Obama’s jobs plan: a work in progress President Obama’s job’s plan is taking shape during his Martha’s Vineyard vacation, but a White House aide was unwilling to say that a framework had been constructed. “It’s fair to say that there are some detailed policy discussions…and evaluations that are being made,” said Deputy White House spokesman Josh Earnest during his first ever on-camera briefing. But when pressed by CNN on the finer point of a framework, Earnest said “the process is ongoing, I don't have anything more to add to that.” President Obama spoke Wednesday with two members of his Council on Jobs and Competitiveness about ideas to put Americans back to work. In a conference call with General Electric CEO Jeffrey Immelt and American Express CEO Ken Chenault, the president was presented with two initiatives the council is reviewing. One involves increasing the number of engineers graduating from U.S. colleges, the other idea would provide relief for unemployed construction workers by finding them green jobs retrofitting buildings. Earnest said those ideas could become part of the president’s plan. “It's fair to say that the president expects to draw on the work and expertise of the people who are serving on his jobs council into that policymaking process.” His comments came on the same day that the Congressional Budget Office delivered a gloomy economic forecast. Unemployment in the U.S. is expected to remain above 8% until at least 2014. The non-partisan CBO also projects that the nation is on track to accrue a $1.3 trillion deficit this year. President Obama was briefed on the report by Brian Deese, his Deputy Director of the National Economic Council. Earnest said the report highlights progress that has been made, but admitted that “it also makes clear that there is a lot more that we have to do.” The job’s plan that White House aides say will include “new ideas” will be announced by the president sometime after Labor Day. |

The CBO report yesterday that unemployment will still be 8.5% in November, 2012, may be wishfull thinking. There very well may be new momentum upwards on unemployment percentage in coming weeks.
Q2 growth is being downgraded to 1, matching Q1. If Q3 and Q4 improve to a growth of 2, growth for the year will be 1.5. Government is still sized for growth of about 3.75. Government needs to be pared down in size to be in proportion to growth. Growth of 1.5 – 2 seems to be emerging to be the "new normal".

And why are you again misstating the work record of President Obama? He held many jobs other than "community organizer" which was his job for 3 years 1985-1988...in and of itself knowing how a community works is a great experience.
He also worked as a lawyer for several law firms, taught constitutional law for 12 years, served as an Illinois State Senator, as a U.S. Senator, served on the board of several non-profit organizations, wrote 5 books, and during his college years worked as a telemarketer, and filed medical records...just to mention a few.

We've got a jobs problem but businesses don't have a profit problem. Investing in infrastructure and education will create jobs. This initiative was rolled out a bit late. I guess it's better to begin a term with healthcare reform then end it with healthcare reform.

I don't know where you live, but I have seen many of those stimulus job sites and they have, and are, putting people to work. In many cases they are putting people to work and you never realize that the job was created by stimulus money. Much of the funding has gone in grants that keep police and firefighters on duty, provide funding for public health vaccine programs, provide grants for colleges programs, helped fund new school construction, to provide businesses research grants, improve waste water treatment facilities, the list is long, and almost every county in every states has received some type funding. Not every site posted a green and orange ARRA sign like highway construction...but they were funded by stimulus grant money.
Especially if you want to get health care legislation done.
I am a supporter and fan of President Obama, and at the end of the day, I think that his ideas are, over all, the right ones for the country; but my hope is that he will go big on a jobs plan.I realize that there has to be concern about the deficit, but the state of the economy is having an affect on people's lives in real time, with so much uncertainty, and so many people out of work.It's great to have engineers graduating from college, and some construction projects, but it all sounds like putting a band-aid on a gaping wound.I think that we are at a " the truth will set you free" moment.The president needs to be F.D.R., and do what ,I think, in his heart, he knows has to be done, and propose some big jobs projects, even if it costs him his presidency.Over time, they would pay for themselves because of more people working and paying into the tax system.I think anything other than that , at this stage, will only make people even more angry because it won't make a real difference, and cause the president to lose anyway.
What a sad commentary to read how we as Americans are so dumb. We believe everything we read or hear, whether it's right or wrong. I am predicting that the Obama Administration will come back with a plan that every American can believe in, and the climate of our economy will change for the best. I believe that Obama's policies, especially the stimulus, worked for us during our crises. Of course those who opposes him will say they didn't. These tough times need for tough decisions to be made and I believe Obama made some, and during these next few months, more tough decisions will be made by him, that will put us back on the road to recovery. Stop the negative talk and pray for our country.

Everyone with any sanity or brains has lost respect for the tea party and GOP, and history will right that you tried to destroy this great nation to bring down the first half white president. Just curious... where is the Republican jobs proposal. You know, the one they ran on in 2010? I haven't heard anything from that side of the house that would add or save one job. We have had record low taxes for seven years. What has that gotten us? A recession, a skyrocketting debt, less value in our retirement accounts and more poverty. Sounds like a winning plan. You know what they say about those who keep failing yet continue to do the same thing. So I give anyone credit who tries to do something even if it fails. Better that than to do nothing at all. That is what the Republicans have been doing since Obama was elected.

The Republicans have drafted several plans in the last 8 months since taking control of the House, meeting obstruction every step of the way with either Harry Reid refusing to let the bills see the floor of the Senate, or a promise by Obama to veto them if they did happen to reach his desk
Yes I have heard the definition of insanity and/or foolishness, which you relate to the low tax rates equating to a (lack) of job creation. So, in your honest opinion, based on these facts, do you think President Obama is insane or a fool? I ask because if you look take two seconds to google "obama eyes tax cuts" you will find he has been pondering this himself in various forms since at least 2009.

People wake up the Government is not going to get smaller, there are far to many things that need to get done in this country to be focused on this ridiculous idea, smaller government just not going to happen. The problem is the dysfunctional and irresponsible people who are in government that have forgotten they are there to serve the people. I hear the most ridiculous things on the blogs mainly from the GOP/Tea Party. Why are they not offering solutions, oh yeah they have none. The reality is the Bush Administration pulled off the biggest bank heist in history and left this country upside down, there is no one man to blame, and no one man is going to fix it, "WE THE PEOPLE" have to fix this mess, by getting rid of all these crazy, greed mongering, insane people who are hell bent on destroying America. Just because a politicians gets a bunch of money from corporations or wealthy people like the Koch brothers does not mean they are qualified to be a leader or represent the people. It's time America cleans house starting with the Congress and Senate, and re-write the rules. These people should have a cap on their pay, and not make more than $50, 000 a year with term limits. The Congress and Senate should be required to pay for their own insurance and have the same options for a retirement plan as the American people. It's time to put away this privileged way of life for politicians, who are not serving the people. Also once their term is up Democrat,Republican,Tea Party,Egalitarianism,Independent,etc. they receive no lifetime retirement pay, they go get another job just like the people they represent or file for unemployment, none of them are above the people. Also, if a person holds such views and speaks rhetoric promoting hate to the point they can not represent all of the people, but only a certain portion of the people they should automatically be disqualified from ever holding any position in the government. I'm only getting started...TIME TO CLEAN HOUSE AMERICA.

They are offering solutions–smaller gov't, less spending–maybe radically different than what your interpretations of solutions...no, wait, you want reductions in spending for Congress and Senate, you want less influence by big money...you mention Koch Bros, but what about Soros? What about Buffett? What about GE or Charlie Ergen. Or is THAT big money influence ok because it supports YOUR guy (gal)?
Maybe if you took time to look at some of the fundamentals the Tea Party Republicans actually stand or and not the media spin of a hate group, you just might find some of your ideas and ideals are not that different, based on what you've stated here at least.
To fight unemployment you need to create WORK. If there is work to be done, companies will hire people to do the work. The people they hire will once again have a job. These newly employed people that have a job will pay taxes instead of collecting taxes disguised as unemployment benefits. Government regulations cost money to comply with and destroy wealth that could be used to hire workers. .
To avoid expensive government regulations, companies are looking elsewhere to open new factories. GE just moved their entire medical imaging division to China because of the Obamacare tax burden on medical imaging device manufacturers. It's in the law. Google it!
Government intervention into business cost jobs. Thew fewer jobs available the fewer people work and pay taxes. With fewer people getting their paycheck from an employer, the more people will receive unemployment benefits from the government which comes from tax money collected from people that work.
More government intervention into the free market destroys jobs and decreases tax revenue. Why is this so hard for the people of this country to figure out?
Personally I think that the majority understand how it works. Some call it "getting into the game". Why work, when you can collect from others that have a job? You can collect instead of earning enough money to live on?
Spreading the wealth? I don't think it works. How about spreading the demise and downfall instead.

Increase the number of engineers graduating college?? How about finding a job for all of the engineers that graduated college in the last 2 years that have yet to find jobs? There are going to be plenty of Masters engineering students graduating soon, and they still won't be able to find a job. Graduate more engineers, but limit their opportunities by limiting funds to NASA? Where are the engineers supposed to be going?
Survival of the fittest. If you want a job you can get a job, its all about the effort and time you put into making yourself open to different employment oppurtunities. If americans don't want to stoop to a lower level of employment then yes the unempoyment rate will stay above 8% and continue to climb. If your field of expertise is seeing a shortage in jobs, stop whining about it. Go develop a new set of skills, that's why we are here in the first place...right? We should always be improving ourselves, why even exist if we are not.

I don't see myself as a racist, Liz...maybe you do, but I support the Tea Party ideas of smaller gov't and less spending. I wish the liberal media would focus on that message–but then there'd be those libs who would still spin it as racist simply because it went against the Obama administration.

However, I do resent the fact that THIS President, out of all of the previous ones, some whose failed policies are the root reasons we are here, is dismissed, critiqued, demeaned, stripped of his due recognition as President, rejected, wisdom, intellect and birthplace questioned, and I'd just say, TOTALLY harrassed everyday!
