Excerpts from tonight's Jobs Speech

We're about an hour away from hearing the president's speech before the joint session of Congress where he'll present his jobs plan. And the White House is giving us a sneak peek into what he'll say tonight.

On stopping "the political circus":

The people of this country work hard to meet their responsibilities.  The question tonight is whether we’ll meet ours.  The question is whether, in the face of an ongoing national crisis, we can stop the political circus and actually do something to help the economy; whether we can restore some of the fairness and security that has defined this nation since our beginning.

On working together to "make a difference":

Those of us here tonight cannot solve all of our nation’s woes.  Ultimately, our recovery will be driven not by Washington, but by our businesses and our workers.  But we can help.  We can make a difference.   There are steps we can take right now to improve people’s lives.

There is "nothing controversial" here:

I am sending this Congress a plan that you should pass right away.  It’s called the American Jobs Act.  There should be nothing controversial about this piece of legislation.  Everything in here is the kind of proposal that’s been supported by both Democrats and Republicans – including many who sit here tonight.  And everything in this bill will be paid for.  Everything.

What the American Jobs Act means:

The purpose of the American Jobs Act is simple:  to put more people back to work and more money in the pockets of those who are working.  It will create more jobs for construction workers, more jobs for teachers, more jobs for veterans, and more jobs for the long-term unemployed.  It will provide a tax break for companies who hire new workers, and it will cut payroll taxes in half for every working American and every small business.  It will provide a jolt to an economy that has stalled, and give companies confidence that if they invest and hire, there will be customers for their products and services.  You should pass this jobs plan right away.

And, if you pass it, you can find out what's in it ... sound familiar ???
After all ... you suckers fell for it last time.

AND, if you don't pass it now, you're against America ... last year, if you
disagreed with me, you would have been Racist ... but this year, if you
don't agree with me, you're against America !!!

Let's throw this lying snake out of the White House, and get a President
who doesn't play games with the American people.

It's like a bad horror move. "Son of Stimulus Plan: The Spending." Some movies are just not worth remaking (Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan)

Adults and children get in free, our children's children pay $450,000,000,000. Sorry, we are out of popcorn, it was used to make bio-fuel, however there is plenty of 'butter' from China to go around. I give this movie two "hell no"

why in the world would they give CNN an "excerpt" of the speech?

    September 8, 2011 at 6:12 pm |
    • fryin'fish

the press always gets copies of presidential speeches ahead of time...or at least excerpts. Not exactly sure why, but my guess is so they can be prepared to dissect the main points immediately after. So when they look really smart and like they have super-human listening and note-taking powers, it's really just because they cheated. Gotta keep that 24/7 news wheel spinning!

Does D stand for dumb? The speech is given out to the press before the president speaks. Get out of your parents' basement and learn something about the world.

Why wouldn't they? The President presumably wants the information to get out to the public, and CNN is a news outlet.

Go, Obama! We and almost everyone else we know are behind you. If the Repukes oppose these jobs proposals, they are going to look even more like the out-of-touch idiots they are. They can't keep screaming "Jobs!" and yet oppose plans that will give Americans more of them. Oh, wait - of course they can. But if they do, many of them will lose their own jobs in Nov. 2012.

    September 8, 2011 at 6:13 pm |
    • Repuke

Hey idiot donkey....how many of those BB King flipping jobs do you think we need? Because that's all Obama knows how to create!

Hey Repuke- don't be such a smart a$$. Not everyone is as fortunate as you, and most people would love a job flipping burgers at BK- or any job at all for that matter. This isn't all about you- its about the entire nation- which includes people you obviously think are scum. This is exactly what's wrong with our country- selfish people like you.

The job creations he proposed were all union jobs – oh, and funny how they showed the president of the union front and center right before the speech. Glad you can't see me- I may look like an idiot...

      September 8, 2011 at 10:59 pm |
    • Kim Young

Oh, that is so funny! Are you a comedian? All the job creations he proposed were union jobs! oh, and how ironic that the president of the unions was shown sitting front and center right before the speech. I am glad you can't see me, because I may look like an idiot, but..... This man should have been impeached a long time ago. He is the worst "president" ever. And no more finger pointing-he has had three years and done nothing but caused dissension! He is pompous and does not even look into the camera to speak directly to the public. He makes quick glances, I think he is afraid more people will see into his soul, or should I say lack there of. Nothing but lies an rhetoric.

Where has the President been for the last 3 years when everyone was loosing there jobs. The answer is, he was making speeches that had no substance, taking our country away from
    God and playing golf.

Pat, what does God have to do with jobs or goverance? I know some "Godly" people who are worse than awful people. I agree with your point that the uptake on jobs is a bit late here, but not too late. God won't get us out of this mess, if he/she exists. Only WE as AMERICANS can get ourselves out of this mess.

Really? "Taking our country away from God?" Is that truly your assessment of the situation at hand. Do you not know that in Him we all live, breath, and have our being? He neither dwells in buildings made of hands or in any singular country. It all exists because of Him. We are all striving to make things better and we all pay so that we ALL can experience the freedom and liberties we so richly enjoy. I won't go into a long dissertation but please, truly think before you type. Enough with plastering "God" over posts that truly and foundationally have nothing to do with Him.

    GOP's only solution to jobs.....Give Corporations more Tax Breaks so that they could pay their executives more bonuses plus higher salaries;
I guarantee you that despite the Tax Breaks there would be more worker layoffs and even more executive pay + bonuses. Greed has no end.

A couple months back it was none other than Bill Clinton saying that the US needed to reduce it's Corporate Tax rate in order to compete globally. Would he be a Demo-RAT or some other childish name? How about Obama wanting to keep the employee piece of the SS tax low? What name should we call him?

U can cut away all the taxes if u want, companies are not going to hire if there is no demand for their products. U can cut away all the taxes u want and companies arent going to hire badeducated or not educate workers.

U can cut all the taxes u want, and companies in need of good logistic are still not going to come to US.

Taxes are the least of all economic factors whch motivate a company to invest in a certain country.

People are so up in arms about the deficit, but economists of both sides will tell you that cutting gov't spending during a recession is playing with fire. Think about it, if we can stimulate the economy we will actually INCREASE the revenue that the gov't takes in, which is our best shot at reducing this deficit. It will pay off eventually.

    • Nicynic

Clown? Really. If you had any intelligence yourself you'd know that he's much smarter than you. But luckily for us, YOU aren't the one with any power. Unluckily for the President, the Corporate Party (used to be called Republican i think) has all the power and is driving it behind the clown faces of a little more than half of Congress. Because the Corporate party fights with all the power of this country behind them, we will never get what rationally is best for the greatest number. Stop lobbying and special interests funding and maybe you can get a Congress full of sincere people who actually want to represent the rest of us, not screw us over and trick us into letting them keep their jobs while the rest of us lose more everyday. What a fairytale....

Let's see....are you nuts!!!! Real soldiers true to the uniform and this country fighting overseas, understanding his inability to make a decidsion in a timely fashion that affeccted them, who does not respect military leadership and their advice, AND who has never served is not a soldiers president. At his South Carolina debate when he stated as Commander in Chief he would make decision not his military commander on the ground proved his arrogrance. When he failed to place his hand on his heart, he showed his colors, when he went to chicago to play golf his first Memorial Day and did not place the wreath in Arlington, he showed his distain. Hey Obama, It is not just the companies not hiring. People with the jobs are not getting the raises to keep up with the cost of living therefore hording the money they do have. Many people with the jobs are worse of than a year ago as well. The tax breaks you are giving these companies are not going to hire more people and are just going into the Board rooms pockets all while they make the current people with jobs do more and more work. Could the loophole be firing your companies current staff and hiring new works for less pay? Congrats, mission accomplished. How about you start putting money into the community like creating more public transportation and rebuilding America so we can get off fossil fuels? Building a strong infrustucture so when the unthinkable happens (America gets Attacked again by some lunatics) we are prepared. When Roosevelt faced the depression he built the national park service to boost the economy. How about hiring more workers at our boarders? How about instead of standing in front of trucks telling us they will get 56 miles to the gallon in 2021 that you tell us that we will be off gas completely. This country needs strong leadership and explaining to us exactly what is going on. Not just standing at a podium looking weak because congress wont sign a bill. Call these people out and lock them in a room until a deal can be made. Do something!

I want to believe the president. I want this country to prosper again. But talk is cheap. And it has been 3 years and here he is with a jobs plan, that may or may not work. I can't vote for him again if all he does is make speeches and gets no results.

Free trade with Panama? How did NAFTA work out with Mexico. That's where my previous job went. We need more import tariffs.

GREAT SPEECH! And now I need to go read this bill and see what is in it before I say any more.

He talks about meeting responsibilities but keeps running up the debt. Is he a hypocrite or just dumb? It's time for a good President. Obama needs to go and make way for someone who will fix the problems that America faces, instead of making things worse, which has been Obama's legacy.

Wonderful speech! Tried to bring the parties together, but wasn't soft! If the Republicans would quit worrying about 14 months from now and focus on their jobs, the bill (s) would pass. President Obama reminded me why I voted for him tonight. * Loved his comment about seeing others globally drive our vehicles! Made in America....wonderful- just wonderful! Very proud to be a Democrat right now. Go Obama. I hope he does travel the entire country and I hope he "calls out" every Republican, Tea Partier and every other politician who works against him! Go Obama!

Just what everyone expected – the SOS. Nothing new here. Asking for more money when Obama's Inspector General just put out a report showing they states have not spent $800 million of the last stimus money they were given.

Time for a change. Too bad the election isn't this November – so we could really work on a program to get people back to work.

This was a campaign speech aimed at influencing votes in 2012 among those who know absolutely nothing about economics, job creation or running a business. It scares me that these people elected a man of no experience. Obama never said where the $450B was coming from. At what point will the press start reporting on other socialist countries in crisis and report to the people of this copuntry that nowhere else does 50% of its citizens get a free ride. Obama was way off the mark stating that we have personal responsibility. It is also appaling that CNN allows such hate to be posted. There will never be civil discourse with the division created by this administration.

I'd say you are a troll, except for your near-illiteracy. Perhaps you should either give 3rd Grade another shot, or just stop watching Fox News.

Just tried to contact my Representative [Darrel Issa- R, CA] everytime I tried to e-mail him my expectation that he support [without change] President Obama's Job Initiative- the "registering" info did not allow me to do so. Each time, it was claimed that I hadn't filled out a category [I HAD completed every box- every time]. Similar BS from the GOP'ers as happened when supporters of the President crashed the Congressional servers, during the Debt Ceiling nonsense.

I listened to the president tonight. Ar first I was skeptical, thinking it would be the same ole, same ole. I was surprised. The president should have given this speech a year ago. As a Republican, I liked the speech ;it rang true and is to the point. We need to do something about our economy, and we need to do something now. Congress should pass this jobs bill with some exceptions. There should be compromise on both sides of the aisle; give and take, but pass it.

I have NEVER posted profane, uncivil, or inappropriate comments on this forum.
It seems to have started after I complained that a poster [HSThompson] used extremely lewd language in a reply to my post
How un-American. Why is this happening ?

  34. Congress needs to get back to work

Congress controls the purse strings, it is not enough for them to argue amongst themselves, people want to see action on the real issue, unemployment. This is not just the presidents problem, this is the problem of those in congress that have consistently refused to do anything to put people back to work. The quickest way to cut the national debt is to create more jobs. Let me spell it out for all those with a debt fetish in congress. More people with jobs = more taxable revenue = less debt = a stronger America.

Why can't liberals get it? Taxes and government spending take money from the productive (business owners and professionals) and give it to the unproductive (bureaucrats and political cronies). The money that would have been spent and invested would have created real (that is productive) jobs. But instead, real jobs are replaced by pork barrel projects and handouts. Liberals say they want to redistribute the wealth to help the needy. I want to help the needy too. ITS CALLED A REAL JOB! And as far as green energy goes, why don't private investors come up with the money? Maybe because they know it’s a boondoggle and pipe dream. If liberals think green energy is so great, invest YOUR OWN MONEY. But of course, liberals are only generous and idealistic when the spend OTHER PEOPLES MONEY. What a bunch of hypocrites

I believe that one of the biggest problems in America (and, in fact, the world – at least, in regard to Internet communication) is that people are sarcastic, rude and obnoxious. Do you really expect politicians, who actually make up the same society we all live in, not to be different than the people, say, who are posting here and displaying their horrible, troll-like comments? What ever happened to the Golden Rule? What ever happened to 'If you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say it at all." After all, you get what you give. If people believe they can act irresponsibly in their communication and actions and that others will act responsibly in return, they are sadly mistaken. Don't allow fools and those who are trigger-happy be the ones you learn from and emulate. Set the example you would like to see others follow. Sure, it won't change in a day, but neither did society turn from the friendly, supportive place it used to be into what it has devolved into now...in a short time. If you want change, you must lead by example. If you are not doing so, you are part of the problem, not the solution.

The @mominpa on this blog needs to think before he or she posts a comment! Don't for one minute think that you're the only one who's of a military background and family inclusion! My BLACK father was yanked up by this same system of a federal government to fight people who hadn't done a thing to him in WW2, as were all my uncles and a a few 2nd and 3rd cousins! My husband was a UNITED STATES MARINE; who was part of the 'farce' set up as the VIETNAM WAR! So don't even go there now! Oh! It's all PATRIOTISM!

@mominpa; 'Let's drop the BUSH taxcuts for everyone?!? Oh, they won't be dropped for 'everyone', but for the unemployed, so they will in turn be responsible for their 'fair share of taxes' to the nation! Maybe they will be obliged to open up realtime jobs to Americans. The 'cuts' didn't help the loss of AMERICAN jobs!...That was a 'provened' waaay before BUSH left! So what in the world are you talking about? 'for everybody'? Some of us have worked, retired with pensions and still paying our share of taxes!

We need jobs and what the President laid out last night was what had been agreed upon before with the GOP and Dems so if it doesnt pass blame Congress. If Congress truly wants to create jobs they will pass The American Job Bill. The President will cut spending in other programs to pay for this and in fact cut spending by more than what the bill will take to pay for this. Otherwise there will be more people laid off and its worth a chance to get America's jobs.

Insenuations are sometimes all it takes to 'SET IT OFF' up in here, so be careful what you 'insenuate' for..you just might get it! I think myself that we have more machinery of government than is necessary, too many parasites living on the labor of the industrious.

The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.

he beauty of the Second Amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it.

Dean, forgive me for assuming. I know that had to be embarrassing...'REPUBLICAN'! In this day and time? I don't blame you for making that clear. I would've done the same thing. However, do you know how much this President has been threatened? People on this blog have literally threatened his life; some blatantly, some subtly, but when guns are mentioned, I immediately jump to defend him, simply because I remember that this GREAT AMERICA has a RICH history of 'Presidential' GUN 'cross-hairs' assassinations.

You hang it Joe! I never even indicated that I was against the Second Amendment. Thomas Jefferson said what? You figured It out to be...'it won't be needed unless they try to take it'. Well who is 'they' and unless 'they take what? OBAMA is as smart if not smarter than any other President this country has ever elected. BTW, I can't even say 'black or white'! He's certainly smarter than you Joe! You're just a lowlife conservative conspirator, against any color other than white as president! You're a biggot.

We found another 'smart black man'! You and the rest of your envious, beligerent hateful ilk can't stand it! All you clowns do is sit up and repeat the same old lies about the President trying to discredit, denounce, and pick apart all of the mans' lifes accomplishments, SO FAR! He's done more in his life than most of you stupid, illiterate teaparty blogger-cites; you just can't stand the very idea of an intelligent black mind and will go to any lengths to discount and dismiss it to ignorance and idiocy!

Barack Obama isn't the first 'smart black man' that hit the world stage. Your 'white supremacist system' and your faulty use of the 'Second Amendment' found it's way to take them out! Historically, you have done that, and you all are doing it now against this President through you 'word power' and propagandist claims against him. It's just more of a modern-day lynching! A staged lynching right on and for myself, I'm not taking it layin down. I'm going to at least point to the 'noose' and the assassinators!
