Take Irene seriously

On his last full day of vacation, President Obama spoke to the traveling press pool and warned east coast residences to be prepared for hurricane Irene.  This is part of what he had to say.

I cannot stress this highly enough:  If you are in the projected path of this hurricane, you have to take precautions now.  Don’t wait.  Don’t delay.  We all hope for the best, but we have to be prepared for the worst.  All of us have to take this storm seriously.  You need to listen to your state and local officials, and if you are given an evacuation order, please follow it.  Just to underscore this point:  We ordered an aircraft carrier group out to sea to avoid this storm yesterday. So if you’re in the way of this hurricane, you should be preparing now.

If you aren’t sure how to prepare your families or your home or your business for a hurricane or any other emergency, then you can visit Ready.gov - that's Ready.gov - or Listo.gov.  That's Listo.gov.

Now, since last weekend, FEMA has been deploying its Incident Management Assistance Teams to staging areas in communities up and down the coast.  FEMA has millions of liters of water, millions of meals, and tens of thousands of cots and blankets, along with other supplies, pre-positioned along the Eastern Seaboard.  And the American Red Cross has already begun preparing shelters inNorth Carolinaand other states.

These resources are all being coordinated with our state and local partners, and they stand ready to be deployed as necessary. But, again, if you are instructed to evacuate, please do so.  It's going to take time for first responders to begin rescue operations and to get the resources we've pre-positioned to people in need.  So the more you can do to be prepared now - making a plan, make a supply kit, know your evacuation route, follow instructions of your local officials - the quicker we can focus our resources after the storm on those who need help the most.

To sum up, all indications point to this being a historic hurricane.  Although we can’t predict with perfect certainty the impact of Irene over the next few days, the federal government has spent the better part of last week working closely with officials in communities that could be affected by this storm to see to it that we are prepared.  So now is the time for residents of these communities - in the hours that remain - to do the same.  And FEMA and Craig Fugate, the director of FEMA, will be keeping people closely posted in the next 24, 48 hours.

Taking bets now that the GOP and Tea-Party will blame Obama for Hurricane Irene.

oh like the libs went after President Bush on the Florida hurricane? Gosh BO did cut his vacation short a couple of hours...bet your fannie BO will manage this for some political hay...bet your life actually.

I will take that bet and double your bet that Obama will blame this storm for the weak economy. Lets recap who/what he has blamed so far, Arab Spring, Japanese Quake and Tsunami, GOP, Weak European Economies, Fox News, and wait for it ATMs, to name a few.................Now for the who, Limbaugh, Hannitity, Beck, Bush, Millionaires, Billionaires, Private Jet Owners (who he is vacationing with) and wait for it.................The Mad Money Man Kramer (who actually donated $100 to his campaign) to name just a few. Obama owns the blame game, he is the leader of the blame game, that is all he does!

the blame is still president Bush.

@Rich Well if I remember correctly it is Bush's fault for our bad economy, or at least part of it. Because of him we owe more money to China than even the BILLIONAIRES can pay back (this is called exaggeration, so deal with it!!!) We are also in 2-3 wars that we are spending millions of dollars and lives on. I mean seriously, the man has RUINED things, Obama comes to fix things, & it's all his fault! I think Bush should choke on pretzels again so all you people can have something else to worry about...

And the conservative doesn't blame Obama for anything? Think about it... both sides blame each other for everything and both sides think they are right all the way even putting their countrymen at risk. It is BOTH REPUBLICAN AND DEMOCRAT that owns the blame game. THINK about it. Don't be conservative or liberal anymore... be independent. It is the only way to let go of this "blame game" we americans have for so long endured.

Plenty of hot air blowing with no conclusions.
The Georgia House passed a tough immigration law that would
require employers to verify the legal status of workers they hire.

House Bill 87, which has been likened to the Arizona immigration law,
was passed 113-56 and goes to the state Senate.

Under the measure, Georgia companies would be required to use E-Verify,
a federal database, to check the documentation of current and prospective
employees. That database had been created by Congress as a voluntary,
      discretionary resource.

The bill criminalizes the transportation of illegal immigrants and allows
law enforcement officials to check the legal status of people in custody
      in certain situations.
Apologists for illegal immigration try to paint it as
a victimless crime, but the fact is that illegal immigration
causes substantial harm to American citizens and
legal immigrants, particularly those in the most vulnerable
sectors of our population — the poor, minorities, and

Illegal immigration causes an enormous drain on
public funds. The seminal study of the costs of
immigration by the National Academy of Sciences found
that the taxes paid by immigrants do not begin to
cover the cost of services received by them.
The quality of education, health care and other services
for Americans are undermined by the needs of
endless numbers of poor, unskilled illegal entrants.

Additionally, job competition by waves of illegal immigrants desperate
for any job unfairly depresses the wages and working conditions offered
to American workers, hitting hardest at minority workers and those without
      high school degrees.

Lets name all the things Bush was blamed for that he did not create. 1. 1999 .com burst that lead to the 2000 recession that started before GW was elected but libs till blamed him, 2 9/11 when was an intelligence bust that dated back to 1995 but rather than let Bill share the blame as was appropriate with Bush they blamed it all on Bush, 3 Tsunami, 4 Global Warming, 5 Katrina (as a racist act because GW is white and New Orleans is largely Black) but where were Nagen and Blanco, no one knows., 5 Hurricane Ike Sept. 2008 which by today's rules of blame and lack of responsibility absolve Bush of the 2008 recession.

He leadeth me beside the still factories.
He restoreth my faith in the Republican party.
He guideth me in the path of unemployment for his

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the bread

line, I shall fear no hunger, for his bailouts are with

me. He has anointed my income with taxes,

        My expenses runneth over.

Obama's whole crew worked together and was totally prepared with everything in place when Hurricane Irene came ashore. Complete opposite of the Bush gang who were absolutly discomboberated with Hurricane Katrina and yet they had the same amount of time to prepare. Bush never even checked in with New Orleans for a week afterwards, what a difference caring makes.

Awww....I see somebody is a little sore or has a poopy in their diapers (??) Grow up Mac, that line is nothing more than a bumper sticker. Means nothing. If you can't see Bush made huge mistakes, then you need to just take your meds and hope this president can clean it all up.

Listen, I hate to point out the obvious, but the destruction of this country occurred before Obama got sworn in. Only IDIOTS, COMPLETE MORONS, try to fix a problem without knowing its origin and the actions that created the problems. In other words, you must define the origins of a problem, before you can even begin to fix them. If this is new to you, then you shouldn't have dropped out of school in the 3rd grade.

So, if you are tired of the blame Bush thing, you have a while to go. Because intelligent people, like the President, have to work hard to figure out how to clean up the mess.

And this lesson was totally free. Now you go lay down, and we'll wake you when its all fixed – LOL

I thought it was governor Blanco who disappeared on day 4 and I know I saw a news blast of Mayor Nagen saying everything was alright, from his 5 star luncheon, while the levy broke. All the while the feds were begging for permission from the state to declare a formal disaster area but no one answered their calls. Or the upstate LA sherriff I saw interviewed on TV on day 2 that had is caravan of emergency responders, fire trucks, county law officers etc turned away by the Louisana State Police at the order of New Orleans Major Nagen. Did any of you suffering Bush derangement syndrome see that. Oh the 400 N. Orleans school buses sitting in 6 feet of water while Nagen cried that the feds were not sending buses to evacuate the "people". If Obama can claim the weather for his troubles in lifting a recession then Bush should claim Katrina for part of the economic problems and Ike for the rest.

We could use this money to fuel America not Mexico--

How many migrants does it take to remit $21 billion a year
        back to Mexico?

        14,000,000 illegals sending home $1,500 a year

        10,000,000 illegals sending home $2,100 a year

        5,000,000 illegals sending home $4,200 a year

Did they undercount how many Illegals here?

"Illegal alien households are estimated to use $2,700 a year more
in services than they pay in taxes, creating a total fiscal
burden of nearly $10.4 billion on the federal budget in 2002."

"A May 28, 2004 study by Bendixen & Associates found that legal
and illegal immigrants send a total of $30 billion to their home
countries on an annual basis. Mexico receives $13.3 billion a year.
The largest amount in remittances ($9.6 billion) is sent from
California, followed by New York ($3.6 billion), Texas
($3.2 billion) and Florida ($2.5 billion). Of those surveyed by
the study, 24% were Latin American-born U.S. citizens, 39% were
legal residents, and 32% were illegal aliens. Sixty-one per cent
of those surveyed send remittances overseas at least once a month.
A typical remittance is between $150 and $250."

Goodwin- you are a fool! Pres. Bush had FEMA contact LA before Katrina and offer help. The idiot democrats in charge of LA told them they had it under control. The Fed cannot go into a state without the states permission. After it went south, they blamed the president and moronic yankoffs like you actually believed it. @ truthman

We can take the message seriously because your views of the president have nothing to do with how dangerous a hurricane can be. If your in the soon to be affected areas then you should be listening to our president. Keep your political views separate from sound advice on natural disasters.

White House sources today claimed that the First Lady has spent $10million of U.S. taxpayers' money on vacations alone in the past year.
Branding her 'disgusting' and 'a vacation junkie', they say the 47-year-old mother-of-two has been indulging in five-star hotels, where
she splashes out on expensive massages and alcohol.

'It's disgusting. Michelle is taking advantage of her privileged position while the most hardworking Americans can barely afford a week
\or two off work. 'When it's all added up, she's spent more than $10million in taxpayers' money on her vacations.

The First Lady is believed to have taken 42 days of holiday in the past year, including a $375,000 break in Spain and a four-day ski trip
to Vail, Colorado, where she spent $2,000 a night on a suite at the Sebastian hotel. And the first family's nine-day stay in Martha's Vineyard
is also proving costly, with rental of the Blue Heron Farm property alone costing an estimated $50,000 a week.
'Michelle also enjoys drinking expensive booze during her trips. She favours martinis with top-shelf vodka and has a taste for rich sparking wines.
'The vacations are totally Michelle's idea. She's like a junkie. She can't schedule enough getaways, and she lives from one to the next – all the
while sticking it to hardworking Americans.

      God, more teabagger lies.

Bush and his family took at least 2000 days of vacation in 8 years, which comes out to about 250 days of vavction ayear ( more than 2/3 of each year in office). Dont believ me, look it up. It is on Politifact.com. How much did that cost us, I wonder? Where were you hypocrites when the Texan idiot drove the economy off the clift while vacation on his ranch in Crawford?

      Please STFU. Dismissed!!!

What a fool. You act as if none of us have memories. George did spend time at the ranch where he had many meetings with his cabinet and advisors, but the 250 days a year is a figment of your delusional mind.

George W. Bush spent 490 Days at Crawford Ranch, 487 Days at Camp David, 43 Days at Kennebunkport Compound ...1020 days vacation, or 2.79 years of his 8 year presidency...or (1/3rd) of his presidency on vacation.

Bush was on day 28 of a vacation at the Crawford Ranch when Katrina hit.

Where were you, and why were you not commenting then?

Jean, So what is it, do you say that presidents work 24/7 or that they take vacations? Make up your mind.

The fact is President Bush would fly to Crawford Ranch or Camp David most very weekend. That makes over 2.5 years of weekends. you have been telling your Liberal hate for so long you never took the time to think.

wow....waa waa waa, Somebody get Ellie a tissue. All those complaints about this president. There obviously can't be any reason for him to do anything other than sit in the oval office. I mean vacations, smay-cation...who needs them right? Of course listen to whiners like you, day in day out, with zero solution but a boat load of criticism wouldn't be a reason for needing a vacation. The fact you and your kind would fight this president to even save american lives, is not a reason to need a vacation. Of course it isn't.

Tell ya what....get in the fight to save this country, instead of being a naysayer and its possible you might garner some margin of respect from intelligent people. Otherwise, your best audience is the faux news losers, where stupid is glorified.

Hurricane Update: The TEA Party called to protest against Hurricane Irene. They demanded to see Irene's Birth Certificate and wanted Irene to pay up before it can cause any damage. Meanwhile, GOP leaders strongly supported a tax cut plan that would make Irene "trickle down". Democrats called Irene the younger sister of Katrina and blamed everything on Bush.

It's a good thing that they have a plan and nobody's BSing trying to figure out who's gonna get the contracts. Katrina was shameful, and I know Obama doesn't want to go through any of that. The tornados in Alabama was the test for this I hope. Those towns that were wipedout are being rebuilt at a blinding pace.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is now offering free consultations with FEMA representatives at hardware and home improvement stores in three Alabama counties affected by the recent tornadoes. The outreach program will be expanded greatly in the coming weeks.

This how it should be done, I think Obama will pull a Dick Cheney with a shotgun if somebody messes this up.

Let's help the President move this country forward. The hurricane and earthquake are wake up calls that we need to improve our infrastructure. It's a shame there is so much bitterness and blaming and not enough cooperation and basic respect. A strong and efficient government translates to a stable economy, sustained growth and a quality of life unequal to anywhere else in the world. We could be most prosperous country in the world and it all starts by working together and putting away poisonous words. Regardless of your persuasion, let's help OUR president.

The President is doing a great job and meeting with his Fema staff is the right thing to do.

Some of you will never like this President because of the color of his skin it is not about his poilicies . He is not the only President to use teleprompters and want be the last. I know some of you wish you had half the education he has so don't imply that he can't read how ridiculous.

I know you are frustrated because you can't get into his head and don't know how he is thinking he is a multi-task person something we all wish we could do. He has a quiet demeanor about him but I can assure you if he is pushed too hard you will see a different man and then what will you say he is an ANGRY BLACK MAN, which will not be true.

I have always said that President Obama came up all of a sudden and everytime someone try to tear him down some major event happens to bring our attention back to this President and reminds us what he has been telling the American People that major improvements are needed for our country. All the GOP is saying is NO< NO< NO< NO<

Americans if you believe in the power of prayer now is the time to pay attention with all the devastation that is happening to our county today. President Obama is a man with a purpose to bring this country into the 21st century with modern technology, lifting up the middle class and education for our young people who are the future leaders of this country. There is no GOP Candidate , GOP representative that is talking about the future of these young people instead they are trying to take away their grants for College.

      Start Praying
Obama is the shepherd I did not want.
He leadeth me beside the still factories.
He restoreth my faith in the Republican party.
He guideth me in the path of unemployment for his

      party's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the bread

line, I shall fear no hunger, for his bailouts are with

me. He has anointed my income with taxes,

      My expenses runneth over.
Surely, poverty and hard living will follow me all

Cry me a river!.....Some folks are out living under bridges and expressways, Pete and have been for a long time. Many are our own 'beloved' veterans...Vietnam Veterans at that!....And I bet you pass them right on by don't you Pete? You don't even stop to ask and offer help do you? WHY?....because you're living in a 'mortgaged house' and are still whinning! Stop mocking the 23 Psalm and be thankful. 'The LORD is my shepherd...I SHALL not want'!

Lost my bet! GOOD! My husband, who's also a veteran goes out about twice a month in a van along with a couple of other vets, gathering up as many hungry, homeless veterans as he can to bring them into the hospital to 'STAND DOWN', so their needs can be assessed; clothing, food, housing, medical attention, hair-cuts, baths, encouraging those who WANT it into drug & alcohol treatment programs. I don't anymore, but I worked in the substance abuse program part-time for about 8 years. Oh, I do know the facts!

President Obama's doing the best that he can to save the nations' humanitarian programs or to oversee them as being hurt as less as possible, including veteran related programs! Why that's even one of the First Ladys' agendas! I can't remember who it was, but it was a GOP Senator or Representative who complained that VETERANS were a part of the reason why the nation was in this economical fix; complaining that they were sitting at home getting all of that money! OBAMA'S just the President not a dictator!

No Republican would say that thats more Liberal lowlife propaganda

Pete, my husband's a disabled veteran who's a Post Traumatic Stress Disorder patient. He attends PTSD meetings every FRIDAY at the VA hospital. He was also called those names when he got back home from Vietnam. When he went to work at the PO, even some of his own co-workers were afraid of him; called him crazy; baby-killer! Most African American soldiers and marines were treated like lepers when they got back home by their communities, families, employers, if they weren't too afraid to hire them! It is sad!

    August 30, 2011 at 9:00 pm |
  74. Liz Carter in Georgia

Yes a REPUBLICAN did say it too! Republicans have always been on board with support for the GI, the troop, and maybe his family; the soldiers, marines, airmen, and seamen who are in active duty. In essence, I mean the ones who're actually fighting, posted up, securing, training, etc., Republicans believe in funding them with any and everything they need! When they get out and come home, they're on their own! 'Pay'em for what'? 'They ain't fightin' no more'! They're no longer GIs; just veterans! It's SAD!

'Liberal lowlife propaganda'. Oh! So I guess you're in essence calling me a 'lowlife'. Well, that's fine too, but don't fool yourself. So that means you conservatives are throwing out 'highlife' propaganda, huh? We know that's all you care about! LOL! As far as your view of my status in the world, talk about blowing a horn and not knowing the facts, don't be to quick to throw that line out at anybody here again...!

@thrightthing; had he not said a word, made a comment or offered a 'Presidential' suggestion to take precautions, be prepared for the hurricaine, you and the rest of the 'things' would've been out in force screaming...'Where's the President on this...he hadn't said a word...he doesn't care about the American people'! 'He's so disconnected, inefficient, and selfish..all he cares about is his vacation'! The man's damned if he says anything and damned if he doesn't! That goes for everything he's tried to do!

I used to think America is the greatest country in the world, for the past three years that Obama has been the president of this country. I now know America better because white man hate the black man because he is black and the whole world see how the congress republicans treat Obama by disrespecting him. If few white people can treat him with racism, how do we feel the rest of the world see us. America belong to the Native Americans, white, black and other color are all immigrant no matter how we see it. If you love God you most love your neighbors no matter the color of his skin. We are all equal.
