First Lady donates to Toys for Tots

Washington (CNN) - First Lady Michelle Obama delivered 805 toys donated by the White House Executive Office staff to the Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots Campaign during a visit to the Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling on Friday.  The donations are part of a national campaign to collect over 17 million toys for children in need across the country.

Mrs. Obama, speaking in a warehouse where gifts were being collected and sorted, thanked members of the military and volunteers for their efforts.

“It is so impressive that given all military families have to do anyway, that on top of what they do, they're doing this as well,” said the First Lady. “It’s a very powerful example of just how valuable and just how constant our military families - how selfless they are.”

The First Lady told the group that her teenage daughter Malia asked about the origin of the Toys for Toys program.  Mrs. Obama told her the story of the Marine Corps wife who was looking to donate a toy but couldn’t find a place to contribute.  Her search led to the creation of a national organization in 1947 that has collected and distributed toys each holiday season.

Mrs. Obama encouraged Americans to continue donating up until the Christmas Eve deadline.  After her remarks the First Lady helped sort gifts which will be distributed from a local hospital to targeted areas around the District of Columbia.

I'll bet $10K that the Obama haters will find something negative to say about this. Expect negative, cynical and sarcastic smears in the style of Laura Ingram who shamelessly hates Michelle Obama with a passion.

Grown ups know how to separate politics from a story like this! This is a great gesture!

You should read the negative comments about the First family and their newest family picture. We won't even discuss the comments made about all the members of the family including the children and the First Lady's mother just because they are going on a family vacation to Hawaii. I for one am sick to death of listening to hateful, prejudiced people always trying to turn everything the Obama's do into something negative. I just felt the need to get this off my chest.

        Catmom,

This same hatred was extended to Bush and his family as well I am not a liberal and I did not vote for Obama but the hatred for him as his family is shameful. It is one thing to debate and disagree with him on policy and it is a different animal to spew hatred. That is why I said GROWNUPS can separate this gesture from politics. Many other Presidents have donated to Toys for Tots! There is NOTHING political about this kind act.

Why is that jean, is it because I disagree with the Marine asking the first lady to the ball? You don't like to be challenged do you? The liberal MO is when challenged, don't answer, just call names! That is not grown up! With all due respect!
So I am a twisted racist moron, just because you said i am ?

        I am not that fragile

Totally. Let's put our differences aside and support the good deeds across our country. I would love to see more positive stories in the media!

The First Lady did not deliver these gifts on her own. This article makes it sound like she did all the giving – what about all the other people across the U.S. who have given to this organization. I do not see their names in print.

The 805 toys delivered were donated by the White House Executive Office staffers;.as stated in the first sentence of the above article. Credit was given for their donation with a lot of praise from the First Lady for all the members of the Marine Corps does to help military and other needy families.

No where does it state she was the only donor. Which makes me wonder, are you someone who only reads what you want to read into things, or see what you want to see?

You are now chastising someone for doing the very same thing you did to me in the Marine Ball article!

This is a where freedom of speech is very closely held. I would not necessarily agree with the ideology of these Tea Trolls constantly bashing your president, but I would defend their rights to voice their opinions.

The major problem I am having these days is; It is getting INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT to READ COMPLETELY ASSININE COMMENTS FROM THE world's most REPUGNANT FOOLS.....But tagain hey have their rights...just like monkeys throwing poo at your family during a visit to the zoo. Its embarassing, nasty and stinks to high heaven

I applaud the First Lady's focus on children – their health and education and our many woefully neglected military families! These were simple things that we should have been prioritizing two decades ago – not after we are stricken by a generation set back by poor foods and access to education.
