Obama designates Ft. Monroe as national monument

President Obama on Tuesday formally designated Ft. Monroe a national monument. The Hampton Roads, Virginia military base had closed in September. The White House says this new designation will create 3,000 new jobs and stimulate the local economy.

“During the Civil War, Fort Monroe stood as a foremost Union outpost in the midst of the Confederacy and remained under Union Army control during the entire conflict,” the official proclamation notes.
