First lady talks faith and food on BET

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Headlining Black Entertainment Television's Sunday morning line-up was first lady Michelle Obama on the network's popular program, "Lift Every Voice."

Replete with high-energy inspirational sermons and gospel music, BET programming crescendoed into a half-hour special, catching up with the first lady while she was on tour promoting the second anniversary of her "Let's Move" health campaign.

"For so many of us, food is more than just nourishment to our bodies, it's how we knit our families and our communities together," Obama said as she addressed an audience on her nationwide tour.

And, particularly true in the African-American community, faith and food go together; Sunday worship is often followed by feasting.

"How many of us find ourselves looking forward to that fried chicken, mac and cheese, pound cake after church on Sunday," said Obama. "Some people come to church just for the fried chicken," she added in jest.

While appealing to the crowd's sense of humor, Obama did not make light of the serious nature of obesity and lifestyle-induced disease that has reached epidemic proportions according to many studies.

And, she acknowledged the politically charged criticism her initiative first received, turning it into a partisan issue early on.

"I think we've seen a really whole-scale change in the discussion," said Obama to host Cory Condrey, "When we first launched 'Let's Move' a year ago, there was some debate in certain areas whether childhood obesity was a problem at all."

Two years since Obama set out to make health and nutrition her platform, she is touting what she sees as its greatest successes.

"We've seen the conversation change; we've really seen over these two years the nation coming together big and small to really tackle this problem," said Obama. She added that unexpected partnerships have arisen reaching a large swath of the American population: "...Wal-Mart stepping up and making changes to the formulation of their products, Darden –which is the largest restaurant chain in the world - is changing their kids' menus, making fruits and vegetables the first option."

It isn't uncommon for first ladies to profess their faith, acknowledging a religious connection between the president, the White House and the American people.

"There is an unspoken energy that comes from the millions of people who are lifting us up in prayer," Obama said.

When asked what words of inspiration she had on a Sunday morning, Obama said, "One thing that I have learned, that in order to be the best wife and mother I can be, I have to be at my peak of health - mental and physical - and that investment is worth it."

Further reinforcing the connection between healthy habits and setting good examples, she said, "We can't fool ourselves into thinking we can be good servants of God, good parents if we're not whole inside."

There are people in our society who just love to pick on others and I'm ashamed that our presidents wife has to be one of them... She gives every appearance of being a charming, funny lady that it would be fun to know. Most first ladys have stayed so hidden that we never had an idea of what they were really like, so I find it refreshing to have one who is so open and seems to roll beautifully with the punches. She has a great deal of dignity when needed but seems to also have fun. MORE POWER TO HER!!!

I think it says more about how the press loved the Obama's. Bush's wife did just as much. for womens health, childrens issues, etc, but either by choice or because the press has an agenda – past presidents wifes didn't get the exposure like MO does.
It is very telling (CNN) that we have an article like this and nothing on other stories from this past weekend. How about a story on the Volt or...

Solyndra, the solar panel company whose highly publicized failure and consequent investigation by federal authorities has flashed across headlines recently, isn't the only business to go belly up after benefiting from a piece of the $800 billion economic stimulus package passed in 2009.

At least four other companies have received stimulus funding only to later file for bankruptcy, and two of those were working on alternative energy. Evergreen Solar Inc., $5.3 million, SpectraWatt, $500,000, Mountain Plaza Inc., got $424,000 (despite claiming bankruptcy in 2003) and Olsen Mills Acquisition Co. also failed despite Olsen's Mills receiving $10 million to increase employment, add equipment and machinery, refinance existing debts and work capital for operations and acquire land. The payout - part of a $64 million package to nine rural businesses in Wisconsin for economic development loan assistance - was delivered in January 2010, after Olsen's Mills filed for bankruptcy protection for defaulting on a $60 million bank loan.

Another FLUFF piece on Michele by the mainstream media ... with a response of ooohs and aaahs from her predictable adoring fans. But, where are the stories about how Michele and Barack attended Wright's anti-American, racist, church, for TWENTY YEARS !!! Amazing how the truth can be so easily buried ... and, amazing how people will fall for the manufactured illusion, when the White House public relations department tries to put lipstick on a pig.

Michelle on BET. Isn't that the name for the comedy channel? I can't remember anymore since I can't afford cable tv anymore. I lost my job when it became apparent to my employer that Obama was going to win the election.

As far as Michelle's program to end childhood obesity? Well, I guess that it is true when people say that the poison is good for the people that are ruled but not for the rulers.

"Let them eat cake" (some of you may have to look this one up to understand the significance)

Hi sickofit , if your employer fired you and others just because he thought Obama was going to win the election it doesnt say much for his business skills . making decisions on what he thought Obama was going to do , not what he did. Was the business making a proit or already running a loss when this happened , Also im sure your busimess owner is still comfortably off , and not on a street corner homeless

        March 5, 2012 at 2:33 am |
      • jean2009

Dear sickofit....It is not President and Mrs. Obama's fault your previous employer was an idiot.
Why do I feel there is more to the story than just that?

        March 5, 2012 at 8:05 pm |
      • sickofitinca

Greg and jean, yes my former employer is not on the street and is quite comfortable in his nice warm expensive home. I hold no animosity for him or the company. This is the business cycle. He saw the new regulations that was going to impact his business and saw the need to cut back so he could weather the coming storm. He has a good business acumen and his company survived the downturn nicely. he has about 1/2 the employees that he had right now and we communicate regularly.

The California construction companies that chose not to cut or prepare for the downturn are now out of business and that will bode well for those that remain after we replace the current president and get some of the regulations repealed and put the country back on a sound financial footing.

Never in the history of any of our pass president has Jerry's particular hate has been so pronounced....My question. Why do Racist always deny they are Racist. Stand up and be counted, cowards.

Hey Jerry – Remember me? You accused me of calling you a racist when I said you hated President Obama. Looks like others here ARE actually calling you a RACIST – what do you have to say to them? At any rate, your hatred is over the top as no matter what the subject matter is you slam either the POTUS or FLOTUS.

I so love Mrs. Obama. She is head and shoulders above any first lady before her. She has taken a stand to tackle the problem of childhood obesity, a whole family problem and give it a community solution. I would be honored to meet you one day.

Yes head and shoulders is right, and 100lbs heavier, and way better at being a racist, and the best at spending public money on more vacations in three years than most Americans take in a lifetime.

I am upset that this new drug is so expensive. If we take all emiootn out of it and simply look at the numbers, wouldn't it just be cheaper to give the drug than to have to pay for all the hospital costs associated with premature babies? It must cost insurance companies tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands per premature birth, and if this drug would stop or cut down on premature births just think of the money the insurance companies would save!I understand that it is new, and sometimes new things cost more, but that is just a ridiculous price! I am currently at 19 weeks but have had no previous miscarriages or premature births so I'm thankful that I don't have to take this drug (this time around at least). It kind of seems like one would have to make the choice between their wallet and their baby, and that's not fair. Of course I'd choose my baby if I could, but it would be really sad if someone's baby died because the parents simply couldn't afford this medication.

Ignorance of history is no excuse. First ladies over the last 50 years have made children their focus.

Laura Bush – early childhood eductation
      Hillary Clinton – SCHIP
Barbara Bush – Mrs. Bush's Story Time
Nancy Reagan – Just Say No
Rosalyn Carter – refugee children of Cambodia and Laos
      Pat Nixon – handicapped children
Lady Bird Johnson – Head Start.

I tend to agree with those who suggest your opposition and disaprobation of the President and First Lady are racist in origin. And you are truly ignorant.

        @Schlongtavia Castro,

First this is not correct. Laura Bush had a career in childhood education.
Secondly, heart and conviction often is more than enough to support issues. You can always find expertise in others for support!

Actually you could start with Eleanor Roosevelt whose project was a National Policy for benefiting youth, blacks, poor and women, promoting the WWII Victory Gardens, and the United Nations.
Jacqueline Kennedy with refurbishing the White House, promoting the arts and humanities, U.S. Historic preservation of urban areas, and saving places like D.C.'s Lafayette Square and putting it on the National Historic Registry. It is for no other reason they named The John F. Kennedy Center for the Preforming Arts?
Besides Head Start, Lady Bird Johnson's other project was taking on the urban blight of billboards and promoting roadside beautification with wildflower plantings.
Betty Ford – Equal Rights Amendment and Breast Cancer Awareness
        Rosalyn Carter – Mental Health
        Pat Nixon – Volunteerism
Promoting good health and healthy eating habits for children in an age of overweight children is a good move. Get them outdoors and moving.

Out of one side of the mouth, talk about healthy eating and child obesity. The other side of the mouth, promotes Michael Taylor, former head of Monsanto, to the FDA. Genetic Modified Food has not been fully tested. Yet it has been introduced into the food supply. There are health issues, which are beginning to show up in people and especially children. Search it out for yourself.

It's been so refreshing to have such an active and caring First Lady. There have been others that have contributed positively to the country of course, and this FLOTUS can certainly stand with that group. She and the POTUS are trying to promote a healthier nation which, in turn, lowers medical costs, which, in turn, helps every one of us. Let's be thankful that they see the whole picture!

people keepbsaying they went to church run by the reverand Wright. So what? how many of you good catholics went to church run by a pedophile? Is this how we judge people by the church they went to. Talked to one gal that went to the rev wrights church and said she never heard him express radical views. Probaly none or your priest where leering at kids during worship either. Grow up theres enough hate going around without speculating what might go on.

Really, no one should judge anyone's faith or religion. Who cares what church they attended and attends, NO ONE'S BUSINESS PERIOD. GET OVER THIS FAITH/CHURCH BS. NO ONE SHOULD CRITICIZE ANY CHURCH AS GOOD CHRISTIANS SHOULD NOT JUDGE (HYPROCITS).

We are refinancing the house, and thuoght, why don't we take out 25k or so (or whatever the max is) and make some interest on it? Thing is, we plan to move, sell, and (most importantly) buy another place in just over a year. So we have to be able to retrieve our money and interest at that time. What are our options? I have heard of CDs and money market accounts; it looks like if we went with one of those, we'd earn around 5%. That's only like a thousand dollars profit. Aside from upgrades to the home, are there other options that are more profitable? (I need guaranteed options; we can't gamble with this money). Thank you for your time and expertise! Please be detailed in your answers if you don't mind, as I have no idea what I am doing!Okay, for those of you who just don't get it, please stop reading between the lines and going off into la-la land with your advice. We are not refinancing for this purpose. As I stated, we are already refinancing (for another reason) and with that comes the opportunity to pull out cash. We don't want to put it back into our home. What we do want is to somehow invest said cash for one year in order to build interest. Why is that a bad idea? (If you still think it is, please explain why.)Thank you!
