Presidential reading material

MARTHA'S VINEYARD (CNN) - President Obama and his daughters, Malia and Sasha visited a local bookstore in Vineyard Haven to purchase some books for their summer reading.

No official word on what books the girls bought but White House officials say the president bought two books for himself: The Bayou Trilogy, a collection by Daniel Woodrell and Rodin's Debutante by Ward Just.

The White House also said Mr. Obama brought several books with him to read on the trip:  Cutting for Stone, a novel by Abraham Verghese;  To the End of the Land, a novel by David Grossman; and  The Warmth of Other Suns, which is the story of America's Great Migration, by Isabel Wilkerson.

Each country has its' God given natural resources. The U.S. is a huge cornucopia of raw materials, a free society, and benefits from enormous intellectual property.

All we need to do is let our Country run freely and we'll be fine. We are being our own worst enemy creating regulations that raise the sales price of our products.

Also, in my view we should not be exporting raw materials, we should be processing our raw materials ourselves here on our own soil, and exporting processed goods.

      OBAMA'S BOOK LIST:

      MEIN KAMPF
      MAO'S LITTLE RED BOOK
      THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO

By voting 'Present', Obama just happens to be there, and gets the undeserved credit, for other people's achievements. And, the fools who are duped into giving Obama credit, are putting the survival of America into the hands of an even bigger FOOL !!!

Jean, and Liz Carter, join the list of women who display blind infatuation for losers ... just like the brain dead women who follow, correspond with, and even marry convicted serial killers ... like, Ramirez ... Manson ... and Bianchi. These women are addicted to unrequited love ... and, no matter how much reality exposes the objects of their affection to be undeserving ... they blindly defend, and slobber over these men, with all their might. If anybody has the audacity to question, or criticize their false gods, vile insults, and baseless accusations of racism are their knee jerk responses. The rest of society should pity these poor confused women ... while, at the same time, not fall into the same trap of ignorant bliss they have chosen. Besides, in this case, we are talking about who has the experience, judgment, character, and integrity to determine the survival of our children and our country ... and, the last two years have shown us how America's destruction can result from putting ultimate power over all of us, in the hands of an empty suit, with all style, and no substance, which has been created, and continually sold to the public, by a non-stop biased media.

I support our President and I will vote for him in 2012. I am a young 27 year old, unemployed, single mother and student. I believe that President Obama understands the many social and economic issues that all Americans are facing. He will continue moving our country forward through these difficult days. These United States of America will become greater than its former days.

Remember, President Obama said, "Let us remember that, if this financial crisis taught us anything, it's that we cannot have a thriving Wall Street while Main Street suffers.

Lets stop attacking our President and help him rebuild our Country.

Please DO YOUR FAIR SHARE TOO!
I HOPE YOU WILL PARTICIPATE AND DO YOUR PART
The President ordered the cabinet to cut $100 million from the $3.5
        Trillion federal budget.
I'm so impressed by this sacrifice that I have decided to do the same
thing with my personal budget. I spend about $2000 a month on groceries,
household expense, medicine, utilities, etc, but it’s time to get out
the budget cutting axe, go through my expenses, and cut back.
I'm going to cut my spending at exactly the same ratio, 1/35,000 of my
total budget. After doing the math, it looks like instead of spending
$2000 a month; I'm going to have to cut that number by six cents. Yes, I'm
going to have to get by with $1999.94, but that’s what sacrifice is all
about. I'll just have to do without some things, that are, frankly,
luxuries. I am going to take one for the team !!!!

      • C-Lo

Actually Jean, if that was the case, CNN should be paying you. I'd much rather read your diatribes than the scat that these interns churn out. When you stay on topic and avoid the personal attacks (given you cannot seem to stay away from your childish psudonyms, which really de-merits your arguments), wrong-headed though I believe they are, it at least gives way to discussion. Unfortunately you too often get jumping into the name calling far more than you try to make full arguments for your views–in one case only saying the health care act was the best piece of legislation passed. WHY? You're on Medicare (I assume because of your admission to age). Why wasn't Medicare D considered the best piece of legislation (one of Bush's monstrocities).

Sorry, getting off topic on this thread. Bottom line, you do better for the Communist Nationalist Network than most of these writers.

Why is it easier to criticiize than to do something constructive.

Lower interest rates on credit cards will get money flowing again in some spheres. People working together to make things better, another seemingly nove; idea in these times. One thing that the recent debacle with the debt ceiling debate has achieved is lowering the spirits of the country. I felt drained and in no mood to spend any of my pennies.

While we talk about all the matteres that make things worse, try ltalking about the positive things that actually make things better.

Regarding tax issues: What is the big deal about taking OUR hard earned money from taxes and making it work for the country and the people. Tax cuts are taken before or after you get paid. The rich take their tax cuts before they have to pay taxes and the poor have to wait for cuts to be given to them after. The trick is to use the money wisely. Hoarding is not a very good option nor is one-sided spending on wars and the like.

      August 22, 2011 at 3:11 pm |
      • FrancescaF

Have you tried doing this in your own life? It is hard to cut when people are starving and without work. By the same measure, it is hard to cap things that have already reached their limit. That leaves balancing as the only option.

the only one that can override it is me and I don't and have not in 11 years

      August 22, 2011 at 3:39 pm |
      • FrancescaF

It is such a pity that a democratic nation cannot use those same autocratic rules to operate. Can you imagine what would happen if you had to ask another group of people to approve your budget? That is another form of government.

Working on a strict budget seems to suggest that one does not have any money in case of emergencies. What about giving a bit extra of what you have to say thank-you to your workers. Remember, "all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." Life is not all about making money although money may inform the quality of your life.

If you were truly wise, you would actually be a trillionaire by now. The very rich know exactly what to do with their money to remain rich. Giving to others is just one of those things. So as a wise philopsopher said "Give now, so that the season of giving will be yours and not your inheritors."

Jean you show just how out of touch you are with the business world. Companies are not monarchy or a dictatorships. They have board of directors and are accountable to the share holders. No wonder you Liberals hate corporations. you do not understand their structure.

        August 22, 2011 at 5:13 pm |
      • jean2009

@ joe I know very well what a board of directors and shareholders do, but that is not how any country is run.
I think you haven't a clue as to how any country, especially ours operates. It is not solely operated for the benefit of the haves aligned against the have-nots. Minorities do have rights in a democracy, and that seems to be where you have a major problem in distinguishing that they do.

        August 22, 2011 at 5:35 pm |
      • C-Lo

Jean–our country is set up very much like a corporation, Pres=CEO–sets general direction/policy/vision and is the face of the company/country. The board=congress who provides the framework in which to meet those visions. If the board and CEO (congress and Pres) have different ideas which direction to take the ship, then the shareholders/voters are given the opportunity to replace them. Just like in a corp, the shareholders/voters don't directly elect the leader, they give direction to Congress/board who to elect. The board can remove the CEO, technically Congress can remove the Pres.
Both a company and the country are "profit" driven. How do they get the most "bang for the buck." Companies earn their money through competitively priced products/services (and I know we can get into a whole discussion about that, but let's just take it prima facie this is how true open markets act). The gov't "earns" it's money through taxation of producing individuals/companies with the iron fist of the IRS. Both then have to make decisions on how to make the most of these "profits." If the electorate in it's given for doesn't agree with the direction taken by the leaders, it votes it out. Which happened in 2006, 2008, 2010, and probably again in 2012.

I would submit that '06/'08 were votes against foreign policies of the Republicans, while 10/12 will be voices against the domestic policies of the Dems.

Honestly, I don't believe you've been associated with either one, you loud-mouth, jealous, hateful, OBAMA-hating trick of a clown! C-lo; I will use whatever terminology I'd like to use when I'm describing the slanderous behavior or the over-the-top, unecessary verbal abuse of a poster on this blog towards any other poster; ESPECIALLY if it's waged against the few blog OBAMA supporters, because I am one! I've been subject to that type of ill-behavior manytimes and you or nobody complained or denounced it. I used boy scouts, indicating my view that it must have been as far as Joe ever made it militarily; and he flunked that! MILITARY?

    August 23, 2011 at 12:08 pm |

My point, Liz, was not to degrade Boy Scouts by making equating them to joe...I fully understood your reference to boy scout vs marine. Mind you, I wasn't a boy scout myself, but I know they uphold higher standards than the insults hurled by joe.

C-lo; it seems to me that you should be calling down these so-called US Veterans and military people; some of whom scream out loud their disdain and racists views against the President and his administration! You ought to be concerned that they're literally equating and attributing that type of ill-behavior and dismissive conduct to the UNITED STATES military. Boy Scouts and ROTC set the stages to possible military entry. Militarily, that's where loyalty, rules and respect are first learned, I thought?!?

You're right and wrong, Liz. You're right that I should be calling out the behaviors like joe, but you are more enjoyable to talk to.

You are wrong that the military is where loyalty, rules and respect are first learned–these are learned at home. ROTC, yes leads to military (is military–college/high school version of boot camp for officers). Boy Scouts, not so much. Mayby historically (i.e. your generation) as it was the "natural progression" of "manhood." But these days, most of the Scouts I have known go on to serve local communities and college, not the military. Could be geographical too...don't know.

PS joe's attitude toward the various presidents is not uncommon among many of the vets I have heard speak out. And, yes, I have heard the vocal liberal vets/actives as well–so I am not discounting thier voice/service by any means. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, we need politicians out of the white house and leaders to step in.

Politics should be the stuff of Congress. The degredation of this country as a whole started with/after JFK. Yes, we've made great strides in civil liberties since then (and I understand your view that a lot of these are smoke and mirrors), but in a lot of other respects, our social fabric is threadbare. We equate too many luxuries to rights and forget about responsibilites(on both sides). In my opinion, Reagan and Clinton were relatively strong, Nixon, Carter, Bush 41, relatively weak. Bush 43, strong after 9/11, but let it go to his head. Obama is in over his head. If the country was in such bad shape after Bush, why should a junior senator be brought in? Honestly. Race, politics and everything else aside, what true qualifications did he have? Why him over Clinton? She at least spent 8 years "in the shadow" of her husband and a couple years in congress.

Actually the degradation of this country started under Reagan. Kennedy was about bringing people together...Reagan was the start of class warfare the rich against the poor.

Anyone who considers Bush 43 strong is blowing smoke. Fail.

Jean, you make me laugh...thank you for your sense of humor and source of entertainment...

So far right of Attila the Hun? fiscally, maybe, and I've said before I consider myself a libertarian, fiscally conservative and socially liberal. The "Communist Nationalist Network" was aimed at this "publication" not you, although after re-reading and seeing how defensive you can get, I can see why you felt this way. What I was trying to say was that your comments are what have me reading what they pass for "journalism" not the journalists themselves. Didn't mean to imply you were the commie (but maybe you are, you are at least heavily leftist).

I commend you for when you do keep things on track, and defy your attempts at personal attacks, then you turn around and call me worse than Attila? Ha, Ha, Ha...point made.

If you re-read my posting on Bush 43 being a strong president, I specifically clarified that it was in the aftermath of 9/11. where his approval rating based on gallop polls stayed between 80 and 90%. I also clarified that he let it go to his head, which, wait...let me spell it out for you, is to say that he made poor use of this momentum and support–which are not strong leadership skills.

Country headed downhill with REAGAN??? PLEASE! JFK's death cut him short of what he may or may not have been. Yes he was loved by the country, and started a lot of things in motion that LBJ continued...he averted the Cuban Missle Crisis but botchted the Bay of Pigs. Let's not forget it was LBJ who got us into Viet Nam and essentially the Nixon Administration who got us out. Nixon was also responsible for enforcing de-segregation of the South and the EPA...two of many Republican accomplishments modern day libs love to embrace. Yes, he will always be known for Watergate, a definate "black eye" not only on his administration, but on the establishment as a whole and detracted from what he accomplished.

Reagan the Left's second most hated man (next to 43) was, even in your view, responsible for the eventual collapse of the Soviets. Yes it was in the works for a long time, and yes it became more of a spending war, but the peace dividend resulted in one of the most prolific growth decade in US, if not world history. Bare in mind that the "spending us blind" went primarily to the DOD that, coupled with spending in space exploration, brought about a lot of the technology that contributed to that 90's boom.

So again, throw your persona insults, attack me as you may, but realize the Republicans have done far more for this country than you will ever give credit for...and by the way, your Huffington Post resourcing is laughable at best–if you are going to use sources, you may want to use ones that at least give the appearance of "fair."

Ah yes! Seems I got the world started on Joe; simple minded as he is. I'm a 25 year military vet and nothing about this guy says MILITARY..but yes, we fight and die so he can be free to be an idiot..AMERICA is great..god bless the present and pastCommander in Chiefs; I've saluted them all with pride because that's what we military folks do.

Pete, LOL! Why? Is it because you said so? Why IS President Obama 'the worst President since Jimmy Carter'? BTW, I don't remember Jimmy Carter being so bad. He was met by a Congress much like the one OBAMA is having to deal with! As far as his accomplishments or performance as President, where was he any worse, if at all, than GWB 43 who put us in this fix? Will YOU pull YOUR head out of your A**, and point out some facts and figures to substantiate your broad-brushed, STUPID claim against OBAMA and CARTER?

@Howard, I guess you have personal knowledge on the type of women who are taken with serial killers, corresponds with them and often marries them. LOL! You got one infatuated enough to marry you didn't you? LOL! Since you mentioned it, you do sound like one! Jean and I are not that infatuated with OBAMA, because we both have non-serial killer husbands whom we love! We're infatuated with pointing out the truth of what's really going on and being deviously waged against this President by kooks like yourself!

@RW, thank you for your service to the nation and thank you for your post. That's what I thought! I've always heard or exprienced nothing else but honor, respect, patriotism, and loyalty to Commanders in Chief! Even if you had a difference of opinion on his decisions, you're always faithful to the cause. That's what I was always raised to believe! Most real military men and women, in active duty, discharged {honorably anyway) or retired salute a US President, past and present with dignity and pride.

talk to a seasoned COMBAT Vet one who has seen the inside and outside
I'm not down playing any vet God bless them all, But a combat Vet has seen it all
You beat on Joe. Joe is a Combat Vet and is one of those guy who did much that you will never know about
He's one of those risk takers I know because my Brother was one of those guy May he rest in peace.

Pete–Liz, I belive, is married to a disabled Viet Nam vet so she's probably pretty aware of a COMBAT Vet. Yes, she and Jean can be vicious toward Joe, and he handles it pretty well for the most part and responds in kind. I've seen Joe's frustration and share it at times, particularly with jean, but I don't think this is one area you can call Liz out on for that reason.

Thanks C-lo. You are right. Pete, I honor and respect ALL of my US Military. My father was a US ARMY veteran of WW2, The Pacific-Phillipines, uncles and cousins were of that same war, as well as the KOREAN WAR. My husband was a helicopter gunner and worked as a US MARINE 'recon' of the VIETNAM WAR. Yes they have seen and been ordered to do a lot! I know that you are the prime reasons we're able to be free to discuss the issues, debate back and forth, and to even post opinions! I know FREEDOM ain't FREE!
