High octane fundraising events in the Big Apple

President Barack Obama is set to highlight his energy vision during a speech at Nashua Community College in New Hampshire on Thursday. It's a whirlwind visit to the college. In fact the president will only be on the ground in New Hampshire fewer than 3 hours.

Soon thereafter he heads to the Big Apple for the real focus of his trip – fundraising. Like his other recent forays outside of Washington, DC, the president’s "message" event in New Hampshire will be but a prelude to some heavy duty fundraising efforts.

Even as he continues to posture himself as the champion for the middle class, the president will be hob-nobbing with celebrities and industry leaders including big wigs from Wall Street and hedge funds. A Democratic campaign official tells CNN Ralph Schlosstein, president and CEO of Evercore Partners, the big Wall Street investment firm is in fact a host of Thursday's dinner in Manhatten that itself will net the campaign and party at least 2.8 million dollars. In total, the evening's events in New York City will further fill the president's campaign war chest and that of the Democratic National Committee by adding about five and a half million dollars. Two days after a student walked into Chardon High School and started shooting at his fellow classmates, President Obama called CHS Principal Andy Fetchik on Wednesday afternoon to express his condolences. Three teenagers have died as a result of the incident and two others were injured. CNN's justice team has the latest details on the story.

Here’s a readout of the president’s call with Principal Fetchik from a White House official:

Earlier today, President Obama called Andy Fetchik, Principal of Chardon High School in Chardon, Ohio, to express his condolences following the shooting that took place Monday morning.  The President told Principal Fetchik that he was heartbroken by the shooting and asked how the Principal and the school community were holding up during these difficult days.  The President told Principal Fetchik that he and the First Lady are keeping the entire Chardon High School community in their thoughts and prayers.

DNC defends Obama on Israel ahead of AIPAC

Washington (CNN) – This may be a first. Ahead of the AIPAC meeting in Washington this weekend, the Democratic National Committee is pre-butting any Republican attacks on the President's position on Israel.

They're doing so by sending the Jewish press, activists and the general media a video featuring Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying in May of 2011, "President Obama spoke about his ironclad commitment to Israel's security. He rightly said that our security cooperation is unprecedented and he has backed those words with deeds."

It would seem the video is intended to buffer the President from Republican accusations that his policy on Iran has been too weak. In the course of the campaign Mitt Romney has said that if the President is re-elected Iran will have a nuclear bomb and Rick Santorum accused the President of actively allowing Iran to get a nuclear weapon.

In a statement DNC Communications Director Brad Woodhouse claims "never have more Republicans been as nakedly political about the US-Israeli relationship and not surprisingly they are deliberately lying about the President's record for nothing than more than pure politics." He calls it "reprehensible" and adds "it's going to backfire."

White House dinner tribute to Iraq vets

Two hundred people are expected to attend the Wednesday night gala at the White House, including former Marine Eric Alva who in 2003 became the first service member wounded in the Iraq war.  This won't be Alva's first trip to the White House.  He also attended the president's signing ceremony of  the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" in December 2010.

Other highly decorated Iraq veterans will also be honored.

Army Col. Peter Newell served two tours and was awarded Silver and Bronze Stars, a Joint Service Achievement Medal and Presidential Unit Citation.

Army Sgt. 1st Class Sebastian Ellis was awarded a Bronze star with Valor and Army Commendation Medal with Valor in his three tours of duty.

And Chief Warrant Officer 4 Nelson Visaya received the Distinguish Flying Cross and Air Medal with Valor awards during his two tours.
