President Obama will leave D.C. today and head to Martha's Vineyard for 10 days of R & R.

But before he departs the administration is wrapping up a few loose ends like announcing  new sanctions against Syria and calling for President Bashar al-Assad to step down from power.    " The future of Syria must be determined by its people, but President Bashar al-Assad is standing in their way," Obama said in a written statement. "We have consistently said that President Assad must lead a democratic transition or get out of the way. He has not led. I did hear, on CNN, one of George Bush's Republican former Federal Reserve employees call Rick Perry an idiot for his "Bernanke treason" remark, so maybe there is something to this.

Obama is proving Lincoln right ... by fooling some of the people ALL of the time. You are just another liberal fool, who even after witnessing 2 1/2 years of the Obama parasites, sucking the life out of our economy and our country, continues to defend and support this lying, manipulative, racist, snake. Obama has ruled this country by pitting one half of America against the other half, and thus maintaining a toxic atmosphere of fear and mistrust. His empty promises are all about getting reelected, while he continues to destroy this great country. It's people like you, blind fanatical Obama loyalists, who are bringing America to its knees. America is MORE important than Obama, and if you want to save this great country of ours, it's time for you Obama suckers to open your eyes, and shift your loyalty from Obama to America !!!

        Howard,
Obama's only misstep so far has been to believe that the GOP would be interested in participating in the improvement of the country, when if fact, they are willing to flush the country down the toilet, if it will somehow impede the president' chances for a second term. Now that his second term is a slam dunk (which happens when you are running without a valid opponent), their only interest is in impeding anything that might make him look good, regardless of the needs of the country. They're all wh*res.

howard, well said. I dont know how you can look at the facts of the issues and not see that Obama is in total left field and his administration is killing htis country. Although I am not a Republican, I think what they did was stand up for this country in not letting the debt ceiling be increased. We need to do what any fiscally responsible citizen of this country would do in hard times – Stop spending and pay off your debt!

Howard tsk tsk tsk...how does life and history so easily pass you by? Do you wake up, and all of a sudden think that the problems we are experiencing today are only as a result of the last 2 and a half years? Don't you realize we've been at war in two (2) countries for more than a decade? Or did you miss that as well?

A little lesson for ya....The problems this country is experiencing today DID NOT happen overnite! And they won't be fixed overnite. Its so frustrating telling people like you there is no magic wand, or fix it dust, its gonna take time.

Now, go lay down and take a nap. Let the smart people fix this as its a little too much for you to understand.

  2. Jerry

I tell you what, until this joker and his absent minded administration are out of office, our family corporation is investing very minimally in equipment, not adding on to our facility and not hiring new employees. That is the same sentiment many of our partners share in our niche of the manufacturing industry. To keep our company viable and in good standing with our creditor, we had no choice but to give 10% pay cuts and take 1 weeks paid vacation from our 185 employees. Since then, business has picked up and we have given back 5% and the vacation. But due to Obama and his administration extending the unemployment benefits, we have been hit with a $129,000 tax to cover this extension. I have liberals constantly calling me a liar when they hear this; No, it’s not a lie. People think it’s all rosy and nice that the chronically unemployed get more benefits, but it is at the expense of the employers. This obviously makes zero sense, but the politicians in Washington keep it up, and then wonder why businesses are holding their cash on the sidelines and not investing & hiring. You have to be so cautious with where you spend your money as a $129,000 tax bill could easily put a struggling business under(which is obviously happening with other businesses which increases the unemployment rate). It’s simple business 101. The point of running a business is to make money. Taxation and an unsure business climate due to the current administration that know nothing about business is killing our country. Before you liberals spout off, No, we aren’t going out of business, we have been at the top of our industry for 42 years and are looked at as the gold standard in our industry. Stop to listen for a minute and you may learn something instead of spouting the typical business-ignorant comments. But go ahead with your rhetoric and demand taxing the corporations and see where the job numbers go…

    • jean2009

Well then, why not just put your employees back to work and solve two problems. It sounds like you are wasting money hand over foot just to keep people unemployed.

I didn't hear you whining when GWB put this economy in the crapper, and FYI it was G W Bush's administration that didn't know anything about business, or we wouldn't be where we currently are.

Jean ... you, and Liz Carter in Georgia are obviously blindly devoted Obama cheer leaders. No matter how often, or how badly Obama screws up, we can always count on your knee jerk defense of the Obama's. Your lockstep remarks have become so predictable, they have zero credibility. I guess when Obama finally goes down, you'll find some other guru to slobber over. Next time, if you're going to provide blind loyalty to someone, make sure it's someone who deserves it, instead of a self-serving, lying snake, like Barack Obama.

Jean, ignorance is bliss isn’t it? Liberals like you that just don’t get it that lead this country into bankruptcy. Lets explain again- It costs money to hire people, and when you spend money it comes from your bottom line, I cant just raise taxes to cover it, we are a business, not the government. When a business spends more than it should its creditors refuse to lend any more money because they are a high risk. Now you can imagine how a $129,000 tax can throw off that balance? Next time, please think before you show us your ignorance.

Jerry, you act as though more than 2 million jobs during the recession, should have been fixed by this president in 2 and a 1/2 years. You sir, couldn't turn any business around in that amount...I'm sure of it because of your inability to identify or even understand the basis of this situation.

The US economy is consumer driving. more than 65 percent of our GDP is middle class family consumption. At the end of the GW Bush administration, more than 20 million americans lost jobs. Guess what? If people don't have jobs, they are not going to buy products, thus a big whole is created in the economy called a recession where GDP is negative for 2 consecutive quarters.

THAT IS NOT SOMETHING WE CAN FIX OVERNIGHT. Or does it help that small business owners like you, can grasp the origins of the problem, but rather complain about this president, who did not cause it, but rather isn't fixing it fast enough.

I sincerely hope for the sucess of your business, as you employ people. But I fear your employees could be at risk, given your lack of pragmatic thought processes. Business 101

Jerry, you poor, misinformed individual. Have you not derived from these posts that running a business is NOT about making money, it is about providing goods and services to the greater population, and utilizing any extra income through re-distribution to help those less fortunate afford your goods and services so you can remain in business to start the cycle over again. Profit should NOT be your goal, that makes you a capitalist pig. I hope for your sake, you gather your 185 employees weekly, if not daily, to sing kum-by-ya. If not you are not promoting their well being and thus driving up the costs of my government health care. And if you DARE try to pass any of you success to your heirs, we will make it our personal mission to see to it that they don't get one shiney penny, since it's a (evil) family corporation.

Jerry, get over yourself! If you had orders flying through the windows for your products, you would hire the appropriate amount of people to fill them. Don't try to blame your lack of hiring on this president. And certainly people getting unemployment checks IS NOT hurting you or your company.

I don't know about you, but since my 1st job and up to now, the gubmint takes money out of my check for unemployment. Now you might recall, Obama, this president, came into office when this economy was losing, on average 700k jobs a month. That's a lot of jobs lost! In fact those numbers haven't been seen since the Great depression. Just the shear magnitude of those losses will have an affect on every segment of the economy. Are you blaming Obama for that? Or for not fixing it fast enough? It has to be the later, because Obama didn't cause this mess, though you and others would like to believe that

Hard to believe that, but honestly, it wouldn't be that far-fetch of a stretch! When all else failed they were acknowledged CHRISTIANS; and true CHRISTIANS do have consciouses and do believe in repentance. Christians also like to make amends and set things straight.

That has most certainly never been my experience, Liz. From where I sit, as a retired member of the US military, a former small business owner, and a supporter of the president, it looks to me like the GOP/TP is more interested in painting the president incompetent than they are in participating in anything that will bernefit the country. It's been the Religious Right, including W, that has brought this country to the brink, not anything Obama has done.

Old salt, Thank You for your service...and the wise words you've posted here. GOP/TP hate facts and when they are exposed for their un-patriotic efforts to demonize this president. They just continue to sling lie after lie, until the ill informed can find something as small as a vacation, to criticize the president.

I have never seen the political atmosphere this bad in all my years of life. It used to be, when the country was in trouble, both sides put down the politics and rolled up the sleeves. These days the GOP/TP unpatriots roll-up their sleeves to continue the fighting against fellow americans, just to gain back power.....Pathetic

Hey Liz. See what happens when you claim your Chrisianity around here...you are demonized, even by your fellow libs. I agree with you about the philosophies of true Christians. We also like to provide to our communities directly and do it without all of the pomp and circumstance. It's done out of love and loyalty to Him and His children. I know this isn't the "belief blog," but I feel compelled to let Old Salt know that his experience with the few, and what's portrayed on the news, is a far cry from the realities. And if anyone can speak to this, it'd be Liz.

      • Republicans elect and attract the not so smart

        C-Lo,
Its not important, admirable, or even ethical to assign political affiliations to religious beliefs. In the history of this world, nothing has started more wars, killed more people than religion.

That's why we have separation of church and state. Ever heard of that? Unfortunately for the conservatives, they harp about following the constitution but can't seem to keep church or religion out of their politics. So you are saying liberals have the problem here? I think you're confused.

        August 20, 2011 at 11:32 am |
      • C-Lo

Yes, I have heard of the "separation of church and state." I know you need a history lesson on the origin of that statement and how it has woven it's way into our political world. Let's just say that if you agree the Constitution guarantees a "separation of church and state (freedom of religion)," by the language of the 1st Amendment, then by the same logic, public unions should not exist (freedom of assembly), public officials should not be allowed to write/convey op/ed pieces (frreedom of the press). These were written into the constitution to provide protection TO THE PEOPLE FROM THE GOVERNMENT, not the other way around. They do not protect the gov't from the intrutions of assembly, speach, press or religion. Coincidently, freedom of relgion (which includes the oft overlooked phrase "or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;" was the 1st on this list–deeming it to be the most important.

"Nothing has started more wars, killed more people than religion" Really? WW I and II, Korea, Viet Nam, US Civil, Revolutionary, 1812, French Indian, Roman Empire, European empires, Cold war (arguably not a "war" but causation for many of the others," original Afgahn (70's) and Persian Gulf wars, most African continental wars–Not religious wars, geopolitical/economic/land wars. Not to mention the corollary, "Nothing has done more good, saved more lives, comforted more anguished or fed more hungry than religion."

Last, you start by saying "it's not important, admirable...to assign political affiliations to religious beliefs," then next paragraph "conservatives, they harp about following the constitution but can't seem to keep church or religion out of their politics." Don't know if that was your attempt at sarcasm, or just proving hypocritical ignorance, but either way, fails your argument in short order. And there are MANY "Christian Democrats" as well, who want to compell the gov't to do more on behalf of the stricken. Do I assume you want these ideas cast aside as well, because they are calling action "in the name of religion?"

You know something? Im not impressed with our POTUS one bit. Actually, I have the balls unlike most liberals to admit when I am wrong. I was wrong to vote for this bag of wind. This guy is just a good speaker in an empty suit spewing empty promises to gullible Americans. Too little too late on delaying the deportation trials of my relatives, you lost our vote when you cruised the heartland in two $1.1 million dollar busses purchased from Canada, then to have the nerve to speak to the jobless and immediately fly off to Marthas Vinyard in Airforce 1, the rest of your family flying in earlier that day on another government jet at our expense, and spending $50,000 a week on your vacation estate. You Mr. President are out of touch.

C-loI don't quite understand what you are asking of me, but I do believe that 'To whom much is given, much is required' of them. There's a great disparity in this nation between it's wealthy Americans and poor Americans. The average working poor American is has maintained them their wealth. I know that 'the poor will be with us always'; that's also Biblical, but 'the wealth of the unjust is put up for the just'. 'The wages of sin is death'. America has become a Soddom and Gomorrah. It's the new Babylon.
