDLE CLASS AMERICANS are in similar dire straits. It costs $1200 a month just for health insurance for my wife and me. While the federal taxes of MIDDLE CLASS AMERICA pay for the health insurance for every federal politician on the government dole. And, in case they (and WE as taxpayers) have forgotten, WE pay their salaries; WE pay for their pensions; WE pay for their children’s education; WE pay for their vacations; WE pay for their transportation. In fact WE pay for everything they have...well, almost. Corporate America has the upper hand here; CORPORATE AMERICA has purchased soul of nearly every senator and representative (federal on down); the very people who are SUPPOSED to REPRESENT the HUMAN BEINGS whose votes elected them to office, but rather represent the BIG MONEY that financed their campaigns.

How else do we explain EXXON/MOBILE profiting $45 BILLION and paying ZERO FEDERAL TAX. Yet, slime like Alan Simpson propose to cut social security benefits to those MIDDLE CLASS AMERICAN TAXPAYERS, but want to lower (hey, how much lower than zero can you get....Well, I suppose we can read the bloated tax law to find out if such a thing is possible) CORPORATE TAXES. Yo, Alan. What is it about your sociopathic “Deficit Reduction” plan, and your psychopathic economic and political philosophies that you don’t understand would cause HUMAN BEINGS, including you own family, to send you e-mail calling you a son-of a-bitch?

Can WE as AMERICAN CITIZENS REMEMBER that the people WE vote into office are accountable to WE THE PEOPLE? How is it possible that WE let these criminals get away with NOT representing OUR best interests?
At the end of the day, WE THE PEOPLE are to blame for the fix we find ourselves in. You see, not only are those who are supposed to represent us accountable to us, but WE are accountable to ourselves. By allowing these sociopaths in government to PROFIT by committing CRIMES against AMERICA’S MIDDLE CLASS, WE enable and encourage them to continue the abusive policies against US. In the end, WE must protect OUR best interests.

Have we been dumbed down, or what?

To everyone complaining about this not being "newsworthy", I grant that many of the articles CNN runs are complete fluff pieces (for example, every single article they publish about Snookie and others of her ilk). But don't tell me this shouldn't be considered news. Not every story has to be earth-shattering, breaking news, and when pictures started popping up of Obama with stitches on his lip, you can bet the American people would want to know why the leader of the free world was injured. Again, I agree that CNN has been publishing a lot of garbage lately, but THINK about what you say before you start complaining that this isn't newsworthy, because that's just incorrect.

Bush spent more time than any president in history away from the White house. 2 wars and the beginning of the end of the American economy went down during his watch and he's off playing golf and dicking around on the ranch...nowhere NEAR the White House and none of you friggin republitards say a word. Obama has an early morning pick up game on White house grounds, gets stichted up, and spends the rest of the day working, and we get an endless stream of idiotic remarks, many pushing the limits of racism. Whats wrong with this picture?

The man wants to clear his head a little and stay in shape. What did you idiots do all day? Sit on your fat asses, stuffing your faces full of crap watching Fox?

We're all very sorry that Obama doesnt take every chance he's got to get in the press blathering about the good he's done, the way bush used to, but i guess its just not his style. Get way from Fox for 15 min and do a bit of reading about what teh current administration has done. 15 min. will only be a fraction of the time you'll need to cover it, but its about as much as Bush did through his entire term.

Please read a copy of the US
Constitution. The Pres is not a King. Our nation's troubles have not been caused by, nor will be solved by the actions of this one man. As I tell my students, if you have questions and or concerns about the actions of the government, than please contact your elected officials; all of them, Legislative branch in particular. Additionally, it is critical for you to understand that state legislation affects us more than national decision making. We do live in a democratic Republic, organized according to a federalist structure, after all. If you choose to vent in a public forum like CNN, then you should be able to share with the people who are actually making the decisions that impact the nation and state. Boy, ignorance runs high in this country. Why is there so much hate? Unwarranted hate at that? Are those of you making these harsh remarks truly that full of hate and ignorance? Is it just me or do we, as a people, understand that these types of attitudes are those that keep us from becoming a society focused on making each and every one of our lives better. How about making your comments about the things you can do to aid our country in becoming a better one. The snide remarks and racial insults come from little minds. I personally think not one of you could handle the job that Obama's been handed. Heck, you can't even talk about domestic and international issues in writing, let alone in your mind. So look in the mirror before you comment and stop letting your small minds lead the way. Stop the IGNORANCE!!!!!

Sit on your fat behinds, stuffing your faces full of garbage watching Fox?

We're all very sorry that Obama doesnt take every chance he's got to get in the press blathering about the good he's done, the way bush used to, but i guess its just not his style. Get away from Fox for 15 min and do a bit of reading about what the current administration has done. 15 min. will only be a fraction of the time you'll need to cover it, but its about as much as Bush did through his entire term.

My goodness! I would think that common sense indicates not every news everyone would like – some you may and some you may not. If you dare think all news has to be the one you think it should be, then you may have to considere creating your own channel. I enjoy seeing the hearing that the president has time for himself and to play basketball despite the heavy burden on him.

Those of you complaining of Obama not passing tax cuts or being the 'change' that helps the average American, I would love to share these little facts with you that are post-Senate/House re-elections: This is in Time magazine, not a biased network like CNN or Fox News:
"So much for soaking the rich Washington State declined to impose a new income tax on its wealthiest 1%. The proceeds would have gone toward education and health care."
"The unions benefited under Obama, but they can no longer count on more federal stimulus funds for state-worker payrolls, and with state budgets stressed, the GOP is targeting public-employee pensions and benefits for cuts."
So, explain to me. how are the Republicans the 'voice of the average middle-class American'? I would LOVE to know. You know, since the trickle down effect has worked so well. When Warren Buffett and Bill Gates come out and say that the trickle down theory is a huge joke, that should be a wake up call to our representatives that the rich need to be taxed more and the poor needs to be taxed less. Pretty clear to me that the Republicans have no interest in doing that. Which is obvious to anyone that actually pays attention to polotics and does not rely on opinionated news sources that don't give facts without sugarcoating them to benefit their party (BOTH parties are guilty of this). I'm tired of Obama being destroyed by Republicans as the enemy who doesn't have the interest of the people at heart. I am thankful the Republicans now have the majority so people can actually see their agenda, as opposed to blaming Obama for everything.

I find it really funny that ppl make up reasons for the president being elected. How abt the american ppl were ready 4 a change. The Bush administration had worked their magic for 8 years. Wars were started that shouldn't of been many of our young service men n women were killed fighting a war that was more personal to the Bush family then 2 the American ppl. While the actual threat still hasn't been found!! Its hard to read all of the racist comments but of course we're all aware of the closed mind ways of this country so.. I forgive all those on behalf of every African American..

Prior to "home boy" getting elected in one of his speeches he stated that he would bring all our troops home. After being elected he immediatly sent troops to Afganistan. Hurts when you can't blame Bush, doesn't it?

This is not national news. Guess they are trying to either ward of rumors that Michelle bopped him or that he's trying to get sympathy from the public. If Ray was a Republican, even more would be made of this. They don't say what his affiliation is, but I'm guessing not Republican. Either way, this is not national news.

The majority of this country is niggers and border jumpers, think it's time to go back to Africa and Mexico, you ugly, thuggish animals? And now we have one in what is supposed to be the most important job in this country? please, get him the fuck out of office and let someone else clean up Bush's mess. Were you glad that the TYRANTS, BUSH/CHANEY/RUMSFELD GROUP and their PUPPETS staged 911, which ultimately put us into two illegal, ill-begotten wars; costing us trillions of dollars and many, many innocent, beautiful lives? AMERICA WAS SET UP ON THE ROAD OF DESTRUCTION TO FAIL BY YOUR GREEDY, POWER-HUNGRY ALMIGHTY REPUBLICAN PARTY, MR Joe! THEY TURNED THE NATIONS BANK BALANCE LEFT TO THEM OF TRILLIONS INTO ZILCH! @ Liz Carter. Racism knows no boundries. Anyone from any race can think that their race is superiour. When u say people do not like B.O. because he is black that makes u just as guilty. White ppl or anyone else is capable of not liking the President for his platform and not his race. If he were white I would still hate how he has ruined this country! % only voted for him because he is black when actually he is also half white but u dont mention that side of his culture do u?
