Obamas will attend space shuttle launch WASHINGTON (CNN) - The Obama family plans to attend the launch of the space shuttle Endeavour later this month. According to a senior administration official, President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama and their daughters Malia and Sasha will watch the launch in person on Friday, April 29th at Cape Canaveral, Florida. Endeavour, NASA's next-to-last shuttle launch, will be commanded by Mark Kelly, the husband of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords who is recovering from a gunshot wound to the head from the Jan. 8th shootings in Tucson, Arizona. Doctors expect Giffords to make the trip from her Houston hospital room to see her husband's launch. Kelly will lead a crew of six to deliver physics instruments to the International Space Station. He resumed training with the team in February after being by his wife's side at an Arizona hospital. The crew will arrive in Florida next Tuesday to begin final preparations for the mission. After the shuttle launch, President Obama will give a commencement speech at Miami Dade College. |

When I glanced at this story I wondered if anybody was hateful enough to find something bad to say. A couple of folks believe the President "killed off the space program"? Do you even know where the federal budget comes from? Do you know how former President Bush treated the science and technology investment in America? Isn't Florida one of the "Red States" where everybody wants a smaller federal government? Here's a news flash – small governments don't have space programs! Beyond that point – the shuttles were over 30 years old! It's time to move to the next level. Folks in Florida need to stick to Quran-burning and leave intellectual matters to the folks who know the Earth isn't flat.

Now there is some real irony!!! The President that ended U.S. manned exploration of space, and who voluntarily is giving up the U.S. lead in space exploration and technology to the Chinese, Russians, Indians, and Brazilians, want to go watch the last shuttle launch? Obama who touts investment has killed the nations space program in favor of passing out a record number of food stamps. After this launch if the U.S. wants to send someone into space we'll have to pay to hitch a ride with someone else like the Russians! Obama is ending U.S. leadership in space that our nation has enjoyed since President Kennedy! Unbelievable!!!!

The space program is a facinating adventure,which has gone on for a number of years and at a very heavy cost. I would think you adventurous people would also find keeping a roof over your families and food on the table and creating jobs to be also facinating .At.this time ,I think there are more important things for our country's money to support. Does this guy ever squeeze any work in between vacations, golf outings, basketball games, jazz fests, NCAA picks, meeting with celebrities, and watching the space shuttle? Did anyone tell this guy that the presidency is a real job, not a reality TV show?
Obama killed the space program, because the shuttle fleet is being retired? Let's see, that's been in the works for a LONG time. On top of that, it's unbelievably expensive (approx. $450 million per) to launch the shuttle. The shuttle fleet is 30 years old... to put that in to prospective for you, the shuttle computer system still runs on it's original ONE MEGABYTE of memory. While I'm sad to see the awesomeness that is the space shuttle go, it's time for those vehicles to be retired. The next big thing, set up by Bush, was to get us back to the moon. Given the financial climate of the country, I'm not so upset about that. Been there, done that, as it were. In the meantime, we have a lot of cool equipment in space right now that's going to give us a lot of data over the next decade. We don't need to keep circling the planet for that. When finances are back in order, forget the moon, let's shoot for mars!
