Air Force One's forecast: missed approach

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Even the commander-in-chief takes a back seat to bad weather.  Wednesday, just as Air Force One was approaching Hartford’s Bradley International Airport to land, the pilot executed a missed approach and circled around.

Federal Aviation Authority spokeswoman Laura Brown tells CNN, "The plane had not yet reached the runway and the weather was 'bad' so the pilot circled around and lined up for another landing."

President Obama is scheduled to speak this morning at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy's graduation ceremony in New London.  It was cloudy and rainy in Hartford this morning and the president's speech at the Coast Guard Academy which was originally planned outside was moved to an indoor location.

Air Force One circled around the airport, located in Windsor Locks, Connecticut, at approximately 9:50 a.m. At the time, the weather there was 55 degrees, extremely overcast and northwest winds at 11mph.

White House spokesperson Nick Shapiro confirmed the incident and said that due to the weather the pilot decided to circle around before landing the plane but added, “[T]his is a standard and safe procedure.”

The president's plane did eventually land at the airport just a few minutes later, at 10:05 a.m., without incident.  It's not known if Obama knew about the missed landing.  Reporters traveling on Air Force One were unaware of the first attempted landing.

With the exception of getting Osama I would say missed approach sums the Obama presidency.

Another Liberal Democrat. Using my lunch break to tell you what a narrow minded moron you must be. I'm well into my sixties. I served in combat in Vietnam. How about you. Have you ever serves in the military? I've worked since I was fourteen. I pay my bills and my taxes. I've never been on on any type of public assistance. I work in health care so I take care of the people the right wing wants to ignore. All of my liberal friends live the same kind of lifestyle I do. I just want to know, where did you and your clearly uninformed bigots get the idea that Democrats/ Liberals don't work and con tribute to this country. I'll be waiting for an answer. And just what policies might those be? These perhaps?

"I don't know where bin Laden is. I have no idea and really don't care. It's not that important. It's not our priority."
        – G.W. Bush, 3/13/02

"I am truly not that concerned about him."
        – G.W. Bush, repsonding to a question about bin Laden's whereabouts,

Sorry to contradict your right-wing talking points, old sport, but Khalid Sheik Mohammed only gave up bin Laden's courier's name AFTER the Bush administration had stopped torturing him. They'd also dismantled the task force charged with finding and assassinating/arresting him. But why let facts get in the way of your hatred of the man who did in two years what Bush couldn't or wouldn't do in seven?

Was that the Bush policy of starting a war with a nation that was not involved in 911 or AQ (that would be Iraq) so that we could lure AQ into a sense of false security for 7 years long years only to then have an op to take out UBL

        That Bush policy?

        May 19, 2011 at 8:42 am |
      • XWngLady

@Mgc6288: Nice Try, but this thread is talking specifically about catching Osama Bin Laden, not about continuing the general war on terror or al Qaeda. It was President Obama who directed the DOD, CIA, etc. to make capturing or killing Osama Bin Laden himself, a priority, something which Pres. Bush by his own admission in your lovely video has admitted not being concerned with.

And then you clicked on it when the title clearly stated what the article was about. It's quite unusual for Air Force One to have to execute a missed approach, and since there's always some conspiracy idiot always ready to sell a story, they had to report why the big airplane with the best of the best pilot in command put wheels back in the well and began to climb.

Since we really don't know what Obama's beliefs are, he can't blame it on OUR God. George Bush was the air traffic controller, it's all his fault. Poor George he gets blamed for all Obama's screw up, and there are plenty. Enough to make him a one termer.

This is nothing big...it happens all the time. Now that ATC is under the radar (no pun intended) everyone is being critical of the aviation community.

On another note, how convenient to attribute criticism of our president to "racism." Nowhere in recent published articles in reference to the overwhelming numbers of voters of all ethnicities who elected President NObama to office is there a single mention. Are we supposed to believe that the voters who have become disenchanted with NObama's policies are now racists? Whether NObama's supporters accept it or not; his fall in popularity is because the "change" he promised is NOT the change America expected or wanted.

I am a latino and life-long Democrat, and I don't support President NObama. I also don't like his beliefs on redistribution of wealth or his beliefs on stimulating America's economy out of a recession with borrowed billions of dollars. Nor do I believe in higher taxes for the "rich" when almost half of the country does not pay any federal taxes at all.

I certainly don't share NObama's belief about labor unions or his government takeover of private businesses. I most certainly don't believe in inviting so called "rappers" to the White House who stupidly and openly advocate shooting police officers.

And of course, I don't believe the federal government has the authority to make me buy heath insurance or any other products, for that matter. I don't believe the federal government is answer to everything, but rather, part of the problem.

What does racism have to do with tis beliefs? REALLY!

A better question is why people blame gender bias as the reason people call Palin an idiot. It's the same thing, but somehow OK if repubs do it.

    • Nick

"And of course, I don't believe the federal government has the authority to make me buy heath insurance"

The problem is the millions who elect not to buy health insurance drive cost to everyone else that has it because when they break a leg where do they go, and who pays for it? Exactly...so I am all for you NOT having health insurace IF your not allowed to have any medical procedures before YOU PAY UP FRONT

I love how you can list off things you don't like yet don't offer any solutions. The fact you call him "nobama" tells me that you have already made up your mind and have decided that no matter what this guy does it will not be good enough for you.
"Inflexible people like you make American voters sick" ... really? did you ask them all yourself? Do you have a crystal ball? It is your inflexibility that makes ME sick.
I do not agree with everything Obama has done, nor do I think he is the answer to America's problems, but you are showing a blatant disrespect to our political system and our country.
I will agree with you on one thing, not all people disagree with Obama on everything because of racism..... stupidity and the inability to look at policies and decide what is good and bad.
To you everything "Nobama" does will be bad, so like I said, you have already decided, no matter what the guy does he will always be "nobama" to you, so in my opinion you have no right to speak on behalf of the "American Voters".

Caludia in Houston, your response to Jerry in Florida is so right. Jerry in Florida, just say you hate the president because the very fact you fail to mention the Republicans and how they have also messed with your quality of life, especially the Latino population is like biting the hand that feeds the mouth. Don't you know it? Republicans hate immigrants (illegal or not) and Latinos, especially! They're opposed to mostly any type of immigration and don't want a path to legalization for illegal Latinos. Go ahead Jerry, hate Obama, the Democrats. The Republicans have done everything good, in your mind it seems.

      May 18, 2011 at 1:57 pm |

Claudia in Houston: Why does one (Jerry) have to mention Republicans? Are you implying that if one is a Repub (or anything other than a Dem for that matter), then you are a racist? I think you are drinking way too much PC Kool Aid.

littletingod: You have been sipping the Kool Aid too I see. Blaming the recession specifically on GWB policies and wars just shows your narrow minded view which is not supported by the data. Whats funny to me is how can one person can only incourage policy then sign them into law is to blame for all the bs in Washington. First the rebublicans block and filibuster every possible bill by democrats refuse to work with them then blame the democrats that nothing is getting done. and the instant they get a majority they continue to try make the poor and middle class suffer. Since 1970 the average wage has continued to drop and that is with a minimum of about 8 dollars while it was probably 2 back then. While the ammount of excutives pay has more than tripled in the same time. You cant get a conscensus if only one side is trying and the is saying I have a better way but doesnt have solutions or a plan. and is unwilling to work with the other because it will make them look weak to their party(republicans/tea party)....

    May 18, 2011 at 2:13 pm |
  25. Sebastian, Carlsbad, California

    Jerry in Florida:

First of all, being a minority [ latino or black] does not insulate a person from being able to be racist.

I would agree that the word "racism" may get overused. Fewer people are the "cross-burning", "white-sheet-wearing" variety of racists. However what the Presidency of Barack Obama has revealed is how race-specific opposition to the President is clear.

You mentioned the President adding to the national debt to get us out of the recession and you seem to buy the implied GOP line that this is indicative of his financial irresponsibility. You CONVENIENTLY forget that Obama didn't run up the $12 Trillion of debt we have: Nixon, Carter, Reagan, Reagan, Bush (Daddy), Clinton [who actually ran some surpluses], Bush (Sonny), Bush (Sonny) did.

What I (and other independet voters) observe is that it wasn't until the President was Black, was such a concerted effort to malign the chief executive made on this topic. Furthermore, if anyone deserves a break for adding to the deficit, it would be a President taking action to stave off a 2nd Great Depression with a $787B Stimulus Bill (not $1T like the GOP claims it was; a action plan that was 1/3 Tax Cuts and 2/3rds focused spending).

When thinking people look at the opposition that has been manufactured against Obama, we don't see principles, we see EMOTION. We see race-based bias.

When thinking people see that President Number 44 is the only one for who some segment of the population rabiddly asks for a birth certificate – going so far as to have state legislations try to pass laws to require he show it - we see race-based bias.

I could go on and delineate 10 to 20 more examples of how this President, despite the merits of what he has done has been attacked while other, white Presidents or white politicians doing the same thing were PRAISED Healthcare reform when Romney did it was praised by the GOP but under Obama it is suddenly socialism. Hopefully, by now, you get the point.

Maybe you have to be a black achiever in this country to see the disparate treatment. Maybe not.

As an Air Force Reserve pilot, I am a little confused by what an extreme overcast is. Is it REALLY overcast as opposed to just a little overcast? And that someone sitting on a jet would not know about a missed approach is ludicrous, first hint in really loud noise of engines taking jet back in the extreme overcast. What to go, CNN, another non story.

Why does this even make the news? This is such a routine action that it shouldn't even raise anyone's eyebrow, yet alone take up space in the news. Go-arounds, rejected landings, missed approaches... Who cares!!!! They are normal!!! They happen all the time!!!!! We are trained to do them versus putting the people and aircraft into harms way. If we don't like the way the landing looks, we're going to go around and set up for another approach. Does the US media really have nothing else to report?!

When obama took office the country was a big mess because of bush!!! He tries and republicans always block him....I think taxin the rich is the right thing to do because the poor can't afford to survive and the rich get much BIGGER tax breaks than the poor... How is that fair? Btw how is it that an article about a missed landing turns into an obama bashing?!

Hey Claudia, there you go again. If anyone disagrees with NObama or his policies, you are a "hater/racist." I guess you miss the fact that the present administration is Democrat, not Republican. Oh well... Inflexible people like you make American voters sick.

Has anyone noticed that when a black person is being criticized by another race, the one criticizing is a racist, while, he the situation is reversed, no such thing happens? Racism will never end so long as the ones screaming it are racists themselves, perpetuating the problem. I do not tolerate anyone of any minority crying about how bad their ancestors were treated by the whites. I am native american. so believe of when i tell you we got and still get the worst of it. the man in the oval office is not good at his job, just like a lot before him of both parties. shut it already.

I am Native American as well, though I disagree that Obama is not good at his job, I very much agree that he is the same as we seem to always get, just with different objectives.
I laugh when people talk about how bad a race had it..... in this day and age we are all in this together, the sooner we all get that, the better for mankind. oooops there I go dreaming again =)

That I can't stand and there is nothing to disagree on. You are spreading mis information to make yourself feel better. Wee you will never feel better as long as "Nobama" in in power..... Jerry, freedom is not free. It is paid for every day by taxpayers and those who serve in the military protecting it. I served 27 yrs and often had to bite my tongue when blowholes opened their mouths, often embarassing not only themselves but our nation. But I stood by the constitution I defended, giving everyone equal right to speak freely. I hope you see the difference. Not only is there freedom of speech, but of opinion, and of the right to disagree.
      Lighten up man.

I live in the Hartford area. The weather today was exactly as forecast: cloudy, showery, overcast. All sort of on and off. Although I was surprised the "weather" led to a go-round, especially since Hartford has both radar and ALS, I suppose that the pilot wanted a clear visual approach and "knew" that he was likely to get one if he delayed briefly. I don't see a failure on the part of the forecasters, airport, pilot, or Administration! I do agree that it seems odd that it deserved a "news story". Must have been a slow day!

One more thing @Jerry, Florida, you complain about the lyrics referencing police by 'Common'? A simple article about an every day thing. Of course it has to be used for people to slam each other's political party or president. Heaven forbid there should ever be an intelligent conversation on here. I think the party system should be abolished. Maybe then people would vote for the PERSON not the PARTY.

You can take away the D or R, the ass or the elephant, but you cannot change the man.
It will make no difference whatsoever if you abolish the party system. The President, whomever he or she is, will stock their staff with like (aka "simple") minded people anyway. Why bother?

That's why they need to stop enabling comments on everything. Air Force One had a slightly trickier than usual landing. What is there to discuss? People will just flood the comments with nonconstructive political messages that have absolutely nothing to do with the story.

Why is it that anytime someone disagrees with the great one that he is labled a racisct?? I am so sick of hearing that word and those of you who who are not intelligent enough to disagree have to show how intelligent you are by using the word racsict and that seals the answer to the disagreement. I have never in my life heard that word used so much as when the annointed one took office. He is the one that has created a lot of racisim and divisiveness in this country. And if any of you think that I am racist--well, it is your opinion. God forbid that we dare disagree with "he who walks on water"!

Great point! BTW, it is my understanding that the commander of Air Force One is not bound FAA minimums and instead uses whatever they deem appropriate. Considering they are flying the President the commander may well choose to be more conservative, but he also has the option of going below "minimums" if the need exists.

      May 19, 2011 at 7:22 am |

This is what happens when you enable comments on every story. This information is *slightly* interesting at best, but there's really not much to discuss about it. Hence, everyone comes on here to spout off their political opinions – "I hate the president", "I love the president" – because somehow it's important to tell that sort of thing to strangers on the Internet.

If the media knew anything about aviation, they would realize this isn't news. Flying a missed-approach or executing a go-around during a landing are both non-events. Leave it to the media however to make it seem like a big deal. The problem is much of the general public lack a deep knowledge of flying to realize this is purely sensational journalism at its finest (sadest?).

Instead of taking the VC-25 (747-200) into Bradley and then driving 1-1/4 hours each way to and from the Coast Guard Academy, why didn't he just take a smaller plane into Groton/New London Airport (5000' runway) or and then only drive the 12 minutes to the Academy. That way it would be more "Green", and Connecticut wouldn't have to put up with the hassle of so many closed roads, especially around rush hour.
As I was typing this, I just thought of the reason. He needed the big, impressive plane when he went to Boston later yesterday for his fund raising event. People aren't going to pony up the $2 million he raised yesterday for someone in a Guflstream. It's all about the impression. I don't want to hear one damn thing about my "carbon footprint."

My grandfather and father were hardworkng Democrats; even during the depression of 1929 my grandfather didn't accept government aid, according to my father, who also lived right through it, completing HS in 1932. My father worked until he was called into WW2 in 1941-1946 in the Pacific; didn't even have the right to vote. He was an honorable, quiet man who came home to the 'war' he'd left, by GOD'S will was able to find a job to raise a family of 4 children and his wife. My father died at age 91 in 2005.

All just to try to hurt me or undermine a point I'm making. This is not the first time he has tried to dishonor my father's military service as he called me a liar. Jay you are a sad case!

Jay, I've often said that just because a law is put on the books doesn't mean or insure a change of bigot minsets; especially down south. You ought to be honest because NC is down south too. I was speaking of the fact that he couldn't 'really' vote until after the VOTING RIGHTS ACT OF 1965. The Constitution may have been ratified with the 15th Amendment in 1870, but many black men still were disenfranchised due to many reasons; proofs of citizenship, too high poll taxes, making access to polls inconvenient!

Contd: They may have known who they wanted to vote for but the black man had to prove he could read. How many do you think could read just recently being freed from slavery? He had to actually be employed at certain type jobs, under certain whites so that he could be vouched for and actually given permission. More often their jobs were threatened if they were found to have voted; many times they were beaten and there lives were threatened, so don't try to get cute with me! You know I will go right there!

Contd: NO! My father was not a felon, unless being black was a felony; and you can bet your last dollar and WIN! That is exactly how many black men were treated back then and right now, even today, many black men are skiddish of the voting process, because they say 'I'm not gettin off work'. 'They're going to put who they want in there anyway'! We are breaking that 'glass ceiing' more and more but it does still happen. So you can stop your sarcasm because it ain't working! VOTING RIGHTS ACT of 1965, OK? OK.

Jay, there is one more thing I'd like to add continuing my previous posts to you. I'd really appreciate you leaving your slight remarks against my now deceased father, who also fought for you and this nation so that we could have the freedoms that we enjoy today. Who knows? Had he and others not been a part of that 'GREAT AMERICAN INSTITUTION' called the UNITED STATES MILITARY, you, myself nor anyone else most likely wouldn't have had the privilege of writing on a blog, much less freedom of speech!

I probably shouldn't even dignify your stupid, hideous question with an answer but I will, Jay. 'Was your father a felon or foreigner'? My father was a MAN; an honorable, Godfearing man; he was loyal to his country, his family and his brotherman, he respected authority, he was calm, quiet and accepting, yet filled with wisdom and discernment. He never even got a traffic ticket and he was born in ATLANTA, GEORGIA. So I guess his only 'felony' was, like as with many others, that he was Black in America'!

Slow down Liz, you said "didn't even have the right to vote" Right is the word I picked up on. Given that black men were given the right to vote in 1870. I understand if you had said that he was denied his right to vote, or could not exerciser his given rights, but to flat out say that he did not have the right is just not true.... unless he was a felon or foreigner.

You did exactly what I expected. You went off on a rant about how honorable he was, how he was loyal to his country etc. etc. etc. That is not the point. Many white people were also those things and yet they were denied their rights as well. I was looking for what made his situation different from all others. I only asked the question?

I know that the Democrats kept people from voting by poll tax, reading test, and other strange requirements. If not for the Republicans the voting acts of 1870 and the 1960's would have never been passed. Funny how blacks are so loyal to the Democrat party that denied them their fundamental rights. Republicans have always been there, guaranteeing individual rights over government imposed process like voter requirements.

Sorry to step on your toes. I will accept your jabs at me and take it all as just a misunderstanding.

Thank you; and I will accept your post as an apology because since you only picked up on the phrase 'didn't even have the right to vote', I guess I should've been more specific and clear. However, most knowledgeable, laymen blacks and whites in AMERICA only relate to the Voting Rights Act of 1965 as THE 'landmark' in time of our history when African Americans, period, were afforded the 'right' to vote. BTW, once punishment is completed, even 'felons' can be reinstated to vote; foreigners, when naturalized..

Liz, you are right, I was wrong. felons can vote when reinstated. Thanks for pointing that out.

I am thankful to anyone black, white, (and any color) that has served our country. We are blessed that these citizens would give up so much to defend our nation.

Jerry....you are a prime example of Racial Hatred without the White Hoods and White Gowns. You and all people YOUR type attempt to cover up your hatred with statements that insight your hatred but you attempt to make intelligent points but the hatred BLEEDS through in your summations RED LETTERS.

Until our 1st African American POTUS, never has this country ever debated the citizenship, the intelligent, the refusal to agree on ANYTHING he presents to the American people.

No other WHITE POTUS has ever had to face the adversity and continuous Race Based comments and hatred we have seen in the last 2-3 years.

    NEVER!
