Working weekend

President Obama said Thursday he will hold a second meeting with congressional leaders Sunday to continue negotiations on a deficit reduction deal.

The first meeting involving Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and eight congressional leaders from both parties lasted 90 minutes Thursday.

Obama added he will conduct Sundays meeting "with the expectation being that at that point the parties will at least know where each other's bottom lines are" and the hard negotiating can begin.

Right – just like they worked through their vacations... Nothing to show for it. Yesterday they were debating if 200 million dollars was enough for military bands – the Repubs wanted more and the Dems said 200 million is a good number. These people are really not getting it. We are cutting aid for infants and we are keeping 200 million for BANDS??? The budget needs a good look – 1 line item at a time – and real cuts need to be made.

I can't believe it for once we agree. The sky will probably fall...do you think?

Of course, I assume this would mean a lot of trumpet players looking for a job. Aid for infants should come first.

n checking that out I do believe the Repubs wanted more like $320 million and Obama stated $200 million was enough for military bands which implies Repugs wanted presumably even less for infants...surprised you pointed out that flaw in their caricature.

Also taxes should be raised before children and elderly are put in the position of being hurt by cuts...and may things like oil and farm subsidies should be done away with. Many deductions should be eliminated.

Do we still need to maintain the number of troops we have in Germany and Japan. Couldn't a larger percentage of these personnel be stationed state-side where their pay would bolster local economies...and there are military bases here that could be closed and outfits consolidated. (See anyone selling that if the base in a representative's district is on the block.) I just watched the whole whine bit when a tank factory could be closed in my state Ohio. The bawl baby of the House was the first to cry. His tears were for us to continue pumping out those tanks, which are no longer needed, regardless of the waste.
