The Obamas' low key Hawaiian vacation As his Republican rivals criss-cross a chillyIowa landscape this week, President Obama is in vacation mode –spending time with his family including hiking, golfing with friends and visiting troops in his native Hawaii. But he is keeping a noticeably low profile. The White House reminds this is a working vacation as the president each day receives his daily briefing and advisors follow domestic and world developments. The administration is also presumably preparing the president's State of the Union address to Congress which is set for January 24th. The president's holiday vacation was delayed just days before Christmas in his last interaction with Congress when House Republicans "blinked" and voted to extend the payroll tax cut another two months ending a stalemate with the White House. But we are seeing very few photo opportunities of the president enjoying the balmy Hawaiian breezes. Monday the TV travel pool followed the commander-in-chief to the Marine Corps base at Kaneohe Bay as the president headed to the gym for a workout. No pics were allowed as the pool was held in a nearby McDonalds. Later the president, First Lady Michelle Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia, along with un-named friends went on a hike in Oahu at the Lanikai World War II "pillboxes" which are actually abandoned bunkers. TripAdvisor, an internet travel review website describes the hike as not-to-be-missed with "spectacular" views of the many beaches in the area. But reporters following the president wouldn't be privy to those spectacular views or opportunities to see the hikers since the travel pool of reporters were "held" at a nearby park. The pictures TV viewers did see this week was of the president and first lady greeting troops and their families at a local Marine base on the island on Christmas Day. But what made the video go viral was the baby in the photo op. As the president posed with Marine Captain Greg Wagner and his wife Meredith, 8 month old Cooper Wall Wagner squirmed in the president's arms then put his entire right hand into the presidential mouth. A laughing Obama kept smiling. Kissing babies is a mainstay on the campaign trail but it's rare to get this close to the president of theUnited States. The Obama's will spend the rest of this week in Hawaii returning to Washington after the New Year. |

2) In the past we have raised the debt ceiling without protest. Why??? Because raising the ceiling allows Congress to pay the Debts already previously accumulated and authorized by congress to pay...Right???? Congress holds the purse string right???? So how come, for the very 1st time, we are making it a big deal for Obama? Is it because he's black? These are Congresses bills – Right? They are not Obama's bills, because congress controls the purse strings – Right???

Do you know how many round trips Air Force one made with a security detail to the Simi Valley Ranch in California under Reagan? He spend 349 days total time at the ranch over a period of many vacations. This does not include time spent at Camp David.
Do you know how many round trips Air Force one made with a security detail to Crawford, Texas and Kennebunkport, Maine? The Bush Family spent 490 days in Crawford, 487 days at Camp David, and 43 days in Kennebunkport, Maine over the period of the 8 years W. was in office.
I doubt if either of those families walked round trip to each destination, and I imagine they had a security detail.

the security at ranches for President Regan and Bush were in place...when the president changes locations(as obama does) there is a lot of expense and also risk to security personnel. Obama continually put security personal and even private people at risk with his behavior...also, obama comes from Ill but does not have a home there and I don't like that, to me he is a carpet bagger as is the clintons. I believe if you have a home you have roots and a vested interest in your community and country. These carpetbaggers are power mongers and nothing else..there every effort is to gain more power for themselves....I would like to see dedicated Americans running the country not these career politicians.

The Obamas, I assume, refers to the family, and not just to the president. And yet the possessive here is singular rather than plural. The title should read: "The Obamas' Low-Key Hawaiian Vacation." It is the vacation of the Obamas, not the Obama! Petty? Trivial? No, it is our beloved English language being slaughtered here. It is from poor usage and comprehension that misunderstandings arise. Aside from that, many have stated "facts" that are merely suppositions and sometimes outright prejudicial viewpoints. President Obama is probably one of the finest presidents of our time, and we are fortunate to have someone as intelligent, hardworking, and committed to getting things done. And he has gotten amazing things done, particularly considering the laziest and stupidest Congress in ages. At the same time, it is difficult to think of any president in recent times who has been so unfairly maligned, misrepresented, and verbally abused. Worst case, let them complete the remainder of their contract and early retire them so they can receive the benefits they earned. This is NOT HOW WE SUPPORT OUR TROOPS!
