Honoring a hero at the White House 43 years late

President Obama presented the Medal of Honor posthumously to Army Specialist Leslie H. Sabo, Jr. for "conspicuous gallantry" at a ceremony Wednesday at the White House.  Sabo was killed trying to save his fellow soldiers in Cambodia in 1970 during the Vietnam War.

President Obama spoke of the nation's gratitude to all of its soldiers.

"This gathering of soldiers, past and present, could not be more timely. As a nation, we've ended the war in Iraq. We are moving towards an end to the war in Afghanistan. After a decade of war, our troops are coming home. And this month, we’ll begin to mark the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, a time when, to our shame, our veterans did not always receive the respect and the thanks they deserved - a mistake that must never be repeated."

Specialist Sabo's honor comes 43 years after his heroic act.  (Read Specialist Sabo's story on CNN Security Clearance)

Bruce Springsteen was none too happy about the Reaganville's filled with homeless Vietnam vets....that is why he wrote "Born In the U.S.A.

You can deny democrats/liberals did it all you want. Keep trying to change history. You're failing big time.

Oh yes...the GOP wraps itself up in the flag...but that doesn't deny the absolute fact that they cut veterans benefits and reward the war profiteers for each war they take us into.
Did you look up Springsteen's lyrics...I bet NO!

Least you want to forget history, the first troops sent into Vietnam were sent by Dwight Eisenhower in 1954... the year I was married.

As always with right wing idiots they don't want to admit their wars, their mistakes, or how they deny veterans benefits.....but then facts are facts and you may try but you can't rewrite history.

Great job, very presidential. I was especially impressed with the way you comforted the wife of Army Specialist Sabo.
Also, this seems to be a good opportunity to thank all of our military folks. Thanks to all of you.

It's about time he got honored. Now if they'd just lock up Jane Fonda the world could be put back in balance.

        Cal Conservative.
Calling others names is not by any definition profound, but then you wouldn't know profound if it fell on you.
That would mean you have some insight and depth regarding the subject being discussed...and you by all evidence are clueless about the subject of Vietnam, and under whose administration it started.

Sponge-Bob – I see your point. Most of them are that way these days. They'd rather spit on veterans like they used to in the 60's.

"How did the United States get involved?
President Dwight Eisenhower was the first to meddle in Vietnam, sending a military mission to help the new South Vietnamese government build an army able to prevent a North Vietnamese invasion across the 17th parallel, Korea-style. The first American soldier killed by hostile action in Vietnam was Captain Harry Cramer, part of a group of U.S. Army Special Forces ("Green Berets") who were training the Vietnamese in guerrilla warfare. At the graduation ceremony on October 21, 1957, communist guerrillas dropped mortar shells on the training site near Nha Trang. Cramer was killed, an American sergeant lost an arm, and there were several Vietnamese casualties as well. Because the United States didn't recognize a combat situation in Vietnam, Cramer's death was officially listed as the result of a accidental explosion, and his name wasn't entered on the Vietnam Wall war memorial until 1983."

Dwight Eisenhower sent the first troops and the first American Green Beret killed was in 1957 during Eisenhower's term...But per usual the Repugs didn't want to claim it happened. Wonder what kind of treatment the sergeant who lost an arm received?

Ya know, the people in congress when the dems and repubs go at it. Both parties are failing us. The fact that both parties kicked the can down the road and we are going to see another budget battle is unacceptable. Also, if we can waste billions on "green initiatives", and if we have billions in unspent stimulas – which we do, the dems better not dare ask for an increase in anyones taxes.

      Both parties are failing us

I have been saying that since I started in this site (back in October) and kept getting poked in the eye (thanks Trace)! You are 100% correct though (BOTH parties have let us down).

Hey Steveo – did you watch the MOH presentation? What a hero this guy Sabo was/is. Pretty amazing guy. I would guess there are many, many stories of American heros we never get to hear.
Once again, thanks to you military people. It takes very special people to do what you do. You are better people than I.

        Hey john,

No I didn't see the MOH presentation but, I have seen excerps of others (military history) before and they are something special! These are everyday people but a hero rises up in them when they are needed the most! You're right, they are many, many stories of like heroism that never get told! Thanks John for the thanks! Heroes wear uniforms (military, fire fighter, police) but heroes also wear suits and ties, dockers and blue jeans! Remember 9-11? Heroes were born that day (ordinary people who faced down an extrordinary situation)!

I wonder if obama inserted his own name and deeds into the award...like he did to former presidents bios? Reminds me of LBJ awarding the medal while sending troops into the meat grinder. Obama is the first illegal American President, should not even be in the same room with this heroes family.
