White House: faith and finances![]() WASHINGTON (CNN) – The Obama administration is turning to faith to figure out how to better protect consumers. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau hosted a roundtable on Tuesday with ministers, rabbis and other spiritual leaders to get their input on how the financial crisis has affected their congregations. Elizabeth Warren, who last year was tapped by President Obama to oversee the creation of the bureau, said consumer protection is rooted in religious and moral traditions. “The laws have changed, but the basic notion that lending should not be used as an instrument of advantage-taking is deeply embedded in our collective consciousness,” she wrote on the bureau’s blog prior to the meeting. White House getting "specific" on Egypt tone![]() The two leaders spoke by phone Tuesday about the transition process that will shape Egypt’s future. In a readout provided by the White House, Vice President Biden urged an “orderly transition in Egypt that is prompt, meaningful, peaceful, and legitimate,” and that it “produce immediate, irreversible progress.” Yes he can! Quit smoking that is![]() WASHINGTON (CNN) –It’s the smoke-out heard around the world. President Obama’s campaign slogan “Yes We Can,” has now been replaced with “Yes he has,” well at least when it comes to smoking. According to reporters attending a roundtable with the First Lady, Mrs. Obama confirmed that her husband has kicked the habit. “Yes, he has,” she said. “It’s been almost a year.” The First Lady couldn’t provide the exact time when the president tossed his cigs away for good, “because he never smoked a lot,” she said. President Obama has openly discussed his long and difficult struggle with cigarettes. When asked about his habit in 2009, the president said “I don't do it in front of my kids, I don't do it in front of my family, and I would say that I am 95 percent cured.” Carney...Is he ready for his close-up?![]() WASHINGTON (CNN) - White House aides have been quietly preparing incoming press secretary Jay Carney for his briefing debut next week. CNN has learned that the process, led by deputy spokesman Bill Burton and Josh Earnest, who had both been in the running for the press secretary job, has been exhaustive. All last week Carney was prepped by current staffers “simulating the daily briefings,” said Earnest. A bi-partisan breaking bread![]() To be a fly on the wall...at today's White House briefing Press Secretary Robert Gibbs announced the president will host a lunch for Republican Congressional leaders tomorrow. The guest list: Speaker John Boehner, Majority Leader Eric Cantor and Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy. On the menu for discussion–all issues foreign and domestic with heavy discussions on the economy.
