Latest on Osama bin Laden photo From CNN’s Chief National Correspondent John King A senior government official involved in the discussions about releasing the photo tells CNN that a photo release "could" come today via the CIA. A government official familiar with intelligence matters says deliberations are leaning toward release. Says there is "growing consensus" to release the photo but emphasizes "it isn't unanimous and everyone has understandable hesitation" The senior government official says there are "a lot to choose from .... Most of them very graphic" Both say the CIA has been tasked with coming up with best possibilities and then the White House will make the call. |

No matter if it does happen, there are going to be people in the U.S. that will cry that the photos are doctored/fake. I personally do NOT want to see the photos. I'll take Al Jazeera's word that bin Laden is dead. If he wasn't, a tape of the very alive OBL would have surfaced by now. At least that's MY opinion.

Obama probably did not release photos and video at this time, so when he releases them later, so he can string out this story, continue getting more credit, and milk it for every last drop of media coverage he can.

My thoughts are that you release gruesome photos opt for display on the internet only, but make it your business to display clean photos to the general public in an easy-access manner.
To prevent the photos from being a radical tool for retaliation, why not let those who want to view them, for whatever reason, do so at a secured location. They could be viewed through a binocular so no photo copies can be made.

Here's my problem with the governments place in releasing this photo. Take a look into history at every murder photo or death photo call it what you want you can get on the net and look up any outlaw from back in the day and see the holes in there chest from being over killed but as americans WE WANT and NEED to see the proof that this monster is dead but that wont happen because i don't think he is dead,. I have a long distant relative that is one of those photos online, part of the Doolin/Dalton gang. I have no problem with people viewing it. As worthless as he was, however, he didn't murder over 3k innocent people, Americans, Afghanis, Pakistanis, etc. I think in the interest of Americans' safety, here and abroad, the photos shouldn't be released. Personally, I don't need to see graphic photographs of bi Laden's head, post-shooting. I've seen the Zapruder movie of JFK's assassination enough that I will never watch it again. It changed me a bit, and not for the better.
I tried to watch the decapitation videos of Americans such as Daniel Pearl held by terrorists but could never bring myself to watch such heinous acts.
I worry that releasing the photos will spur Osama's supporters to rally even more than they might now.
I trust our President to weigh the pros and cons and to make a decision on whether or not to release the photos.
But I will not be looking at the images if they are released.

The most heinous thing any among us have seen was the sight of two landmarks falling to the ground with thousands of husbands, wives, mothers, fathers, sons and daughters inside. If the Zapruder film messed with your head be glad you chose not to watch those beheadings. A couple of my buddies tricked me into watching one of those once, I still have nightmares from it. Bin Laden had 3 potential lethal wounds. 1 wss a gun shot to his chest and 2 were wounds above his left eye. Since standard procedure for the SEAL team is a finishing double tap (two rapid shots in succession) I have the feeling that the woman (bin Laden's wife) stepped in front of bin Laden to protect him. She was shot and dthe bullet passed through her and hit bin Lden in the chest killing him. A SEAL then stepped up and did the double tap into osama's head. End of story.

It's hard to explain, but I have a terrible time seeing (and usually don't look at) pictures and videos of animal abuse that make the news from time to time. I can't imagine having a difficult time seeing any post-mortem pictures of this guy.

The American people deserve to have proof that this man is no longer amoungst the living so that we can again sleep in peace knowing that our government is doing everything it can to protect us from monsters such as this. I think the pictures should be realeased! Nothing could be more graphic than us watching the twin towers burn, people jumping out of windows, people in the streets running for their lives, some bloody, some being carried by others, and so on. We have graphic movies being played in theater's, and we can turn on our televisions every day and night and see graphic photos. So whats the big deal of seeing one more dead body! Confirm everyones doubt and get on with it. Also STOP sending money to them! WE OWE THEM NOTHING. Keep our money in our country and start putting our country back to gether as one NATION UNDER GOD! My morbid curiosity wants to see the photos and if they're released I'll certainly look at them, but my common sense says that we should probably take the high road and not rub salt in the wounds of radicals. It's satisfaction enough that we took out bin Laden and that should suffice. However, the photos exist and there's no way that they'll stay under wraps for long. If it were left up to me I'd say they should be "leaked" to the public many months from now, after the fervor has died.

If the government is supposedly sophisticated enough to fabricate this story, wouldn't they also have the ability to doctor the photos? My personal opinion, I hope they release the photo.
On 9/11, I was only a couple of blocks away from the trade center when the second plane flew right over me into tower two. The sound of the explosion was deafening and I ran. I personally knew several people who were killed that day. For the next few days, I saw on every news outlet, images of people dead or jumping to their deaths to escape the inferno inside those buildings. For the weeks after, walking in the city all you could smell was this putrid, burning metal/plastic odor that just lingered for what seemed like forever. For three years, I had mild panic attacks everytime I heard a plane fly overhead. For the next decade, we've been showed the faces of our lost service men and women, images and video of those whose dead charred bodies were strung up and dragged around Iraq like trophies, images of people killed in subway attacks in Italy and the UK, countless terrorist attacks worldwide, ....and the image of this monster bin Laden.
For all of this, while the photos are said to be gruesome, I think Al-Queda has done a fine job of prepping us with gruesome images. Except this time, it won't be the images of the innocents we lost. It will be the image of the devil getting his due. And after everything this monster and his sick followers have put the world through, I think I can handle seeing a picture of him dead.
I sympathize with those who say the image will only fan the flames and endanger our military service members. But regardless of the picture being released, we will ALWAYS be in danger as long as people with his ideology exist.

While I think the world needs proof, this is a rough decision. It's a damned if you do or dont scenario, either way. Just like some assorted nuts still believe the President is a "Kenyan socialist," some similar nuts will not believe binLaden is truly dead. I also feel like our goverment needs to be extra vigilant now. Just like in an abusive relationship, things are most dangerous when the woman leaves, when revenge is imminent! I agree with many of you here who have stated that the pictures need to be posted online for those of us who have the 'stomach' to see them, and choose to view them. But one thought came to my mind when some people agreed with those in the intelligence community about the pictures being too graphic; near the end of World War 2 when the Death Camps of Nazi Germany were discovered and those pictures were publicized, did anyone cry "Too graphic?" ...and those pictures were publicized without the internet.

I realize that some (most) people feel a need to see this gruesome photo for closure I guess. Some ppl won't believe he is dead until they see this. When many people have seen loved ones in the morgue so that they have closure. Keep in mind that while their loved ones are in the morgue have been cleaned up as much as possible. These photos show OBL as is after being shot in the head between the eyes. He wasn't cleaned up. I think it's people's sick need to see blood and gore. Yet, a large number of voters for various reasons are demanding their release.
Why not create an inclusive, privileged, and private display opportunity for those closest (either physical proximity or by deceased relationship) to initially view the photos if they so desire.
Afterwards, and when the anti-American hostilities have simmered down, those photos could be released or "leaked" to the general public.

Showing the pics of OBL will help many folks get some closure. Yes, it is morbid, no denying that. And some people find going to a viewing of the corpse at a wake, even a loved one, to be a bit morbid too. But as humans, we often need that visual confirmation to start the healing process, and seeing OBL's corpse might just give many folks a chance to recover the peace-of-mind they lost when they watched the towers fall on 9/11.
