Obama press conference FridayWASHINGTON (CNN) - The White House just announced President Obama will hold a press conference on Friday at 11:15 a.m. to discuss rising gas prices and other issues, CNN's Ed Henry reports. Obama will take questions from the press in the South Court Auditorium in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. This will be his 12th solo press conference at the White House. Why in the world would the President not stand up for the middle class workers and Unions, being attacked by the GOP?
Someone on twitter said we should ask the president about Libya. @Jazz_Katt says the press is not hounding him enough on when the US will take on some leadership.
I agree with @Jazz_Katt. Ask him Why has he wasted so much time while Libyan democracy is being crushed by a madman? As Ann-Marie Slaughter (sp?) said on AC360 last night, not making a decision on a no-fly zone is a choice to support Gadhafi.
What leadership role would you like the President to take. Go with the side that doesn't win we have another war.
The press would rather ask him what he thinks about Charlie Sheen...
I would phrase it this way, "Your inaction with Libya makes you appear weak, how do you address those who view you in that way?" Then I would watch him light up. He gets angry when a reporter puts a little heat on him.
Why?
Because Libya is irrelevant to our domestic concerns. Really... we have 9% unemployment, a ballooning debt, collapsing infrastructure and a failing healthcare system, and you care about Libya? It's a sandblasted country with no agriculture or water.
Further, the consumer price of oil has NOTHING to do with Libya – only localized oil commodities are reliant on that civil war. We can't afford military intervention, both diplomatically and financially. Intervening in the middle east has NEVER been beneficial. The President is smart enough to realize this, unlike the past four.
WAKE UP. The only people who do and should care about Libya are the speculators on Wall St.
Why should we inject ourselves into every world problem? Why have enough of our own before we go spending money and lives on foreign boondoggles.
the last thing we need is for the US to get involved in another country's affairs yet again. We don't have any place in it so we should stay out of it.

Being an African-American male (40 yrs. old), I saw Obama for what he is when he chose concession for popularity over accountability as they relate to investigating the Bush administration. He showed is hand even before he got elected and then when he hired an administration full of bankers. The question should be, why are you so slow in realizing this. Amen, unions are only good (apparently not in all cases) for union members. What about those millions of American people whose professions do not require their membership in a union? What about union dues? I have difficulty believing each and every member of a union is able to afford union dues and does so only because it is mandatory and a necessity, similar to having to pay one's utility bill, it must be done.

2) "president" isn't a proper noun unless it is used as a title.. just like doctor or dumb@ss.. "union" shouldn't be capatalized because unions are oposite of proper..

Because someone had to stop the unions from getting whatever they want. Look at General Motors. They went bankrupt not only because their cars couldn't compete, but also because unions weren't willing to sacrifice in order for the company to survive. They got upset when someone suggested that they actually get paid the lower wage they deserve for sitting behind an assembly line and pushing a button all day. While I agree that unions do provide workers with rights they deserve. I also think that they need to take an HONEST look at what they are trying to negotiate in their contracts. Then maybe the government wouldn't have to step in and stop them from being so greedy.
I would say our president does not care about the middle class or the unions. Why would he care he will have a good income for the rest of his life and he will not ever need a union for anything. They all make promises to us but once in office they do forget who voted him into office. He was to protect the older folks to and the ones on Social security. Huh and to think they are trying to get rid of the sicial security. It is our government who misused the SS system not the old folks. It is more than just standing up. It really has to do with the budget. We can no longer afford Union one sidedness for always increasing wages or benefits. It is just commen sense. Patcee, you are referring to the President of the US. The president has a responsibility to be VERY careful on how they handle crises. Look at what happened with GWB...we got ourselves into all kinds of trouble, and it cost us dearly. Rest assured, that he and his staff are working on these things. Just because they do not advertise them to the public for quick political gain does not mean it is being ignored. People have gotten too used to interventionist policies.
For the same reason Bush backed down, Clinton backed, and every other president seems to have: they haven't a clue what they're talking about when they make promises they can't keep. It's about votes. Don't be foolish enough to think anyone CARES about the individual you. It's impossible to please everyone. Stop thinking in terms of party affiliation, Dems and Reps are the same way. Also, in regards to establishing more sustainable energy sources and finding easier to renew natural resources, please don't summarily and arbitrarily dismiss the potential benefits that would come from legalizing marijuana – specifically from hemp production and usage.

Recently, I've been reading a lot about the world currency. Do you know that Iraq started to trade Oil in Euro's? Do you know, that if the rest of the oil countries followed him, Oil would be traded in Euro's effectively DESTROYING our entire economy. Did the trillion dollars Bush spend help the fact that he saved our currency from plumenting, because that is really the only reason we are still doing MEDIOCRE today. If the world decided on a new currency, there would be riots everyday in the streets.

President Obama needs to take marijuana off the list of Class I Controlled Substances. At least seventeen states have Medical Marijuana laws that are in direct conflict with federal law. This legal conflict is one of the few remaining roadblocks preventing implementation of California Senate Bill 420 (passed in 1996) and major reason other states have not embraced the compassionate use of medical cannabis. Why can't this ridiculous classification of marijuana along side heroin be changed?

: America needs to understand what is more our oil or our lives? I am a Libyan and we need help, we need a NFZ, I know there will be some obstacles but this is going to be history, we need you to seriously think about long term and how taking weeks of discussing just gets Gaddafi to give more bloodshed.

Libya is NOT in a civil war. It's a war between a people wanting liberation and a bloody tyrant.
I would ask President Obama if he thinks he is worthy of a second term. I would ask him why it is that when democrats win elections, they don't seem to matter. But when republicans win elections, they have a "mandate." I would ask him why he is negotiating and compromising away the principles, values, and good governance that we thought we were voting for when we placed our HOPE in him, so easily and without a fight. I would tell him that I would appreciate him much more if he at least fought for the change he asked us to believe in, and lose, then I do by watching him just give it away without a fight so as to appear bipartisan. He wasted a year working with republicans to get the health care bill... and he had already given away the public option... only for republicans to STILL try to block it. He gave in to tax cuts for the rich, for the right to STILL continue to make cuts that hurt our working class and poor. He has given billions to Wall Street, while Main Street is STILL watching their homes be foreclosed on. Let the right shut the government down with filibuster after filibuster... but STOP giving in, and FIGHT. THAT is why we voted for you. And it is the lack of it that will keep us from voting for you again.

I would ask why a more rigorous and passionate investigation of the abuse, torture, rape, sodomization, beatings and murders of prisoners at GITMO, Bagram, Abu Ghraib, etc. wasn't launched? Why weren't these people, supposedly responsible for the American citizens' safety, prosecuted and sent to prison, as they should have been/should be? If these heinous crimes were committed on U.S. soil, against American citizens, these people would likely be prosecuted, unless the military/government would cover that up too. Who knows? Maybe they do. But the Bush Administration made it more "difficult", by performing these disgusting, abhorrent acts in Cuba, at Guantanamo Prison.
American citizens or not, these people deserve justice. Holding people, many of whom are innocent, for years without charges and not allowing them legal representation for atleast the first three years of their time there is reprehensible and insulting to me, as a decent American. An expansive investigation should have been done, and the other 100 photos and the video that were kept from becoming public should be released. I am appalled at the U.S. government and military's response to these disgusting, dispicable actions. Raping, sodomizing, beating, burning, stabbing, shooting, punching, kicking, etc. prisoners is a crime. Doing it to anyone is a crime.
While I have respect for Obama, I am dissapointed that these peoples' rights were not worthy of our government and military's respect. I'd ask why we are standing so strongly by Israel, even though they are occupying Palestinian land to the point of building settlements and erecting the Wall? We keep supporting them, and that support is being used to occupy lands that the international community – including the US – says belong to the Palestinians. The reason why the president does not speak out on the statutory issues in Wisconsin and similar states is two fold; (1) it is a state issue, not a federal issue. The federal government and president do not have the authority to dictate to state government what they can and cannot pass a law about. That is as long as the law is not precluded by a Federal regulation or law. (2) The current Congress (republican house and Democratic Senate) would not pass legislation pro-union and therefore by elevating this issue the president could not act and he will look like a lame duck on the issue. He is smarter to pick his battles until the next election cycle.

I use to smoke cig's and drink booze quite a bit, and be on anti-depressants. Every time i'd go to get help, physicians would just prescribe me a different pill that affected my labido and attitude. I decided to find my own help and smoked marijuana, which helped me ween my cig habit and quit hitting the bottle, on top of that i started thinking positive about everything and eventually stopped taking my meds for depression. Oh yeah, and it helped kick up my sex drive big time. I felt fine up until someone turned me in because they didnt like me and wanted to get the best of me. I got a 600$ fine for paraphanelia and less than an ounce. I never drove when i was high, i'd just sit back and listen to music, paint, or hit up the ol XBox. I took 1 problem in the place of 4. Mr. President, why am i getting punished for something that was actually helping me?

Before the end of every fiscal year, government agencies that have money left go on a mad spending spree on silly things that are not needed so that they can spend all of the money before the end of the fiscal year. They do this so they can get at least the same money that they got last year - sometimes more. Why not save the money not spent in the previous fiscal year and carry it over to the next? In essence, if an agency had $10 million for FY2009, only spent $8 million. Instead of buying new computers with the remaining $2 million, why not carry that $2 million over to FY2010 and top that agency up to with 8 million?
With state jobs, schools, and an increase of job loss due to lack of federal or state funding; why are we still operating with the same tax cuts from the last administration? Of course control of government spending is important, but if there is less money available for state jobs or even to keep or schools running, should we not focus on how to keep the country running?
I know that few if any politicians would run on a platform of higher taxes, but if it creates jobs and/or keeps the country running, should it not be considered? Anyone that says taxes should be lower should have said to keep taxes low, we do it at the expense of the people that work or funded by the state. Our local schools can not survive on just the local taxes. We face a possible double digit tax percent increase if we want to keep our local schools operating for another school year because of state funding was cut.

If investing in the future includes research, then why is only the DOD military research budget growing while the NIH and NSF budgets are stagnant (with only ~10-15% of research grants getting funded)? The Upper Class (and the American System it controls) prevents most Tax Payers from breaking through with a rigged Code of Exemptions that favor the U/C, and through mass marketing that has created the American Consumer and effectively transfers wealth to ensure the M/C remains.
We, the People, are our own worst enemy. We consume, play by the rules (mostly), dutifully pay our taxes (mostly, believing a fudge here and there could somehow be a path to U/C), and believe that our elected representatives act in our interest. College Education: As we all know, the College education cost is sky rocket and the admission rate is getting extremely low due to a big pool of competitive applicants. As a parent, I am worried about my children's chance of being accepted to the College of her choices. We are living in a state where State University doesn't offer the program that my children plan to study (Pharmacy) and there is only 2 Colleges offer this program. Based on past admission rate, these 2 Colleges only accepted the top 5-10% students. So, my question for our President is that what can he do for those students who are below the top 10% who is yearning for the same chance to study toward their career goal?

However you do have the opportunity to make some sound fiscal decisions that will insulate the economy from further deterioration. For example your current budget is slashing the community service block grant by 50%. These cuts are deep and their impact is unimaginable. For many years these funds have supported many great programs in communities across America. I invite you to come to New York City and visit and witness some of the good work that is being done with CSBG funds. I urge you to take a walk in Port Richmond or Bed-Sty sections of New York City with me and see which Americans are being sacrificed through these cuts. Mr.President do you think 50% cuts in CSBG funds will realize huge cost savings to the federal budget even though lack of such funds will incur expense exponentially to federal and state government in many areas of public sector.

Is the current Gas Prices just a ploy to get gasoline above 2.50 a gallon forever like the prices were at one time 3.00 and then went down to 1.75 and everyone went whew. I believe you are a man of Peace, and I greatly value that. This could affect 11 million people over the next year and 3.3 million patients could lose care within the next few months. Cutting community health centers will save NO money in the long run. The end result will be much higher health care costs to our overall system. These costs will be passed on to taxpayers. Cutting community health centers that give affordable primary and preventive health care in the middle of a recession will not solve our problems—in fact, it creates an even bigger crisis that the nation cannot afford.
* The devastating $1.3 billion cut in H.R. 1 will mean that overall health centers will lose the capacity to serve 11 million patients in FY2011 alone.
o Within months, 127 new health centers that have opened in the last year and a half thanks to Recovery Act or stimulus funds will have to CLOSE THEIR DOORS.
o Well over 3.7 million patients who have received access to care in the last year and a half under the Recovery Act or stimulus New Access Point and Increased Demand for Services funding will LOSE ACCESS to care within months as a result of this cut.
o This cut will not only halt the expansion of the cost-effective, high-quality and patient-directed health center model of care, it will have real, devastating and virtually immediate impacts on existing health centers and the communities and patients they serve – pregnant women, children, those without health insurance due to the recession and recent unemployment and people with HIV/AIDS to name a few – will literally be left with nowhere to turn.
o Health centers will also be forced to lay off over 10,000 employees in the rural and urban under served communities where they are located.

I would ask President Obama how he can advocate for improving education while states are creating budget cuts that will decimate schools. As districts cut programs and teachers children in "high needs" areas will NOT continue to receive the EQUAL education guaranteed them. Instead they are facing cuts to funding that will leave them behind their peers in more affluent areas. The inequity in what is happening to children, while millionaires receive tax breaks, is horrific.
I would ask the President why food and gas prices are not included in the Consumer Price Index. The cost of living continues to rise while my monthly Civil Service Retirement pension (for 35 years of service to this country) has been reduced. Meanwhile, the rich continue to get tax breaks.
Why does Government seem to be doing everything in its power to prevent parents from choosing what school to send their children to?
I would ask, why would you promise to take all of our soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan and give a date. When everyone should know that we will always have some Military there. Just remember Japan, Germany and Korea we are still and always be tied to those countries. Probably another question I would ask is why our Military is rotated in Iraq and Afghanistan more than five tours. One answer is because the recruiting is not meeting the numbers to keep that from happening. But why would young man and women want to join, to end up like our young men and women serving now. Do you know how traumatized they come back home after each deployment? Our Military, is having a hard time coping with life after combat, and the means to help is not there for them and their Families.

Why the government gives states millions of dollars each year in exchange for child support collections. Most people don't know that state child support agencies collect money from non-custodial parents to pay support, then show the amount to the government in order to get federal funding. The states use this funding to keep their agencies operating, but are allowed to use millions of excess funding on anything they want; like schools, prisions, roads,and even pay raises for employees. Not surprising is that attorneys and judges assigned to title IV agencies get paid very well through this funding. Politicians won't touch the issue because it would reduce the amount of money coming into the state. In reality, people obligated to pay support should do so through the court just like they do when paying traffic tickets. Imagine all the federal tax dollars that could really be saved. Of course, the supporters of these collection agencies will claim the children will suffer if they don't exist. But, they won't admit to how much money they receive for their services. It's a corrupt practice that was sponsered by the legal profession as a means to increase their own wealth. Question: Should the taxpayers be responsible for funding agencies to ensure people pay child support? Hell no!

Why aren't we tapping into our oil reserves here in the US? The gas prices are terrible. Can't something be done? Maybe if we stopped paying the high price of imported oil, by using US oil, they would stop gouging us on the price per barrell. This is rediculous.

I'd ask him how he is doing? I think only a couple of presidents in history have been through the magnitude of issues he has. Maybe not the individual severity but certainly he's made up in volume. He's been trying to correct our problems ,and they are our problems, with no matter what action he tries some group is yelling and telling him he's wrong. I feel badly for him because I believe in what he has been trying to do and the public has let him down. So I would ask him how he is doing I think we have an empathetic president and we are an overwhelming bunch.
My questions concerns the job loses here in America. I am a government employee and from what I here the government is going to close down next Friday, if a budget is not accepted. There are certain departments of the government that will remain open (makes since), however there are many that are not. The reason for the shut down is to "save money." My question is why is congress not shutting down? Congress doesen't do anything for the people but cause problems. You have been trying to get a budget for 8 months now, what is going on? Would shuttig down Congress not save millions of dollars? Congress makes a lot more money (for doing nothing) than the rest of the nation that is actually earning there money (for the most part)?

I would say a big Thank You to our President and First Lady Michelle for bringing attention to bulling affecting our youth. We had the experience right here in our small community that drove a beautiful girl named Britt to take her life..feeling like she had nowhere else to go. At her candle lit vigil...a baseball field where she loved to play softball..candles..pictures of her throughout her short life...tears and memories filled the dark on that very still night. Selling teeshirts with her picture and a message about bulling was being used to pay for her funeral expenses. As a mom myself I was so broken by this story...my 13 year old daughter is now so aware of something she never thought would affect her...and so like all children bind togther to help try to stop this cruel act on each other. I keep you in my prayers Mr. President you have the toughest job of all and have to deal with so much in our world today. Thank you for brining attention to a problem that is long over due. I would ask why he does not point out that mandatory insurance is in place for things other than Health... and it is not considered Unconstitutional. There are even severe penalties for not carrying something like auto insurance & motorcycle insurance in many states even when the vehicle is fully owned. If one is unconstitutional isn't the other? If the economy is supposedly improving, but is it that the States seem to be imploding and local crisis by state and county increasing. States are almost bankrupt and have started cutting jobs and targeting education and other supposed National priorities.
The fact of the matter is that if the economy is improving, it is only improving for the top 10% of the country. The other 90% of us see no hope and things only getting worse. The price of gas alone throws 65% of the population into their own fiscal crisis. I make good money and still struggle to support my family. It is a daily struggle.

Governor Mitch Daniels and his friends in the legislature spent the last two elections talking about the need to create jobs here in Indiana. But instead of getting to work helping the middle class, they've begun attacking working families.
They've taken thousands of dollars in contributions from CEOs, big business, and out-of-state corporate interests and now they're doing their bidding. Already, Gov. Daniels has said he supports an effort to silence police, fire fighters, nurses, teachers, and other working Hoosiers. His friends in the legislature voted to lower the minimum wage, denied benefits to unemployed, and leased the rights to the Indiana Toll Road to foreign investors. All while supporting tax breaks to the CEOs and corporate interests that got them elected.

My concern is with the erosion of worker rights in Wisconsin. This chain of events will affect every other state and we need to protect our civil liberties and the american dream at all costs.
Why would you even think about cutting Community based programs such as Workforce Investment when our recovery is so tentative and fragile? I am employed now after having been laid off for over two years, and I know I would not have the job I have now without the help of the Workforce investment Act and Community Action.
I would like to know why is this country cutting Education short on funding. Every republican and democrate say that education is important to them but all I see is cuts for education through out this country from the federal level down to the state level. Our children are our tomorrow.

What happened to the law, rule of law and Equal Protection Clause. Palmore v. Sidoti and Brown v. Board of Ed specifically prohibit the use of race in child custody determinations and education respectively. Title IV and VI also prohibit discrimination in education and federally funded programs.

These people fled a country where the rule of illegal drugs is the law, in hopes of having a better life. We didn't enforce our laws from the onset therefore the gates were open in the minds of many immigrants. So the question should be asked and answered, "why didn't we address the problem in the beginning, before the flood gates opened?". We couldn't afford to hire government workers to process applications in under 5 years(or whatever the turnaround time is), because the funds weren't there. A mantra we hear a lot these days... the funds aren't there. So, if the funds weren't there to process applications quickly, what makes you think the funds are there now to kick millions of people out of the country, or even process their papers now. All that said, this doesn't even touch on the real reason nothing was done... politics. Power hungry, career politicians are to blame... on both sides of the isle.

This is one big non sequitur, Liz. The North was the side full of hate and bigotry. They hated the black and the Southerner about equally. Mr. President will you embrace the "Gang Of Six" Senators (a bipartisan group) who are working w/ Simpson & Bowles on a strategy to fight our deficit? While at the same time fighting the drakonian spending cuts to short term spending that could slow down the recovery?
The president, firt of all is not king or a dictator. He's the president! Congress and the senate have to agree to pass something in order for anything to pass. Why doesn't anyone blame congress and senate for anything. Since the beginning of Obama's precidency the consensus has been to disagree with Obama In both senate and congress. I don't understand how no one ever blames the houses. It's ignorant and foolish to assume that Obama has complete control. We are a democracy. Yes, the president should put his foot down and tell the houses to quit fighting among themselves, grow up, and make a decision on a budget. Instead all they are doing is arguing and pointing fingers. All parties are held responsible, all parties.
Why is the EPA and federal government stopping the coal to gas plants which currently make LPG from producing $55 per barrel gasoline and diesel when the Air Force is currently building the same plant in Oklahoma to do the same thing.

Fact: President Obama is the boss of a civil work force that numbers up to two million (excluding postal workers and uniformed military). Fact: Those federal workers cannot bargain for wages or benefits. Fact: Washington, D.C. is, in the purest sense, a "right to work zone." Federal employees are not compelled to join a union, nor to pay union dues. Fact: Neither Mr. Obama, nor the prior Democratic majority, ever acted to give their union chums a better federal deal.

Washington had already established its General Schedule (GS) classification and pay system for workers. The 1978 bill went further, focused as it was on worker accountability and performance. It severely proscribed the issues over which employees could bargain, as well as prohibited compulsory union support.
Democrats weren't then (and aren't now) about to let their federal employees dictate pay. The GS system, as well as the president and Congress, sees to that. Nor were they about to let workers touch health-care or retirement plans. Unions are instead limited to bargaining over personnel employment practices such as whether employees are allowed to wear beards, or whether the government must pay to clean uniforms. These demands matter, though they are hardly the sort to break the federal bank.

In her first appearance before the House Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee since the health-care law passed, Kathleen Sebelius responded to a line of questioning by Republican Rep. John Shimkus of Illinois about whether $500 billion in Medicare cuts were used to sustain the program or pay for the law.
“There is an issue here on the budget because your own actuary has said you can’t double-count,” said Shimkus. “You can’t count — they’re attacking Medicare on the CR when their bill, your law, cut $500 billion from Medicare.”
He continued: “Then you’re also using the same $500 billion to what? Say your funding health care. Your own actuary says you can’t do both. […] What’s the $500 billion in cuts for? Preserving Medicare or funding the health-care law?
Sebelius’ reply? “Both.”

The decisions made by our government can't acurately be disected by citizens because we the people do not have all the information. The variables in any problem must be given weight and then prioritized before an intelligent conclusion can be formed.
I have felt for a long time that business and government have prioritized these variables incorrectly leading to habitually poor decisions.
Just look at the current state of affairs in this country. No matter who is in charge, we continue down the same path... the path of sustainable greed.
Thus, my question for the president would be the following:
"Mr. President, how do we free ourselves from corruption, which is linked to greed, if we do not reign in those responsible for the financial crisis while also taking steps to loosen the power hold these mega financial institutions, along with the Fed, have on this country and the world. Can this world make progress by continuously looking forward without fixing the past, or are we doomed to repeat history because we turned the other cheek and took the moral high road."
Jay, I'm not being racist at all by indentifying or voicing my opinion of what I believe to be the origin of its' inception, as well as its' ongoing perpetuation! Just because one describes or speaks loudly about the spurning and detrimental acts of racism and its' results, does not make that person a racist! RACISM has to be taught, molded, groomed, and bread into the characteral psyche of ones' raising, to feel the necessity; the right to promote ones' race over ALL others! Babies are not born racists!
