WH official: Edits 'still being made' to Afghanistan speech

Washington (CNN) –A senior administration official tells CNN that edits are “still being made” to the speech President Obama will deliver in primetime on troop levels in Afghanistan.

The official said the speech, that will take place in the East Room, is expected to last anywhere from “10 to 15 minutes….less than 15 minutes.”

The president will tell Americans that “he’s making good on a promise” that he made when he rolled out his Afghanistan strategy in December of 2009.

The official said that the president settled on his decision “based on successes we’ve enjoyed in Afghanistan over the last 18 months.”

Part of what he hopes to accomplish in the speech? “Clarifying what our goals are” in Afghanistan,” the official said.

Obama is touting this as a troop withdrawal, but really he is just lowering numbers to pre-surge levels (source: http://bit.ly/jxVfT9). He wins the support of the anti-war folks with the withdrawal aspect and keeps the support of the hawks by not really changing anything, quite a devious political move. Professor Juan Cole gave an interesting analysis of the situation on today's Democracy Now!, check it out: http://www.democracynow.org/2011/6/22/obamas_afghan_war_military_drawdown_to

The speech isn't done? And this is news? Why not write about how Obama has made American more dependent on foreign oil by halting drilling (yet, using tax funds to subsidize drilling for Brazil), how the price of gas has been up to record levels, why the administration is handing out waivers from ObamaCare to his supporter–yet forcing others to participate, how 1/3 of business are planning on dropping health insurance because of ObamaCare.... Where on the 'watchdogs"?

After 2.5 years of Obama policies, I'm ready to get him out.

More edits, that's what we need. Why not simply tell the bold truth, we are absolutley doing no good in Afghansitan although we are led to believe we have halted the Al Q.and Taliban movement in the mountains and caves that are abundant. Thes individuals live like rats or cockroaches. How many homes in the world are free of cockroaches? C'mon, zero. So we are spending lives and hundreds of billions of dollars to make sure these animals don't spread over to the U.S. and enter as illiegals and get Social Security, Medicaide, free schooling, housing and food. Aw, you must be kidding me, Edit what speech? It's all a pack of gibberish anymore and everyone knows it except our so called leaders. All they are interested in is the money in their bank accounts. So lets Cut Social Security Benefits for the seniors that earned it. Hogwash. Keep giving it to the muslims in Afghanistan and the beloved Bin Ladin harboring country, Pakisttan.

the repugs held this country hostage for 6 month in order to make the troop surge and still complained about the president not sending enough soldiers, now they are against the war. every thing the president does these repugs beat him down, even if they are the ones that initiate it. the war is going well now they want to discredit this president, just because every thing they put their hands on turns to crap,

I wonder if he will address how he is in violation of the War Powers Act? I wonder if he will address how unemployment has risen under his watch? I wonder if he will address how much the dollar has been devalued under his watch? I wonder if he will address the travesty that is Obamacare? I wonder if he will address how his NLRB appointees are blocking jobs in SC and holding a large exported hostage? I wonder if he will address how he hosted Wall Street bigwigs at the Whitehouse for a "summitt" that was a cleverly disguised fund raiser?
No, I don't think he will talk about any of those things, and the press won't hold him accountable anyway.

Matt above said that President Obama has halted oil drilling and is making us more dependend on oil from abroad. First Matt, get your facts straight. Domestic oil drilling is up 11% during the Obama administration. And, second, unless there is some change or some legislation to the contrary, oil extracted domestically is NOT sold in the U.S. It goes out for bidding in the international market.

Dear Sickofthisarrogance: I am sick of your stupidity. Yes, he should address the violation of the War Powers Act, but you seem to think he is the first to have done it. The undemployment rate will not get better as long as Republicans stop everything. There was a bipartisan bill that was brought on the Senate floor yesterday and the Republicans tried to attach 60+ amendments... No, they don't want any jobs created... How do you know Obamacare will be a travesty?? Why don't you wait until it has taken effect first. You already have the benefit that you cannot be denied coverage and health insurance costs have gone down. Have you heard of any sharp spikes lately? I haven't. Now, I don't know about his appointees blocking jobs in SC... please enlighten us... And the by the way, you are accusing Obama for pandering to Wall Street bigwigs when they have every Republican in their pockets?? Are you freaking kidding me????
