'Welcome home,' Obama tells troops from Iraq

(CNN) - President Barack Obama on Wednesday welcomed home returning troops from Iraq, hailing their service to help a people they didn't know as an example of what makes America great.

"As your commander in chief, and on behalf of a grateful nation, I'm proud to finally say these two words, and I know your families agree - welcome home. Welcome home," Obama told cheering troops at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

"Welcome home," he repeated again, to enthusiastic applause. "Welcome home."

The U.S. military mission that began in 2003 is ending this month, and Obama used the speech to mark the fulfillment of a campaign pledge he made in 2008 to end the war.

Noting the almost 4,500 Americans killed and more than 30,000 injured, Obama spoke of the heavy sacrifice and hard work in the Iraq mission.

"Because of you - because you sacrificed so much for a people that you had never met, Iraqis have a chance to forge their own destiny," Obama said. "That's part of what makes us special as Americans. Unlike the empires of old, we did so not for territory or for resources. We do it because it's right.

"There can be no fuller expression of America's support for self-determination than our leaving Iraq to its people. That says something about who we are."

ha! and what exactly will these soldiers "returning home" be doing once they get states side? Become cops? Return to Iraq as govt. contractors...in other words, continue to become civil servants and not add a single penny in tax revenues?

that my friends, is a leech.

Well, Baracky has managed to send most jobs overseas and will not make any new ones at home...except through the issue of tax credits and food stamps??

There is a pipeline just dying to go to Texas via Canada, but the zebra in the whitehouse will not have any of it, despite of most of his green energy wet dreams crashing down like a deck of cards..he still has to play the environmental and homosexual/gay card...if he expects to be re-electable..sad.

What a laughable joke this war has been and a terrible tragedy for those chumps who went over there to supposedly "protect our freedoms" or "fight terrorism"..

The only real terrorist that most americans will encounter is an overzealous TSA goon at the local airport, brought to you not by Bin Laden, but by Bush, Hussein Obama and cronys.

    Ha!

The last time I checked cops pay taxes, and the last time I checked civil service pay taxes.
You need to lay off that poisoned tea you have been swilling.
Thankfully the president has more brains than you, and understands that pipeline could possibly do more harm to our environment than the sorry number of actual jobs it might create...FYI the Canadians' Keystone oil will not help our oil situation, since that oil once refined will be shipped from the gulf to overseas markets like China.
Those "chumps who went over there" as you so crudely put it are heroes,....you however are a blithering fool.

Do you believe everything Lindsay Graham says? President Obama fights a different war, one that costs way less and no human lives. He knows what he needs and what he doesn't.

"Also, I have no idea of how big a factor the Bradley eeffct will be, but feel it HAS to be there"I'm wondering if the potential for the Bradley eeffct is allowing pollsters more latitude than the norm. Pollsters are restrained by the election results; if they're widely off they become less relevant in future elections (like Zogby). In this election pollsters can be wildly off and blame it on the Bradley eeffct without the same risk of negative repercussions.

I want to address The programs Obama is putting into place to "Hire a Vet". It can't be any vet though. It cant be for a Veteran that served his country by force (draft), or for a Vet that served from post Vietnam through 9/11. No these programs are set up for those that Voluntarily joined the service and Voluntarily Quits the military.
I say, RE-ENLIST!! IT'S A JOB !!, so those of us that lost work by no fault of our own can get the job Obama wants to give to you.
    Oh, I am a 12 year vet that...opps, sorry, just don't qualify.

      @Micheal,

What's the problem? If you are listening to the GOP / Tea Troll candidates, they say "don't blame wall street blame yourself" Have you tried taking a bath prior to the interview?

I think what you are missing is, this president it trying desperately to get jobs created in this country. Maybe you've been asleep, but that's one thing the Republicans are working hard to stop.

So place you complaints appropriately...not at this White House

Maryi think race matters but not as much as the siamlirity of the culture and traditions of the couple. Interrcial marriages take a lot of hard work but as long as there is love and understanding the couple should be fine. Some cultures are more similar than others, eg I live in America but come from an African background and i noticed that our culture and traditions have a lot of similiarity with the Latino culture than other cultures. This could be because of the influence of the blacks in South America, therefore i will not mind marrying a latino. I was recently in South Western part of Mexico and I was amazed at how i felt at home. The people have a darker skin tone, the food very similar to west african food especially the tamale and soups! i was amazed! Their mannerisms, their houses, the way they joke around and how hard they work! I was truly impressed.I think it's going to be easier for me to have a successful marriage with someone from this background than others no matter the color of their skin. Eg although i am black, it's going to take a lot more work to marry a black british than for me to marry someone from Latin America because of the wider cultural difference. I love to sometimes infuse jokes into serious issues and the Mexicans that i met did that i lot. It made me miss my home so much! In essence, i think the success of the marriage has more to do with culture and traditions than color. Most interracial marriages need hard work but who cares if you look green or blue, as long as the couple love, respect each other and are prepared to go through thick and thin together they should be fine

"As I wrote, it pains me to say it but I'm also not going to be one of these "last men standing" in dinael at what's coming."ARE YOU GOING TO VOTE?I don't give a damn about what appears to be coming, but totally giving up and not even bothering to vote is absolutely the best way to guaranteeing that it comes. If the damned polls say 90-10 for Obama on election day, I am STILL going to vote anyway.(And don't forget; some of those kids Obama's counting on have just about the lousiest record of actually showing up at the polls and voting.)

Mercenaries, they do not fight for freedom, they fight for money. Within the us there is an Island whose people die for the US President and they are not allowed to vote for him. Now that is Hypocrisy!
