Michelle Obama takes campaign message to Arizona

(CNN) - Michelle Obama waxed optimistic about the policies instituted by her husband and his political future during a Monday evening campaign stop in Arizona, a state that looks increasingly competitive in the upcoming general election.

The first lady highlighted what she called the achievements in the president's first term, including the start of an economic turnaround, health care reform, equal pay legislation and the killing of Osama bin Laden, while appearing before hundreds of supporters in Tucson.

The Arizona stop is one in a series of campaign stops in likely 2012 western battleground states. Democratic representatives have appeared increasingly optimistic about the president's chances of winning the state that he lost by over eight percentage points in the 2008 election.

Discussing Obama's chances of winning the Grand Canyon State in November at the beginning of her remarks, Michelle Obama said "I know we are going to do it because of people like you."

She also gave a shout out to Ron Barber, the Democrat running in the June 12 special election to fill the 8th District seat left vacant by former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, whose mother attended the Obama event on Monday.

    Guess she has to do this because she thinks hubbys working

      For all your talking, where do you think the country would be if 'hubby' wasn't working? Sounds like a true republican these days, Those who can't see the rose for the thorns. What is more problematic is that republicans are the ones who caused the thorns.

      • Steveo

        The GOP caused the thorns? Both parties caused the thorns! In example, the World Trade Center attacks in 1993 (under clinton) led to the attack in 2001! USS Cole was attacked under a Dem president, US embassies were attacked under a DEM president, dot.com bubble busted under a Dem president, housing bubble blew up under a Dem president, we conducted an air war over Bosnia under a Dem president! Yet NONE of this affected the economy? Clinton handed off a slowing economy to Bush!

        All of these events caused issues that fell into the lap of Bush, and while no angel, Bush had plenty of help from the Dems. Dems voted for war, Dems voted for No Child Left Behind (Kennedy helped write it). Yet the Dems are "thorn free"? Really? Since when did Dems do anything about the tax code (other than having tax issues themselves, Geithner and Rangle)? The Dems AND the GOP had plently of opportunity to fix issues, yet only keep passing them on like a baton!

        Sorry James, AL, nobody is buying what your selling!

        STEVEO, DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT THORNS MEAN IN THIS CONTEXT? AS IN A 'THORNY' RELATIONSHIP? CAN YOU NOT AT LEAST CONSIDER, WITHOUT HAVING TO GO BACK TO THE CLINTON YEARS, THAT THIS CONGRESS IS THE MOST BELLIGERENT AND OBNOXIOUS WHEN IT COMES TO TREATING THE PRESIDENT? THAT THE TEA PARTY HAS CAUSED SUCH A FAR RIGHT SHIFT THAT THERE MAY NOT BE A REASONABLE COMPROMISE BETWEEN THE REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS IN THE FORSEEABLE FUTURE?

        @DEcembe 2012,

        You KNOW the context in which James. AL was referring? Nice guess, my friend. IF that is what James meant, James can tell us! Until then, my guess at his context is as good as yours!

        Secondly, as long as BOTH parties keep sending bills they KNOW the other will not support, you're right! No compromise! The problem is you want to blame just one party! The truth is BOTH parties write bills they KNOW the other cannot/will not support!

        I'll give you two examples: What do you think the Dems will do to a GOP bill that slashes entitlements? What do you think the GOP will do to a Dem bill that slashes the military budget? If you answer these honestly, you will understand my point!

        @Steveo The Clinton recession is a myth which is unsupported by facts.

        The housing bubble burst under Bush (Republican) not a democrat. 2007-2012 but signs of the housing meltdown were being felt as early as 2005.

        @jean2009,

        So your telling me Graham Leach, Billey had nothing to do with the housing bubble? The Act was set into motion under Clinton! The same act that allowed banks to become too big to fail had NOTHIING to do with the housing bubble? Exactly who were writing those ridiculous mortgages?

        STEVEO, WHO DO YOU THINK WOULD MORE LIKELY COMPROMISE AMONG BOTH PARTIES? DO YOU THINK THE TEA PARTY WOULD? BE HONEST.

      • Steveo

        @DEcember 2012,

        That is a great question. Now simply take a look at the Congress and how it gets things done! There you will find your answer, Grasshopper! Neither side has done a good job of compromise! As I said both sides submit bills that will not be palatable to the other side. In all honesty, neither side appears capable to be satisfied with little victories! The problem is the atti-tude that if one side wins, the other loses!! We don't see enough win-win! I am being seriously honest!

        p,s DEcember 2012, In Congress the Tea Party is a caucus, not a party! We only have three GOP, DEM, and IND!

        @Steveo The Gramm, Leach, Bliley Act of 1999 was signed on November 12, 1999. Then on January 20, 2001...one year, 1 month and 8 days later George W. Bush became president. He had 8 long years to repeal that Republican sponsored mortgage bill and didn't do it.

    I did not know before seeing this that this broad was cross eyed. Anyway, In reference to the little six year old girl who is currently missing in AZ and the search has gone into old Mexico because the authorities believe she was kidnapped and taken south across the unprotected boarder. I wonder if the parents will receive a phone call from our President giving HIS condolences and HIS apologies for playing the Latino population like a piƱata and refusing to help AZ protect their boarder for HIS political gain. Not just refusing to help, but to actually fight against the state from protecting it's boarder and thus it's people; like this innocent little girl. I hope Obama and the DNC feels this little girls kidnapping and life's outcome was worth it.

    @Steveo, yes we do buy that story!! The list of events that you gave us trying to claim that it was both parties fault that America failed and not GWB alone, doesn't mean a hill of beans to most of us. You want to know why??? We know when Clinton left office, he left us in good shape financially and in good standing in the world!! We had not lost our 'great reputation' and standing in the world, until GWB went in!! Period!! We don't quite have dementia yet, so we remember who, when and what happened!! I see you all are quick to align events of ill causes and of ill-repuke to the Democratic president who was in charge at the time of the event;...Oh yes!! He get's all of the credit then: but when it's something that could be percieved as a good thing, Obama can't have all the credit!! He has to share it or just not talk about it at all!! OBL was caught and killed under his Presidency, but you all diminish that major accomplishment by saying 'He didn't do it!! The seals did it'!! Hasn't everything that has happened militarily, happened under some Presidents watch, whether he was Dem or Rep?? Didn't they get the CREDIT since they were the Commander-in Chief when it happened?? The military has Always been subordinate to the President of the United States!! US Presidents no longer have had to suit up and go take care of the mission personally!! They just call the directive to the military and the military, at his service and ours accomplishes the mission!! You can't have it both ways! When it's something bad, the dem President gets all the credit when its'under his watch; whenever it's good, the dem President, well at least this one can't get ANY!! Somethings very wrong with that picture!! Then you all wonder why I'm always pointing out the perpetual 'double-standardry' of these actions always being waged against this President, Barack H Obama!! It's just not right!! It's mean, evil, and unfair!! No I don't like it!!

      Liz,
      Feel free to buy any story you like but the true remains While I think Clinton was a good president,he did somethings that negatively affected Bush, who did somethings that negatively affected Obama, who is doing things that will negatively affect the next guy! that is politics. Secondly I never complained about any Commander In chief taking crdit for a successful military operation! I have credited the president in the past so, I am not sure where you remarks are coming from!

      News false Liz, IT WASN"T BUSH ALONE! No Dem voted to fight and fund the wars? Or was that Bush alone? Was the economy Bush alone or or did the Dot.com bubble bust under Clinton? Didn't Clinton sign GLB, which made banks too big to fail? GLB was written by te GOP but signed by Clinton! Once again, BOTH PARTIES!
      I am quite sure the truth does mean a hill of beans to "most of us". Too bad because the info I provided just happens to be the truth!

      In short, the truth "doesn't mean a hlll of beans" to a lot of people because they are more interested in playing politics! If you are going to lecture me, a least make it applicable to me and what I said! I never denied the Commander In Chief any credit for the military action that got Bin Laden!
